Bible Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 "Look out below!" Ansel jumped off a stump into the bed of crisp autumn leaves. Amy and Ariel laughed as wide eyes stared at them from the leaf pile. "The leaf pile is alive!" Amy shrieked. "Attack!" The girls flopped into the pile of leaves and tickled their little brother. Mom propped her rake up against a tree and grinned, watching the craziness unfold."That was fun," Ansel declared when the leaf battle had subsided. "Remember when Dad used to pile up the leaves as tall as the car, then throw us in?" Ariel asked."Yeah. I miss him," Amy replied, her voice quiet. Mom gathered the three kids into a hug. "I miss him too, kids. We had some fun times, didn't we?" "It feels like we'll never see him again." Ariel's eyes filled with tears. "I understand, sweetie." Mom's eyes clouded over. "Life isn't the same without Dad, and it never will be. But, because Dad belonged to Jesus, we have the hope of heaven.""Heaven seems so far away." Amy sighed. "It does," Mom agreed. "You three have chosen to follow Jesus, right?" The kids nodded. "The Bible promises that those who belong to Jesus have hope, even in the middle of something as sad as the death of someone we love. Jesus died on the cross for our sins, and three days later, He rose from the dead! When He did that, He conquered death. We grieve our loss, but we know that it is not the end. One day Jesus will raise all Christians who have died from the dead, and we will live with Him forever!" "Dad just got to see Jesus before us!" Ansel declared. Mom smiled. "Exactly. We're sad he's gone, but because of Jesus, we have hope that we will one day see Dad again." "In Sunday school, our teacher said Jesus can return at any time. We're going to hear the voice of an angel, and a trumpet, and He'll be here in the twinkling of an eye..." "We'll meet Jesus in the air!" Amy interrupted her sister excitedly. "Like this!" Ansel scooped an armful of leaves up and let them fly into the air, colors golden in the afternoon light. Savannah ColemanHow About You?Have you ever lost someone you love? When you lose a family member or a friend, the sorrow and anger can feel overwhelming. As heartbreaking as death is, Jesus promises that death is not the end for those who trust in Him. Just as He rose again after dying for our sins, we will be raised to life one day too. He gives us the hope of eternal life with Him.Today's Key Verse:For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. Oct 19, 2020: NY Post Reporters Disavow Biden Story

AM Quickie

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: A new report shows that the New York Post’s explosive Hunter Biden story was so shaky multiple reporters inside the tabloid refused to have their bylines put on it -- but editors there pushed it ahead anyway. Meanwhile, Bolivia heads to the polls for the first time since election dysfunction and a right-wing coup ousted socialist president Evo Morales last year. His party stands a chance of retaking the government, but the election could once again get messy. And lastly, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sets a 48 hour deadline for stimulus talks with the President, challenging the White House to get an acceptable bill on the table before Tuesday. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: Generally, if a reporter thinks a story is too sketchy to put their byline on it, it’s probably to sketchy to print. But not at the New York Post! According to a new report by the New York Times, the Post rammed through the controversial and quite possibly bogus story about Hunter Biden’s laptop and corruption implications despite the protests of multiple reporters who worked on it. The Times reports that the story came basically hand-fed from Rudy Giuliani, who said he deliberately gave it to the Post because quote “either nobody else would take it, or if they took it, they would spend all the time they could to try to contradict it before they put it out.” endquote. Crazy how that worked out for him! Sure enough, the Post ran the story. Bruce Golding, the original reporter who wrote most of the story, took a stand against top editors and refused to put his byline on the piece, as he had serious doubts about its credibility. The story, in short, used alleged emails on a laptop hard drive allegedly owned by Hunter Biden to show that Joe Biden, his father, had allegedly directed U.S. foreign policy to benefit his son’s business interests while Vice President. Notice how many times I just said “allegedly.” That’s because the story as a whole was a REAL stretch. With Golding washing his hands of the matter, Post editors then slapped a new byline on it: Emma-Jo Morris, a politics editor freshly at the post by way of Sean Hannity’s Fox News Show, whose Instagram feed includes several pictures of her with Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Crazy how that one worked out too! The Post also put another reporter’s byline on the story without even telling her it was going to be on there. Clearly, things over at New York’s most venerable source of tawdry, right-wing garbage are proceeding, well, actually pretty normally for them. We should expect this by now! Bolivia Heads to the Polls Sunday was election day in Bolivia, and though it may take days for election results to come in, the results could change the country’s history or tear it apart all over again. If you remember, last year a right wing coup ousted Bolivia’s socialist president Evo Morales. Morales and his party won nationwide elections in 2019, which quickly devolved after right wing parties weaponized accusations of election fraud to spark protests and force an hard-right usurper, Jeanine Áñez, into