Kenneth is in discussion with Ryan Bledsoe of Frothy Monkey - famed as an all-day cafe, wholesale bakery, and specialty coffee roaster – focusing this time on the importance of filters, the different kinds, and what they each brings to your cup of coffee. KEY TAKEAWAYS Paper filters do a better job of filtering, keeping sediment/fines and almost all fats out. Less fines in your coffee means less mouthfeel and possibly less body Paper filters can be used more than once Metal filters are traditionally made from aluminum or stainless steel, and are purpose built for repeated use. The sheen on top of the coffee from a metal filter is the fats. With more fats evident, it can be viewed as less healthy although Kenneth and Ryan challenge this thought. Unfiltered coffees taste more powerful – as in 'bolder'. The shape of the filter can make a difference. Waves or baffles can retain heat better. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's all about heat retention' 'Why do we prefer the white filters over the natural brown, unless it's for the taste? I can't tell the difference!' ‘There's a lot in coffee that we've had to weed out as bad practices' GUEST RESOURCES Frothy Monkey - https://frothymonkey.com/ @frothymonkey on social VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee: https://umblecoffee.com/ At Umble Coffee, we only roast specialty-grade arabica coffee from around the world with cupping scores 84 and above. Jamie joins the show today to tell his story. We talk about his late start to drinking, why he started drinking, and why it became a problem. A lot of people start drinking because its social and fun, only to realize it becomes a coping mechanism for the hardships they deal with on a daily basis in this industry. We break that down, and we talk about what he did about it once he realized that it wasn't working anymore. This was a fun conversation, that is very introspective, and real. I look forward to joining him at the Ben's Friends meetings on Mondays at 11am at the Oak Steakhouse. In this episode, Kenneth sits down with Daniel Lopez from Frothy Monkey. To talk about the two main coffee species and a third one that is showing great promise. They discuss the differences between the three. Including, how they grow, what they taste like, and how they are used. Daniel explains how coffee is tasted and graded. They also walk through why it is hard for farmers to switch from growing Robusta to producing specialty arabica coffees. As well as talk about how the industry is working to change the taste profile of Robusta and starting to experiment with the promising Stenophylla variety. KEY TAKEAWAYS There are different species of coffee plant. Within each species, there are many varieties. We drink mostly Arabica and Robusta, but there is a new species that is generating interest. Coffee is tasted and tested at several stages, which results in a cupping (quality) score. Coffea Canephora, also known as Robusta, is used for a lot of instants and first wave coffees. Arabica is harder to grow than Robusta. Robusta has double the caffeine levels of Arabica. But the taste is nowhere near as rich or appealing. Robusta can be grown better and is likely to become more widely used by fresh coffee makers. Persuading farmers to switch to Arabica is not easy. Why, is explained in the podcast. Stenophylla is a promising species. It has good taste, is drought-resistant, and is easier to grow. BEST MOMENTS ‘There are currently 131 species in the coffea genus. But Arabica and Robusta are what we mainly drink. ´ ‘Arabica producers are going for higher quality and higher trade costs.' ‘Robusta can likely be good...when grown in the right temperatures by the right producers.' 'Stenophylla can taste just as good as Arabica.' How much does it take for you to be really happy? I started on a journey of self-evaluation of my relationship to material possessions in 2016. I am still in the middle of that self-evaluation. I think the evaluation will be a continual life process. There were two key events in my life that started me down this path. In todays podcast I talk about those two key events and give an update where I am in 2021. My prayer for each of us, is that we will live life with shallow tent pegs and decide to be free, to think and live independently, and to soar above the masses, and follow our King Jesus as champions who live lives of excellence, both in this life and the life to come!As I was preparing the show notes today, I noticed that The Minimalists have a new documentary on Netflix, "The Minimalists: Less is Now." Well, friend, a really weird, unexplainable thing happened with this episode. The raw, unedited recording of this episode was uploaded initially. Fortunately, a regular listener made me aware of the debacle! The final recording and the rendered version for upload are missing from my computer. Really weird. Anyway, here is the RE-EDITED episode 92! If you made it through the rough cut, please listen again to the edited version-it will make more sense and be easier to follow! It's is clear, due to the fact that sexual immorality and idolatry