This week, Brie grills California Representative Ro Khanna on why progressives hesitate to call out Joe Biden, along with “rotating villains” Manchin & Sinema, for his role in obstructing democratic policies from a $15 min wage to student debt cancellation. Why should we trust Biden's “heart” is in the right place on $15 an hour or the infrastructure bills if he declines to use tools in his arsenal — namely executive orders — to advance is own agenda? Is focusing on the good stuff coming out of the infrastructure negotiations merely giving credit where credit is due? Or is it ultimately a tactic used to distract voters from remembering all that was prematurely bargained away by Democrats who seem allergic to leverage? Did progressives miscalculate by not demanding a $15 min wage be included in the “must pass” Covid bill last March? And why isn't Biden called out as the person responsible for that provision being removed. (Can't blame the parliamentarian for everything). Brie also asks Khanna about his Colin Powell tribute tweet, and why progressives continue to participate in the hagiography of war criminals. Happy International Podcast Day! We have a Breaking News bonus mini-episode! Miguel spoke with Unite Here Local 2 Organizer Ted Waechter about the San Francisco Giants/Oracle Park food service workers' labor victory announced on September 29, 2021. The workers are voting and ratifying their new bargaining contract with their employer, Bon Appetit, today, September 30, 2021. However, as workers vote to ratify their new contract and we celebrate this significant victory for organized labor and all service workers, Unite Here Local 2 and the San Francisco Giants food service workers still have one crucial demand: They call on the @SFGiants and @sfgov to follow Los Angeles County's lead and require fans to present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to enter Oracle Park. Also, look out for another new episode this weekend! Miguel Garcia produced this episode. Sports As A Weapon is now part of the @Anticonquista Collective Network. Some general housekeeping items. We discussed how Kyrsten Sinema betrayed progressive Democrats and how they are now getting a taste of wokeism for criticizing her. How people seemed to be "plugged into the Matrix" when it comes to Covid and politics in general. We also touched on Dr. Seuss and more cancel culture, Trump's CPAC speech, and how learning from the evils perpetrated through history is good for the future of society.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/TwoDoomedMen)
Republicans want to fight about Dr. Seuss, while Democrats fight (among themselves? really?) about a $15 minimum wage. Never Trumpers, meanwhile, are obsessed with their ancestors and forget once again all about the Obama Administration. Blue Gal shares a book she's reading, and Driftglass wonders about writing one. (It's kind of like Gulag Archipelago, but instead of being condemned to a Russian prison camp, he's just off Twitter. One Tweet in the Life of Ivan Denisovich?) The minimum wage has not been raised in a substantial way for 15 to 20 years. Meanwhile, corporations have taken away basic benefits, like health insurance and retirement, profit sharing. International affairs and security analyst Mark Sleboda discusses the Biden administration’s first tough-on-Russia moves with Misfit hosts Bob Schlehuber and Michelle Witte. They also get into the ongoing EU-Russia spat, Biden’s troubling Iran stance, John Kerry’s private candour on Syria and the return of ISIS to that country. Author and economist John Ross, a senior fellow of the Chongyang Institute at Renmin University of China, discusses the economic dishonesty at the heart of the minimum wage debate in the US, the real reason covid remains so uncontrolled in the US and the future of employment in a very changed post-pandemic landscape. Jamal "DJ One Luv" Muhammad, host of the Love Lounge radio show and The Old School Lunch Bag Mix, talked about his return to the gym; statehood for Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico; the state of American democracy; and the efforts underway and obstacles ahead of reformist district attorneys around the country. The Misfits also talked about the saga of Britney Spears, the new documentary about her, the media feeding frenzy that upended her life and the people now, via social media, trying to liberate the pop star from what they see as a gilded prison.

Fun fact: the profit margin for most businesses is about 8 percent. When you’re talking about categories like restaurants and retail stores, that margin drops to around 2 percent. Yet, some people still seem to believe that all companies are perfectly capable of simply absorbing dramatic increases in their operating costs—namely, labor—with no changes in behavior by these companies. Artificially inflating labor costs, as in the form of minimum wage increases, will not lead to decreased hours, lay-offs, deferred hiring, decreases in benefits, or increased prices for consumers because… reasons. And if you voice disagreement with any of these beliefs, then you must just hate the poor or other ad hominem claims. But who really “hates” the poor based on actual policy outcomes, the #FightFor15 crowd or those who oppose minimum wage hikes? President-Elect Donald Trump’s early morning tweets have people concerned he is planning to crack down on the First Amendment with regard to flag burning. Unfortunately, his troubling ideas have long been political consensus in Washington. The Trump Era is starting to resemble the Reagan era in more ways than one. A bunch of far-right lunatics have started a Satanic Ritual Panic, and are targeting a Pizza Place in Northwest DC, with their venom. DCist Associate Editor Rachel Kurzius brings us up to speed. Also, Trump said during the campaign that wages are too high. Well, the Fight for 15 is ready to convince him otherwise. Today marked the first major labor actions since Trump was elected to call for a 15 dollar an hour minimum wage. We’ll have that story in our People’s Bulletin. And finally, Trump’s narrative of being opposed to the Iraq War is looking more and more obscene, now that he’s putting together his cabinet. Democratic Lawmakers are calling him out on this. Sadly, only four of them.

Donald Trump is trying to put his birther past behind him now that he’s tantalizingly close to winning the White House. The best way to do that might be by starting a new scandal. Also, what should Hillary Clinton do now that she’s losing voters to far-right Libertarian Gary Johnson. And we report on a bit of good news. Migrant farmworkers in Washington State won recognition of their union last week. We discuss it with Maru Mora Villalpando, communications coordinator of their union, Familias Unidas Por La Justicia. Finally, John Boehner is loving life right now: drinking wine, chain-smoking cigarettes and taunting his enemies on Twitter for their embarrassing failures. He’ll have less time to do that, however, now that he has taken a job as a tobacco lobbyist. At least he’s practicing what he preaches!

More hacked documents from within the Democratic Party were released by Guccifer 2.0. The latest batch includes a memo informing Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) staff how to handle the Black Lives Matter movement. Depressingly, it informs staff to not endorse any specific policy situations called for by the civil rights group. And Americans view labor unions more positively. That’s good news for non-union workers who, according to a study, would see their pay increase if more Americans were unionized. We talk with one of the co-authors of that study, Washington University Sociologist Jake Rosenfeld. Finally, the Fifteenth anniversary of 9/11 is around the corner. And--just in time for it--President Obama extended the State of Emergency declared by George W. Bush in September 2001. We discuss the extension in a Classified Session.
