This is the fourth annual report and haunters revealed some surprising insights for the coming season! Marketing efforts got more sophisticated and more robust this year, with haunters using digital and offline platforms to promote their attractions. Crowd sizes are growing modestly, but haunts remain an affordable activity compared with rising costs for other entertainment. And Haunters are using new strategies to manage the crowds on busy nights. In this podcast, you'll find insights like: how small or large is the average haunted attraction these days? How much are they charging for admission? Which social media apps are most popular? What are the biggest challenges haunt owners face? Thank you to all of you who responded to the 2024 survey! Ladies & Gentleman, Boils & Ghouls, Welcome To The Season 3 Premiere of The Terror Talks!! We are so excited to be back and better than ever with an ALL-NEW and BIGGER Season than before, beginning with our ALL-NEW Haunt Review & Experience Team, The Boo Crew, which consists of a 6 Haunt Actors with varying levels of experience and expertise in the Haunt Industry!!  We are so pleased to be able to bring some new perspectives to the show, and continue what we love doing by visiting some great haunts, and some not-so-great haunts, but this time with a group that is not just haunt friends, but a group that is a Haunt Family.  On Season 3, Episode 1 of The Terror Talks, we are kicking things off by visiting a haunt that is near and dear to the hearts of everyone on the team, Deceased Farm, located in Lexington, SC.  On February 10th, our Terror Talks: Boo Crew visited Deceased Farms for their "My Deceased Valentine" event, which would run for 5 Nights in February, the 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th, and 19th.  Armed with some new characters and new scenes, Deceased Farms would present a unique Valentine's Themed haunt that would be sure to make your significant other leap right into your arms for protection.  This year we are bringing back our Scream Scale, which we will be using for ALL HAUNTS that we will visit this season, but this year, with some new categories to consider. With this, we will evaluate each haunt's Midway, Sets, Costumes/Makeup, SFX, Scares, Pacing, and Actors/Staff on a scale of 1-5 Screams. The average number of screams will determine our ranking for the haunts!! With all of these things in mind, we're not wasting any time, and are jumping right into, Deceased Farms: My Deceased Valentine, on Season 3, Episode 1 of The Terror Talks!!  Want to participate at home? There are many classes...all included in the ticket price.   Save money by going with friends. If you team up, a few people can split the cost of a hotel room. HAuNTcon offers many cool products for your Haunted Attraction, Home Haunt, or your Halloween lifestyle. But be aware of other people waiting to chat with the vendors too. Ask your questions and move on to the next booth. Come back when they're not as busy (usually early morning or right before close).   Pace yourself. HAuNTcon + New Orleans can be lots of fun! But you need to survive the weekend and get the most out of your stay. Try to get enough sleep so you have the brainpower to retain your seminars, stay hydrated to keep you going, and enjoy the cajun cuisine...carefully.   Stick to your gameplan. Know roughly where you want to focus on before you go. What costumes, equipment, and props do you need? What do you need to learn for the next Haunt season? What is your budget for 2020?   Enjoy your stay. New Orleans is a very historical city. A Chamber of Commerce is a network of business owners whose goal is to further the interests of businesses and grow stronger together. It serves as a spokesman and representative of the industry.   This is where The Chamber of Haunters comes in.   Imagine a Chamber of Commerce that stands to represent you as a Haunter, a Haunted Attraction Owner, and your interests within the Haunt Industry. This is the mission that the Founder, Robert Nulton, wants The Chamber of Commerce to become. A place for a helpful community, a resource for Haunters, and a representative for the entire Haunted Attraction Industry.   Yes. There are great Haunt Associations that already exist. The biggest one around is the Haunted Attraction Association, which for a membership fee you can join an existing community of Haunters and tap into the benefits of this association.   However, The Chamber of Haunters will be a bit different. Think of your local Chamber of Commerce with local and long-distant benefits. Unique events tailored for attractions who want to be part of a growing community. Guidance for haunt businesses that need more information on starting and growing a safe haunted attraction. And ways to keep your business doors open every year.   All wrapped up in a Chamber of Commerce type of atmosphere. Supplying the help you need and representing you along the way.   Here are a few things you'll learn in this podcast:   How to make your Haunted Attraction stand out and be the best that it can be. The advantages of being a member of an association and community for your Haunt related needs. How you can help by supporting the Chamber of Haunters by being an Advisor for your Region.   Listen to this podcast episode here.

ast week's episode was something of a downer. Luckily, this week we get to be a bit more optimistic as we talk about all of the signs that show the haunt industry's future is looking bright. Admittedly, this episode was a bit more difficult to research than I had planned but there are some very clear signs that the haunt industry, in spite of its challenges, is doing well and will likely still be doing well in the future. What are those signs? Well, here's a few just to get us started... This Week's Episode Includes: Intro Conference Reminders Thank You for Being Awesome International Expansion Haunts as Promotions Safety Record Growth of Halloween and Horror Improving Racial Demographics Growing Desire for "Real" Experiences More Haunts Than Ever Year to Year Growth Conclusions All in all, this is an episode you do NOT want to miss, especially if you got a bit bummed by the last one...

Depending on how you look at it, the haunt industry is either set to rocket to the moon or it's doomed to crash and burn. As small business people, we think a lot about the future of the haunt industry and have talked a great deal about it on the podcast over the past three years. The truth is, whether you're a doomsayer or a terminal optimist, you can find a lot of data to support your view. So, over these next two episodes, we're going to do just that and we're going to start by putting on our doomsayer hat. So get ready for a bumpy ride! Haunting is hard. It's hard work, it's a hard business and it's hard creatively.  Because of that, we sometimes turn to crutches and lean on things that, maybe, are more out of laziness and lack of ideas than what is actually best. So, in this episode we're taking a look at just some of those crutches, the things we lean on when we're out of ideas but need to fill a room (or 20).  This Week's Episode Includes: Introduction RenFest Story Conference Reminders Chainsaws Strobe Lights Fog Drop Panels Technology Common Sayings Haunt Marketing Conclusions To be clear, these aren't bad scares, but they are getting overused and are signs that maybe, just maybe, we're taking the easy way out... Go behind-the-scenes and on the road with Distortions Unlimited, the Colorado-based “haunt industry” animatronic and prop-making company run by Ed & Marsha Edmunds on Travel Channel's MAKING MONSTERS, Sundays at 8pE/P and 9pE/P Each hour-long episode follows the Edmunds and their staff – including renowned Hollywood creature and mask maker Jordu Schell – as they build some of the scariest frightronics and props in the world. Season three highlights include a new set of KISS animatronic band members for Las Vegas' KISS Monster Mini Golf; a giant zombie head & arms podium for Adobe Senior Creative Director Russell Brown in Denver, CO; and a mutilating buzz-saw blade attraction for Atlanta's NetherWorld; a terrifying pregnant zombie in St. Louis. Edmunds' fascination with sci-fi flicks and television began as a teenager while living in rural Illinois. He studied Art Education at the University of Northern Colorado. Edmunds used his artistic abilities to make and sell high-quality masks, which eventually led to the creation of his company, Distortions Unlimited. Marsha Taub-Edmunds began working for Ed Edmunds in 1981 - she became intrigued by the creations and took it upon herself to learn the business inside and out. Marsha and Ed connected through their shared artistic passion and wed in 1992; they have been running Distortions Unlimited as a team ever since.
