This episode takes us on an epic journey as we dive into the grand scale of cinematic giants and feature a review of the thought-provoking Godzilla Minus One, followed by a nostalgic trip through the Godzilla Animation series from 1978.Top 5 Giants in Film and Animation:Godzilla from various films: This iconic behemoth symbolizes both destruction and misunderstood nature, captivating audiences worldwide with its sheer scale and deep narrative resonance.King Kong from "King Kong" (1933): A tragic figure that blends horror with poignancy, illustrating complex interactions between humanity and the wild. The Iron Giant from "The Iron Giant" (1999): This metal titan touches hearts with themes of identity and sacrifice, showcasing the softer side of what giants can represent. The BFG from "The BFG" (2016): Spielberg's adaptation of Dahl's giant brings magic and kindness to the forefront, enchanting viewers with dreams and adventures.Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from "Ghostbusters" (1984): Mixing humor and terror, this giant marshmallow man offers a lighter, yet chaotic twist on the giant trope.Main Feature: Godzilla Minus One The 2023 Japanese epic Godzilla Minus One, directed and visually crafted by Takashi Yamazaki, marks a significant entry in the Godzilla franchise. Set in postwar Japan, it tells the harrowing tale of a former kamikaze pilot, portrayed by Ryunosuke Kamiki, who grapples with PTSD in a country scarred by war and haunted by the monstrous deity Godzilla. This film, premiering to commemorate the franchise's 70th anniversary, has not only redefined the kaiju genre but has also been lauded for revitalizing the narrative depth and cinematic quality of Godzilla stories. The film intricately explores themes of trauma, redemption, and the colossal impact of war, both on the environment and the human psyche. It's a poignant reflection on Japan's historical context and its cinematic representation of national traumas and resilience.Switching gears, we revisit the delightful 1978 Godzilla Animation series. This series introduced Godzilla to children as a hero rather than a destroyer. It presents a series of adventures where Godzilla, alongside a crew of human characters, tackles various monsters and villains, imparting lessons of courage and friendship. Its creative approach to making Godzilla a protector rather than a threat has endeared it to generations of viewers, showcasing the adaptability of the Godzilla mythos across different audiences and age groups.Today's episode invites us to reflect on the colossal impact of giants in film — not just on the physical landscapes they roam but on the emotional and cultural narratives they inhabit. Whether it's through the lens of a nostalgic animation or a critically acclaimed film, giants continue to fascinate and provoke thought, towering over the world of cinema both literally and metaphorically. Join us as we navigate through these monumental tales that continue to shape and challenge the boundaries of storytelling.

On today's episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner, I'm sitting down with comics writer Zoe Tunnell to hear all about her new one shot coming out on February 7th from IDW, the Godzilla Valentine's Day Special. To the best of my knowledge, we've never done a Valentine's Day feature here on the podcast so this was an excellent way to break it in with a tightly written little sapphic romance featuring the granddaddy of all kaiju. I almost said everyone's favorite but I know that can't be true cause mine is Godzooky (don't hate me.) We also dive into Zoe's other major current project, Blade Maidens, which she is a co-creator on with artist Valentine Smith. It's a great sapphic (are you picking up on a theme?) sword and sorcery webcomics romance, currently available on the Blade Maidens website which was recently picked up by Dark Horse Comics. This is the history part of our All Monsters Attack episode with Nick Milanes and Lani Harms (They Thought I Was You podcast). In this one, we're talking more about the life of director Ishiro Honda and we're tracing the evolution of the Kaiju film genre up through All Monsters Attack. Obviously the genre peaked with Hanna Barbera's classic 1978 cartoon Godzilla that introduced us to Godzooky, Godzilla's nephew. Here's a fun trivia fact about Godzooky from Gojipedia: "Many fans wonder if, since Godzilla is supposedly Godzooky's uncle, then Godzilla may have a brother and/or sister, although the show never says anything about him having one. It is more likely, however, that the term "nephew" is used figuratively, with no actual blood relation between the monsters."Wow. Hello, kaiju lovers! “FRONKENSTEEN! Nathan is joined by Travis Alexander, co-host of Kaiju Weekly and the biggest Baragon fan we know (#Justice4Baragon), to discuss this wild if uneven Toho classic directed by Ishiro Honda. We discuss the film's relation to the hibakusha, the discriminated survivors of the atomic bombings, because Frankenstein's plight in the film mirrors their real-life struggles. Also, Travis gets to meet Godzilla's bumbling nephew, Godzooky (he's practically Travis's spirit animal), who helps Jimmy From NASA in the producer booth because he's still reeling from his beatdown at the hands of Daimajin. Episode 65 checks in with your kind hosts after a snowy break. Jolyon kicked off the New Year with Bruce Lee, while Richard watched Citizen Kane, which is the Citizen Kane of movies. Will hung out with Turkish soap operas, as you might expect. He’s the same guy who wants to edit the shark out of Jaws 2. Then, the episode takes you across time and space, traveling to Monster Island in 1967. You know who else is traveling there? Godzilla, that’s who! He’s been telepathically summoned by his as-yet unhatched son(?) called Minya. Or Minilla. But not Godzooky. THAT was Godzilla’s nephew and was only in cartoons. You know, like Scrappy Doo! Anyhoo, Godzilla teaches that little smoke ring puffing lizard to breathe fire in the same way John Wayne teaches kids to swim. This is an important life lesson when you soon have giant insects to fight! The people in Godzilla movies may be less surprised to see Godzilla than Richard is to see a cardinal, but they usually have scientists around to explain things. Still, no one could explain the crate full of missing monster suits back in the 50’s! Even though this entry into the pantheon of Godzilla movies is more light-hearted than previous ones, it still took three different Godzilla suits and a lot of puppeteers to pull it off, so respect! Newcomers to films about the big guy be warned- he only gets cuter after this one! And though a cute Godzilla is easier to find than a Nirvana/Blue Oyster Cult mashup, stay with the episode past sign-off for a little treat! Oh, and... Happiness to you, Sentimental Boy! Why would Godzilla give a device that summons him to a bunch of ungrateful jerks on a boat? Who is Godzooky and does he have anything to do with Godzilla’s distant cousin Vapezilla? Nothing about this makes sense! John Hurst is 30 stories high and chooses the 1978 animated Godzilla theme song as our video… Read more Episode 17 – Godzilla Theme Song

In this latest episode of SMDG, we continue paying homage to upcoming films (we are addicted to homage!) as we subject ourselves to the cartoon version of Godzilla, co-produced by Tim's beloved Hanna-Barbera. The only bright spot is that the show might have helped to curb our aforementioned homage addiction. In other words, Godzilla could possibly be cartoon methadone. Of course, fear not; we move far beyond the potential palliative effects of Godzilla. Indeed, we address the rumors that Giancarlo may or may not be a phantom of Tim, Sean and Andrea's collective imaginations. Tim and Sean also surprise themselves with the depth of their knowledge regarding the original Godzilla. Not surprisingly, Andrea had even less knowledge than we previously assumed. And, once again, we're forced to lower the bar we set for her (it's now buried underground). Oh, and we cover the glory that is the animated mustache.   By this point of the synopsis, you're probably wondering how the episode could get any better. After all, can you out-gold gold? This was a trick question; you cannot.  However, you can certainly increase your gold supply. And our booking agent Mort Fisherman came straight from the (gold) mines with this week's interview. Indeed, we had the privilege of talking with Godzooky, Godzilla's nephew and a prominent cast member of the show. Join us as we learn how Godzooky segued from Hollywood to a Toyota dealership in Trenton, NJ.

Pigs become CEOs, and Tag Team sings about them. Yes, Isreal and Palestine are not friends. Lance and Adam argue about pointless things. Godzilla smuggles drugs into Turkey. The Kessler's diamond guy is a huge douchebag.  Kessler's may or may not have the bloodiest of diamonds.  Rubber is apparently the best movie ever made, and Jon can barely wrap hismind around the subject.  Lance brings news from Canada, and the crew talks about their desert island shows. Lance and Adam talk way too much about Star Trek minuatae, and Jon about whips a shitty on the podcast. Lance uncovers who really caused the challenger disaster. www.partyplatypus.com bitecast@gmail.com