power. Áñez, who once declared the indigenous people Morales hails from quote “satanic,” is not running in the current election as she didn’t wish to split the conservative vote. Morales was a flawed avatar for the country’s push for equality, especially in his fourth, legally contested run for office, but he unquestionably improved living conditions for millions of Bolivians under his control. In Sunday’s election, Morales’s Movement Towards Socialism party is represented by former finance minister Luis Arce, who has a slight edge in the polls over his main challenger, centrist journalist and former president Carlos Mesa. Voting is mandatory in Bolivia, and on Sunday, multiple publications reported long lines outside of polling stations. Both parties are expecting contested results and possibly protests or violence after the count is announced. Pelosi Sets Bailout Deadline After a chaotic week of stubbornness, Nancy Pelosi is giving the White House a 48 hour deadline to deliver her an acceptable stimulus bill if they want it passed before the election. Pelosi and treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin have been in largely unproductive talks for months, and are still hung up over the meager offerings the White House is prepared to hand out. What Pelosi should do here is a nasty choice: if she caves to the White House’s demands, Mnuchin could slip through a bill that includes loose language about a nationwide testing program and a whole host of nasty corporate-friendly liability provisions. But if she doesn’t agree to anything, there’s almost no way that struggling American families will get a second $1200 stimulus check. Some progressives are pushing Pelosi to take the deal in the hope that some relief makes it to everyday Americans. But it’s worth noting that even if she and Mnuchin strike a deal, Senate Republicans under Mitch McConnell are even more opposed to new spending than the White House is. The thinking is that at least if Pelosi passes something, the blame goes to McConnell if Americans continue to suffer. Most analysis thinks that a compromise isn’t likely, which means Americans living on the edge have little chance of getting relief before the election. That’s bad for Trump, of course, who will face a worsening economic picture as voting day edges clearer, but it’s also, you know, bad for all the people who desperately need assistance, and no amount of political skirmishing will fix the wounds the people in power have already caused. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer can’t really catch a break: During a Trump rally in her state on Saturday, the president again sparked his supporters to chant “Lock her up.” Whitmer, in an interview with NBC, justifiably said the President was inciting right wing terrorism, like the idiots who plotted to kidnap her just over a week ago. Pro-democracy, student-led protests continued in Thailand this weekend in defiance of a government ban on protesting, despite facing transit shutdowns, targeted arrests and police brutality. Thailand’s ruling party took power in a military coup in 2014. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who led one of the most successful responses to Coronavirus around the world, led her left-wing labor party to a massive, resounding victory on Saturday, corralling over 49 percent of the vote and crushing the center-right opposition party to establish a huge majority in the country’s Parliament. And finally, the Trump administration is reportedly planning a massive deregulatory push to gut federal agencies and environmental protections if they lose the election, tying up a future Biden administration in months if not years of work trying to put things back in order. Sounds like the kind of spite we should expect! That’s it for the Majority Report’s AM Quickie today. Stay tuned for the full show with Sam later this afternoon. If so, why have we earned that reputation? 2) In Sunday’s teaching, we were told that two of the reasons for hatred and hypocrisy in the church are that we have lost sight of all that Jesus has done for us, and that we have lost sight of what he has called us to. What are some other reasons?3) What are some things that we should remember that Jesus has done for us? What are some things he’s called us to?4) Read Matthew 23:13. Can you think of actions or attitudes that you have demonstrated that have caused others to feel unwelcome in the church? How about actions and attitudes that have made you feel unwelcome? Is anything Jesus asks us to do ever insignificant?2) Are there any small acts of obedience that you’ve been neglecting because they seem to be small or insignificant?3) In Sunday’s sermon, we discussed how Jesus' use of a donkey on the way into Jerusalem was a sign of peace in the 1st century. Read Colossians 1:19-20 and consider how Jesus' death could lead to our peace with God.4) 500 years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Zechariah prophesied that a righteous and victorious king would come riding into Jerusalem on a donkey (Zechariah 9:9). What can this fulfilled prophecy show us about how God is in control even, even during difficult times?5) In Luke 19:36-40, we see the crowds cheering for Jesus because of who they wanted Him to be (political leader/earthly king), but Jesus came for things much bigger than that. Do you feel that people today still worship Jesus because of what they can get out of Him or what He's willing to do for them?6) In Luke 19:41-44, Jesus weeps because people have missed who He really is and what He came to do. With Easter upon us, what can you do to focus more on Christ in order to fully appreciate His death, the power of His resurrection, and what it means for your life?

