Hey stranger danger, remember us? We've been on Blackout for the last few years primarily because the podcast and all you epic humans tuning in from across the Globe have been successful! I dig that it seems weird to go dark when things are working, but gander a google for “Paul Geer” and you'll see that the Federal Govt has finally charged the “Music Man” from my personal vortex of hell “the Family Foundation School” for just 3 of his many victims who came forward from his 30 year reign of terror, and yes we all hope that more of his victims will have access to Justice in the future . For those that arent caught up on this predator, checkout our interview with Liz and Liz titled “Meet The Music Man” from 2020. We pushed for YEARS for the NY Child Victims Act which opened the statute of limitations for child victims of SA in civil court. Those cases have finally arrived in Federal Criminal Court in the “USA vs Paul Geer”. Currently, the jury is deliberating so we are keeping our mouths SHUT as we have for the last few years to protect this process. Troubled remains a free, non monetized podcast by Survivors, for Survivors and the general public. Our goal is still to raise awareness with the goal being Justice and accountability for the past as well as legislation and reform in the present and for the future. To this day, a quarter million NEW child victims are abducted, trafficked, detained and tortured in coercive behavior modification facilities nationwide. For the thousands of Survivors from the Family School specifically, we see you survivor. As soon as the verdict is in we will posts updates about the trial and if you would like your voice included please send audio Recordings to our email TheTroubledPodcast@gmailWe'll use as many clips as possible, but they may be edited for brevity or content. FFS Survivors who would like to submit a character witness statement for Paul Geers sentencing (which is months up to a year out) we are happy to forward you that email or you can contact the James T Foley Courthouse in Albany (which is also how you would purchase the trial transcript which is 5 cents a page, altho please note that we do plan to host our copy publicly once received). For ANY Survivor who hopes to be involved in ANY civil or criminal cases in the future, PLEASE PLEASE hear this “anything you say publicly on any podcast, in any article or even on any of your social media platforms CAN absolutely be used as evidence in any court.” We have a lot to say about how Survivors testimonials were used in Federal Court this time but we and EVERY FFS Survivor (or anyone related to any active case) should seriously stay shhhed until the verdict is announced to avoid jeopardizing our collective access to Justice. We'll be seeing you again very very soon, but until then #iseeyousurvivor

In this episode, we (Mark Raffler and Sarah Shoemaker) connect with Dr. Karen Mapp, a Senior Lecturer on Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) and former Faculty Director of the HGSE Education Policy and Management Master's Program. Dr. Mapp has authored several books on Family Engagement Partnerships - Her latest book: Everyone Wins!: The Evidence for Family-School Partnerships & Implications for Practice is the focus of our podcast today. Here is a quick brief of our conversation: Sarah starts the dialogue with Dr. Mapp by prompting her to tell us about use of the term family-school partnerships in her work. She shares the co-designed working definition of family engagement developed by State Department of Education, families, and educators in Connecticut - “Family Engagement is a full, equal, and equitable partnership among the adult caregivers, community members, and practioners.” Dr. Karen Mapp talks about the relational trust that is required for full partnership. Mark adds to the dialogue by asking: “What are some key ideas to keep in mind in relation family engagement?” Dr. Mapp leans into Larry Ferlazzo's words - “Family Engagment leads with our ears.” She describes how the partnership builds trust by listening and talking with families - instead of talking at families. Dr. Karen Mapp emphasizes that we need to do a better job of preparing preservice teachers for family engagement and then offer this professional learning for our current practitioners as well. Sarah responds: What are some key components to move towards practicing two-way communication? Dr. Mapp talks about moving past system structures that are set up with deficit mindsets towards embracing the fact that families do care about their children. Once families are seen as the geniuses that they are for the funds of knowledge they hold, we can create these deep community partnerships. Taking on the attitude that families are valued and equal partners makes us as educators better practitioners. Mark prompts: “You've reference so many studies in your work. Share with us a study or two that stands out.” Dr. Karen Mapp shares 40 studies in her book Everyone Wins. She highlights the Botswana study and the impact on families through this simple text message practice to communicate with home environments. The second study featured by Dr. Mapp today is the parent-teacher home visit model study. Following our normal podcast protocol, we ask for resources for educators to learn more about family engagement and encourage Dr. Karen Mapp to highlight some departing words for our listenersWe wrap up this episode by asking listeners to share your thoughts on podcast topics - your voice matters! This week we speak with Dr. Carly Robinson on ways to help families support children around particularly meaningful moments in education. Dr. Robinson outlines some of her research that has identified common barriers to parental engagement, as well as sources of support. Also as part of our conversation, we discuss the need for transparency in research. A growing but not yet large trend is for studies to pre-register research questions prior to data collection and/or analysis. As we discuss, such practices hold promise in ensuring the dissemination of valid and