I was an subscriber to The Create Daily years ago and a fan of Screenwriter/Producer/Director Felicia Pride's work beginning with Really Love so it is an honor to have her on the podcast today. Her outlook on life as an artist is refreshing and in a season that, for me, is extremely challenging, her perspective comes right on time. Here's what we're talking about in today's episode: How she reaffirmed her relationship with writing after a seven-year hiatus How Felicia found creativity on her spiritual journey What she learned from the project that took her 10 years to make (& the creatives capacity for commitment) The origin of her production company, HONEY, CHILE and their mission for Black women 40+ (loved this!) Why she decided to do produce and direct a proof-of-concept for her feature film, LOOK BACK AT IT How she's creating new energy in her life right now Why “care” is a huge piece of the creative process The business case for Black women and why our community is so important The biggest piece that changed for her when she turned 40 and how that influenced her decision making The difference between being driven by purpose vs being driven by inflated ego Where she found her happy place within this industry and her relationship with expectations The two things that have contributed most to her spiritual and creative journeys Why she likes to explore Black love, coming home to ourselves and class in her art
We often only think of grief in relation to the loss of a loved one. We are whole humans, leading whole ass lives, and the trauma of loss is not exclusive to death. We lose jobs, we lose marriages, we lose relationships, we lose our identities and even our minds. Felicia and Ivy explore the different ways a variety of losses have affected their lives and what they learned from those experiences. It's 'Part Two' this week's @EchoChamberFP https://www.instagram.com/echochamberfp/ and this time, we bring you three vastly different, BUT, very good films!, Starting on Apple TV+ with a story of friendship from the future, then it's over to Netflix for a book adaptation that hits a racial & cultural nerve. And then, what could be this generation's 'Love Jones'! 'Finch' is a new dystopian feature on Apple TV+, directed by Miguel Sapochnik and written by Craig Luck & Ivor Powell. On a post-apocalyptic earth, Tom Hanks is Finch, a man who embarks on a moving and powerful journey to find a new home for his unlikely family—his beloved dog and a newly created robot—in a dangerous and ravaged world. Rebecca Hall adapts ‘Passing', Nella Larsen's celebrated 1929 novel of the same name for the big screen! It tells the story of two Black women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), who can “pass” as white but choose to live on opposite sides of the color line during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York. After a chance encounter reunites the former childhood friends one summer afternoon, Irene reluctantly allows Clare into her home, where she ingratiates herself to Irene's husband (André Holland) and family, and soon her larger social circle as well. As their lives become more deeply intertwined, Irene finds her once-steady existence upended by Clare. 'Really Love' is directed by Angel Kristi Williams and co-written by Felicia Pride. Set in contemporary Washington D.C., a rising black painter, Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe) strives to break into the competitive art world, while balancing a bittersweet romance he never expected with a strong & ambitious law student, Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing) with her own dreams, aspirations, and desires. Set in contemporary Washington D.C., Really Love is about a rising Black painter who strives to break into the competitive art world, while balancing a bittersweet romance he never expected. Co-Writer Felicia Pride talks to Write On about her screenwriting career: "My core is I'm a writer. I went to school for business because it sounded like a way to get a job, so I had a degree in marketing. I was very quickly bored at my first marketing job so I started writing on the side." Felicia gives advice on how to approach your writing career without fear. "Don't run from your gift… I've lived many lives and had many careers, and thankfully, they all now have helped me in some way in my current career, but the truth of the matter is that I was running from writing, I was running from my gift because I was scared to realize it." On this episode of Why Watch That:HIGHLIGHTED OFFERINGS FROM AFI FEST 2020 SO FAR:1. Special Presentation: Opening Night World Premiere: I’m Your WomanSuburban housewife Jean (Rachel Brosnahan, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) lives a seemingly easy life, supported by husband Eddie’s (Bill Heck) career as a thief. But when Eddie betrays his partners, Jean and her baby are forced to go on the run, and Eddie’s old friend Cal (Arinzé Kene) is tasked with the job of keeping them safe. After Cal mysteriously disappears, Jean befriends Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake), and the two women set out on a perilous journey into the heart of Eddie’s criminal underworld. A decidedly female take on crime dramas of the 1970s, I’m Your Woman is a tale of love, betrayal, motherhood, family and what it takes to claim your life as your own.