is the key problem in 2 out of the seven churches-these two devastating destructive sins are perched at the doorsteps of us all. We all must hear what the Spirit is saying to the churches. We must guard our hearts in the areas of doctrine, relationships, and worship of God. To deviate into heresy can overwhelm us and ultimately result in paying the ultimate price for our sin and disobedience, by God striking us dead. In the letter to the pastor and church at Thyatira, Jesus calls out the false prophetess Jezebel and her adulterous partners in heretical teaching of supposed deeper things (which Christ highlights as doctrines from Satan) which by deceit lead the people into sexual immorality and idolatry. Jesus makes it very clear, that unless the people in bed with the adulterous and idolatrous false teacher repent, that their children will be killed dead. It is assumed here that the reference of the children has to do with those who are birthed into this heresy. The point is, to adhere to the spirit of Jezebel brings dire consequences to the child of God. The podcast finishes up with the evaporation of the thoughts into the core of the "so what" of this podcast. As you get to that portion at the end, you will notice a difference in recording quality. In an effort to capture the thoughts as they were bursting through my mind, I grabbed my IPhone and recorded. The background noise is a fan running in the background. May God bless you and encourage you as we discuss this difficult but very timely subject. Here are the four key take aways from today's podcast:Immorality & idolatry is not that far from each of us. It is one deceitful false teaching away. Each should take heed lest he fall.Cancel culture has been with us since the church began, and the leniency and excuses made by the church on behalf of the deadly false teacher and false spokesperson for God results in the ultimate punishment on earth, death, being executed by Jesus himself. Tolerance of the bold, arrogant, strong personality who is a perpetrator of Satan's carries with it the death penalty. The existence of a Jezebel is an intolerable situation and the consequences for the toleration are devastating. We are fearful to point fingers, yet there comes a time to speak and stand. Great blessing of true strength, power, and fellowship with Jesus are promised to the ones who stays pure, doesn't engage in the heresy, and does the hard thing now, and stays the course of right actions- the one who conquers and keeps Jesus's work.Repentance is possible. We must ring the bell of warning with boldness to guard our own hearts against deceit and decline and rescue others from the impending disaster.Revelation 2:18-29Wiki/JezebelJezebel - gotquestions.orgUS News Article on Jezebel example of the celebration and defense of one of the most wicked people in the Bible.Biblical Archaeology Article on Jezebel another example of a cultural realignment of JezebelBoth of these Bible dictionaries have a rather liberal view of Jezebel…Anchor Bible Dictionary and the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia…and we wonder why the church of Jesus Christ is in such moral failure and culturally absent today, while evil is bursting forth in almost every conceivable way in our nation and our world.(In the opening intro of this episode, Kenny mentions the Frothy Monkey Coffee House in beautiful downtown Franklin, Tennessee. Jesus takes personal offense at teachings in the church that lead the people to act contrary to his living, active word. He has zero tolerance of tolerance when it leads to sin and destruction. He is calling on you and I to step up to the plate and address the false teachings within out churches, before Jesus has to take action. He is ready to take swift action and war against people who cast stumbling blocks before the people, but his preferred course of correction is for us to act! To use a modern term, Self-pity and self-loathing are an attempt to HACK LOVE.In this episode, Kenny looks at the blackmailing of love and joy by the tragedy of a bitter, hateful, self-pitied person through the vehicle of C.S. Lewis's book, "The Great Divorce". As noted in Wikipedia, "The Great Divorce, is a novel by the British author C. S. Lewis, published in 1945, and based on a theological dream vision of his in which he reflects on the Christian conceptions of Heaven and Hell. The primary themes of The Great Divorce are moral choice and the absolute disunion of heaven and hell." Lewis's depiction of Frank and his treatment of his wife Sarah during their lives on earth seeks to highlight the manipulative, imprisoning, hateful, bitter, blackmailing attitude of self-pity and self-loathing, which seeks to destroy and desecrate the HEAVENLY GIFT OF JOYOUS PEACE THAT COMES WHEN SOMEONE HAS BEEN INFUSED WITH THE LOVE OF CHRIST. Kenny speaks strong words to those who identify with Frank, and words of relief to those who have had their love held hostage by such people. Coffee with Friends is meant to feel like you are sitting down with your closest friends on a fun coffee date - you know those dates that dive deep into how