dBridge has played an important role in the UK Drum & Bass scene since the genre's conception in the early 1990s. Since founding Exit Records in 2003, he has demonstrated a clear desire to move away from typical club style Drum & Bass sounds to more ambient and experimental soundscapes. Enjoy!
I have been laid up with a serious back problem for nearly two weeks now and haven't been able to record a new episode in that time. But fear not, because we are taking this opportunity to revisit one of absolute my favourite episodes of the show, all the way back to February 2022. Fingers crossed we will be back with a new episode next week!--From episode 006 (Feb 2022): dBridge is an unequivocal legend of Drum n Bass. From his work as part of Future Forces Inc. on Renegade Hardware in the mid 90s, through the supergroup Bad Company and the Autonomic project with Instra:mental, right up to releasing 4 albums since 2018 on his own Exit Records label, he has been right at the cutting edge of the genre, and of electronic music generally for more than 25 years. We talk about the early Jungle scene, subgenre fragmentation, DnB politics, the tyranny of rewinds, and making peace with your own musical output. This week we are going a little old school with a randomly selected album from the year 1998. We are talking about Indecision's sophomore album Most Precious Blood. This was the final record to feature vocalist Tom Sheehan, and is considered a near masterpiece by hardcore fans. We also hear from Grant who runs Bitter Melody Records and he tells us what this album means to him. The 77s' 1987 self-titled album was not only that band's first real shot at the "big-time" success their fans knew they deserved. It was also the climax of a creative explosion from a unique Sacramento community that had been cooking up spiritually driven, culturally engaged, artistically excellent music for about a decade. On this special "From The Vault" episode of the podcast, we unveil previously unheard tape culled from frontman Michael Roe's conversation with True Tunes and with The Electric Jesus Podcast to finally answer one of the most fascinating questions of all time: Did U2's breakthrough album The Joshua Tree inadvertently KILL one of our other favorite LPs? If you dig this, don't miss our previous 2-part deep dive with Michael Roe, our recent @45RPM reflection on U2's Achtung Baby, our conversation with 77s and Exit Records advocate Randy Layton, or our discussions in the vault with fellow Exit artists Steve Scott, Jimmy Abegg, and Charlie Peacock. Randy Layton may not be a household name, but that's not the point with people like him. Layton has been advocating for some of the most important - if not famous and successful - artists of the last forty years through his label Alternative Records and his previous work with the enormously influential Sacramento label Exit Records. He was all about the "Alternative" back when that word meant something. Layton has helped release projects by The 77s, Vector, Steve Scott, 2 Pound Planet, Robert Vaughn and the Shadows, and many others. Although we have heard pieces of this conversation here and there on previous episodes of the show, we finally unspool the whole enchilada and get the full story of Layton's formative years in the 70s, his early years as an importer of rare music from the UK and Europe, his work with some of our favorite artists, and some recent reissues as well. Along the way, we catch a glimpse of the power behind his story, and our own. Spoiler alert - it's about a lot more than music. We have also featured many of the beneficiaries of Layton's largesse on previous episodes, including Michael Roe, Charlie Peacock, Steve Scott, and Jimmy Abegg For full SHOW NOTES and music list visit TrueTunes.com/LaytonAlternative If you want to support the show, please join our Patreon community or drop us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH!

On this special @45RPM episode we continue our exploration of the life, music, and legacy of Michael Roe by checking in with some of his closest friends and compatriots. We hear from his 77s bandmates: Aaron "A-Train" Smith and Jan Eric Volz, Exit Records soulmate Jimmy Abegg, longtime advocate Randy Layton of Alternative Records, and fellow Lost Dog Terry Scott Taylor. On Part 2 we will continue to dig deep with the man himself, diving into one of JJT's all-time favorite 77s songs and hearing all about the formation, evolution, and tragic beauty of The Lost Dogs. We'll hear about what it might mean to “do it for love,” after all these broken, beautiful years. If you have not heard PART ONE of our conversation with Mike "Dr. Love" Roe - check it out now. Earlier this year we brought you the news of an innovative new collaboration which pairs two producers with unique perspectives on sound design and music. Prequel Tapes is best known for his noisy, disjointed approach to techno and the rougher drone inspired fringes of electronica and IDM. He has released music on the likes of Mannequin and R'COUP'D. Meanwhile, dBridge remains one of the most innovative figures in UK bass music culture having released cutting edge downtempo, jungle and drum 'n' bass over many decades for the likes of Creative Source, Exit Records and Metalheadz. Now the two have collaborated on a new EP for Midnight Shift, a record label which continues to connect generations of well versed music heads through its consistent release of high quality techno, bass and the weirder, heavier fringes of dance music. This new EP pairs two unique, creative minds. The result is a mutant hybrid showcasing the importance of collaboration and innovation. Following the release we asked kindly whether the pair might be up for recording a mix together, an alternative insight into their own collections and musical tapestry. The result is an old school mixtape, reel to reel vibes with integrity at its core.