Consumption and dependence on meat referenced in the bible are often made in reference to death and disconnection from God.“6 You have killed many people in this city and filled its streets with the dead. 7 Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: The bodies you have thrown there are the meat and this city is the pot, but I will drive you out of it.” - Ezekiel 11:6-7.~“3 Tell this rebellious people a parable and say to them: This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Put on the cooking pot; put it on and pour water into it. 4 Put into it the pieces of meat, all the choice pieces — the leg and the shoulder. Fill it with the best of these bones; 5 take the pick of the flock. Pile wood beneath it for the bones; bring it to a boil and cook the bones in it. For this is what the Sovereign Lord says… 10 Cook the meat well, mixing in the spices; and let the bones be charred. 11 Then set the empty pot on the coals till it becomes hot and its copper glows, so that its impurities may be melted, and its deposit burned away. 12 It has frustrated all efforts; its heavy deposit has not been removed, not even by fire. 13 Now your impurity is lewdness. Because I tried to cleanse you, but you would not be cleansed from your impurity, you will not be clean again until my wrath against you has subsided. 14 I the Lord have spoken. The time has come for me to act. I will not hold back; I will not have pity, nor will I relent. You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions declares the Sovereign Lord.” - Ezekiel 24:3-14~4 “You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves. 5 You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. 6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. 7 Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end.”- Amos 6:4-7If we take a look at this from a different perspective; what we still don’t see in scripture are God’s people or followers referred to as glistening meat that I crave or a cluster of new eggs to eat. However, in Micah 7 listen to what is being said about Israel’s misery.“1 What misery is mine! I am like one who gathers summer fruit at the gleaning of the vineyard; there is no cluster of grapes to eat, none of the early figs that I crave. 2 The faithful have been swept from the land; not one upright person remains.”The upright people of Israel are referred to as a gleaning cluster of fresh grapes or early ripe figs. Why do we consistently see references to fruits, vegetables, and grains in the bible but no references to God’s chosen people as being meat, eggs or fish? Was God intentional when He instructed the vernacular of the bible? Was Jesus intentional about his word usage when using parables to answer questions of the Pharisees?I hope something inside of you is starting to wrestle with the idea of diet and health as it relates to scripture. My goal today isn’t to change your mind completely. My goal is to help open our eyes to the possible fallacy, there is only one way and it’s the only way because it’s how we’ve been told to do it. If you think what I’m asking you to do is extreme, then let’s take a closer look at an even more extreme case of full reliance upon our Heavenly Father for our complete needs through John the Baptist. In Mark 1:4, Jon the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching about baptism of repentance and forgiveness of sins in the wilderness. John was eating whatever God provided him in the wilderness, but it doesn’t say he killed animals for food. Is it probable, John ate plants, insects, and possibly manna as we have seen God provide elsewhere in scripture, especially if John the Baptist was supposedly sent “to prepare the way for Jesus” (Isaiah 40:3; Mal. 3:1; Matt. 3:3)?Exodus 16:31(KJV) - And the house of Israel called the name thereof Manna: and it was like coriander seed, white; and the taste of it was like wafers made with honey.Numbers 11:7 (KJV) - Now the manna resembled coriander seed, and its appearance was like that of gum resin.Deuteronomy 8:3 (KJV) - He humbled you, and in your hunger gave you manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LordDeuteronomy 8:16 (KJV) - He fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers had not known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to prosper.3) The old way of Christian health thinking leads to sickness, death, and destruction long before we carry out the calling God has for us. How do we define consumption? How is the human body limited to what we can consume? In Sunday school we often talk about what we need to keep our kids and ourselves from consuming with our eyes and ears. This is especially taught to males because we are more easily affected by visual stimuli. According to