Most women are told that narrower eating windows = better results, but according to Whoop's Global Head of Performance and Science Kristen Holmes, this common advice is causing more harm than good — especially for women's hormones. In this short episode, Kristen Holmes breaks down the science behind circadian rhythms, metabolic health, and the crucial connection between eating patterns and the menstrual cycle. In today's episode, Dr. Scott and Tommy discuss a compelling October 2021 study on time-restricted feeding (TRF) that improves blood glucose and insulin sensitivity in overweight patients with type 2 diabetes. The randomized trial featured a 10-hour daily feeding window without specific diet constraints. TRF led to a 28% reduction in calorie intake, improved overall health scores, and significant drops in A1C, fasting glucose, body weight, and insulin resistance. Notably, these positive outcomes occurred without intentional changes in physical activity or diet quality. The study underscores the potential of a simple and sustainable 10-hour TRF approach for managing type 2 diabetes. For Intermittent Fasting Coach and Author Laurie Lewis, menopause dealt a crushing blow: brain fog, lack of balance, memory loss, and the sudden gain of 50 pounds. She tried everything she knew to feel better, and the methods that worked in the past made no difference. After struggling for many years, Laurie stumbled upon Intermittent Fasting and started having an Eating Window that same day. The menopausal fog lifted in less than one week. She had more energy and felt more “like herself.” She lost 51 pounds in 15 months and has kept it off for over five years. Now, at 60 years old, Laurie has kept an Eating Window every day for 6.5 years. Through her business, Fast Forward Wellness, she is changing lives through her group classes & 1:1 personal coaching and is recognized globally as a go-to Intermittent Fasting expert. Laurie and I take a look at long term intermittent fasting and challenges that brings. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/graeme-currie/message

Yes, it is possible to eat the foods you love and live your life feeling strong, vibrant, and lean! Stubborn hormonal fat hit hard in 2012, causing her to suddenly gain 50 pounds. For years, she tried everything and none of the old tricks worked. She hit rock-bottom and almost resigned to the “fact” that she would keep getting heavier and feeling worse and worse forever. At a particularly despondent time in 2017, a video unexpectedly popped up which would turn the course of her life. She stayed up all night learning about Intermittent Fasting, and started that very next morning. Within days of eating in this newfound pattern of time, the fog lifted and she felt awake and “like herself.” With health, strength, and slender weight restored – 50+ pounds lost --at 58-years old she is vibrantly alive in her Intermittent Fasting lifestyle. Welcome back to the podcast! In today's episode, Chantel got to speak with returning guest Lisa Fischer! From an early age at a pre-school in Roselle Park, NJ, to being suspended twice from her high school in southeast Arkansas for various talking infractions, she has always been known for her gift of gab. The serendipitous event of her high school was being named “Most Talkative” which is a title that's since been retired. Well, the school burned down shortly after her younger brother graduated. We are still unsure of any connection. In between cities, she was somehow put into a middle school cafeteria that prohibited talking during the lunch hour. We assume those administrators in Gretna, La., hated children. Lisa started to realize in college where she emceed the pep rallies at the University of Arkansas and where she was a spokesman for her sorority, the founding chapter of Chi Omega, that her journalism degree could help her use even more words! She graduated with a journalism/public relations/advertising degree, and her goal was to chat it up, whether on TV, radio or in print. For her, she was able to do it all. Lisa first entered broadcasting as a desk assistant at the ABC affiliate in Little Rock, Ark. That stint lasted less than a year as the station experienced budget cuts, and somehow her merely-more-than-minimum-wage-job was eliminated. That's when a local news/talk radio station asked if she wanted to host her very own radio show. At 23! The answer was yes and hosting an afternoon talk show on an AM station in the 80s when there were no cell phones or internet access which made perfect sense to her to blather about nothing. She also hosted a TV segment on the local NBC affiliate as well as being a part-time entertainment reporter. In the late 80s, she married the love of her life and had three children, and she decided to stay home with her children and leave broadcasting behind (or so she thought) to homeschool her children. That lasted from 1993-2006 when she was asked to fill-in on radio station, B98.5 in Little Rock, for a few days, and she came home with a two-year contract. She retired from morning radio in June 2018. Lisa is host of the Lisa Fischer Said podcast available wherever you get your podcasts along with a podcast focused on "everything and absolutely nothing at the same time." It's with her longtime friend and designer Larry West Jr. It's