While it might not generate as many headlines as women deacons or L.G.B.T. Catholics, the role of the bishops has emerged as one of the most prominent—and controversial—topics of the Synod on Synodality. Two of the 10 study groups established by Pope Francis are dedicated to bishops, and the pope used his opening address at the final session of the synod in Rome to defend his decision to include lay people as voting members in a Synod of Bishops. Few people are better equipped to dig into questions around the role, qualifications and selection of bishops than Tom Reese, S.J., a senior analyst at Religion News Service and former editor in chief of America magazine. Tom has written several books about the history and structure of the episcopacy and has covered synods since the 1980s. Zac, Ashley and Sebastian talk to Tom about: - How the process of choosing bishops has changed from the apostolic age to today - The qualities we should look for in a bishop—holiness, theological smarts or administrative skill? - How the role of bishops is being discussed and discerned at the synod Zac and Ashley also share the tragic news that after a yearlong battle with cancer, friend and three-time guest Greg Hillis has passed away. Please keep him and his family in your prayers. What is the SSPX?The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood.Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls.Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them. What people need is the Catholic Faith, without compromise, with all the truth and beauty which accompanies it.https://sspx.org

You cannot talk about Roman Catholicism today without also talking about synodality. The Synodal Church is the new hermeneutic for understanding and engaging Roman Catholicism. To say it is essential is an understatement. But what is it? In this episode, we answer that question.
A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The US bishops voted Tuesday to advance the cause of beatification and canonization of Servant of God Isaac Thomas Hecker, a 19th-century American priest who founded the Missionary Society of Saint Paul the Apostle, today known as the Paulist Fathers. Hecker's cause for canonization was formally opened in 2008, at which time he received the title “Servant of God.” The next step in the process is to publicize the cause for canonization in the Archdiocese of New York, where the Paulists are headquartered. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256020/us-bishops-vote-to-advance-the-cause-of-canonization-for-american-priest-isaac-hecker The Vatican Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith released a document on Wednesday reaffirming that Catholics are forbidden from becoming Freemasons. The new document signed by Pope Francis and DDF Prefect Cardinal Victor Fernández was written in response to a bishop from the Philippines who had expressed concern at the growing number of Catholics in his diocese who are taking part in Freemasonry and asked for suggestions for how to respond pastorally. The Freemasons are the largest worldwide oath-bound secret society. Freemasonry promotes ideas and rituals incompatible with the Catholic faith, including indifferentism, or the position that a person can be equally pleasing to God while remaining in any religion, and a deistic concept of a “Great Architect of the Universe.” The Catholic Church's prohibition on Freemasonry dates back to Pope Clement XII, who formally condemned it in a papal bull in 1738. Catholics who enroll in Masonic associations “are in a state of grave sin and may not receive holy Communion.” https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256014/vatican-doctrine-office-reaffirms-that-catholics-cannot-be-freemasons US bishops are hoping for further guidance from the Vatican before they formulate concrete plans to prepare for the final stage of the Synod on Synodality next fall. At the conclusion of the synod's first assembly that took place at the Vatican between October 4–29, delegates approved a 42-page synthesis document titled “A Synodal Church in Mission” containing more than 80 proposals, including recommendations aimed at giving lay Catholics a greater role in decision-making. The preliminary document did not, however, specify the next steps that dioceses and episcopal conferences should take during the interim period before the synod reconvenes in October 2024. Flores agreed that the USCCB might have to produce its own summary if the Vatican doesn't provide one soon. Asked if there was a timeline for when additional steps need to be taken, he said it was premature to formulate a schedule. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256019/synod-s-next-steps-us-bishops-look-to-rome-for-guidance-say-priests-and-poor-need-a-voice Today, the Church celebrates Saint Joseph Moscati, the first modern medical doctor to be canonized. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-joseph-moscati-55 The Church also celebrates Saint Margaret, Queen of Scotland. Margaret worked tirelessly to bring justice and relief to the poor of Scotland. She also built churches and encouraged practices of religious devotion. In her private life, she exhibited great prayerfulness and piety. Her influence was seen not only in her husband's life, but throughout all of Scotland. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-margaret-of-scotland-657 Finally, the Church celebrates Saint Gertrude the Great, a distinguished medieval nun and writer in the Benedictine monastic tradition. Anyone who has been following Catholic news within the U.S. or globally has probably gotten used to hearing updates about synods. Thanks to the leadership of Pope Francis, terms like “synod” and “synodality” have entered the ordinary vernacular of Catholics. At the time of this recording, the three-year-long Synod on Synodality, running from 2021 to 2024, is still ongoing, but many Catholics may still be uncertain about the purpose of this event, or what a synod even is. Today's guest on the first episode of season three of the Glad You Asked podcast, can help clarify what the Synod on Synodality is all about, and how to understand Pope Francis' vision for a synodal church within the context of existing tradition, going back to the earliest days of Christianity. We look at what happened in the national phase talking through the process and the national synthesis document that was prepared with Julieann Moran who is the General Secretary for the Synodal Pathway of the Catholic Church in Ireland.Limerick diocese webpage on Synod 2023Limerick diocese synthesis Irish Synodal Pathway websiteIrish national synthesisC&SI - Synod on Synodality SeriesSynod Series Part 1 - Synod on Synodality - What is all about and what is happening?Synod Series Part 2 - Synod on Synodality - The Diocesan PhaseSynod Series Part 3 - Synod on Synodality - Writing and sharing the Irish National SynthesisSynod Series Part 4 - Synod on Synodality - Discerning the European response for the Synod on Synodality