the 2004 study published in the Emory University Health Sciences Center, “The emotion control center of the brain, the amygdala, shows significantly higher levels of activation in males viewing sexual visual stimuli than females viewing the same images, according to a Center for Behavioral Neuroscience study led by Emory University psychologists Stephan Hamann and Kim Wallen” (Neuroscience, 2004) We’re also taught to keep our ears from consuming songs or language which could affect the way we think, feel, or act.The bible adds an additional layer of consumption in Acts 28:27, “For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.” Here the Lord talks about consuming with our hearts and if we aren’t able to consume with our hearts, we cannot have an understanding or have healing.Again, it talks about this in Deuteronomy 29:4, “But to this day the Lord has not given you the heart to understand or eyes to see or ears to hear.” Looking closely at what consumption means through scripture we are reminded consumption is anything entering the body and has an effect on the body. Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and we are to protect it from all forms of attack, whether they be physical, emotional, auditory, visual, and spiritual. 1 Corinthians 6:12-19 says to glorify God in body and spirit.12 All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. 13 Foods for the stomach and the stomach for foods, but God will destroy both it and them… 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?” - 1 Corinthians 6:12-19The church fails to recognize food consumption as a stronghold in Christian life unless it is clinically classified as a “disorder” or the “overconsumption” of something. But why is this, based on what we’ve read thus far?The devil is the master of strategy and he’s campaigning in war siege tactics. He doesn’t need to take us out of the game right away. He knows God has a plan for us but if he can outwit us one meal a day, seven days a week and twice on Saturdays, 52 weeks a year, until we have that doctor’s appointment or that phone call comes – we have cancer, we have an auto-immune disease, the biopsy came back positive for _______ … how many small battles did the devil win at the dinner table before we could realize what has happened, to us, to our children, to our family member or friend? It’s my strong belief God is sending his message to us through new research, new health studies, and data. It seems to me we are caught in a parable story of the religious person on the top of a house during a flood…I Sent You a Rowboat ~A very religious man was once caught in rising floodwaters. He climbed onto the roof of his house and trusted God to rescue him. A neighbor came by in a canoe and said, “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll paddle to safety.”“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me.”A short time later the police came by in a boat. “The waters will soon be above your house. Hop in and we’ll take you to safety.”“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me.”A little time later a rescue services helicopter hovered overhead, let down a rope ladder and said. “The waters will soon be above your house. Climb the ladder and we’ll fly you to safety.”“No thanks” replied the religious man. “I’ve prayed to God and I’m sure he will save me.”All this time the floodwaters continued to rise until soon they reached above the roof and the religious man drowned. When he arrived at heaven, he demanded an audience with God. Ushered into God’s throne room he said, “Lord, why am I here in heaven? I prayed for you to save me, I trusted you to save me from that flood.”“Yes, you did my child” replied the Lord. “And I sent you a canoe, a boat, and a helicopter. But you never got in.”Because all knowledge and wisdom come from the Lord, should we not adhere to new scientific discoveries in health? A Great book recommendation is How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease by Dr. Michael Greger, M.D. and Gene Stone.“The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle.” In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-recognized lecturer, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of death in America—heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson’s, high blood pressure, and more—and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The 15 leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn’t have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger’s advice, all of it backed up by peer-reviewed scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. What about liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (our #1 killer)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to