complete research findings. Dr. Robinson is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University's Annenberg Institute where she works with the National Student Support Accelerator. She is also affiliated with the Social Psychology in Education & the Environment (SPiEE) Lab at Johns Hopkins University and the Student Social Support (S3) R&D Lab at the Harvard Kennedy School. She completed her Ph.D. in Education at Harvard University. While at Harvard, she was awarded the National Academy of Education/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship and was an IES Fellow in the Partnering in Education Research (PIER) program. Prior to conducting educational research, Dr. Robinson worked as a New York City teacher. She received a B.A. in Psychology from Williams College and a Master's in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. . While we've been talking about our brothers quite regularly recently, we haven't spoken WITH one of them in far too long. So enjoy this 2hr special with Wes Good, as we make up for a loss in the masculine perspective. Whether you know Wes from the Family School, his real world life, or his band Deadwulf; you're about to know him a lot better. Consider this a conversational rant-esque catch-up. We follow a spectrum of shiny subjects into and out of the darkness including but not limited to: first/teen love, decking your dad while being "legally kidnapped", the impact of and impressions made by our captors, "what is Stockholm syndrome?", the glaring gender gap in representation of our Survivor brothers, talking with our parents about TTI etc. If you aren't already familiar with Deadwulf, definitely checkout their YouTube (in particular "Hancock" a song about the Family Foundation School). Don't forget to check out Wes Good on YouTube as well. You can connect with Wes on Facebook, and Deadwulf too. This magical link brings you to EVERYWHERE you can listen to Deadwulf on. Menstruation was a topic that had been confusing to Connie and Jenny during the teenage years. Why were the females in school and in movies saying to eat ice cream on cramps while our mother was preparing hot water bottles for us? Why were some of our friends hesitant to take Advil for their cramps? An average member of the female sex spends 5-7 days every month menstruating. Apart from the common side effects such as dizziness, cramps, exhaustion, acne, etc., females can encounter struggles of irregular cycles and larger health problems all revolving around the ruthless uterus. Menstruation is handled so differently by each culture around the world. This episode is where we finally discuss the most defining experience that makes the life of a female. --- Thanks for listening! Too many activities and pressures leads to feelings of stress and anxiety, that's why we've made Time and Space our second tenet of Family School. This episode is all about how to slow down and create more time and space for your family. “It will be hard to create a quiet place where your children can find their souls, you must first quiet your own world and then approach theirs. They are accustomed to the barrage of noise and will complain loudly in its absence, but you can find a quiet way. What can you do today? A walk, a book, a simple game.” - William Martin, The Parent's Tao Te Ching: Ancient Advice for Modern Parents We see it all the time. Parents want to give every thing and every opportunity they possibly can to their children. The intention is good and yet there are always consequences. When we, as parents, slow down our lives, we set an example for our children that tells them it's ok for them to slow down as well, that it is ok to be still, and that they are enough without constantly reaching for more. When we create time and space, we create room for mindfulness, movement, and breath - the foundational building blocks of wellness. It's about limiting our activities, prioritizing play, being present, strengthening your family culture, and so much more. If you've heard us talk a little bit about family school and you're interested in learning more about how you can bring this philosophy into your home, this episode is for you. "While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about." - Angela Schwindt In this episode, we answer your questions about what family school includes, what are the benefits, and why we believe so strongly in this philosophy. We began this conversation about family schooling before the events of Covid-19 took place. It grew organically for us out of years of working with homeschool families and conversations we've had together over the past decades. Now, perhaps more than ever, it is essential that we turn our focus to this way of living and learning together. This episode is an introduction to our 5 tenets of Family School. Now our main focus of discussion today, however, is his time spent at a now-defunct small boarding school fo special needs adolescents in rural Hancock N.Y. called The Family Foundation School, aka The Family School, aka Allynwood Academy. The school closed in 2014, They said it was due to money problems from declining enrollment. However they were plagued with accusations of abuse for many years. The family school was one of several residential programs for special-needs adolescents that were discussed in congressional hearings in 2007 and 2008.In 2018 a front page article in the New York Times described a pattern of deaths by overdoes, suicide and other misadventure among school alumni . One alumna tallied 101 such deaths, the vast majority of them before the age of forty.I can not begin to express the love in friendship I have with corey. This was not easy for him and we hope to shine some light on this tragedy as well as make some room for those dealing with trauma. To let you know ahead of time we dive into some sensitive subjects including violence, sexual misconduct and suicide. You can reach Corey via email at Coreyc2c@gmail.comYou can read more testimony and find more information about the family school here: http://www.thefamilyschooltruth.com/
