Caterina Barbieri, Kali Malone, Moritz Von Oswald and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe discuss the role limitations play in the creative process, and whether they can be a source for creativity, if working with limitations helps sharpen one's aesthetics and define one's unique artistic voice, and whether human imagination needs limits to become limitless.Caterina Barbieri is a composer and modular synth artist whose sound draws from electronic, experimental and dance music. Her work is informed by an education in classical guitar and electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatory of Bologna, as well as the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and its famed centre for sound art, Elektronmusikstudion. She has spent a decade since her debut release, Vertical, breaking the rigid structures of electronic music and exploring how sound can induce both metaphysical and psycho-physical responses. Her most recent project, Myuthafoo, further investigates her interest in time, space, memory and emotion, and the links between them.Kali Malone is a composer and organist based in Stockholm. Her compositions are rich with harmonic texture through synthetic and acoustic instrumentation. In 2016 she co-founded the record label and concert series XKatedral, together with Maria W Horn, in Stockholm. Over the last few years she has released the critically acclaimed albums The Sacrificial Code, Living Torch, and Does Spring Hide Its Joy featuring Stephen O'Malley & Lucy Railton.Moritz Von Oswald is a dub techno pioneer producer and percussionist hailing from Berlin. He is the co-founder of production duo and record label Basic Channel. Prior to becoming one of the leading figures in electronic music in the 1990s, he played in one of the last incarnations of Palais Schaumburg. In a career spanning more than 30 years, he has worked with many legendary artists including Juan Atkins, Thomas Fehlmann, Carl Craig and Tony Allen. Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe is a Brooklyn-based artist, curator, composer and multi-instrumentalist. In 1997, he joined the band 90 Day Men before releasing solo projects under the moniker Lichens from 2004. He has collaborated on projects or provided sound in a featured artist capacity for such films as End of Summer, Sicario, Arrival, Last and First Men with Johann Johannsson and It Comes at Night with Brian McOmber. More recently, Robert has scored Il colpo del cane for Fulvio Risuleo, Candyman for Nia DaCosta, The Color of Care for Yance Ford and Master for Mariama Diallo.

I just got back from a week in Iceland so naturally I had to make a mix with music from Icelandic artists. The usual suspects are here - Sigur Ros, Johann Johannsson, Bjork, Olafur Arnalds, along with some new additions.  It still boggles my mind that the tiny island has produced such amazing music. But now, having been there, I guess it makes a bit more sense because the place is unique. The landscape and spirit seeps into your mind and body like hot water through porous volcanic rock. It's impossible not to fall in love with the people and the natural beauty.     Hopefully this mix can be your own mini vaca to Iceland. Treasury Bonds. China holds nearly 1 trillion dollars in U.S. securities. Most of it was bought during the financial banking crisis that began in 2008. By 2011 they had bought 1.5 trillion dollars to stop the bleeding. That debt paid 2% interest when our total Federal debt was 14.9 trillion dollars. The stock market dropped with the Dow Jones Average in 2007 at 16,000 to 6,400 in 2009, Today our Federal debt is over 31 trillion dollars and the Dow Jones is about 32,000 with the Federal Reserve raising interest rates to fight inflation. So why is Janet Yellen going to China? Does China want to sell 1 trillion dollars in Treasury Bonds? MUSIC John Williams,Johann Johannsson, Tyler Bates, Queen & Bowie

