Bridget sits down with Erika Sanzi, the Director of Outreach at Parents Defending Education (PDE), an organization dedicated to addressing ideological biases in schools. She and Bridget discuss PDE's mission to bring political neutrality back into classrooms, the indoctrination of Critical Race Theory (CRT) and gender identity policies in schools, the suppression and compelled speech of students, and how we got to this point. They cover the reemergence of treating people differently based on their immutable characteristics like skin color, the oppressor/oppressed frame that's being taught to children, the emphasis on ideology over basic skills like reading and math, the realities of “gender affirming care", how gender ideology is chipping away at kids' childhoods and why it has no place in schools, the Biden administration's gutting of Title IX, and how easy it is to brainwash children. In this conversation, Karol interviews Erika Sanzi about the topic of schools banning books. Erika argues that the conversation around book banning is misleading, as books are not actually being banned but rather certain books are being excluded from school library collections. She highlights the infiltration of highly ideological books, particularly those related to LGBTQ topics, in school libraries. Erika also discusses the challenges of discussing this issue with different audiences and the need to protect childhood by not burdening children with adult topics. She shares her passion project, Love My View Sports Apparel, which promotes gratitude in the context of youth sports. Director of Outreach for Parents Defending Education, Erika Sanzi, discusses woke indoctrination in education.
It's that time of year again–reliably bumming out students and parents alike… it 's back to school! But back to school is also a time to reflect on the state of education in this country… and it's not all that great. America is one of the richest countries in the world. But you wouldn't know it if you looked at our education statistics. We're 16th in science globally. In Math, we scored below the average and well below the scores of the top five countries, all of which were in Asia. And in 2018, we ranked an astonishing 125th in literacy among all countries according to the World Atlas. As we tumble down the international tables, public schools around the country are getting rid of gifted and talented programs. They're getting rid of standardized testing. All while trying to regain ground from COVID-related learning loss… So how did we get here? Why have public schools deprioritized literacy and numeracy? What role have teachers' unions played in advocating for public education in this country and also in holding kids back by protecting bad teachers? How is socioeconomic segregation hurting academic performance? And what kinds of books should really be taught in public schools? Today, we're diving deep into these questions and more with three experts who bring diverse perspectives to this debate: Richard Kahlenberg is Director of the American Identity Project and Director of Housing at the Progressive Policy Institute. His many books and essays have focused on addressing economic disparities in education. Maud Maron is co-founder of PLACE NYC, which advocates for improving the academic rigor and standards of K-12 public school curricula. She's also the mother of four kids in New York City public schools. Erika Sanzi is a former educator and school dean in Rhode Island. She is Director of Outreach at Parents Defending Education, which aims to fight ideological indoctrination in the classroom. We discuss the misallocation of resources in education, the promise and perils of school choice, and how we can fix our broken education system. And if you like this conversation, good news! All week this week at The Free Press—as summer ends and kids return to class—we're pausing our usual news coverage to talk about education. We've invited six writers to answer the question: What didn't school teach you? With elite colleges peddling courses on “Queering Video Games,” “Decolonial Black Feminist Magic,” and “What Is a Settler Text?,” there's never been a better time to go back to the proverbial school of life. Parents Defending Education Director of Outreach Erika Sanzi joined WMAL's "O'Connor and Company" radio program on Friday to discuss how a Maryland teacher called out a woke assignments about white privilege, social justice and cultural appropriation. On February 10th, 2022, Wild Lake High School Health teacher Jonathan Shaw spoke to the school board about two assignments shown to him by students who felt they had nowhere else to turn, for fear of retribution. One assignment from an English class depicts a flow chart for cultural appropriation which asks students to assess if they have white privilege to understand if they are engaged in cultural appropriation. If you look at the bottom of the image, the source for this lesson is the url freshfeminism.tumblr.com. Another assignment from a Spanish class on social/racial justice movements depicts Black Panther symbology and a cartoon of border patrol agents and police officers being thrown into the trash. It is unclear if the Spanish teacher who taught the lesson supports the messages of these images. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, parents have been forced to manage their children's educations in a more hands-on manner thanks to school closures demanded by teachers unions. One of the consequences has been an increasing awareness of the influence of “critical race theory” in even elementary-level schooling. Joining me to discuss the campaign against critical race theory in education is Erika Sanzi, director of outreach for Parents Defending Education.

At its annual conference, the nation's largest teachers union, the National Education Association voted to: * Promote Critical Race Theory (CRT) among its membership * Target opponents of CRT in schools "While we keep hearing from superintendents, teachers and media talking heads that no one is teaching CRT in schools, the largest teachers' union in the country just doubled down on ensuring it continues to be taught in schools. On this week's Bespoke Parenting Hour, host Julie Gunlock talks to writer and education advocate Erika Sanzi, whe serves as the chief editor at Project Forever Free--an online platform for education activists. Julie and Erika (both moms of three school-aged boys) talk about what Erika calls "the boy crisis in American schools" and the very grim statistics that show boys are falling behind both in school and life. In addition, they discuss why it's become acceptable (even fashionable) in American culture to disparage boys and men and why terms like "the future is female '' and "girls rule" creates an unhelpful (and weird!) "us against them" way of thinking that harms both sexes and creates unnecessary hostility. Julie and Erika also discuss what Erika says is the "narrative that boys are inherently bad or broken" and the media-driven generalizations about boys and men, which suggest they are "unworthy, expendable and deserving of scorn ... just for being male." In this episode, Erika Sanzi joins us to discuss the Rhode Island house bill (HB 5817) that would make sex between school employees and students a crime. We talk about what the Rhode Island bill means for schools in general and the education sector. You'll learn why the bill hasn't passed yet– even though other states have similar laws, how the lack of legislation on this issue makes schools less safe for students, and why most people don't realize that student sexual abuse is an issue.
