Louisville is getting a new international grocery store — which got us talking about the market's needs on this week's Access Louisville podcast.LBF Reporter Joel Stinnett joins the show this week to tell us about Saraga International Grocery, which has signed a lease and will open its first area store at 200 N. Hurstbourne Parkway inside The Forum Center. This was formerly the site of Lucky's Market, which closed amid a company bankruptcy in 2020. This gets us talking about what we'd like to see in the grocery market in Louisville — a second Trader Joe's and more options inside the Watterson Expressway are on our wishlist. In other grocery news, Stinnett also tells us about the latest with Hy-Vee. In spite of delays, the Des Moines, Iowa-based grocery retailer says it is still planning to open a location in Kentucky. It initially announced plans to build in the Fern Creek area in 2021 but it has yet to happen.Bourbon and restaurant newsLater in the show, we discuss some bourbon industry news with LBF reporter Stephen P. Schmidt, including the auction of a distillery in Downtown Louisville. This auction includes aging bourbon, equipment as well as real estate and other assets. We also talk about a new downtown tasting room for Green River Distilling Co., which sounds  different than some of the other tasting rooms you can find in that it'll have a more sports bar like atmosphere.Finally we wrap up the show with a bit of restaurant and bar news, including the news that Baxters 942 is losing its liquor license. News of yet another Publix location coming to Louisville has the potential to shake up the grocery market locally. We chat about that on this week's Access Louisville podcast. Lakeland, Florida-based Publix announced a new store coming to the corner of Flat Rock Road and Shelbyville Road earlier this week. Reporter Eleanor Tolbert, who joins the podcast this week, explains this is the third store Publix has announced for Louisville. One other Publix store is under construction at 2500 Terra Crossing Boulevard and a second one is planned at the corner of Ballardsville and Brownsboro Road in Louisville. Tolbert has also done some internet sleuthing and found there might be one more Publix in the works in Fern Creek — though that's not official yet.Tolbert has been following developments closely in grocery/retail trends in Louisville lately, particularly since writing a special report on the subject earlier this year. As mentioned in that report, The Kroger Co. owns 43% of the local grocery market share, with 43 stores in the area, according to Tampa, Florida-based retail data provider Chain Store Guide. When we were kids we all wanted to be a soldier fighting an enemy in war or an Astronaut in space. As kids, we played outside with sticks for rifles; used sound effects for bullets and bombs. We would even pretend to be wounded. War to us then was a fictional place where you could be a hero then go home for dinner. Like my friends, our fathers before us served in World War II and Korea. They knew the truth of war because they lived it but rarely ever talked about it. We grew up watching actors like John Wayne, Audie Murphy, and so many others as heroes fighting Germans and Japanese during World War II. I was especially drawn to the aviators like Chuck Yeager, Jimmy Doolittle, and astronauts of the Gemini and Apollo era. They seemed larger than life, and I wanted to be like them. I have lived a purpose driven life since I was eighteen. My childhood was wonderful. In May of 1968 we moved into our new home. I grew up on a street called Cool Brook in Louisville, Kentucky in a small town called Fern Creek or at least it was back then. My family consists of myself and two older brothers. Summer of that year I went with a friend and his family to see 2001 A Space Odyssey at a drive-in theater. That was the year the movie was released. When I was a little boy my mom and dad took me to a local carnival where they were giving helicopter rides. I got a ride in one which was the first time I had left the Earth since I was born. It sure was fun and it gave me my first taste of flying. Two close friends of my mother were Billy Davis and his wife. Billy was an aerial photographer for the Courier Journal newspaper in Louisville. He owned his own plane. When I was a young teenager, he took us flying in his plane. This would be the second time I flew, and it was far more thrilling. Little did I know then that I would fly again during my service in the Air Force, and become part of an elite combat fighter squadron called the 72nd Tactical Fighter Squadron originally created after Pearl Harbor in April of 1942. In the military, I was in charge of not just machinery but airmen as well. My civilian life was quite different. In civilian life I was never the boss of anything, save raising my three kids on my own. I never held a public office. I never made much money. I never chased any of the contemporary definitions of success—popularity, power or position. Yet, despite my humble life, my kids, grand kids, and great-grandchildren will know about me. I hope that through this book my family and future generations will know who I was, and what I did. I hope that my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who read my autobiography will come to know me, and have a better understanding of the sacrifices made by Cold War veterans as well as veterans in any conflict. Maybe it will make up for not being able to spend time with them while they grew up. Most importantly, I want to share my memories in the hope that my experiences will serve as an example for future generations who must make difficult decisions, and possibly put their lives on the line for the preservation of liberty. To date, the Cold War was the longest and one of the most misunderstood wars in American history. It lasted 46 years. I am the grandson of a World War I veteran and the son of a World War II Veteran. I am an American Airman and a Cold War Veteran. This is my story.

How many of you have dreamed of walking away from your daily job and starting your own business? Meet Laura Watkins, a woman who did just that. Upon earning her bachelor's degree in Marketing and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Louisville, she entered the corporate workforce. However, her true goal had always been to open her own business. When a co-worker asked her, "If you could do absolutely anything, what would it be?" the answer seemed to fall out of Laura's mouth: "I would quit my job, go to hair school and open an Aveda salon." And within a year, that's exactly what she did. At age 30 Laura resigned her corporate job and began the journey to get her cosmetology license. Fast forward to 2021 and Laura's salon, Pure Salon Spa, an Aveda salon and spa on Bardstown Road in Fern Creek, which will celebrate its 13th year in business and has been ranked among the top 200 salons in North America by Salon Today Magazine for the past 10 years. Married for 18 years with two daughters, her other passions include empowering women, garnering more respect for careers in the beauty industry, and very importantly for Laura from a personal standpoint, ending the stigma associated with mental illness. Her passion around ending the mental illness stigma comes from her own struggles with severe depression, with which she was first diagnosed in 2015 and continues to seek treatment to stay mentally well to this day. Laura had many misconceptions about mental illness until it happened to her, and she firmly believes there is still a long way to go with ending those preconceived notions, which means talking more and more about it to raise awareness. One in four people struggle with mental illness in her/his lifetime and that means there are a LOT of people out there struggling alone. Laura wants to change that! The Louisville Free Public Library nearly lost two branch locations and $2.26 million from its overall library funding under Mayor Greg Fischer's proposed budget cuts. Lawmakers ultimately approved less drastic reductions, but the library system will still have to close its branch location in Fern Creek and curtail services. We talk with officials about the system's services, and why they are calling for public support ahead of their expected challenges. Louisville-native and restaurateur Kent Taylor has a passion for the food industry and for skiing. Taylor began with a humble start as a worker at Captain’s Quarters along the Ohio River. He left this position to attend school at the University of North Carolina. His love for skiing led him to Colorado after college, where he managed nightclubs and restaurants. Taylor returned to Louisville in 1990, and within a year he received financing for his idea of a Colorado-themed bar and grill, now known as Buckhead Mountain Grill. Buckhead thrived and expanded. A few years later, Taylor sold this chain and turned his attention to his new idea of a Texas-themed steakhouse. In 1993, Texas Roadhouse was born in Indiana. Word of mouth spread, business boomed, and today there are 335 locations across 46 states. In 2009, Taylor opened Aspen Creek Restaurant in Fern Creek, featuring menu items under $10. When he’s not opening restaurants, Taylor can often be found on the ski slopes.
