What an incredible story! We had the chance to chat with Hayley Arceneaux, the author of the new children's book "Astronaut Hayley's Brave Adventure." Hayley's journey is truly inspiring - from overcoming childhood cancer to becoming an actual astronaut! Hayley shared how she was diagnosed with bone cancer at just 10 years old. But with the amazing care she received at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she was able to beat the disease and even went on to work at the hospital as a physician associate, helping other kids with cancer. But Hayley's story took an even more incredible turn when she was unexpectedly invited to join the first all-civilian mission to orbit the Earth with SpaceX. After months of intense training, Hayley spent 3 days in space, an experience she describes as "life-changing." Now she's sharing that experience with kids through her new picture book. We also spoke with Michelle Person, the creator of the "Meanwhile in Africa" social studies curriculum. Michelle is on a mission to make history education more inclusive and accurate, highlighting the amazing accomplishments and perspectives of Africans and the African diaspora. Rather than just focusing on the negatives like slavery and famine, "Meanwhile in Africa" celebrates the rich history, culture, and innovations that have come from the continent. Michelle wants kids to associate Africa with "glory, prominence, and pride" rather than outdated stereotypes. It was so inspiring to hear about these two incredible initiatives that are empowering the next generation in different ways. Whether it's Hayley's personal story of overcoming adversity or Michelle's efforts to rewrite the narrative around Africa, these are the kinds of uplifting, eye-opening conversations we need more of. This week, I'm sitting down with someone who has completely blown my mind — Hayley Arceneaux. You might know her as the youngest American to ever go to space and the first astronaut with a prosthetic limb. But what you may not know is that Hayley's journey started as a childhood cancer patient at St. Jude, and today, she's a physician assistant at the very same hospital that saved her life. We talk about everything from how Hayley processed the life-changing call inviting her to join SpaceX's Inspiration4 mission, to what it was like going to space and coming back to Earth, and how she conquered her fears along the way. If you're looking for inspiration to dream bigger or just want to know what it's really like to be an astronaut, this episode is going to stick with you. Childhood cancer survivor Hayley Arceneaux and three other American civilians went to space in 2021. They travelled in a mission called Inspiration4 for the private company SpaceX. The four-member crew made history as the first all-civilian team to orbit Earth. But they also provided the most detailed data ever on the effects of space travel on the human body. New research based on this data details changes in the brain, heart, muscles, kidneys, skin, immune system and stress levels. The research also provides information on the activity of cell structures called mitochondria in zero-gravity, increased radiation, and other changes experienced in space travel. More than 95 percent of the health changes, or biomarkers, returned to normal levels in the months after the crew returned to Earth. But some abnormalities, including in the mitochondria continued, the researchers said. But the data suggested that spaceflights - at least short-term trips – are not big health risks. We did not see anything that was worrisome, thankfully," said Chris Mason. He is a professor of physiology and biophysics at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York who helped lead the research. The studies were published Tuesday in Nature and other journals.“幸运的是,我们没有发现任何令人担忧的事情,”克里斯·梅森说。 Mason added that there was evidence of brain stress during the mission, which has also been found in previous studies. Mason said this might be explained by findings in experimental mice flown to space. The mice experienced disruptions in the blood-brain barrier, a layer of cells protecting the brain. Brain function was not affected, Mason noted. Arceneaux is a doctor's assistant at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, and the mission's medical officer. Her three crewmates, two men and one woman, were monitored before, during and after the flight. They went through extensive testing and provided blood, saliva and other bodily materials. The research also included information from 64 astronauts who had longer stays on the International Space Station (ISS) and other missions. Inspiration4 flew at about 590 kilometers above Earth, higher than the ISS. That means the crew faced higher radiation levels. The beginning of a "second Space Age" led by private space travel companies has increased the demand to understand health risks, says Afshin Beheshti. He is with the Blue Marble Space Institute of Science in Seattle, Washington, and helped lead the research. Researchers consider the amount of time in space to be an important factor in the health effects. The longer the time in space, “the greater the increase in health risks observed," Beheshti said. Beheshti added the data detailed the major effect of spaceflight on mitochondrial and immune function. The “new findings indicate that microgravity and space radiation systematically affect the body, leading to dysfunction at the cellular level that impacts multiple organs, including muscles, kidneys, heart, skin, and (central nervous system) tissues," Beheshti said. He added that spaceflight is known to quicken aging and many diseases. But, he said, the research is identifying major health risks that can be targeted for preventative treatment. The scientists are looking forward in their work. If humans are going to be living and working in space, or living on the moon and Mars,” scientists need a basic understanding of how the body responds to space, Mason said.