Jóhann Jóhannsson was one of contemporary cinema's greatest score composers when he passed away in 2018 at the young age of 48. Last and First Men, his enigmatic directorial debut, was released shortly after in 2020. Based on a novel by the same name by the British science fiction writer Olaf Stapleton, the film offers a sustained meditation on the prospect of extinction, the eventuality of humanity's disappearance from the comos. In this episode, JF and Phil discuss the images and sounds of the film as they flicker and swell against the backdrop of nonbeing that envelops us all. The conversation touches on the idea of beauty, Brutalist architecture, modernism, and futurity. He wanted to run a city for the good of the people, even if he ordered "Shoot to kill" protesters during the 1968 democratic convention. Machine politics is insestual. Andrew Cuomo resigned as the Governor of New York State, the son of a big time machine boss. Did Cuomo send elderly patients to their deaths in nursing homes? Book Vs Movie: “Arrival” The Ted Chiang Novella Vs the Amy Adams Film The Margos are looking into the world of language and SciFi with the Ted Chiang novella Story of Your Life published in 1998 and the 2016 movie directed by Denis Villeneuve Arrival.   (Warning! Spoilers coming right your way!) In the story, Dr. Louise Banks is a linguist and narrator tasked to help the U.S. Government with a group of alien shapeships who suddenly arrive. The aliens are “heptapods” and it is Banks’s job to try and create a common language with them. She is helped by Dr. Gary Donnelly and the two make contact with two heptapods named Flapper and Raspberry.  During this assignment, she learns that she will one day become a mother to a daughter who will die young. She can see in the future all of these interactions with her. She can also see that she marries Dr. Donnelly and he leaves her in the future.  If you have knowledge of the future, do you have an obligation to let others know? What if you have a child with someone and know when they will die? What is your obligation with this knowledge? The movie Arrival stars Amy Adams as Dr. Banks and Jeremy Renner (known as Ian Donnelly in the film) It would go on to receive eight Academy Awards nominations including for Best  Best Picture and Best Director. But NOT for Best Actress for Adams. BOO! So between the book and the film--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: Bio of author Ted Chiang The differences between book and film Would you want to know  The cast: Amy Adams (Dr. Louise Banks,) Jeremy Renner (Ian Donelly,) Forest Whitaker (Colonel Weber,) Michael Stuhlbarg (Agent Halpern,) Mark O’Brien (Captain Marks,) and Tzi Ma (General Shang.)  Clips used: Arrival trailer “A proper introduction…” “The nature of questions”   Film music by Johann Johannsson   Book Vs Movie is part of the Frolic Podcast Network. Shame, shame, shame. This country isn't a democracy, it's a plutocracy. You never see a politician sitting with the people in traffic court. Most people in the U.S. congress are multi millionaires. They aren't working for the people, they're working for the powerful corporations. While there was unprecedented suffering in this country the politicians failed to help the people. There's a reason why politicians need police protection and it's because this country is bankrupt in lots of ways. The politicians that live in gated communities aren't safe. For the new mixtape polish electronic jazz duo Skalpel brings a selection of the main inspirations behind their music. Skalpel, originally from Wrocław are DJs, musicians and record producers, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, who have been making music since the late nineties. Their musical style is a distinctive blend of local, traditional jazz inspirations and new electronica. Citing influences from the likes of Miles Davis, leftfield avant-garde, minimal, the duo alludes to roots in Polish jazz and trip-hop. This particular mixture caught the interest of Ninja Tune, the legendary record label founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut), where they released two albums: ‘ Skalpel ’ and ‘ Konfusion ’ gaining recognition worldwide. They became one of the first polish DJs to get recognition abroad. This year they released their third album in NoPaper Records/!K7, HIGHLIGHT, which has marked a significant shift in their creative technique, a shift away from samples to virtual instruments. For this mixtape, they want to portray their main inspirations: 'This is our origin story. Artist inspired by hip-hop and jazz such as The Herbaliser, Amon Tobin, Madlib and Jimi Tenor. Pioneers like Pierre Henry, David Axelrod production and Vangelis. And a section of Polish fusion, soul, avant-garde and broken beat including