We meet Darren White, aka. dBridge, the founder of Exit Records. Setting it up the label in 2003, he dedicated himself to exploring new avenues rather than retreading old roads. From heavyweight dubstep to footwork fusion, the shape-shifting label has been breaking ground ever since. dBridge tells Chal about throwing himself into drum and bass after a turbulent childhood, becoming a pioneer of digital technology (and then going back to his analogue machines anyway), and his unending quest to push things forward. Episode: "YWTDJ 017: Priming Ourselves for Creativity and Inspiration with Sinistarr"Welcome to Episode 017 of the You're With the DJ. In this episode, Sinistarr discusses finding inspiration and creatively priming your brain.Episode Title: "Capturing Human Emotion In Nightlife"About SinistarrJeremy Howard, aka Sinistarr, is truly one of the most interesting and exciting names to hit the underground dance music world this past decade. He has become known as an innovative and consistent producer and a skilled and adventurous DJ, and his sound isan authentic extension of his soul and the pure talent that Jeremy possesses, deftly exploring the soul of yesteryear with a modern context. This sound represents his life living in and around his hometown of Detroit, MI and his collective travels around the world. His creativity defies genres, and sees him infuse his unique sound into a broad range of tempos and vibes. He is equally at home writing emotive headphone music, or in-your-face dance-floor cuts.Jeremy began his movement deeply rooted in the world of Drum & Bass, having releases on legendary labels like Metalheadz Platinum, Renegade Hardware and Creative Source. He continued over the years to evolve his sound as his own prowess as a producer grew, eventually branching out into many different tempos, still maintaining his unique sound exploring the realms of Footwork, Jungle and Techno. Recently he has seen releases on labels like Tectonic, Hospital, Loose Squares and most notably, the 70th release on dBridge’s iconic imprint Exit Records. He has shared the stage with and been supported musically by some of the biggest names in the game like Machinedrum, Fabio, Ivy Lab, Om Unit, Sam Binga, Rockwell & Dabrye to name but a handful. His sounds have been heard all over Rinse FM, NTS, FM Xtra and BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra and he turned in a DNB60 mix for Friction’s quintessential Drum & Bass show.Sinistarr has been increasingly touring and hitting major clubs and festivals like SXSW (Texas), Secret Solstice (Iceland), Tresor (Berlin), Oil Club (China), Bass Coast (Canada), and many more around the world. There is seemingly no obstacle too high for him, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to watch his amazing journey. Thanks for Tuning In!Thanks so much for being with us this week. From Berlin, Germany we're pleased to welcome the lovely Sarah Farina to The Armory. Press play. Get down. Over the last couple of years, Sarah Farina has become one of Berlin's main taste-makers in underground bass. Sarah is well recognized throughout Germany and noticed by artists and music heads on each and every continent. Her sets are driven forward through futuristic break-beats and intense bass lines. Not sticking to any specific genre, she defines the music she plays as ‘Rainbowbass'. Sarah Farina is one of the original founders of Through My Speakers, which became a record label in 2014, after being a collective and event production crew since 2010. Over the last years she supported some of the most respected of her bass music contemporaries, both locally and abroad. She contributed to Rinse.fm's Hyperdub show with Kode9 and Scratcha DVA in London 2013 and shared the DJ booth with artists like Loefah, Disclosure, Gaslampkiller, Lunice and many many more. Being connected with crews like Teklife (RIP DJ Rashad), Buraka Som Sistema, Exit Records and similar, her network is large and constantly growing. Her two contributions to Boiler Room Berlin in 2013 and 2014 were well received by BR's usually discriminating audience and paved her way even more for promising gigs in the future. The jungle, as we envision it, is made of dense vegetation, where the sun never beats due to a dense tangle of trees and lianas. The sounds of wildlife interrupt the silence of a seemingly uninhabited place. But there is another jungle, not characterized by dense vegetation, but by cement, skyscrapers, large and small streets crossed by millions of people moving like ants. It 's the urban jungle. The one made of large cities. The one that never sleeps, frenetic and chaotic. The one that goes to 160 BPM. Well, this is the "jungle" of Lynch Kingsley. The 9th episode of The Tape podcasts, contaminated by the footwork and updated to the new sounds, leads us in the metropolitan chaos where you never stop. So press play and start moving! TRACKLIST 1. His musical style is heavily influenced by Chicago footwork, hip-hop and the UK bass scene. He likes to sink everything he does into deep atmospheric reverberations and complex ambient textures. He released a self-produced debut album "In The Past Her Memories Were Here" on September 2012 and a bunch of split albums under the Sirona Records label. After that, he decided to take a change into his style, moving from his earlier future garage, dark dubby hip-hop style to something faster, more abstract, complex, experimental but dance. Music for the body and the ears.
