AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Eric Moore from Norbrook Laboratories, and Dr. John Sharpe, a practicing veterinarian in Kansas and a 2023 graduate of Kansas State University.  This podcast is sponsored by Norbrook. Having the right antibiotics is critical to successfully treating seasonal diseases. Norbrook offers a variety of effective and value driven solutions such as Noromycin 300 LA, Norfenicol Injectable Solution, Tulieve Injectable Solution, Enroflox 100 Injectable Solution, and Cefenil RTU. To learn more, contact your Norbrook sales representative, your animal health distributor, or visit the Norbrook website.  Sharpe discusses the seasonal variation of disease patterns he sees in his bovine practice and how these patterns influence antibiotic use as well as the producer's bottom line. He also shares his experiences with the implementation of GFI #263 which transitioned the remaining medically important over-the-counter antimicrobials to prescription status with veterinary oversight. We also discuss how he, as a veterinarian, walks through his decision-making processes for selecting an antimicrobial to treat an animal, herd or in protocol development. Moore provides some background on the frustration producers face when they experience treatment failure, how prevention is the most important part of a stewardship program, and what antibiotics do not do so that producers can understand how to use them properly and promote animal health.  Listen to the previous podcast with Dr. Eric Moore on implementation of GFI #263 here. Make sure to visit the Norbrook booth at the AABP tradeshow at the upcoming 57th AABP Annual Conference in Columbus, Ohio, September 12-14, 2024.

90 minute sets, a word to mouth ground swell, and hard curfews. Lucas Harwood (King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Heavy Moss) “Formed in 2011 in Melbourne, Australia, by a group of friends who jammed frequently, then decided on a whim to play a show, the lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Stu Mackenzie, harmonica player/singer Ambrose Kenny-Smith, guitarists Cook Craig and Joey Walker, bassist Lucas Skinner, and dual drummers Michael Cavanagh and Eric Moore. They released two garage rock-inspired EPs in 2011, Anglesea and Willoughby's Beach, then in 2012 released their debut album, 12 Bar Bruise. Working at the kind of feverish pace that became their standard, King Gizzard followed up just five months later with 2013's Eyes Like the Sky, which the band described as a "spaghetti Western audio book" complete with narration by Ambrose Kenny-Smith's father, the noted Australian musician Broderick Smith. A third full-length, Float Along, Fill Your Lungs, was released in 2013 and was quickly followed by 2014's Oddments and I'm in Your Mind Fuzz. Still working quickly, in early 2015 they released the Quarters EP, which featured four trippy, free jazz-inspired jams that each timed out exactly at 10:10.” Excerpt from https://www.allmusic.com/artist/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-mn0003085959/biography King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard: Bandcamp: https://kinggizzard.bandcamp.com Instagram: @kinggizzard Website: https://kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com Merch: https://gizzverse.com Heavy Moss: Bandcamp: https://heavymoss.bandcamp.com Instagram: @heavy_moss Merch: https://heavymoss.bandcamp.com/merch/heavy-moss-milkman-t-shirt The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5Ndle3K... What do Veterinarians Need to Know about FDA Guidance for Industry #263?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2023 44:24

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Eric Moore, an AABP member who is Director of Technical Services at Norbrook. Guidance for Industry (GFI) #263 is part of the FDA's five-year plan which will move the remaining medically important antimicrobials under veterinary oversight. This means that all medically important antimicrobials that are currently marketed as over-the-counter (OTC) medications will be moved to prescription (Rx) status. About 95% of antimicrobials sold in the U.S. are administered by feed or water. The remaining 5% of dosage forms include both OTC and Rx products and this move will ensure that all medically important antimicrobials are under the oversight of the veterinarian who has a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship with the producer. Moore discusses the products that will be affected that cattle veterinarians and producers use, as well as discuss what will happen as these products have a change in marketing status. This implementation will be different than the implementation of the Veterinary Feed Directive where on that date, no products could be used that did not have an associated authorization VFD from the veterinarian. OTC products will have their labels changed to Rx; however, those products currently in commerce after June 11, 2023, will be able to be exhausted and newly labeled products will require a prescription from the veterinarian. Moore suggests that veterinarians familiarize themselves with the regulation and make sure to communicate these changes to producers in their communities. Producers should make sure they have a valid VCPR prior to the need for the medications and that veterinarians continue to implement antimicrobial stewardship plans on their clients' operations. This includes the question “why are you using this antimicrobial?” as the first step in stewardship is preventing disease.  Relevant links:FDA Frequently Asked Questions on GFI #263 GFI #263 Recommendations for Sponsors of Medically Important Antimicrobials FDA GFI #263 Text AABP Guidelines for Establishing and Maintaining the VCPR in Bovine Practice AABP Key Elements for Implementing Antimicrobial Stewardship Plans in Bovine Veterinary Practices Working with Beef and Dairy Operations AVMA Resources on GFI #263

Criticism is easily given, but rarely appreciated. At some point we have all had to critique someone else's work or be critiqued by a client, manager, or teacher. The experience can be emotionally rattling. In part four of our design thinking talk, Eric Moore and Chris Do discuss ways to improve how you give and receive critique. A key component of constructive criticism is having a shared criteria to review the work. During their conversation, Chris and Eric share memorable stories of critique from their experience as students, teachers, and professionals. Pro tip: grab a pen and paper before you listen to this one. You will want to take notes. Creative ideas are tough to sell. They start vague and, until fully realized, are malleable concepts prone to change. So how do you prove the value of an idea before it is created? With design thinking, of course. In part three of our design thinking conversation, Eric Moore joins Chris Do to discuss what is at the heart of this beloved concept: knowing your audience. You may hear design thinking referred to as human-centered design. That idea of designing with people in mind is what makes design thinking both a mindset and a framework. And the main ingredient is empathy. In this chat, Eric shares stories from his experience using design thinking at scale and working with enterprise-level SaaS companies. He also offers a free (no strings attached) gift that you can download from thedesignthinker.org. Now that we understand what design thinking is, it is time we learn how to use it. In part two of our design thinking discussion, app designer Deanna joins Eric and Chris to walk us through her practical application of the framework. We start by explaining the four phases of the design thinking process and follow Deanna's story and design process for context. We also discuss how making empathy maps (and what they are), Eric's cleverly named rose-thorn-bud concept, and where data analysis and confirmation bias come into play. Eric Moore is a communication strategist and champion of design thinking. In this episode, he and Chris debate an eyebrow-raising talk from Natasha Jen called Design Thinking Is Bullsh*t. For context, Natasha Jen is an acclaimed designer and partner at the renowned design studio, Pentagram. In her talk, Natasha criticizes the concept of design thinking, ultimately calling it B.S. But is that true? Is design thinking just a sticky note ladened buzzword, or is it woefully misunderstood? If you are unsure what design thinking is (and whether it is a tool worth learning), this episode is for you. The ruling from a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit amounts to an overwhelming victory for the Justice Department, clearing the way for investigators to continue scrutinizing the documents as they consider whether to bring criminal charges over the storage of of top-secret records at Mar-a-Lago after Trump left the White House.
