Let's dive into a beer-filled adventure with guests Ben Mullet and Michael Spinello, co-founders of DC's newest brewery, Henceforth. The episode kicks off with the usual friendly banter about what everyone is sipping, featuring an impressive lineup of pints from rich ESBs to crisp pilsners.Michael and Ben reveal the inspirations behind Henceforth, sharing their journey from ideation to near opening at their unique space on H Street. They discuss the innovative concept of creating a cozy brewpub atmosphere that feels more like a living room than a warehouse, aiming to bring refreshing change to the local beer scene. The episode brims with frothy excitement about traditional beer styles, nonalcoholic offerings, and a plan to engage a broader audience, including those who prefer cocktails or wine. Our hosts also keep you in the loop with upcoming events like the Maryland Craft Beer Festival and notes on Henceforth's opening timetable. The beer talk is spiced up with a discussion on the challenges of transforming a historical venue into a state-of-the-art brewhouse, and a lighthearted take on frosty descriptions of "microbrews."One important note: Beginning April 22, 2025, new episodes of The DC Beer Show will air at 2:00 p.m. ET every other Tuesday. As always, check out @DCBeer on social media for live updates, exciting developments, and some patio-beer escapades. Explore bitter beers with Midwest Coast, including ESBs, English Pale Ales, and IPAs that cater to evolving palates. 01:48 Beer Myth: What's a “girly drink” when it comes to beers? Katherine and Brian and their guests shatter the myth that some beers are “manly” and others are not.  07:32 Midwest Coast Brewing: Cameron Compton, founder of Midwest Coast, and Timothy Ficken, brewery manager, talk about what brought them together to Midwest Coast. They share the different beer trends that were emerging in their very different parts of the country, with hops being a central part of one brewer's background and almost completely absent from the other's. Cameron also discusses his time in the military and in the tech world and what compelled him to move with his wife to Chicago, where he had never lived before, and open a brewery with his sister. Cameron also explains how hop contracts work and why they're so brutal for brewers to work with. What is an English IPA and what is an ESB? Timothy explains the concept behind the “Extra Special Bitter” and how they developed an English Pale Ale in order to make a certain style more palatable – and marketable – for customers. Katherine brings up a conversation about whether the Western palate really is designed to handle hops (is it?) and Brian explores the idea of a person's palate changing as they grow older. What is hoppy and what is earthy? An EXTENSIVE debate ensues, including a confused Cody who doesn't know how to explain what he's drinking. 54:20 Beer Behavior: When is it okay for brewers to chase trends and when is it not? Katherine gives props to Cameron and Timothy for sticking to the styles they like to brew, which evolves into a discussion of the benefits of trend-chasing – as long as someone else is doing it. 1:01:48 Today's Featured Merchandise: Our amazing baseball hats, available in multiple styles and colors! I hope you agree that getting a high-quality education is key for any sports business professional. This is why I was so excited to welcome this week's two guests to the show: Vicente Valero, Campus Director at the European Sports Business School, and Borja Eroles, Operations Coordinator at Valencia CF. And the reason I was looking forward to this conversation is precisely the combination of having someone from the ESBS academic team and one of their alumni, who is actually developing his career in the football industry. And that's really what the conversation is about: What are the pillars of a good educational program? How is that then applied to the reality of a football club? After looking at the news this week and seeing two hurricanes rip through various countries causing trillions in damages, it's hard not to think about climate change and how everything is getting worse. I find it difficult to know how we are doing. We hear about international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the Convention of Biological Diversity and we expect things to get better, but every time a report is written we hear about how things keep getting worse. Wouldn't it be nice to have a way of tracking how countries, states/provinces, cities, and even companies are holding up their end of the bargain? Well, we might just have a way to do that and it's called Earth System Boundaries.   In this episode, I am going to talk about these ESBs and the 7 gaps that exist to achieve these metrics.   Link to article: https://go.nature.com/3UPXg8U   Join the audio program - Build Your Marine Science and Conservation Career: https://glow.fm/marinesciencecareers/   Facebook Group: https://bit.ly/3NmYvsI Connect with Speak Up For Blue: Website: https://bit.ly/3fOF3Wf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3rIaJSG Twitter: https://bit.ly/3rHZxpc

Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was a huge success It was an unusually warm day for the 16th Annual Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting and this brought with it some crazy weather.  As attendees filled Bold Monk Brewing to sample the cask ales the rain started coming down strong and with about an hour left the hammer dropped.  The parking lot flooded and the very well-covered patio was drenched, and finally, the power went out.  Fortunately, we had completed our show taping but it did cause some chaos for the Bold Monk and cut a few festival-goers off from their cask ales a bit early.  Even with the craziness, I think everyone had a great time. This is our 4th year partnering with Brewtopia Events for ACAT and we kept our tradition going by speaking with festival organizer Owen Ogletree about the event and the ever-changing world of cask ales.  We also spoke to a few of the breweries currently under construction in Georgia that we hope to see debut in 2020. The team from Social Fox Brewing is ready to bring some brews to Norcross. A few of Georgia's Next Breweries Outrun Brewing | Founders Josh Miller and Ryan Silva (formerly of Decatur, GA's Three Taverns) join us to discuss the plans for their retro 80s-themed brewery coming to Stone Mountain.  We did confirm there will be an Outrun arcade machine at the brewery. Sabbath Brewing | Founder Jeff Oparnica joins us to talk about his struggles fighting through zoning laws with the City of Atlanta, his plan to ferment 100% in oak vessels, and brewing raw ales. Social Fox Brewing & Storey Time Construction | We didn't have enough mics to get the whole team on with us but they all came out to support the cause.  Mike Greene joined us to represent Team Social Fox to talk about their brewery coming to Norcross.  Anthony Storey joins us from Storey Time Construction as well to discuss building out their brewery and some others that are in the works. (Storey Time is one of BGR's super awesome sponsors.) The episode discusses some technical aspects of SOA (such as loose coupling, messaging and ESBs), but mainly focusses on non-technical aspects of implementing an SOA.

Software Engineering Radio - The Podcast for Professional Software Developers

This Episode is part five in our (probably ongoing) series on service oriented architecture. In this episode we talk to Nico Josuttis, who has recently published a book on this topic. As its title "SOA in Practice" suggests, it is a very pragmatic book based on Nico's experience as architect and project lead in a number of enterprise-level projects - not all of them had been called SOA, since they at the time the term was not yet coined. The episode discusses some technical aspects of SOA (such as loose coupling, messaging and ESBs), but mainly focusses on non-technical aspects of implementing an SOA.
