Even a mildly curious glance at any of the millions of communities of migrant people the world over will yield something interesting. The Goans of India, are one such. They are a fun and likeable lot as far as most of us can tell. We know them by their state, Goa—a dream vacation destination for many—and their seeming love of life, which is synonymous with a state of bliss—they even have a word for that. And don't get me started on their feni. I fondly remember commencing my descent into bottles of Goa's finest but, for some reason, not what happened after. Those were my happy drinking days. I haven't touched a drop to drink for over 20 years now as I stew, in abstemious contemplation of my navel.Goans have been an adventurous people. Sea-faring and peripatetic, while they migrated to every continent, mainly in search of better livelihoods. All tales of migrant people always have some surprises.A Goan becoming an accountant in Muscat, Oman might not be much of a story. But how a musician, a Mr de Souza, came to be the bandleader of the Sultan's band in Zanzibar is a matter of lasting curiosity. My guest today is she who tells such tales. Selma Carvalho—a Goan who grew up in Dubai and now lives in London. By all evidence, not only is she the most visible chronicler of Goan migrants, but also the most compelling. Selma's record of this history is as entertaining as it is scholarly.I started by researching her for this podcast. Very quickly, I disappeared into its maw of her prose to its—I use her rather digestive word—centripetal location. After much non-fiction, her debut novel Sisterhood Of Swans is available everywhere. And now I am privileged to be the one of many to bring this witty and incisive scholar to you. Selma Carvalho.ABOUT SELMA CARVALHOCarvalho is a British-Asian writer whose work explores themes of migration, memory and belonging. She is the author of three non-fiction books documenting the Goan presence in colonial East Africa. She led the Oral Histories of British-Goans Project (2011-2014) funded by the UK Heritage Lottery Fund. Her short fiction, in English and in Portuguese translation, has been published in journals like Litro and Lighthouse and anthologies published by Comma Press and Kingston University Press. She is also the editor of two volumes of The Brave New World of Goan Writing & Art (2018 and 2020). Her work has been shortlisted for several literary prizes, notably the London Short Story Prize, the Dinesh Allirajah Prize and the New Asian Writing Prize. She is the winner of the Leicester Writes Prize 2018 and her collection of short stories was a finalist for the prestigious SI Leeds Literary Prize 2018. Sisterhood of Swans is her debut novel and was shortlisted for the Mslexia Novella Prize 2018 in the UK. This week, host Basant Kumar is joined by Newslaundry's Nidhi Suresh and Shivangi Saxena. Nidhi, who is reporting on the assembly election in Goa, talks about how Goans “vote for a personality, not a party”. Her report on women's issues covered how Goa has more women voters than men but their representation in politics is still a problem. “There are 301 candidates [across] all the parties,” she says, “and only 27 women candidates.”Shivangi, who is in Uttar Pradesh with Akanksha Kumar for the election, explains her report from Prayagraj. She talks about the state of unemployment, saying, “Students are so frustrated. Just saying we will roll out more government jobs or just bringing out application forms is no longer enough for them.”This, and a lot more as they talk about what made news, what didn't, and what shouldn't have.Tune in.RecommendationsNidhiWritten on the BodyAssembly Elections 2022ShivangiSeeing Like a FeministBasantMathura के Vikas Nagar में लोग तलाश रहे 'विकास' l UP Elections 2022Produced and recorded by Tehreem Roshan, edited by Samrendra K Dash. Goa Inquisition is a sad reality of our past. Untold atrocities were inflicted on Goans to force them to convert, and ultimately barely 20,000 out of a total population of 250,000. An Inquisition was established. There has been a long pending demand for the Pope to apologise to the Goans for its role in that Inquisition. Now that he plans to visit India, let us build that demand into a crescendo, so that he apologises to Indians the same way he apologised to the Americas and to Rwanda.
