What is life like for someone who grew up in a strict Catholic family and then loses faith? Donna Freitas will tell you.

Donna Freitas wants to believe. Raised Catholic, she sang songs about Jesus as a child and lived in a house where nuns and priests were regular guests, yet she found herself questioning the faith of her family, examining the reasons none of it added up, and distancing herself from the God of Christianity-- now she is trying to find her faith again.
Our guest, Donna Freitas, talks about her recent book, Wishful Thinking: How I Lost My Faith, and Why I Want to Find It Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Until you know the "why" of your book, you may struggle to structure it. So believes Donna Freitas, Brooklyn-based author of fiction and nonfiction. Her writing has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The LA Times, among other places. She is currently on faculty at Fairleigh Dickinson University's MFA in Creative Writing. In this delightful episode, Donna discusses the "hooking and holding" approach to writing chapters. She says that your first draft is for you. You get to be selfish when writing your first draft, and it's important that you learn not to be afraid to sit down and write for you.
Throughout human history, men have been the storytellers and the scribes. How might our cultures have changed if we also had versions of herstory to study and learn from? Who might we be today if matriarchy guided our dreams, ambitions, and basic needs? To ponder these questions and understand how women can lean into their power, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors who research stories of power, equality, and respect. Elizabeth Lesser shares stories of women in history who have had their voices quelled in her book, Cassandra Speaks: When Women are the Storytellers, the Human Story Changes . Donna Freitas discusses the years of research she assembled which led to her book, Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention .
Anna Brooke was born with a health issue which means that pregnancy and childbirth could be very dangerous for both herself and the child. Over time, she came to accept that she wouldn't be able to have biological kids of her own. So instead of becoming a mother to the teen daughter she used to write to in her diary, Anna now works as a high school teacher. She's showing her students that there are other ways to live. I'm so happy to be able to complicate the narrative around people without children, and super grateful to Anna for being so open, honest and vulnerable about her childfree journey.Check out Anna's artwork here. The books we discussed in this episode: Regretting Motherhood by Orna Donath, Selfish, Shallow and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers On The Decision Not To Have Kids, edited by Meghan Daum, and The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano by Donna Freitas (who's been on the We are Childfree podcast!)This podcast is made possible by the generous support of the We are Childfree membership community. Washington Post columnist Christine Emba offered her thoughts on sexual consent and societal attitudes toward sex in the 21st century. She was interviewed by author Donna Freitas. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Olivia's Book Club Podcast has survived its first year! The podcast launched on May 17, 2021 with three episodes featuring novelists Kristin Hannah, Donna Freitas, and Jennifer Weiner, and book recommendations from Margaret Stewart. Don't pack for your Memorial Day weekend without listening to these book recommendations! Debut novelists Zakiya Dalila Harris (THE OTHER BLACK GIRL,) Ashley Audrain (THE PUSH,) and T.J. Newman (FALLING) share their journeys to publishing a buzz-worthy book. Boss of the bestseller list Colleen Hoover (REMINDERS OF HIM, IT ENDS WITH US) talks to Olivia about her previous career in social work and her non-profit The Bookworm Box. Historical fiction favorites Kristin Harmel (THE FOREST OF VANISHING STARS,) JoJo Moyes (THE GIVER OF STARS) and Kristin Hannah (THE FOUR WINDS) talk about the research that goes into these novels, and the ways plot and characters can transform from draft to draft. If these authors have piqued your interest, there is much more to each conversation. Just search for the author by name in the Olivia's Book Club podcast library for more book talk.