**************************2. World Cinema: IndustryIn the latest series from HBO, an ambitious group of graduates compete for a permanent role at Piedmont, a top London bank. Harper, the sole American, with a mysterious past, navigates privilege and egos in this world of international finance, determined to prove herself as the best hire. Boundaries blur and rankings intensify within the group as they are immersed into a company culture driven by success at all costs. AFI FEST is honored to host the North American premiere of the first four episodes of this electric ensemble-drama.–Sarah Harris**************************3. New Auteurs: Nine DaysWhat if you had just a little over a week to persuade an enigmatic gatekeeper to allow you to be born? How would you proceed? Winston Duke plays the cryptic and somber Will, the figure in charge of selecting the right soul for life on Earth. Will interviews several prospective candidates, aided by his more light-hearted colleague Kyo, played by Benedict Wong. As one soul dies, another takes its place. But the choice of who makes the cut is fraught. The unborn — personifications of human souls — must demonstrate why they deserve life. One applicant, played by Zazie Beetz, challenges Will in unexpected ways. A beautifully crafted, heartfelt sci-fi film that explores the existential, NINE DAYS marks the directorial debut of Edson Oda. An innovative concept thoughtfully plotted, this metaphysical tale is at once artistic, thought-provoking and life-affirming. –Claudia Puig**************************4. Special Presentation: World Premiere: Really LoveSet in a gentrifying Washington, DC, a rising Black artist, Isaiah (Kofi Siriboe), spends most of his days pouring his heart into his paintings but still struggles to find his place in the prestigious and competitive art world. At a gallery show, Stevie (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing), an impressive and intelligent law student, catches his eye. A chance encounter is one thing, but the stars align and they meet again, leading to a whirlwind romance. When both Isaiah and Stevie hit crossroads in their careers, they are forced to consider if their relationship is a love for a season or a love for a lifetime. In director Angel Kristi Williams’s debut feature, she delivers a poignant look at the sacrifices we make for careers and life-changing relationships. This well-crafted script by Felicia Pride and Williams is complemented by an impeccable soundtrack and incredible art. –Eric Moore**************************5. Special Presentation: U.S. Premiere: A Suitable Boy1951. In a newly independent India, passionate literature student Lata Mehra defies tradition and her meddling mother’s wish to choose her a husband. Torn between family duty and the excitement of romance, Lata embarks on a journey of love and heartache as three very different men try to win her heart. Also threatening to break with tradition is the charming but directionless Maan Kapoor, whose romantic entanglements begin to jeopardize his father’s political career. As Lata and Maan attempt to shape their futures, India too is coming of age. Only a few years after independence from British colonial rule, tensions are high as its people prepare to campaign and vote in their first democratic general election. A Lookout Point production for the BBC, internationally distributed by BBC Studios.–Claudia Puig**************************6. New Auteurs: Shadow in the CloudOn a stormy night during World War II, a female pilot with top secret cargo talks her way on board a bomber plane about to take-off. The crass all-male crew reluctantly agrees, but their suspicions about her identity and the mysterious cargo quickly grow. Just then a shadow appears in the clouds — was it the incoming Japanese fleet? Or caused by some other sinister stowaway?SHADOW IN THE CLOUD is a thrilling nightmare in the sky and its lead, Chloë Grace Moretz, is a badass to be reckoned with. After her exciting horror short DO NO HARM dominated the festival circuit in 2017, director Roseanne Liang returns with a feature proving she is a dynamic and powerful female voice in genre filmmaking. –Sarah Harris**************************7. World Cinema: Sound of MetalA recovering drug addict, Ruben has finally achieved balance in his life and knows his place in the world. He spends his nights drumming in a heavy-metal band with his girlfriend, traveling from show to show in a ragged RV – it may not be much, but it is full of love. When his ear pops during a performance, Ruben thinks little of it at first, but his hearing quickly deteriorates. When your existence and love is music, what happens when your world suddenly changes?Riz Ahmed gives a powerful performance as a man on a complicated journey of grief and identity. With clever sound design and a sensitive script, SOUND OF METAL is a profound exploration on both the experience and culture of deafness. –Sarah Harris See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week Alrik and Liz welcome back previous 'Get Shorty' Filmmaker Felicia Pride on the show to talk about how she moved to LA at 35 and forged her filmmaking career through her own sheer will and hustle. Felicia talks about the steps she took in crucial points in her career, how she hit career milestones for herself and how she managed to sell a feature, land management and get staffed in a writers room all in the same year. This episode is a must listen if you feel like you missed your chance to have the career that you wanted because it really just shows that putting in the work and staying focused on your goals really pays off. We also have short filmmaker Parrish Stikeleather on the show to talk about his short film 'Long Drive to Yadkin' which we have deemed as a serious ode to the Cohen Brothers!