our postmortem collaboration with outstanding drummer Jacek Olter. Stylistically and technically this mix is inspired by the Solid Steel Radio Show - so it's archaeological digging in the crate. Some tracks are heavily edited some are blended (Sandy Nelson with Johann Johannsson and Penderecki) and the whole mix is a journey into the sound.' Tracklist: Pierre Henry and Michel Colombier - Masse Pour Le Temps Present - Prologue (Philips) Krzysztof Scieranski – ‘Wieloryb Basawy’ (Poljazz) The Cinematic Orchestra – ‘Diabolous’ (Ninja Tune) David McCallum – ‘House of Mirrors’ (Capitol) The Cinematic Orchestra – ‘Continuum’ (Ninja tune) Vangelis – ‘Hypothesis’ (part 1) (Affinity) The Herbaliser – ‘Mrs Chombee Takes The Plunge’ (DJ Food Re-Bake) (Ninja Tune) Wendy Carlos – ‘Fall’ (CBS) Vangelis – ‘Hypothesis’ (part 2) (Affinity) Niemen Enigmatic – ‘Kwiaty Ojczyste’ (Skalpel edit) (Polskie Nagrania) Skalpel & Jacek Olter – ‘Zero Gravity’ (Polskie Radio) Jimi Tenor & UMO –‘Sahkoinen Lali’ (Herakles Records) DJ Cam – ‘Voodoo Jazz’ (Inflamable Records) Zura – ‘Waz Fryzjerki’ (U Know Me Records) Amon Tobin – ‘Fast Eddie’ (Ninja Tune) Sandy Nelson – ‘Beat From Another World’ (Sunset) Johann Johansson – ‘Xenoanthropology’ (Deutsche Grammophon) Krzysztof Penderecki – ‘Dimensions Of Time And Silence’ (Polskie Nagrania) Medeski Martin & Wood – ‘Pappy Check’ (Blue Note) Madlib – ‘Slim’s Return’ (Blue Note) Jimi Tenor & UMO – ‘Ghost Warrior’ (Herakles Records) H.P.   DEVS, a tv series on FX/Hulu, is easily one of the best things I've ever seen on tv. It's written, directed and produced by Alex Garland the man responsible for Ex Machina & Annihilation, two of my favorite films of the last ten years. The sound design and music in his films is always perfect. His musical collaborators are Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow and they are responsible for the music in DEVS as well. Garland lets scenes breathe, lets the music wash over you as the camera lingers. It's difficult to separate the original music from pre-existing music used in the series. No soundtrack has been released so this mix has none of the newly written score. But I was able to track down a few of the pre-existing tracks that were used. The most important of which is Jan Garbarek - Regnantem Sempiterna. It makes several appearances throughout the series. One of the other pieces I was happy to find is Fortunate Ones by The Beacon Sound Choir. I ended up using two other tracks from them because it fit the style of the show perfectly. I used several tracks from other soundtracks by Salisbury & Barrow and a few from the new Johann Johannsson album. I also used some favorite tracks from Cliff Martinez because of the steel drum sound he uses. Salisbury & Barrow used that same type of sound throughout their score. And anybody that has seen the series finale will know why I used Rachmaninov - Dues Meus. If you haven't seen the series I highly recommend it. And then, of course, listen to this mix. Leigh Whannell is a guy who likes to scare you. Back in 2004 he wrote and starred in Saw; it was a horror movie done on a budget, it'd go on to make millions, and it got Hollywood's attention. Pretty soon, Leigh and his mate James Wan were on a role; they'd make sequels and new horror films, and these two guys from Melbourne were all of a sudden the talk of the town. Fast forward to 2020, and Leigh is writing and directing his take on the classic HG Wells story, The Invisible Man. It's a modern twist on a classic; the focus is much more on the victim, played by Elisabeth Moss, than the villain… and it fits into that emerging genre of social horror where often real life is far more frightening than fantasy. We met Leigh way before all of this. Every Saturday morning, many of us would wake up early and watch Recovery; a TV show of ramshackle proportions, with live music, an even livelier host, and a 19 year old Leigh Whannell reviewing the latest blockbusters. That's the Leigh we met again, when he joined me to Take 5. After years on both sides of the camera, I asked this local boy made good to tell me about five “songs you can see”. Music has a way of completely changing a film's feel, and vice versa. In so many of the films we love, it's the sounds that cement those images in our brains. From Blade Runner to The Breakfast Club, this is a heartfelt and joyful ride through a film buff's brain.   