In Donna Freitas' new novel, The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano, the eponymous heroine faces a dilemma. Before she got married, her husband promised her he didn't want children - but now he's changed his mind. Could happily childfree Rose will herself to become a mother in order to save her relationship, and if so, what might her life look like? Author Freitas found herself in this very scenario in her real life, and it made her question everything - her lack of a maternal instinct, her worth as a woman, what kind of future she could hope for, without children - or her husband - in it. It was so enlightening to speak to someone who's looked at the childfree choice from every possible angle, as a scholar of religion and gender studies, and the author of a Sliding Doors-style plot that dares to ask: what if...?Learn more about Donna at donnafreitas.com and follow her on Instagram at @donnafreitas.writer. Deborah Tuerkheimer served for five years as an Assistant District Attorney in the New York County District Attorney's Office, where she specialized in domestic violence and child abuse prosecution. In her new book Credible: Why We Doubt Accusers and Protect Abusers, she provides a much-needed framework to explain how we perceive credibility, why our perceptions are distorted, and why these distortions harm survivors. Social hierarchies and inequalities foster doubt that is commonplace and predictable, resulting in what Tuerkheimer calls the “credibility discount”—our dismissal of claims by certain kinds of speakers—primarily women, and especially those who are more marginalized. The #MeToo movement has exposed how victims have been badly served by a system that is designed not to protect them, but instead to protect the status quo. Credibility lies at the heart of this system. Drawing on case studies, moving first-hand accounts, science, and the law, Tuerkheimer identifies widespread patterns and their causes, analyzes the role of power, and examines the close, reciprocal relationship between culture and law—guiding us toward accurate credibility judgments and equitable treatment of those whose suffering has long been disregarded. #MeToo has touched off a massive reckoning. To achieve lasting progress, we must shift our approach to belief. Credible helps us forge a path forward to ensuring justice for the countless individuals affected by sexual misconduct. Praise for Credible “This is not just an important book. It's way more than that—it's a new algorithm, an upending of long-held beliefs kept in place by law and culture. If we rewire ourselves to respond more fairly to the accusations that come our way, law reform and culture change will follow. Over time we can dismantle the credibility complex." —Elizabeth Lesser, bestselling author of Cassandra Speaks and Broken Open “Deborah Tuerkheimer makes a brilliant, clear, and convincing legal case in Credible that justice for survivors requires basic changes in the law. But she makes an equally compelling plea for something with even more world-historical ambition: a transformation that is needed in the court of public opinion so that women's dignity—and credibility—is finally seen as equal to men's.” —Jackson Katz, PhD, educator and author of The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help “In Credible, Tuerkheimer tells a range of stories of victim-survivors of sexual assault and harassment. What's different is that she traverses these stories through the lens of credibility—the ways in which its absence (or in rare cases, its presence) will make all the difference in someone's recovery and healing. This is essential reading not only for those deeply invested in #MeToo activism and scholarship and for victim-survivors who will finally feel seen but also for anyone who has ever known a victim. Which is to say, Tuerkheimer's book is essential reading for everyone.” —Donna Freitas, author of Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Vibe Check Welcome to our very special MOM episode! Gwen works with her mom and admires her ambition, as well as her eye-opening carpool tactics. Danielle learned to make time for herself from her mom, who has two masters and her PhD, all of which she earned AFTER she had kids. Our moms are the very best! Pop Culture MOMS! Gwen chose two Iconic TV moms: Lorelai Gilmore from Gilmore Girls and Lucille Bluth (RIP Jessica Walters) from Arrested Development – both of whom could be considered terrible mothers... Danielle: Clair Huxtable really had it all. Molly Weasley from the HP series, especially when she takes out Bellatrix. Rainbow Johnson from Black-ish because she's quirky and always there for her kids. Morticia Addams wasn't afraid to show affection to Gomez. Marmee from Little Women is perhaps the quintessential mother. (Also, terrible moms: Lily Vander Woodsen from Gossip Girl, Ellis Grey on Grey's Anatomy, also ALL the parents on Riverdale—loved this PopBuzz article dissecting why!) Recs from ASHLEY AUDRAIN Ashley's debut novel, THE PUSH, is now available! Donna Frietas talks with Zibby about how her own life experiences inspired her new book, The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano, and how writing it helped her heal certain wounds. Episode one thirty six - part three In the Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano, we find a young woman's life take different routes which all hinge on her decision as whether or not she decides to have a baby. We got to talk with author Donna Freitas about how motherhood is not framed as a choice for women, and how Covid has exposed the lions share of work which is put upon mothers specifically. We also chatted a bit about those mythical early days of quarantine, where life consisted of wine and Tiger King.