The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a Licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible version of ourselves. We know that our experiences of sexuality are as varied as we are and wanted to spend some time today digging into what it means to affirm your identity as a Queer person. For this conversation I was joined by Mychelle Williams, LPC. Mychelle and I chatted about what it might look like to explore your sexuality, some of the challenges Queer Black women experience in relationships, and how to find or cultivate spaces that are affirming of your identity. One theme that was consistent in our conversation was the impact that media can have on developing a healthy sense of self and of relationships as a queer person, so we also wanted to hear from an artist who is intentional about creating affirmative images of the Queer community. TV/Film Writer & Director, Felicia Pride also joined me to discuss her new short film, Tender. Felicia Pride creates content in all kinds of ways. She was a writer on Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar and is developing the erotic romance feature film Deeper with Universal Pictures and Will Packer Productions. She’s also the brains behind The Create Daily, a popular resource that curates jobs and opportunities for underrepresented creators. She says she created it in 2012 to thrive professionally and have ‘successful, long-ass fulfilling creative careers that we pay forward.’ Now she’s adding ‘Director’ to her title, with the online release of her short film, “tender,” which she has released through her production company Felix and Annie. The movie, which is a love letter to all Black women, follows two seemingly different women - as they share a very intimate morning after. Listen to her words of inspiration - and discover what exciting (network TV related) things are in her future. This week I discuss my third week of furlough from Walt Disney World, my own creative breakthrough, and how I’m staying sane. Felicia Pride, from episode 33, released her first short film this week - Tender. In this episode, she talks about applying to TV Writing competitions such as NBC on the Verge, the importance of informal mentors, self-care, and patience. Felicia wrote and directed Tender. Here's the official description: After an unexpected one night stand, two women at very different stages of their lives, share an even more intimate morning after Link to Felicia Pride’s Tender: https://www.vanndigital.com/watch-felicia-prides-tender-short-film/ Who is Felicia Pride? Two weeks ago, the Hollywood Reporter's feature No More "We Can't Find Any Black Female Writers" profiled Black woman screenwriters -- 62 to be exact -- to literally prove to Hollywood that there is a great pool of Black woman writers creating exceptional content and supporting (not competing) each other in the industry. And together, we smiled on the marking of another dope step toward making the case for our visibility, representation and overall a salute to our seat at the table. As we shine a light on the women writers of color who cleverly innovate the stories we watch on screen, I'd like to introduce to you another talented Black woman writer/producer on a personal mission to elevate our stories -- for us and by us: Felicia Pride. Felicia Pride has been winning 2018. In just one year, the cultural journalist turned author turned screenwriter achieved a career trifecta: Charles D. King’s MACRO (Fences, Mudbound) picked up her first feature film (Really Love, 2019), she sold a television pilot and in October, she a writer on Ava Duvernay’s Queen Sugar which airs on OWN. And earlier this month, Pride launched “Honey Chile,” a consumer facing digital brand of her production company, Felix & Annie, aimed at Gen X women -- and though she’s got over 15+ years in the writing game, it’s clear that Felicia’s rising star is next up to shine. Popularly known among creatives as the founder and voice of The Create Daily, a resource for underrepresented creators, Felicia Pride is a thought-leader among creative content creators. From VIBE to NYC’s book publishing scene to her short film The End Again, Felicia has proven to be one to watch. Tapped by Sean “Diddy” Combs’ communications team for her writing, she also worked with the mogul on the hit FOX show, THE FOUR and has become an in-demand speaker at events nationwide, including SXSW, TEDx, Film Independent Forum and AFI Docs. After a break from the writers life spent running her marketing consultancy focused on expanding audiences for impactful media projects, Felicia returned to her first love rejuvenated and with a fresh approach to storytelling, earning her a highly coveted spot in Film Independent’s Screenwriting Lab (2016) followed by NBC's Writers on the Verge program (2017). She chronicles her journey from a creative rut to creative zone in a chapter series (and course!) she penned titled The Creative Comeback. Felicia is currently a writer on Ava DuVernay’s QUEEN SUGAR and the co-writer and executive producer of the upcoming 2019 feature film REALLY LOVE produced by Charles D. King’s MACRO. After graduating from Emerson College with her master’s degree in writing, literature and publishing, she worked in New York’s book publishing scene, pre-Kindle era, before carving out a niche for herself advocating for and covering the literary world from an African-American perspective. Pride eventually became an author, penning six books, including the young adult novel, PATTERSON HEIGHTS, recognized by the American Library Association. She was tapped by Simon & Schuster to pen two books in their EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS book series based on the hit show. By day, she served as the Director of Independent Film at Tugg, acquiring films for theatrical and educational distribution while writing screenplays at night. By 2016, she was selected as a Film Independent Screenwriting Fellow and in the following year, Pride was chosen as one of eight writers for NBC’s Writers on the Verge program for television writing. Now, she’s setting her sights on building her production company Felix & Annie, that’s dedicated to creating dope film, TV, digital, and book projects for Gen X audiences of color.
