To find out more, we talked to Nghi Vo, whose recent books include The City in Glass and The Brides of High Hill. Plus we talk about how to include white characters in a story without centering whiteness.

This week, we're joined by the wonderful Nghi Vo, whose The Brides of High Hill is out this week. It's the fifth of her ongoing “Singing Hills” sequence of novellas about the peripatetic Cleric Chih and their sharp-tongued companion hoopoe, Almost Brilliant. We discuss how Nghi has made use of different storytelling modes throughout the series, her novels The Chosen and the Beautiful and Siren Queen, a forthcoming novella (again alluding to the world of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and a very intriguing novel due in the fall, The City in Glass, which involves doing very interesting things with libraries. There are also, as usual, some totally irrelevant digressions involving everything from writing blurbs to The Clan of the Cave Bear.

At a time when many breweries are celebrating their tenth anniversaries Hackney Brewery, now the ripe old age of 12, could be considered elder statesmen of the London brewing community. Especially more recently, with the team celebrating two years at their new home in High Hill, Walthamstow. Part of the burgeoning and brilliant Blackhorse Beer Mile, Hackney Brewery is thriving thanks in no small part to their excellent taproom space that welcomes visitors four days a week. The High Hill Taproom is their new facility where the team aim to create a experience that you can immerse yourself in through their art, latest releases, beers from their friends around the world and events to celebrate the multicultural capital it calls home. In this podcast, we speak to co-founder Jon about the importance of the taproom in the brewery's business proposition, Hackney's role in the Blackhorse Beer Mile, those early days building the business with colleague Pete and also the secrets behind the team's successful and sessionable sour range - namely the delicious Millions of Peaches.

They dug deep into their past experiences to bring us powerful metaphors to help wrapped our minds and hearts around climate change today. New Puzzler Question You are chatting with an acquaintance, let's call him Larry. Somehow you get to talking about windmills and the rapid advances in renewable technology. Larry is sympathetic but bothered by something. He says to you, Yeah, I understand that these windmills can help to get us off of coal and gas, but they look so ugly! I hate how they are destroying the countryside. So What would you say to Larry? Try to think of something that will open up the conversation and get him to better understand climate change.