I love the film, Arrival, so I should have thought of this myself. But a listener commented on my Blade Runner alternative mix that I should do an alternative mix for Arrival. Yes!   So here it is - An Alternative Arrival Soundtrack. I absolutely love Johann Johannsson's original soundtrack, probably one of my top two or three soundtracks of all time. So this mix is not attempting to make something that I think is better than his score. It's sort of a supplement to the original, a collection of tracks that fit with the style of the original.    All of the tunes are newer than the original soundtrack, which came out in 2016. All the tunes except On The Nature Of Daylight by Max Richter. That amazing track was used to open and close the film. Here I use it in an unusual way - it plays backward then forward at the end of the mix. The film messes with the concept of the passage of time and the Richter track bookends the film to bring events of the end back around to the beginning. So playing it backward then forward kind of does the same thing. And it's crazy how much the track still sounds the same while playing backward.   If you haven't seen the film, go see it. It is definitely one of my top three favorite films of all time. Here's a link to the Blade Runner alternative mix...   https://www.mixcloud.com/lowlight/alternative-blade-runner-2049-soundtrack/   Cheers!   PS - the tune @ 15:00 is from my son.   Johann Johannsson died on Friday, February 9, 2018.   Devastating.    I absolutely adored his compositions.   I am at a complete loss for what to say about his music. So rather than try I made this mix.   Because I cross post all these mixes over on Mixcloud I am not able to make a mix with nothing but Johannsson music. Mixcloud has a policy of only 4 tracks from a single artist per mix. So I used 4 Johannsson cuts, some of my favs, and music from other artists that I have always grouped together with Johann.   I hope you will listen to this mix and also go seek out Johannsson's awesome library of music that is keeping his memory alive in this world.       Johann Johannsson Complete on Spotify     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Johann Johannsson - The Sun's Gone Dim and The Sky's Turned Black 05:33    Henryk Gorecki - Symphony No. 3 Lento(exerpt) 08:30    Johann Johannsson - Flight from the City 14:35    Max Richter - On The Nature Of Daylight 20:43    Johann Johannsson - Kangaru 23:22    Craig Armstrong - Choral Ending 25:54    Just a Human - Johann 28:15    Olafur Arnalds - Öldurót 32:22    Clint Mansell - Together We Will Live Forever 37:05    Johann Johannsson - IBM 1403 Printer 44:05    Christopher Spelman - The Final Journey 51:27    Hildur Gudnadottir - Unveiled 54:48    Olafur Arnalds - Dalur 58:31    lowlight - Memories of JJ 62:07    end

Being a science fiction & electronic music geek, it's no surprise that I'm a big fan of the soundtrack for the original Blade Runner film.  When I heard that they'd tabbed Johann Johannsson to do the score for the 2049 film I was very excited.  But then he was pulled from the project & replaced with Hans Zimmer.  While I've actually liked a few of Zimmer's recent scores, I wasn't overly impressed with his music for 2049.  It wasn't that I disliked it.  I think I was just disappointed that it wasn't Johannsson.   My son, however, liked the soundtrack much more than I did.  So much in fact that he went home after seeing the film, created his own track in the 2049 style and sent it to me the next day.  I was impressed with the track and immediately made plans for a Blade Runner mix.   The music here is a collection of tunes that sounds like it fit perfectly in Blade Runner 2049.  In searching for music I was happy to have rediscovered Xerrox, Vol. 2 by Alva Noto, such a great album.  I was also excited to find music and artists I'd not heard before like Ital Tek, Floating Machine & Island People.   Here's a link to my son's track which appears in the mix as track #3 - "Blade Running" by just a human.   https://soundcloud.com/axxmusic/blade-running-master/s-recEt      Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Alva Noto - Xerrox Moonphaser 2 05:00    Ital Tek - Jenova 10:10    just a human - Blade Running(unreleased) 12:18    36 - Black Future 16:05    Ryuichi Sakamoto - life, life 20:00    Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross - The Same Dream 23:51    Floating Machine - Nowhere 30:40    Island People - vogelsang 35:25    Andreas Tilliander - Syncussion Discussion 40:10    Boards of Canada - Transmisiones Ferox 41:35    Arovane & Hior Chronik - Into My Own 45:35    Ryuichi Sakamoto - Fullmoon 47:30    Island People - from the sky 54:35    Alva Noto - Xerrox Moonphaser 1 61:40    end