India have done fairly well till now w.r.t to medals but could have done even better if some of the favorites had won their events, But we are trending upwards. Greatest news is with our men's and women's hockey teams reaching the semis and Men's team finally winning a medal after 41yrs. But many sports in the Olympics are American/European like sailing, skateboarding, canoeing etc where Indians don't have any presence. So that makes me wonder if we can have some India specific sports like Kabaddi or Carrom to the Olympics. These are an expanding sports with World cups etc. held and many countries now participating. So why not? From Goans perspective why not add road riding/driving as an exhibition sport. In Panaji, the administration have been good enough to give us some challenging roads with potholes ridden all over, roads with cracks, difficult to see speed-breakers, which have made us Panjikars and definitely Goans expert riders. We can surely teach the world who would be shocked at our skill level, hand-eye-leg-heart coordination. Bring on the next Olympics, lets add these sports there. #Olympics #TokyoOlympics #Goa #Konkani #Kabaddi #Carrom #RoadRiding #potholes Let us know your thoughts on konkanifundays@gmail.com. Its still 9months to go for the assembly elections in Goa, but AAP and Kejriwal have already started preparations. And with that they have started in some cases childing politics. That's fine all do and probably learn, but this AAP team will need more time. Kejriwal made a mistake in thinking what worked for him in Delhi will work in Goa by declaring free electricity till 300 units if they come to power. From where will he give it free. Plus poverty is not as much an issues in Goa as it is in Delhi that some free sops will sway the votes in your direction. Secondly the other mistake he made is to show his support for the taxi union. This is a childish ploy to see if he can get mileage for the ongoing tussle between the taxi union with the govt. But he doesn't realize that the Goan public is with the govt on this issue. For long Goans have been taken for a ride by these taxi-walas at exorbitant prices. The govt move to enforce taxi meters will not only help tourists but also general public. There are multiple poster put around many places proclaiming Goa loves Kejriwal. This is a funny way to show love to Kejriwal by Goans by not ensuring a single seat to be won by AAP. May this love continue. Listen in to the entire episode and let me know your thoughts. Are we seeing a 2nd surge of corona related cases in goa? Are we relaxed now and dropped our guard? What can we do to control it? These questions need to be asked by all Goans to themselves first. Self introspection is required before pointing fingers at others. Although enforcement of SOPs is still an issue I feel which government agencies can do a better job of.
Goans are up in arms against the government's plans to turn the state into a coal hub. The infra push may destroy the Bhagwan Mahaveer National Park, damage the state's waterways, impact fishermen's livelihoods, and displace several local families.
Goans say it will destroy forests, fishing, local communities and their way of life.

Nowadays, people can not only be identified by what they wear but also by what they eat! At least that's what BJP leader Kailash Vijayvargiya says. Poha, a wonderful, simple dish poha which all of India loves, and perhaps Bangladesh does too, is at the centre of an unsavoury controversy. The most interesting fact is this – in Indore, where Kailash Vijayvargiya was born, poha is loved by Indoris! It is a favourite snack there. Another set of people hugely puzzled by Vijayvargiya's claim are Maharashtrians! Maharashtrians have poha every morning. School kids, office going people, everyone. There is also an excellently researched article by Kaushik Das Gupta in The Indian Express about how variations of poha are popular in so many other parts of India. Poha in Odisha is made from a smaller grain of rice. Odiyas use more of carrot and ginger in their poha as against the onion, peanut, masala-driven poha of Indore and Mumbai. Bengali poha is called chire'r pulao, and to this, they often add raisins. Goans cook poha with milk, sugar and cardamom to make doodanche fov – a sweet dish during Diwali. I believe that Kailash Vijayvargiya's poha anecdote is not an accidental or stray comment. It is part of a continuous attempt in creating a sense of 'us' and 'them' in this country: that guy there eating poha is a Bangladeshi, that makes him different from 'us' roti-eating ‘shudh bharatwaasis'. Our literature is not as diverse as our streets, schools, playgrounds and offices. --- "I grew up in India and now I have Australian citizenship; and I feel like I'm Indian and Australian, I don't feel like I have to choose. I feel I am a migrant, but I also feel at home here." Roanna Gonsalves is the author of The Permanent Resident, a collection of short stories about the migrant experience in Australia - from a specific point of view. Her characters, like herself, are all women from a Goan Catholic background. "For a lot of Goan Catholics, the faith is something to hold onto in a world where race and class are an oppression. The church becomes a centre for finding worth. So a lot of Goans will join the choir in the local church – my dad sings at the Cathedral choir here – join St Vincent de Paul, go and help out in any way they can … so, that idea of giving back." In this episode, Gonsalves unpacks the complexities of this Goan Catholic identity, and how it has shaped her life and work. "We don't hear as many stories about the diversity of Australian life as we should. Our literature, our arts, are not as diverse as our streets and our schools and our playgrounds and our offices." --- Roanna Gonsalves appeared at the 2017 Sydney Writers' Festival. BlazinRy host Ryan Holmes welcomes singer/songwriter Daniel Levi Goans and rocker Charity Chapman.
Teea Goans is not your typical new country artist. Her love of classic country is reflected in her song choice on her debut disc. She’s not as into the radio-friendly hits of today as she is the more traditional hits of yesteryear. Her love of country music took her deep into the archives to find the songs that best fit her for her first project. You’ll find songs written by legends such as Ernest Tubb, Bill Anderson, Hank Cochran, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard on her debut album. We had a chance to sit down with Teea to talk about her unusual journey into the business. NSAI is a wonderful resource for all songwriters. This week we sit down with Roxy Dean as she tells us why it’s so important to open your mind to new ideas.