you really are and what you're learning. Today we sit down with one of my best friends, Sarah Anderson. We first met at a bible study where she sat next to me on the floor and the rest is history. Her radiant joy brings life to anyone she encounters. But she went through many difficult seasons to get to where she is today. We talk about the stages of heartbreak and how brokenness and depression doesn't define you, but propels you into a relationship with God - the one who does define you. She is raw and real with how she dealt with a season of depression after a devastating heartbreak. This conversation is far from depressing. It is full of life and truth. A conversation that can be tough to have, but one that is needed to grow. Sit down with us and Sarah's favorite local coffee shop coffee, Frothy Monkey, for a life-giving chat. @theWhitnessco @Sare_Anderson15 @FrothyMonkey

It defines what already is, what will be, what is that no longer will be, all with such certainty that there is no question about its advent, course of trajectory, or its completion/fulfillment. Correction-in the podcast I call this episode 89 but it is actually episode 88!This episode looks at the Church in Smyrna, Revelation 2:8-11. They are one of the churches doing things right-Jesus has nothing bad to say to them, instead tells them that, in spite of their present persecution and poverty, they are RICH. He gives them two important commandments that all of us should obey. You will find this episode super encouraging! We've got to hold on tight and run for the finish line because our victory is already guaranteed! Why these seven churches in Asia? - Bible Study Tools website(In the opening intro of this episode, Kenny mentions the Frothy Monkey Coffee House in beautiful downtown Franklin, Tennessee. The resurrected, glorified Jesus Christ is seen walking among the lamp stands with the seven stars in His right hand of power. The last verse in chapter one reveals that the seven stars are the seven messengers of the seven churches in Asia. The messengers are the pastors of those seven churches. Christ is physically showing that he holds His under shepherds in his mighty power. No one can snatch them from his hand. Consequently, he also has the power to remove their power and influence in the world. He is giving his evaluation of each and expects them to repent and obey his commands. Though we don't fully understand all that is implied by having the lamp stand removed, it obviously is severe chastisement that results in great loss for the pastor and the church he leads. This first point of evaluation of Jesus Christ's leader and church is a hard hitting, transparent, illumination of a sin that can be hidden under the mechanics of Christianity. As we obey Jesus and go back to the love we had at first, manifested by obedient works of service that show God's love in clear and tangible ways, “…the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in[c] the paradise of God.” Revelation 2:1-7https://www.gotquestions.org/Ephesus-in-the-Bible.html The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia is referenced regarding the background on Ephesus. The Hokey Pokey VideoThe Love Dossier- Romans 12:9-21Plain Revelation-Rebirth may not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about the book of Revelation, but in the final chapters we see the new heaven and the new earth coming down.Plain Revelation-simple, straight forward talks about how it all will end and begin again…a chapter by chapter look at the book of Revelation. This episode is additional thoughts regarding the last podcast that introduced the Revelation series by looking at chapter one. Through life events that came together between yesterday evening at the time of this writing and this morning, God emphasized some additional thoughts regarding chapter one and the book as a whole. Stay with me through my mental path and it will all make sense by the end of this podcast that is a little under fourteen minutes long. On April 18, 2014, HGTV announced it was planning to premier a home improvement reality television show called Flip It Forward in October 2014, featuring the identical twin brothers David and Jason Benham. By May 6, 2014, Right Wing Watch , a project of People For the American Way, published a report that labeled David Benham as an outspoken anti-gay, anti-abortion "extremist." The following day, May 7, 2014, HGTV issued an announcement via a tweet that it would not move forward with the brothers' series, thereby immediately canceling production in the middle of filming. Why such hatred for those whose ideology is different than your own? Why such lack of tolerance in the name of tolerance? In this episode Kenny answers that question. On Oct 31, 2020 Chad and Rachel went to Frothy Monkey (125 5th Ave S, Franklin, TN 37064). We got a drip coffee, a Sweet Harvest Latte, a Blueberry-Lemon Scone, and a Chocolate Toffee Muffin. Outstanding thought: Not their best. Had a rough day. Takeaway: Give it another shot. Their thing is atmosphere and branding. Our rating: Overall: 3; Atmosphere: 3; Food: 2.5; Coffee: 3.5.