I'm not sure where this mix originated.  It may have started with Johann Johannsson's Kangaru from the Arrival soundtrack, God knows I listened to that a ton over the last 6 months.  Maybe it was Max Richter.    Whatever it was I found myself collecting vocal tunes.  The kind of tracks that have vocals but many times no words or lyrics.  If there are words it's usually unintelligible or a language like Latin.  Once I gathered enough music then wa-lah here's an ethereal vocal mix.   Cheers!         T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Max Richter - Sketch for a Portrait #1(Morgan OST 2016) 01:06    Olafur Arnalds - Raddir(Island Songs 2016) 05:00    Ashera - Lullaby for Mother Earth(Ambient Selections 1997) 08:00    Tim Hecker - Utropics(An Imaginary Country 2009) 08:53    Jonsi & Alex - Boy 1904(Riceboy Sleeps 2009) 11:30    Jim Cole - Astral(Godspace 2002) 15:18    Jim Cole - The Way Beyond #10(The Way Beyond 2003) 17:30    Brian Eno - 2-1(Music for Airports 1978) 22:30    Melanie Pappenheim and Jocelyn Pook - Blow the Wind/Pie Jesu(Deluge 2009) 24:50    Max Richter - Path 5(Sleep 2016) 31:00    Johann Jphannsson - Odi Et Amo(Englaborn 2002) 33:50    Murcof & Vanessa Wagner - Farewell, O World, O Earth(Statea 2016) 41:00    Peter Gabriel - Dressing the Wound(Birdy 1985) 44:20    Alio Die & Amelia Cuni - Churning the Ocean(Apsaras 2001) 49:20    Johann Johannsson - Kangaru(Arrival 2016) 51:50    Jon Anderson - Bless This(Global Communication Remix)(The Deseo Remixes 1995) 57:44     Trio Mediaeval & Arve Henriksen - St. Birgitta Hymn(Rimur 2017) 61:48    Voces8 - Vasks: The Fruits Of Silence(Winter 2016) 66:30    end

The title of this mix pretty much says it all - this is a collection of excellent tracks from excellent science fiction films.     This isn't meant to be definitive as in "The Best SciFi Soundtracks of All Time!"  It's just some of my favorite music from some of my favorite sci fi films.  I purposely stayed away from stuff like Star Wars, Star Trek, Close Encounters and 2001.  Those are a little too recognizable and most of the time don't fit with the ambient feel of this mix.   I just had to start the mix with what may be my all time favorite sci fi soundtrack - Solaris by Cliff Martinez.  I like the movie pretty well but the soundtrack is what really made that film for me.  Another soundtrack that I absolutely had to include is Arrival from Johann Johannsson.  Easily my favorite film of last year and the soundtrack made me love it even more.  A lot of the music in this mix is fairly new, released within the last ten years or so.  The exception being the tracks from Blade Runner and Dune.   Are there any sci fi soundtracks that I should check out for further mixes?  Any favorite sci fi film music that you have?  Let me know in the comments.   Cheers!     T R A C K L I S T : 00:00    Cliff Martinez - First Sleep(Solaris) 02:42    Clint Mansell - Welcome to Lunar Industries(Moon) 06:00    Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow - The Turing Test(Ex Machina) 07:10    Harry Gregson-Williams - Watney's Alive(The Martian) 09:50    Jon Hopkins - Campfire(Monsters) 11:30    M83 - Starwaves(Oblivion) 14:38    Johann Johannsson - Arrival(Arrival) 17:00    Steven Price - Aningaaq(Gravity) 21:00    Vangelis - Fading Away(Blade Runner) 23:33    Toto - Paul Meets Chani(Dune) 26:25    Clint Mansell - First Snow(The Fountain) 29:17    Max Richter - Nocturne(Black Mirror) 31:05    Johann Johannsson - Kangaru(Arrival) 33:36    Underworld - Capa's Last Transmission(Sunshine) 35:27    Brian Eno - Prophecy Theme(Dune) 39:36    John Tavener - Mother & Child(Children of Men) 42:55    Hans Zimmer - Where We're Going(Intersteller) 45:41    Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow - Other Dreamers(Black Mirror) 46:31    Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein - Eleven(Stranger Things) 49:35    Arcade Fire - Morning Talk/Supersymmetry(Her) 53:15    Daft Punk - Solar Sailer(Tron 2) 55:40    Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow - Bunsen Burner(Ex Machina) 58:34    Ramin Djawadi - Exit Music(for a film)(Westworld) 62:58    end