The youngest American to ever orbit the earth—cancer survivor, Hayley Arceneaux, believes that when we face our fears with hope and faith, extraordinary things can happen. In this week's episode, she discusses her memoir “Wild Ride: A Memoir of I.V. Drips and Rocket Ships.” Arceneaux recounts her odyssey, from her cancer diagnosis at age 10 and the year-long treatment that inspired her goal of working with pediatric cancer patients, to living through her father's terminal cancer diagnosis, and getting her lifelong dream job at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as a physician assistant. She was sure she'd finally attained the life she wanted, and then the amazing and unimaginable happened: She was invited to go to space as a St. Jude ambassador.
With so much conversation about coastal erosion in Louisiana sediment diversions have come to the forefront as one of the tools to preserve and build up land. But the science behind it is often murky and confusing to the public. Rachel Rhode of the Environmental Defense Fund tells us more about breaking down the science of sediment diversion into something a little more approachable. In September of 2021, Hayley Arceenaux became the youngest American to travel to space at the age of 29. While she no longer holds that specific title, the St. Francisville native and cancer survivor is also the first known Cajun in space and the first person in space with a prosthetic body part. And when she's not orbiting earth she is a physician assistant at St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. Arceneaux joins us today for more capturing her amazing journey in her new book, Wild Ride: a Memoir of IV Drips and Rocket Ships. But first, after 24 years, NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson will retire at the end of the month. WWNO's Patrick Madden tells us more about Ferguson's more than two decades of service, and why finding a replacement will have more obstacles for the mayor than in previous years. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,” sings the Psalmist, “I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (NKJV) This is not just beautiful poetry. These were the fervent prayers of David (Psalm 23) as he tended to his father Jesse's sheep. At any moment, a lion or wolf could attack. Within the line, “I will fear no evil,” there's a cry for help and a statement of faith. We can all go to this prayer, just as David did, when the storms of life threaten us—filling us with fear for our lives and our future. Our two guests this week faced such storms and found solace that God was comforting them through their most desperate times. Kelley Earnhardt Miller lost both of her parents prematurely: her father—the famous NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Sr.—died in a car crash, and her mother from cancer. Through it all, she kept God at the center and found her calling in her caring for her little brother, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., not only as a troubled teen but as a successful adult. Hayley Arceneaux's childhood was hijacked by a cancer diagnosis, yet she found inspiration from the medical professionals at St. Jude's Children's Hospital where she was being treated. Her decision to become a physician assistant not only saw her return to St. Jude's to work with leukemia and lymphoma patients, but she also became the youngest American ever to orbit the earth. Both Kelley and Hayley found ways to dig deep into their relationship with God to fight through the hard times. I think that's important to keep your faith intact as we go through this earthly world, because those people inspire me and they continue to push me to grow as a Christian.” - Kelley Earnhardt Miller “I kept screaming, ‘I don't want to die. I don't want to die.' And I looked at my mom and I said, ‘God must hate me.' Because I thought, Why else would this be happening? And she said, ‘No, God loves you.'" - Hayley Arceneaux “Those days going through cancer treatment, especially at such a young age, I had some really difficult days. But when I look back at that year, I just remember the beautiful moments and the good times and the other patient families and the staff that really felt like my family.” - Hayley Arceneaux “It was just wonderful being around these really supportive adults because it helped me focus on something that was beyond just my own sickness and my own pain. They really encouraged me to feel like I had a purpose there and to be able to give back and show gratitude instead of just feeling like the sick one.” - Hayley Arceneaux “It was about eight months from when I initially got the call to go to space before we