help prevent the disease, but arrest and even reverse it.In addition to showing what to eat to help prevent the top 15 causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen—a checklist of the foods we should try to consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting-edge nutritional science, these doctor’s orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives” (NutritionFacts.org).Are you familiar with the concept of siege warfare? “Siege Warfare was an ancient and medieval military operation involving the surrounding and blockading of a town, castle or fortress by an army in the attempt to capture it. To lay siege or to besiege.” The term derives from the Middle English word 'sege' from the Old French meaning blockade” (Alchin, 2018).Scripture itself offers a vivid scope of true siege warfare and the atrocious effects that ripple through the affected people. Referring to 2 Kings 6, “Syria Besieges Samaria in Famine:”24 And it happened after this that Ben-Hadad king of Syria gathered all his army, and went up and besieged Samaria. 25 And there was a great famine in Samaria; and indeed they besieged it until a donkey’s head was sold for eighty shekels of silver, and one-fourth of a [a]kab of dove droppings for five shekels of silver.26 Then, as the king of Israel was passing by on the wall, a woman cried out to him, saying, “Help, my lord, O king!”27 And he said, “If the Lord does not help you, where can I find help for you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?” 28 Then the king said to her, “What is troubling you?”And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.’ 29 So we boiled my son, and ate him. And I said to her on the next day, ‘Give your son, that we may eat him’; but she has hidden her son.”30 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the woman, that he tore his clothes; and as he passed by on the wall, the people looked, and there underneath he had sackcloth on his body. Here in these few lines of scripture we see murder, famine, extreme starvation, desperation, isolation, chaos, items being sold on the black market for exorbitant prices, cannibalism, manipulation, deception, murder, death, destruction, deterioration of morality and judgment, survival mentality of the individual over others, bartering system, etc. The list could go on but just in these passages, we can visualize the effects of siege warfare can have on people and its pure effectiveness to deteriorate the target. When you think of a Temple what comes to mind? I think of 1000 BCE - King David Conquers Jerusalem and declares it the city capital of the Jewish Kingdom or in 960 BCE - David's Son, King Solomon, Builds the first Jewish Temple (Jewish Virtual Library, 1999). This isn’t just a fortress, this is a complete and heavily fortified structure to protect the Holy of Holies. The layers of the Temple Mount starting at the innermost portion moving outward included: The Holy of Holies, The Holy Place, The Court, The Upper or Inner Court, The Great Court or Outer Court, The Temple walls, and the elevated Temple Mount walls. Additionally, outside of the Temple Mount walls was the city surrounded by yet another great wall (Dolphin, n.d.).The entire Temple Mount was a walled place where the whole population could run to for safety during an attack. The walls of the temple are 2.4966 miles in length surrounding the Temple Mount. They are an average height of 39.37 feet tall and their average thickness are 8.2 feet thick. Just one of the large cut stones at the base of the walls can weight over 160,000 lbs. That is not just a temple, that is a strong fortress (Biblical Archaeology Society Staff, 2017).If Satan’s ultimate goal is to destroy us, do you think he stops trying to find new ways to attack us? When besieging a town or fortified structure, armies would cut off the town from the surrounding area stripping them of their resources and supplies from the outside world. Satan wants to cut us off from the vital resources God has put on this planet for us. We are constantly under attack by Satan and he is always trying to find a weak spot in our fortification. It is an all-out attack by land, sea, and air and he will stop at nothing to tear down our walls. Why wouldn’t he try to attack our health? As warrior men of God, we can’t be hypocrites who preach faith, walking in Christ, and praying daily but at the first sign of a male gathering we throw out what we know about protecting our temple fortress. We make the choices each day to fill our bodies with wholesome food providing the most nutrients and healing qualities. Satan doesn’t need to win today but he is winning one meal at a time.According to an article published in October of 2017, “America's Obesity