Every year I make two lists of my favorites albums of the year.  One list is generally indie music and the other is ambient/instrumental.  Even though I have a difficult time deciding on the final group it is easier coming up with the indie list than it is for ambient.  Maybe it's because after a year of music they all tend to blur together and sound the same.  There are definitely some stand outs, like the two releases from Johann Johannsson this year.  But generally it's tough to make a list because there are a lot of quality recordings every year.   As hard as it is, it's still a lot of fun digging through a ton of releases to find my favorites and then out them together in a coherent mix.  The tracks don't appear in any particular order.  I just figured out what cuts sounded good together.  Not all the tracks from my best of list made into the mix because that's just the way mixes go sometimes.   Here's the list, I'd love to hear about your favorite albums of the year, tell me about them in the comments. Most regular visitors to this blog are aware that I also post these mixes over at Mixcloud.  I love Mixcloud.  I got in very early on and so have developed quite a few followers.  It's been fun watching it grow.   One thing that has helped in growing that following is being one of the featured cloudcasts in the Ambient/Chillout category.  Well, apparently now Low Light Mixes is also one of the featured cloudcasts in the Classical category.  Some of my mixes my have some classical related tunes but I definitely wouldn't characterize these mixes as "classical."  But, what the heck, I'll take the extra exposure. Being featured in the classical category was the genesis for this new mix, "things left unsaid."  It's an all classical mix.  Maybe it would be better to call it an orchestral mix because about half of the tracks are from film soundtracks, so not classical in the purest sense. Most of the music is fairly new.  The oldest cut being the Jonnie Greenwood piece from 2007.  There a few tracks from Caleb Burhans and David Lang that are from 2013 releases that didn't make it onto my year in review lists because I didn't find them until 2014.  I found them on someone else's best of list.  They are both excellent recordings.  And of course I had to include some Johann Johannsson because I pretty much like everything he does. I hope you enjoy this classical diversion. For such a small country, Iceland has produced a surprising number of excellent artists.  From Bjork to Mum to Seabear to Olaf Arnalds to Sigur Ros, it's really extraordinary the amount of wonderful music that comes from that island. This last mix of 2011 is an Icelandic journey.  All the music is created by artists from Iceland.  The brilliant idea for it came from loyal listener, Kevin.  I wasn't sure how much music of Iceland I had in my collection but I was surprised to find quite a bit. Icelandic music for me begins & ends with Sigur Ros & Bjork.  They are both in the mix, with Jonsi, from Sigur Ros, making multiple appearances.  In addition to the Sigur Ros tune, Jonsi contributes "Stokkseyri" from Riceboy Sleeps & "9" by Frakkur. When Kevin suggested the mix & the title, he was thinking of Iceland as a land of extremes...glaciers & volcanoes, 24hr days & 24hr nights.  This mix doesn't swing too wildly from one extreme to another.  It's more ice than fire.  A few of the tunes do build in typical post-rock fashion, but generally things are fairly subdued. I used two Johann Johannsson tracks fairly close together, which I normally don't like to do but the IBM track just seemed to fit perfectly with the preceding cut.  Plus I was just happy to be able to use that IBM track again because I LOVE it! The pic in this post is from a terrific blog called "Stuck in Customs." Check out the blog or go to his Flickr stream to see some amazing photos.  I'm a little tired of the HDR effect in photos but Tret Ratcliff does a really nice job with it & it definitely helps that he is shooting in unbelievable locations. This was a fun mix to put together & I'd like to thank Kevin for suggesting it, I'm very happy with how it turned out.