launched, and I said a lot of prayers in those eight months for training, for my safety, and definitely for the space travel itself. And having faith, I think, really helped bring so much peace.” - Hayley Arceneaux ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! Did you make it to the AAPA Conference 2022 this week in Indianapolis, or are you planning on attending next year in Nashville? In this episode, I share some of the highlights of this years' conference as well as what you can expect when you attend an AAPA conference as a physician associate / physician assistant. During the conference this year, it was so interesting to hear Simone Biles and Jane Pauley discuss their mental health journeys over the years. Hayley Arceneaux then shared her incredible story of being a pediatric cancer survivor, working for St. Jude's as a PA, then getting to be part of the SpaceX Inspiration 4 team where she was the first PA in space as their medical officer. She is such an inspiration and an example of a PA doing some pretty cool stuff! NCCPA also provided an update on PANRE-LA during the conference, which is the alternative to the PANRE (previously the only option for a recertification exam for PAs). Take a listen to hear about the overview of the exam as well as some of the benefits of this exam option. If you're due for recertification in 2024, 2025, or 2026, the application period for PANRE-LA opens soon in July 2022! This episode, Joe is joined by Hayley Arceneaux. Hayley has an incredible story. From being diagnosed with bone cancer at age 10, Hayley's life trajectory completely changed. She now works for St Jude Children's Research Hospital, the hospital that saved her life, using data to bring confidence and certainty to the medical team and families. Even more extraordinary than this though, Hayley was one of four civilians to join the SpaceX mission to space in 2021. Throughout the podcast discussion, Hayley shares how she went from someone who spends her days collecting and analyzing data, to ultimately become a test subject for how the human body reacts in space to potentially open up space travel for civilians in the future.

In this bonus episode, we'll hear from Jake Rogal. He's one of the producers for the TIME/Netflix docuseries “Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space.” Jake has been with Dr. Sian Proctor, Chris Sembroski, Jared Isaacman and Hayley Arceneaux throughout their months of training. Jake was also a producer on the ESPN/Netflix docuseries “The Last Dance,” about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls.
Dragon and the @inspiration4x astronauts are now officially in space! Dragon will conduct two phasing burns to reach its cruising orbit of 575km where the crew will spend the next three days orbiting planet Earth — SpaceX (@SpaceX) September 16, 2021 En medio de gritos y aplausos desde el centro de control se cumplieron todas las etapas del lanzamiento de la misión, gracias a unas condiciones meteorológicas favorables.
A pediatric cancer survivor has never been to space. But that will change soon. Later this month, Hayley Arceneaux and her Inspiration4 crew mates will orbit the Earth for three days in the first all-civilian mission to space. When she was 10 years old, Hayley was a patient at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Now she works there as a physician assistant. In our second episode, we'll hear from a member of her medical team, her mom and Hayley herself as she recounts her journey of perseverance.
Axios space reporter Miriam Kramer unpacks who historically has been able to go to space and why the selection of Inspiration4 crew members Sian Proctor and Hayley Arceneaux is a break from the status quo. Kramer shares what she asked Elon Musk in 2020 as the Dragon capsule flew humans for the first time on the same day of nationwide Black Lives Matter protests — and how he answered. She learns Proctor's story, from her birth in Guam where her father was a contractor for the Apollo 11 mission to becoming a NASA astronaut finalist and to her chance to make history as the first Black female pilot of a spacecraft. Kramer also explores Arceneaux's story, told by Hayley and her mother, of Hayley overcoming childhood cancer, becoming a physician assistant for the hospital that treated her and getting the opportunity to be the first person in space with a prosthesis. Credits: The Next Astronauts is reported and produced by Miriam Kramer, Amy Pedulla, Naomi Shavin, and Alice Wilder. Dan Bobkoff is Executive Producer. Mixing, sound design, and music supervision by Alex Sugiura. Theme music and original score by Michael Hanf. Fact-checking and research by Jacob Knutson.