Epidemic Reaches Record High” by Felix Gussone, MD, “America's obesity crisis appears more unstoppable than ever. A troubling new report released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that almost 40 percent of American adults and nearly 20 percent of adolescents are obese — the highest rates ever recorded for the U.S. "It's difficult to be optimistic at this point," said Dr. Frank Hu, chair of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. "The trend of obesity has been steadily increasing in both children and adults despite many public health efforts to improve nutrition and physical activity." The continued weight increase in the youngest Americans is especially worrisome for long-term health. One in five adolescents, ages 12–19; one in five kids, ages 6–11, and one in ten preschoolers, ages 2–5 are considered obese, not just overweight” (Felix Gussone, 2017). If our Standard American Diet is killing us and our children through heart disease, diabetes, blood clots, clogged arteries, high blood pressure, cancer, sleep disorders, stroke, and suffocating our organs, then who do you think is really winning the battle? In practical terms, we are supposed to put on the full armor of God, but we can’t put on the armor if we are too big to fit in it. If we are in desperate need for a plus-size in God’s armor, chances are we’re too big to move when you need to. An organization is only as strong or as fast as its slowest, weakest member. If our obesity is affecting our personal health, how much more is Satan affecting our lives and our spiritual health? We’re depressed, we’re out of breath, we can’t move, and we can barely serve.Ephesians 6:11-18 King James Version (KJV)11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;Dealing with our overall health is much more than a personal choice, we are consciously letting Satan affect multiple facets of our lives and it is preventing us from carrying out our responsibility to the Body of Christ, to have a full and joyful life, and to carry out the calling God has for us. If we are too sick to move, how can we have the endurance to finish the race?We need to radically change the way we, as Christians, view diet and health in our church and community culture. When the topic of food and diet is brought up in community with one another. This only comes with helping one another, providing inspiration to others, and holding each other accountable. If anybody has ever been on a sports team, worked for an organization, or sat on the advisory board of a non-profit, we’ve come to realize we can’t have changed as a whole without accountability.

Onaway Assembly of God

In Sunday's message we hear from Pastor Kamron on how our God is a creative God and HE is challenging us to be creative as well. The Bible tells us that we were created in the image of God. Imagination is the outlet that God can use to reveal HIS creativity to the world yet too often we are comfortable on the sidelines. Let's get in the game & follow the GOD of creation.

Can you believe it? Husker football starts on Saturday! For the sake of example only, allow me to paint an awful scenario. What if the Huskers lose their opener to South Alabama? Then they follow that with a heart breaker in Colorado? Then, they come back flat and Northern Illinois shocks them? And then in their despair lose the Big Ten opener to Illinois, a bottom feeder? They follow that loss by getting crushed by Ohio State. How many losses could you take before you give up on the team? In Sunday’s passage in Genesis 35-36, Jacob suffered a string of losses. But he didn’t lose games, He lost people: The nurse who raised him (Genesis 35:8) His beloved wife. (Genesis 35:16-21) His father. (Genesis 35:27-29) On top of these losses, Jacob's oldest son, Reuben, had relations with one of his concubines. (Genesis 35:22). Finally, Jacob’s brother, Esau, moved away. (Genesi 36:6-8) So in effect, Jacob lost these people. Jacob was hemorrhaging relationships What kept him from giving up on life? God did. He was present in Jacob’s life. Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-Aram, and He blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; You shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called him Israel. Genesis 35:9-10 And He promised to bless Jacob. God also said to him, “I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come forth from you. “The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, And I will give the land to your descendants after you.” Genesis 35:11-12 Whether it is death or moves or busyness, life has a way of taking relationships from us. When our relational losses mount, we don’t have to give up. Like Jacob, God’s presence and His promises will sustain us.

