Es preciso aclarar desde un principio el significado de las palabras Reforma y Reformado. La primera era de uso corriente a fines de la edad media. Significaba la purificación interior que cada fiel habría de operar en sí mismo para restaurar su vida cristiana, y sobre todo las transformaciones que se esperaban de la iglesia en cuanto a la piedad y santidad de su sacerdocio. Pero, a partir de Lutero, la palabra Reforma designó la renovación de la Iglesia empezada en 1517 fuera de Roma, o sea en contra de la misma. Así la entendemos aún nosotros en la actualidad. A pesar de haberse opuesto entre sí los protestantes, después de formula luterana de Concordia (1580), los herederos espirituales de Zuinglio y de Calvino se declararon Reformados para distinguirse mejor de los luteranos. los tratados de Westfalia consagraron esta denominación, que se ha conservado hasta hoy.

La exégesis es una tarea hermenéutica, es decir, tiene que ver con el arte de interpretar la palabra divina escrita. Es una acción que consiste en leer (función de un sujeto) el texto bíblico (el objeto estudiado) desde un contexto histórico concreto (el del objeto y el del sujeto).

La exégesis se ocupa del significado original de un texto. Se concentra en lo que el autor quería decir y lo que el texto significaba para el lector original. ¿Cuál es el significado original, o exegético, de Romanos 2:14 al 16? Comparar con Ezequiel 3:17 al 19 y Romanos 10:12 al 17. No hay dudas de que habrá personas en el cielo que nunca oyeron hablar del evangelio. “Entre los paganos, hay quienes adoran a Dios ignorantemente, quienes no han recibido jamás la luz por un instrumento humano, y sin embargo no perecerán. Aunque ignorantes de la ley escrita de Dios, oyeron su voz hablarles en la naturaleza e hicieron las cosas que la ley requería. Sus obras son evidencia de que el Espíritu de Dios tocó su corazón, y son reconocidos como hijos de Dios” (DTG 593). Dios, en algunas ocasiones, aparte de los mensajeros humanos, se extiende hacia las personas que están en tierras paganas y las salva. Sin embargo, se salvan porque el Espíritu Santo ha tocado sus corazones, y ellos han respondido adecuadamente, como lo demuestran sus obras. No se salvan sencillamente porque vivieron a la altura de sus conciencias; si así fuera, entonces se salvarían por guardar la ley, y el Nuevo Testamento claramente niega esa posibilidad (Rom. 3:28; Gál. 2:16). El problema, en Romanos 2:11 al 16, es la responsabilidad de los judíos y de los gentiles, no su salvación. El hecho de que Dios no hace acepción de personas (vers. 11) se ilustra con lo que Pablo dice en Romanos 2:12: “Todos los que han pecado sin conocer la ley, también perecerán sin la ley; y todos los que han pecado conociendo la ley, por la ley serán juzgados” (NVI). Los que están “sin conocer la ley” son los gentiles que no tienen la ley escrita que fue dada a los israelitas en el monte Sinaí. Sin embargo, ellos perecerán, no porque no tuvieron la ley escrita, sino porque son pecadores que han transgredido la ley “llevan escrito en el corazón lo que la ley exige, como lo atestigua su conciencia” (vers. 15, NVI). En el Juicio, los judíos y los gentiles serán juzgados y condenados por sus leyes respectivas: los judíos, por la ley escrita, y los gentiles por la ley “escrita en el corazón”. Entre los gentiles, la conciencia realiza la misma función que la ley escrita realiza entre los judíos. Las Escrituras dicen claramente que “no hay justo, ni aun uno” (Rom. 3:10). Esto significa que tanto judíos como gentiles son pecadores por igual, y todos son salvados de la misma manera, no por guardar alguna ley sino solo por la muerte de Jesús en la cruz. ¿Cuán confiable es la guía de tu conciencia? Seguir tu conciencia, ¿es siempre una garantía de que harás una decisión correcta? Justifica tu respuesta.
