Today we are talking about how a focus on happiness can improve productivity, leadership capability, effectiveness in negotiation, and countless other benefits for businesses and individuals with Professor Sonja Lyubomirsky. Professor Lyubomirsky is a Russian-born, American professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of California and author of the bestseller The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want – a book of strategies backed by scientific research that can be used to increase happiness.  Sonja is also an associate editor of the Journal of Positive Psychology and is often quoted in news articles about positive psychology and happiness. I'm delighted that we were able to get Sonja to join us for this short episode that really does pack a weighty, scientific punch.  We explore what determines our happiness, strategies for improving happiness and the benefits to individuals and organisations. And if that wasn't enough, I also asked her about the links between happiness and COVID, and what we can do as leaders to smoothly welcome people back to our physical places of work. Lesslie is a long-standing member of the Institute of Directors, the Criminal Justice Disability Advisory Group, the Police Scotland Independent Ethics Advisory Group and a panel member in the Social Entitlement Chamber of the judiciary. We explore leadership and operating in a VUCA world with Lieutenant General (Retired) Ben Hodges who holds the Pershing Chair in Strategic Studies at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA), that he joined in February 2018. A native of Quincy, Florida, General Hodges graduated from the United States Military Academy in May 1980 and was commissioned in the Infantry. After his first assignment as an Infantry Lieutenant in Garlstedt, Germany, he commanded Infantry units at the Company, Battalion, and Brigade levels in the 101st Airborne Division, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. General Hodges has also served in a numerous Joint and Army Staff positions including Aide-de-Camp to the Supreme Allied Commander Europe; Chief of Staff, 18th Airborne Corps; Director of the Pakistan Afghanistan Coordination Cell on the Joint Staff; Chief of Legislative Liaison for the United States Army; and Commander, NATO Allied Land Command (İzmir, Turkey).  His last military assignment was as Commanding General, United States Army Europe from 2014 to 2017. He retired from the U.S. Army in January 2018 before taking up his role at CEPA. I know I probably shouldn't say this, but this episode ranks in my personal top 5 as I found Ben to be an incredibly humble and erudite man. Today we are talking about leadership skills and building resilience with Colonel Caroline Woodbridge-Lewin, MBE of the British Army.  Caroline was commissioned into the Royal Signals in 1995 and has held various Regimental appointments serving in the United Kingdom, USA, Cyprus, Germany, Bosnia and Iraq.  As a staff officer, she has worked within the Special Forces Directorate as a Capability & Acquisition officer, she was Chief of Staff of the Defence Academy and recently assumed the role of Head of the Information Warfare Group.  Amongst all of this she has attained a bachelor's degree and master's degree whilst serving, was the co-Chair of the Army Service Women's Network and is currently Chair of Hut Eighteen, a Defence led Information Warfare Network.  Outside of work she enjoys playing and coaching hockey, cycling, skiing and walking in the hills with her two daughters and Springer Spaniel, Harley. There are so many pearls of wisdom in this episode. A few personal highlights for me are Caroline's thoughts around building resilience – and not being overly critical of ourselves, the need to lead management activity and being very intentional about where she positions herself as a leader… and why. In this episode we are talking about how leaders can incorporate the skills of a coach into their day-to-day leadership style with Teg Dosanjh from Samsung Electronics UK.  Teg is the Director of Connected Services and Technology at Samsung Electronics UK, a role he's held since 2016. Teg has over 20 years' experience in the telecoms industry, having held senior roles with brands such as Telefonica O2, HTC and Vodafone. He has significant expertise in developing successful business strategy, commercial partner management and cross category innovation. But that's not why I was so keen to have Teg join me on the show. I've had the privilege of working with Teg and his team over the past few years, and I've been struck by his commitment to developing and coaching those that he leads. Having experienced the good, the bad and the ugly of leadership himself, Teg has modelled himself into a developmental leader. One who integrates the skills of a coach into his day-to-day leadership and management.  By his own admission, he sets very high standards for his team and has high expectations of them, but he also works very hard to support, coach and mentor them. In this episode we really get into the weeds of why he has adopted this approach, how he developed the skills he needed and what this looks like on a practical basis. I'm excited to have Andrew Nicholson, CEO and founder of Osprey Flight Solutions, join the show. Osprey Flight Solutions is an organisation that is driving a quantum shift in the capabilities available to the aviation industry for security risk management.   Andrew spent 12 years in the Royal Navy and 6 years with UK Special Forces, which included operational tours in all major conflict regions. Leaving the military at the height of the Somali Piracy phenomenon, for 3 years Andrew led the maritime and oil and gas divisions for the largest provider of maritime security in the industry.     Andrew moved to International SOS and Control Risks in July 2014 to head up the aviation security team. Realising that the industry's requirement for risk management support had changed in the wake of the MH17 disaster, Andrew co-founded Osprey, which is now recognised across the industry as the leader in open-source risk management data, developing innovative tools to support all operators, no matter their size or resource, in conducting comprehensive and accurate risk management. One of the many highlights in this episode is Andrew talking freely about his leadership approach. It's an approach that is founded on a belief that each individual in his organisation is more important than the commercial success of the company – and how this panned out practically during the pandemic. As listeners of the show, stay tuned right to the very end as two of my former guests – Dr Vikki Barnes and Carole Barnes – have provided an exclusive offer for you. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. Emily Prokop is a podcast editor and consultant from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: John has already had a morning! It’ll feel good, we promise ;) We start talking about how we organize ourselves during the day. Emily is very Writey-Downey, are you? We know we do so much better when we set up a plan, even if we end up having to throw it out the window if something happens. John walks us through how his brain lies to him — can you relate? We talk a lot about planning in this episode and different methods, including writing things down and a deep look at Emily’s weekly and daily writing/planning routines. “Limited Time” gets us every time! Emily has realized that her toddler turns her brain to mush by the end of the day and has to adjust her whole schedule. Emily’s porn is counting down to when preschool begins, for sure. She’s going to bed earlier and waking up earlier, when she can have time to herself to plan before anyone wakes up and puts her in reactive mode. We both realize we need to find a release that’s not food. John needs a Lifing Toolbox! 33:06 Emily breaks down her morning pages and how she plans her day. (Thanks for the question, Craig!) She starts with Morning Pages: 3 pages of freewriting, from the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron; Then she does a to-do list in a bullet journal style, but separates it into three sections: Self-Care, Work, and Home & Family. Thanks to the Business Fabulous Podcast for giving me the idea to put stickers in my notebook! - Emily Emily can’t wait to miss her kids! We have some AMAZING #WinningWednesday posts! Do you have an audio drama or storytelling podcast you like? Let John know! John’s therapist says food addiction is the slowest, more painful way to kill yourself. Wow! It’s so sad and true!