called, wait for it, The Lisa and Larry Show. Available where you get your podcasts. Lisa is in her 36th year as a journalist in Arkansas. She is also a TV pitchman for home improvement clients across the country. She is a book author (more on that another time)/copy editor, a future YouTube sensation and now a certified integrative nutrition health coach as a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Her passion is to help women live healthier lives with fewer medications and more vitality with less body weight, too! She has been successfully intermittent fasting since 2017. I have been married for almost twenty years to a wonderful, kind-hearted man of German/Italian descent and we have three teenage kids: two daughters and a son. A few of my favorite pastimes are gardening, photography, traveling, flower arranging, taking walks in nature, reading, learning foreign languages, and just spending time with my family. I have also always loved cooking and for a few years was an avid baker and cake decorator too. Being a true foodie at heart and preparing and indulging in decadent meals and desserts all the time, weight management was always an issue for me. Considering I am only five feet tall, I don't have the luxury of carrying a lot of weight without it "showing" easily. To put it shortly, trying to become fit was a major struggle. I also told myself I loved food too much to be able to lose any weight and keep it off long term. Additionally, being pregnant three times within five years and not fully getting rid of the "baby weight" three times in a row compounded my weight problem. Eventually, I managed to reach obesity by the age of 43. I had given up trying, I didn't even own a scale anymore and had no clue what I weighed. I knew, however, that my clothing size had been steadily climbing up: from 6 to 8, to 10, to 12, reaching 14 in the summer of 2019. Then, that Christmas I ended up having to visit an orthopedist for a frozen shoulder and needed to be weighed in the doctor's office. I was shocked to find out I had reached 172lbs! I was heavier than my six-foot husband who weighed 168lbs at the time. At that moment, I knew I had to do something, soon. I happened to mention my health concerns with a family member over the Christmas holidays and he shared that he had done intermittent fasting that same year. He had successfully lost 35lbs doing IF and suggested I try it out too. I was intrigued. I had free time because I was on winter break from school, so I spent a few days watching YouTube videos on intermittent fasting, researching as much as I could, and decided to give it a try and see how it goes for me. So on January 1st, 2020 I began following a 16:8 IF protocol, eating two meals and a snack between 11AM and 6PM. The rest of the time, I drank different kinds of herbal and fruit teas and water. I April, I read "Delay, Don't Deny" by Gin Stephens and learned about the clean fast, as well as different IF protocols. I switched to strictly black or green tea, which are clean fast approved, and transitioned to a one meal a day lifestyle. I also began to really appreciate food as fuel for my body and started turning my OMAD into a special occasion that is rich in nutrients and a delight for all the senses. By October of that year I had lost 55lbs and have been maintaining that weight loss for over 15 months now. IF has truly been life changing for me! I get lots of questions asked by clients on how to close their eating window more easily before starting their fast. I think this comes up a lot because we may have had enough to eat, we are satiated and yet the urge or desire to keep eating occurs. And often we give into that urge and now we've eaten more than our bodies need. So what can we do to make the closing of our eating window feel easier so we get in the habit of it and we can reap the benefits of fasting that we are trying to get? Take a listen as that's what we talk about in this episode! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/heather-heynen/support

One of my client's asked me how she would lose the visceral belly fat around her midsection and stomach and, while we know we can't specifically target fat loss in a certain area of the body, there are a few principles that will allow us to lose that belly fat and get back to the figure we want. SummaryGoing without food for longer may seem a difficult step to take to manage your body weight or your health! Especially if you love good food, as we do on the Fit to Succeed show! In this episode, we investigate the very popular trend of intermittent fasting with leading women's health coach, Laurie Lewis. We discuss how to apply a fasting approach, in easy-to-take, comfortable steps and benefit from Laurie's years of experience and her supportive coaching methods and tips. Guest biographyFor Intermittent Fasting Coach and Author, Laurie Lewis, menopause dealt a crushing blow - brain fog, lack of balance, memory loss, and the rapid gain of 50 pounds of stubborn body fat. She tried everything she knew to feel better, and the methods that worked in the past made no difference. After four years of struggle, Laurie stumbled upon Intermittent Fasting and started fasting that very same day. The menopausal fog lifted in less than one week, she had more energy and felt more “like herself.” She lost 51 