The CumQueens conclude their interview with Donna Freitas, author of Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention. We discuss the issues involved with reporting sexual harassment and violence and how we can take our power back despite the mandatory reporting system being designed to protect the institution and not the victim. Part of taking that power back is being able to celebrate your sexuality while protecting yourself from those that have malintent. We walk away with the reassurance that we are not alone in our experiences. The more we talk about this uncomfortable topic the more we are able to break the cycle of abuse and are able to support each other. In the CumQueens' first interview, we talk with Donna Freitas as she shares her experience of being stalked by a trusted mentor while she was in grad school. We learn about her non-disclosure agreement and why she decided to write her book in spite of it. We discuss accountability and power dynamics in relationships and the ways in which consent plays a part in all facets of our lives. We explore how shame and self-blame plays a part in almost every survivor's story. We talk about how the memoir happened to coincide with the #MeToo Movement and discuss the recent sentencing Harvey Weinstein. Donna discusses how the responses to her book have given her a sense of healing and closure that she did not get from her university or abuser. We want to thank Donna Freitas again for speaking with us and sharing her story. This is the first part of our interview so be sure to come back next week to hear the rest! Whether you find yourself out in public, or in the privacy of your own home, chances are that when you are in the presence of others, many of them have their eyes focused on their smartphone screens. Our lives are so focused on our phones that we are seeing the breakdown of relationships, attention spans, and critical thinking. What would happen if we locked our phones away for an entire week? College professor Donna Freitas recently conducted an experiment where she had her students untether for seven days. Join us for a lively and eye-opening conversation with Donna about what she and her students learned about our dependence on smartphones and what happens when we shut down, on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.Find full notes here: https://cpyu.org/resource/episode-98-no-phones-for-a-week-with-donna-freitas/
In this weeks episode, Jessy and Rebekah get deep on Title XI! It is a follow up episode to our amazing interview with Donna Freitas, author of the book Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention. Before you get into it, make sure to check us out on glow.fm/welcometomyvagina where you can become a monthly subscriber and get all kinds of swag AND a super awesome monthly bonus episode! 01:30: Want to learn a little bit more about pay inequality in soccer? Here is the latest information and how the U.S. Soccer and the president, Carlos Cordeiro, along with some nonsense libertarian think tank publications, seem to think that, actually, everything is fine. It isn’t. 03:45: Here is one of the fun articles Rebekah wrote when she decided to poke the bear’s nest, AKA the MRA’s. Enjoy. She sure did. 05:15: Whelp, here it is. Thanks to Betsy DeVos, most unqualified person to ever lead the Department of Education, all these MRAs are filing civil rights claims that basically say that women’s groups on campus are discriminating against men. This is after they spent years suing women-owned businesses. Here’s the thing. If women sued all the men-owned businesses we wouldn’t even have time to take a shit. 08:45: Listen to our amazing episode with Donna Freitas. And read her book! 11:40: Here is an AMAZING video on Holly Knox who founded the Project on Equal Education Rights (PEER) in the early 1970s. 15:00: Check out Girls for Gender Equity which is an AMAZING organization. They work really hard to empower girls and young women of color. This is really what our future relies on. 25:00: Remember Producer Cait? In this episode Jessy and Rebekah speak with Title IX expert and author of the newly published memoir, Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention. This book is all about Donna’s experience being stalked by her professor/advisor in graduate school – something that seriously impacted her experience, her well-being and her career post-graduation. In this conversation, we delve into her book, her career and how difficult and weighted it is for women to come forward and report abuse when the person abusing her has so much sway over her future. It is so complicated. But even through the heaviness and the complications rest assured we still found time to laugh! 00:30: Friends! We are really excited about our partnership with glow.fm. So much so that we are going to be offering exclusive content to our monthly subscribers! So visit glow.fm/welcometomyvagina to get in at the ground level! 02:30: You can purchase the print and e-version of Consent here. 03:30: We will be releasing an episode all about Title IX in the near future, but for those of your who are unclear as to what it is, here is a small primer from the organization “Know Your IX.” 18:50: Typically when we talk about mandatory reporting we are talking about people who have reason to suspect the abuse or neglect of a child – this applies to educators, athletic coaches, etc. But it also extends to people who suspect abuse or neglect of a dependent adult or an elderly person, or really to any member of a society. 33:30: Here is the best outline we could find on what Obama’s Title IX rules looked like. 34:00: “The Hunting Ground” is a 2015 documentary film about the incidence of sexual assault on campuses in the United States and the overwhelming failure of those institutions to adequately deal with them. Emma Sulkowicz was the Columbia University student who produced a piece of performance art called “Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight)” which involved them carrying a 50lb mattress on campus to express the burden that rape victims are forced to carry with them. 35:30: Here is a link to Michelle Obama’s speech after the Access Hollywood tape was released. Donna Freitas on her book; The Happiness Effect. Social media has become the dominant force in young people's lives, and each day seems to bring another shocking tale of private pictures getting into the wrong hands, or a lament that young people feel compelled to share their each and every thought with the entire world. Have smartphones and social media created a generation of self obsessed egomaniacs? More at www.abeautiful.world