We are wrapping up our Nashville series with where to eat in Nashville. We already talked about Where to Stay in Nashville and The Top Things to Do in Nashville. Now it’s time to talk about some of the amazing food options when in Nashville. If you haven’t eaten yet, this episode will make you hungry. We’ve been focusing on eating better and getting fit. Diane is on the keto diet and Chris is doing a keto/paleo version. To be honest, preparing for this show was a bit of a challenge to our diets. There are so many great things to do and see in Nashville and the food is no exception. We kick things off with some great spots in Downtown Nashville. We tell you about the super cool Acme Feed & Seed along with what we each like to order. We also tell you where to get amazing oysters and unbelievable milkshakes before moving on to our favorite spots in The Gulch. After that we tell you about Midtown hotspots, some classy West End options, our favorite spot in 12 South, Hillsboro Village, and Chris’s favorite pizza place in East Nashville. Warning: graphic food descriptions, please eat before listening to this episode. Show Notes: [04:15] Downtown Nashville is the hustling and bustling area where all of the honkytonks are located. [04:32] Acme Feed & Seed is a cool historic building with a honkytonk on the first floor with great food and drinks. There is also a great bar and food on the second floor which also has sushi. The third floor is an event center called The Hatchery. There is also a rooftop bar with great views of Broadway, the Cumberland River, Nissan Stadium, and Riverfront Park. [07:42] Get Ike & Mike Nachos on the second floor. [08:25] Chris would eat an acme burger with bear creek beef & cheddar cheese and hand-cut fries. Di would have he farm-raised catfish with hush puppies, hand cut fries, and slaw. [09:32] For dessert, try a southern hand pie with cinnamon ice cream and caramel sauce. [10:05] The Southern Steak & Oyster. They serve breakfast, lunch, brunch, and dinner. At brunch you can get pictures of mimosas. They also have great oysters. [11:54] Eat like Chris with the fried chicken, greens, and mac and cheese or a double-cut smoked pork chop. Di likes the shrimp and grits or seared sea scallops. [14:11] There is a special dessert place called Legendairy. It's a crazy over the top milkshake bar. They make things like Death by Chocolate which is Dutch chocolate and rocky road ice cream, chocolate icing rim, chocolate chips, whipped cream, chocolate fudge drizzle, chocolate sprinkles, and a fudge brownie on top. [17:06] Now we are moving into The Gulch. The Whiskey Kitchen has great cocktails with awesome names. They have an extensive whiskey menu and late night dinners. [18:34] Chris would eat dry wings (sweet & smoky bbq, togarashi, or ranch-spiced) to start and three little pigs brick oven pizza (sausage, pit ham, Gifford’s bacon, mozzarella, provolone). [19:33] Di would have the rocket salad (arugula, slicked strawberry, blue cheese crumble, toasted pecan, lemon herb vinaigrette) to start and low country pulled pork sandwich with chipotle mac & cheese. [20:27] Biscuit Love is world famous. They have three locations. They serve breakfast, lunch, and brunch. They started as a food truck and make everything from scratch. Try an east nasty chicken sandwich. [21:33] Chris would have the princess which is buttermilk biscuit, Nashville style spicy boneless hot chicken thigh, pickles, mustard, and honey. [22:15] Di would have Bonuts which are fried biscuit dough, tossed in sugar, topped with lemon mascarpone, served over blueberry compote or Hummingbird Family Reserve a drop biscuit filled with pineapples and banana jam, topped with cream cheese frosting and pecans. [23:28] Jackalope Brewing Co. The founders met while studying in Scotland. They have brews with cool names. Chris would have a Fennario IPA and Di would have Thunder Ann Pale Ale. [26:09] Midtown. The Patterson House is a speakeasy in a secret location. Governor Malcolm R. Patterson vetoed prohibition, but his veto was overridden by the state legislature. They have unique cocktails and delicious food. [29:48] Get some Nashville hot chicken at Hattie B's. [31:22] Chris would get the Damn Hot with southern greens. Di would get the Southern with no heat with either peach cobbler or banana pudding. [31:45] Warning: Shut the Cluck Up!! is HOT! [34:31] We love pizza, but only recommend places we go. DeSano has communal seating and traditional style pizza, calzones, cannolis, and you can even get slices. [36:03] The West End. The Americano is like a tapas bar. It's fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. [37:12] Saltine is a great seafood place, and they have oysters. Chris's favorite go-to dessert is chocolate cake. [38:34] 12 South has some cool places to eat. Bartaco is our go-to spot. They have street tacos. We always order the chips and salsas. [40:06] Chris orders the chicken and shrimp. Di loves the crispy rock shrimp, glazed pork belly, Baja fish, and when in season the crispy oyster tacos. [42:36] The Christie Cookie Co. is across the street. They have amazing cookies and brownies that are awesome. Take some home! [44:09] The Frothy Monkey serves breakfast through dinner, and they have great coffee and food options. [45:41] Hillsboro Village: Check out the Pancake Pantry. Get there before 9:00 am. There is a long line, but the pancakes are worth it. [47:31] Kay Bob's has Persian and Southern influenced healthy food. [48:26] When you make it to East Nashville hit up Five Points Pizza. This is Chris's favorite, and even though you can get just a slice, he suggests the whole pie. [50:25] The Pharmacy has 100% Tennessee raised burgers. They have great burgers, brats, and shakes. They make their own condiments and have a unique beer selection. [51:44] Time to wrap up and go eat. Campbell Station (Seth, Elaina, and Campbell) is a three-piece country band out of Nashville, but their sound is unlike any other country band you've heard. They're driven by unique guitar rhythms and instrumentation, powerful female vocals, and lyrics anyone can relate to. They came back to Chattanooga earlier this month for a show at Puckett's, and joined me for an episode before their show. Seth, Elaina, and Campbell talked to me about their beginnings in music, how they met and started playing together, what the Nashville music scene is really like, their new EP, and some fun upcoming shows. Thanks so much for listening, y'all! Follow Campbell Station on Facebook and Instagram, check out their website, and listen on them on Spotify. This episode was recorded at Frothy Monkey in Chattanooga, TN.

Gypsy Circus Cider Company founders and makers, Stephanie & Aaron Carson, are helping to put cider on the map in Tennessee. They have two facilities with one dedicated to barrel aging ciders and the main production site which is also the location for their Gypsy Circus Taproom. The cidery opened for business in April of 2016 and has produced over 16 ciders each with whimsical names that connect to the backdrop of their gypsy lifestyle (the couple like to travel) and to the circus life. Names like; Whilring Deverish - a coffee cider make with Nashville based Frothy Monkey coffee took home a gold from GLINTCAP in 2017 Shadow Puppet - a barrel aged wild cider garnered a silver medal at GLINTCAP The Carson's pay attention to detail not only with their ciders, but also their branding. Take a look at a can of their dry cider Raindancer and listen to Aaron talk about the hidden graphics that they put on the label. Part of the couple's success is that they are keenly aware of how the beverage market works. Aaron Carson is the author of East Tennessee Beer, the executive director for Superfly Fabulous Events, founder of Tri-Cities Craft Beer Week and Tennessee Championship of Beers. Aaron co-founded the Brewly Noted Beer Trail and started the Tri-Cities Pro Brewers Guild.