Just a short one this week because my daughter is getting married this weekend. Exciting and busy! I want to share with you something I learned from a lesson I taught this last Sunday for the Watford Church of Christ. It’s about the significance of asking good questions.  I taught from Romans 15 about “Abba, Father”.  It was a sermon with a good proportion of discussion and sharing -  interactive. As part of getting the discussion going I asked a couple of questions. You can have a look at those in the video of the sermon or by listening to the podcast version. The first question was something along the lines of, “What does ‘abba' mean to you?”  You will notice in the recording that I had to keep repeating and rephrasing the question many times before I got responses. This happened when I asked a similar question about the word ‘father’.  On reflection, I realised that I’d been lazy about framing the question. It wasn’t precise enough. It didn’t immediately engage the heart and/or the mind. It was too general, bland and vague.  Here are three tips for asking good questions which will generate discussion: Avoid ’yes/no’ questions. Closed questions do not create discussion, they simply give you an answer. Sometimes that’s what you want, but if you are hoping to generate sharing it’s important to avoid such questions. Engage the imagination. In Sunday's context it could have looked something like this: “Imagine you’re sitting down with your father. You want to have a deep conversation with him.  You sense he is willing to have this kind of conversation. What would you say to him? What would you ask him? Now, imagine doing the same thing with your father God.  What would that look like? What would you ask him? What are the barriers that prevent this from happening?" ‘When’ questions.  Ask people to think back to the past and times when they have had particularly meaningful intimate times with God. What was going on then? What prompted that intimacy? How did it feel?  When you ask ‘when’ questions you are helping people to access past experiences which may help them discover the contemporary application of what the Bible is teaching. There’s much more that can be said about asking good questions, but this is a short tip because of the busy week ahead! However, I would like to know what you think. What tips do you have?  What questions are you using? What principles do you use for selecting questions? What’s been your experience of asking questions as part of a lesson? Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community.  Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical? Send me your questions or suggestions. Here’s the email: malcolm@malcolmcox.org (mailto:malcolm@malcolmcox.org) . James Harden (34/12) and Chris Paul (18/9/8) combined for 52 points and 21 assists on 50% shooting on Sunday as Houston won its fifth consecutive game with a 129-120 victory at Minnesota. Coming off Saturday's 107-101 win in New Orleans, it was an impressive showing on both ends of a road back-to-back for the Rockets (56-14) — each against probable Western Conference playoff teams. With the two wins by Houston and losses by Golden State (53-17) on Friday and Toronto (52-18) on Sunday, the Rockets now effectively have a four-game advantage (counting tiebreakers) on both teams in the race for home-court advantage throughout the NBA playoffs with only 12 games left to play. Harden, long considered the league's MVP frontrunner, also led the way in scoring (32/11/8) in New Orleans. Clint Capela (13/11, 3 blocks) posted another double-double on the interior against Anthony Davis, while Paul (21/8/5) and Trevor Ariza (17 points, 4-of-6 on 3s) each bounced back from poor showings in Thursday's tight win over the Clippers. In Sunday night's postgame show, we explore those storylines and much more from the weekend back-to-back at New Orleans and Minnesota. Besides the aforementioned subjects, other topics include lackluster showings for stretches of each second half, apparent minor hand injuries to Harden and Capela and when Houston can and/or should rest them; and the growth shown by Capela in a key three-game stretch against Davis, DeAndre Jordan, and Karl-Anthony Towns. #Rockets #NBA #Wolves #Pelicans Learn more about your ad choices. Can a person really change? Can a man be jealous, greedy, and power hungry at 20, and then at 40 be caring and willing to sacrifice himself for another? Modern Family Matters #1 The Parable of the Good Samaritan is one of the most beloved and familiar in the Bible. It begins with a lawyer testing Jesus with the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” The text in Luke 10:25-37 contains five questions, one of which is the title of this Sunday’s message, “Who Is My Neighbor?” The persistent lawyer in the story pushes Jesus with that question. The real question for the story though is the one that flows from the attorney’s accurate answer to a question of Jesus. And that question is “How do I love my neighbor?" In this legislative season of efforts to pass bills connected to immigration, capital punishment, gun violence, and marriage equality, the challenge to love our neighbor is extended. In Sunday’s message we will share four ways to love our neighbor and the tale of two Methodists who changed the nation 66 years ago. May 5, 2013 Luke 10:25-37 View Transcript

It is an inspiring tribute to the Nobel Peace Prize winner who led the civil rights movement in this land. In Sunday’s worship we will pray a litany of Dr. King’s, “God Is Able.” I hope you will be present as we enjoy some special music from the spirituals’ tradition and begin a short, new sermon series, NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP. This Sunday’s message from Psalm 4 is “The Gift of Good Sleep.” The Gift of Good Sleep Second Sunday after Epiphany Scripture: Psalm 4 View Transcript

In Sunday's class, we had a guest speaker. Linda Benthall spent several years in China, teaching English and leading Bible studies and starting a house church. I asked her to come into the class and give a discussion of what a mission mindset looks like in attitude and action. She gave a great talk and I'm very grateful for her insights.