The President Has Been Shot Today's topics include: That's what John heard over the PA system at South Hills Catholic High School - 56 years ago to the day - when JFK was assassinated... Next, Liz Allen (City Councilwoman, Erie PA) joins the show to discuss a mix of baseball and politics. Taxpayers helped build a ball park out in Erie for a team called the Seawolves, who serve as a Double-A affiliate for the Detroit Tigers. However, recent news is suggesting that Erie is among a list of many that could lose their team's affiliation...putting both the taxpayers and the city of Erie in a lurch. And finally, Donna Freitas (professor at Adelphi University) discusses a college class she taught, where she required her students to give up their smartphones for a week. What she learned from this experiment is both shocking and eye-opening.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
WLRN's Danielle Whitaker recently spoke with Donna Freitas, author of the newly released novel, Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention, which tells the story of a young woman who was stalked in an unconventional way by her mentor. Freitas is a writer and scholar who has conducted extensive research on students, consent, and sex on college campuses. She has spoken at nearly 200 colleges and universities about her research and has been published in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and The Washington Post. In this episode of FEAR NOT, author of The Happiness Effect, Donna Freitas shares her research into the effects of social media on our lives and our sense of self.
If you spend any time at all on social media, you know just how important the "likes" are. Getting "likes" and positive feedback on your posts in money in the bank. It's a sign of social media success. But does the pursuit of online attention and a growing number of followers cause us to compromise ourselves? Researcher Donna Freitas has found that our engagement with technology has led to what she calls the Happiness Effect. What this means is that we are very easily driven to appear perfect at any cost, including our ability to be vulnerable, honest and in community. We're talking to Donna Freitas about her book "The Happiness Effect" and a whole lot more on this episode of Youth Culture Matters.
In The Happiness Effect: How Social Media is Driving a Generation to Appear Perfect at Any Cost (Oxford University Press, 2017), Donna Freitas investigates the darker side of social media use and explains how pressure to appear happy and successful online can actually make people less happy in the real world. Using the stories of college students she interviewed as a framework, Freitas builds a dynamic argument and offers concrete tools for how teachers, parents, and society as a whole can help young people take control of their smartphones and of their own happiness. Donna Freitas is a Nonresident Research Associate at the University of Notre Dames Center for the Study of Religion and Society, and when she is not traveling for research she teaches in the Honors Colleges at Hofstra University. She is the author of Sex and the Soul: Juggling Sexuality, Spirituality, Romance, and Religion on America’s College Campuses (Oxford University Press, 2008), as well as several novels for young adults. A regular contributor to Publisher’s Weekly, she has also written for The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. Susan Raab is president of Raab Associates, an internationally recognized agency that specializes in marketing literature, products and initiatives that help improve the lives of young people. Clients have included National Geographic, Scholastic, the International Board on Books for Young People, and bestselling authors and illustrators. Susan is marketing advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). She’s also a journalist reporting on publishing, education and human rights. Her work as a broadcast correspondent has been hosted by the University of Connecticut, and by the University of Florida’s Recess Radio, a program syndicated to 500 public radio stations. On this week's 51%, a professor and researcher on topics related to Title IX and sexual assault publishes a letter to her stalker, and a woman talks about living under a VA tent. Two years. That's how long Donna Freitas' graduate school mentor, a priest and celebrated scholar, stalked her. Last year, Freitas released her book Consent: A Memoir of Unwanted Attention. She says writing the memoir made her feel more powerful than she had ever felt, and she wasn't afraid of him anymore. After years of fearing contact with her stalker, she was ready to speak directly to him. Her newest publication, Dear Professor: A Woman's Letter to her Stalker, allows her to do just that. Freitas spoke with 51%'s Elizabeth Hill about her memoir Consent, and how it led to her new letter Dear Professor. Now we head to Los Angeles' the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is trying a new way to help homeless veterans. It's allowing them to live in tents on the VA campus, where they can also receive food, health care and other services. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it's a model that could expand outside the VA. Matt Tinoco reports for the American Homefront Project. That's our show for this week. Thanks to Tina Renick for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett.