Preaching for the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Ellie Hidalgo offers a reflection on humility, especially as we seek to become a synodal Church: "It requires humility to become a People of God capable of encountering one another, listening, dialoguing, and able to do the hard work of communal discernment. All this synodal listening can be fruitful if we are curious and believe that every person we meet has God-given dignity and has something of value to share and that we too have something of value to share." Ellie Hidalgo is co-director of Discerning Deacons, a project that engages Catholics in the active discernment of our Church about women and the diaconate. She graduated with a Masters in Pastoral Theology from Loyola Marymount University and received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania. Ellie was commissioned as a pastoral associate for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2013; she preached for Catholic Women Preach in 2020 and in 2018 and helped to facilitate national prayer services in 2020 and 2021 to commemorate St. Phoebe, one of the early Church's female deacons. Previously, Ellie served as a staff writer for The Tidings Catholic Newspaper writing news and feature stories about Hispanic ministry, restorative justice, youth ministry, and immigration reform. Ellie is the first of five children born to Cuban parents and a proud aunt to eight nieces and nephews and numerous godchildren. She returned to Miami, Florida, USA in 2020 to live closer to family. Find out more about his work as a composer here: http://pauljernberg.com As many of you know, if you've followed this channel long enough, I'm a big admirer of CS Lewis and even employ some of his argumentation in my videos. This in spite of the fact that even though his Catholic friend J.R.R. Tolkien was instrumental in his conversion to theism and then Christianity, he never converted all the way to the Catholic Church. He instead, embraced a kind of high Church Anglicanism. Lewis was famous for trying to build bridges along the fault lines of Christian denominations by promoting what he called Mere Christianity, or what was essential and mostly agreed upon by the main denominations – you could call this credal Christianity because it promotes the fundamentals of the ancient creeds which we almost all agree on. This is probably why Lewis wasn't in the habit of criticizing any Christian church or tradition, but he is supposed to have compared the Catholic Church to an overwhelming jungle where people can get lost and distracted before they ever get to the fundamentals of mere Christianity. And, I, in the course of my own conversion to Catholicism have found it hard not to sympathize with that criticism. Catholic thought and beliefs are so substantial that it can be easy to miss the forest for the trees. For example, I've met Catholics who could tell you all about the apparitions of Medjugorje but don't know what the phrase “consubstantial with the Father” in the Nicene Creed means. I've met Catholics who know all about the life of St. Juan Diego, but can't name the 12 apostles. So maybe Lewis has a point. But instead of describing it as a jungle, I might amend the comparison to be a library – a massive library. Because, if we're talking about the Church's intellectual tradition, her teachings, and even her dogmas, you actually do have something like a library of content. But the challenge with a library, is that it's easy to get distracted with the stuff you want to read as opposed to the stuff you should read.

(0:25) Mike, Mary, and Archbishop Vigneron catch up on the last month. The Archbishop talks about the opportunities for prayer, fraternity, and mutual support at the recent priest and deacon convocations, as well as his trip to the Vatican with USCCB President Archbishop Gomez of Los Angeles and their audience with our Holy Father. (6:50) As the global Church prepares for the Synod on Synodality and the Archdiocese of Detroit approaches the fifth anniversary of Synod 16, Mike asks Archbishop Vigneron to reflect on local church's synodal identity. The Archbishop talks about how listening to the Holy Spirit must be central to any synod and that participants must come together, listen to one another, and walk alongside each other on the path of discernment. (10:55) Archbishop Vigneron, Mary, and Mike look back at Synod 16 and the importance of prayer in the years leading up to it – especially during the Year of Prayer for a New Pentecost and the Come, Encounter Christ prayer and worship events held throughout the Archdiocese. Archbishop discusses some of the fruits of Synod 16, particularly that we, as a local Church, are more docile to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and our prayers are more ardent and less perfunctory. (15:30) Archbishop Vigneron reflects on earlier Archdiocesan synods, especially Synod 69, and how they relate to Synod 16. (19:15) Mary asks Archbishop Vigneron about the Mass for Pardon celebrated shortly before Synod 16. Archbishop says that it was vital to celebrate that Mass so that the Holy Spirit could most effectively work through us at Synod 16. (24:10) What does Pope Francis mean when he calls for us to be a more synodal church? Archbishop discusses how it's about listening together, repenting together, and working together on a shared mission. In the case of the Archdiocese of Detroit, that mission is to transform southeast Michigan into a community of joyful missionary disciples. (33:25) Archbishop talks about where he thought we would be five years on from Synod 16. Families of Parishes, although an unanticipated development, are also a fruit of that synod. (36:30) Where will the Archdiocese of Detroit be in five years? Archbishop says that we will be settled into our Family of Parishes relationships and that this way of being will have become natural for us. Our parishes will be focused on the work of outreach: to those on the margins, young adults, the “nones,” baptized but non-practicing Catholics, and all those who live within the territorial boundaries of our parishes – Christian and non-Christian. (38:30) Archbishop offers advice about what to take away from this synodal process. He encourages us to listen every day for the missionary opportunities God gives us and to look for partners to carry out that mission. Husbands and wives are natural mission partners, and it is important that they let the Holy Spirit work through them and their marriage to bring about what God wants. (41:26) Archbishop Vigneron answers listener questions about the symbols of a bishop's office, intercessions for diaconate vocations, and a synodal Archdiocese of Detroit both pre- and post-pandemic. (52:20) Archbishop Vigneron asks listeners to pray for the upcoming meeting of the U.S. bishops and closes with a prayer and blessing.