pounds in 15 months and has kept it off for years! Time has passed and Laurie has turned her personal success into a thriving Intermittent Fasting coaching business. As a certified health coach, from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Laurie guides her clients to eat great food, take a pause, and enjoy life feeling vibrantly well.Episode contentWe have addressed the science of time-restricted feeding and intermittent fasting previously in episode 43 with Danny Lennon. We enjoy getting into the scientific details, but it is also necessary to step back and consider the more practical application and impact of diet and behaviour change. In this interview, the intention was to provide the perspective of the nutrition/health coach and how to apply intermittent fasting in real-world circumstances. 2:44 Why intermittent fasting is an interesting topic for this episode4:12 Why Laurie chose to use intermittent fasting in her own life9:30 Going without food for longer periods of time does carry a certain appeal11:28 Fasting as a spiritual practice and its potential physical health benefits16:22 Extending the 'default' nightly fast from 7 - 8 hours up to 12 hours21:24 A fasting approach may actually be liberating and is individually adaptable30:20 The concept of applying fasting window 'guard rails' 32:44 Applying a 'clean' fast33:58 Intermittent fasting benefits specific to women40:01 Does intermittent fasting benefit weight loss beyond calorie reduction?Rate the showIf you enjoyed this episode, then please rate and review the show. In this podcast, Dr. Berg talks about what snacks you can eat during your eating window when doing intermittent fasting. Eating window is a time period between your meals. The ideal fasting pattern is to only have two meals with no snacks in the eating window. If you eat carbohydrates and too much protein in your eating window, it can spike insulin and could possible mess you up. Eating in general could spike insulin while fat has the less effect to insulin in the body. If you are going to snack in your eating window, either consume just fat or fiber(leafy greens). Wonder about intermittent fasting and exercise ? This is for you. Today’s question about intermittent fasting from Elizabeth “I get the 16/8 thing, but can I drink coffee before my fast ends? What about matcha latte with coconut milk? I’d be fine to exercise fasted if I could do a pre-workout matcha latte. Can I/should I intermittent fast every day or how often? Should I try to fit 3 meals into the 8-hour eating window? She goes on to say, I’m thinking I should because with just 2 meals I’m pretty sure I’d be quite hungry.” Points in this episode: Fasting and eating The 16:8 she’s referring to is 16 hours of fasting and an 8-hour eating window. For example, you could eat dinner by 6pm and eat breakfast at 10am. What I’ve been doing is eating closer to 11am and having dinner around 5 on most days, that’s not always possible. Breaking fast Anything with calories, or otherwise changes your blood sugar, breaks your fast so technically a matcha latte with coconut milk is breaking fast. Combining keto However, if you’re seeking fat burning, the next closest thing is to remain ketogenic by having high fat and not carb. You’d be doing that with the coconut milk latte as long as you don’t sweeten it. The question of three meals is one you’ll have to assess yourself. You also want to prioritize your goals for fasting. More on that in a minute. The goal is not restricted eating during your window, but if you have adequate protein and fiber within your window you may find you’re less hungry than you anticipate. Cravings seem to disappear not increase for people who fast. You want the highest quality foods all the time. A forever practice The 16:8 is a fairly easy fasting practice for many. So doing it most days is fine… as long as it’s working. You only know by monitoring weight, body composition, energy, other intangibles like sleep, skin. Activity needs If you are being active for good health intermittent fasting regularly can work wonderfully. If you’re an athlete who trains or is an exercise enthusiast, you may need to fuel around your workouts carefully, so you don’t lose muscle mass. Intermittent fasting and exercise can co-exist as long as you plan and monitor carefully. Monitor muscle and fat Track your progress during workouts – you don’t ever want to be doing random workouts. There should be some level of assessing from one week to the next, the weight you lifted, the number of repetitions you were able to do, the speed or distance you were able to reach or the difficulty of the same measurable exercise. If you find you’re not able to exert as much and you’re not expending as much energy, the quality of exercise is suffering. You want to reconsider the timing of your fasting and exercise. Make it Right Fasting has such a wide continuum and done wrong can backfire on a woman in menopause already under stress and at risk for loss of muscle and bone. Done properly with a plan to change and monitor your personal plan as needed it can be an amazing health & longevity tool. If you have a history of chronic dieting, disordered eating, over exercise, body image challenges, proceed with caution. I don’t recommend intermittent fasting for anyone with disordered eating history. