By the early 17th century, European sailors were being guided through southern seas by several birds – not on the wing, but in the stars. Five southern constellations were named for birds: the peacock, toucan, crane, and bird of paradise, plus a mythological bird that’s well known to Harry Potter fans: the phoenix. All of these constellations were outlined by Johannes Bayer in a star atlas published in the early 1600s. Those parts of the sky were unknown to Europe until explorers began heading southward. They mapped the stars and brought their observations back to Europe. A Dutch astronomer connected the stellar dots to create a dozen constellations, which Bayer depicted in his atlas. Most of the birds are so far south that they’re impossible for most American skywatchers to see. But one of them strides low across the south on October evenings: Grus, the crane. If you’re south of about Denver, look for the crane strolling along the horizon in early evening, with its neck extending low into the sky. The star that marks the crane’s head is visible from most of the country. It stands due south about 10 o’clock, almost directly below the gibbous Moon. The farther south you are, the higher the star appears. Known as Gamma Gruis, the star is much bigger, brighter, and heavier than the Sun. It shines at us across more than 200 light-years of space – the bright eye of a beautiful southern bird. Script by Damond Benningfield

She was disciplined for "discrediting conduct" and is currently having her hearing. Corruption abounds.  Also an update on the Coutts 4.

Astronomers usually look for things to get bright. But this month, they're looking for a black hole in a distant galaxy to get dark — the result of a break in the black hole's dinner. The black hole is about 50 million times the mass of the Sun. It's getting a little heavier by eating a nearby star. And it appears to refill its plate every 3.3 years. That situation is rare. Astronomers do see black holes ripping stars apart. But in almost every case, it's a one-time feast — the black hole completely destroys the star. But in the case of AT 2018ftk, astronomers have seen a couple of outbursts. A recent study says the star survived the first pass, and is making repeated encounters, losing some of its gas each time. The star probably had a close companion. They were ripped away from each other by the black hole's gravity. The companion star was kicked away fast enough to escape the galaxy. The other star swung into a lopsided orbit around the black hole. Each pass pulls away more of the star's gas, which spirals into the black hole. The gas gets extremely hot, so it emits X-rays. It stays bright for about half of the star's orbit, then goes dark, which should happen this month — a disruption in the black hole's dinner. AT 2018ftk is in Grus, the crane. For skywatchers in the southern half of the U.S., the constellation stands quite low in the south in the wee hours of the morning.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

Before the political situation in the federal state of Saxony changed so much that one has to deny any connection to it, I felt kind of a certain connection to many areas around the city of Leipzig. As with any naturalist, my fieldrecording year was determined by the life cycle of nature. The Red Deer Cervus elaphus rut is one of the classic motifs of wildlife sound recording and was therefore part of my fixed annual schedule – recorded here in my favourite area, the so-called Wildenhainer Bruch, north of Leipzig.

Fish are always trying to fend off other creatures, from other fish to birds to people. That applies to fish that are in the stars as well. In fact, the southern fish, Piscis Austrinus, has been nibbled at several times over the centuries. The constellation was established in ancient Babylon. Later, it was adopted by the Greeks, who tweaked its mythology. They said that a goddess either fell or threw herself into a river. She was rescued by a fish, which was placed in the heavens as a reward. The original constellation was a stick-figure outline anchored by Fomalhaut, the fish's only bright star. Later, astronomers began shifting things around. The star that originally represented the fish's tail, for example, became the head of the new constellation Grus, the crane. Some stars that one astronomer assigned to the fish were later moved by other astronomers. They became part of a constellation that honored the microscope. Today, the constellation has precisely defined borders. That keeps other constellations from poaching its faint stars. Piscis Austrinus scoots quite low across the south on October and November evenings. Look for Fomalhaut — a name that means “the fish's mouth.” Not only is it the brightest star in the constellation, it's the brightest star in that whole region of the sky, so you can't miss it. In 2010, gamma ray observations by NASA's Fermi Space Telescope revealed an unknown mysterious structure of our home galaxy Milky Way. Astronomers discovered two giant bubbles that emerge below and above the center of our galaxy. They are known as Fermi Bubbles. Each bubble is about 25000 light years long, spanning a total length of about 50,000 light years. When I was a boy vultures were called buzzards. It's an interesting common name that came across the ocean with early British colonists who had no vultures in their home country, but where hawks were called buzzards. “These large birds soaring over Jamestown must be a type of buzzard,” the colonist said. Our vultures are in the family Cathartidae and we have 3 in Arizona; the turkey vulture, the black vulture and the California condor. Cool! And yes, turkey vultures will vomit when distressed or disturbed and yes they do urinate/defecate (your choice!) onto their legs when they get hot. It's a form of evaporative cooling called urohidrosis. Kids, do not try this at home! Below is a poster for the Bisbee, Arizona celebration. See you there? Sandhill cranes have been wintering over in the Sulfur Springs valley since the mid 1960s. The expansion of irrigated agricultural fields and the availability of shallow waters for roosting ( Willcox Playa) were the draw for this ancient migratory bird. Now a days there are a few spots to see them: the Willcox Playa, Whitewater Draw and…I'm not making this up… the Willcox golf course.
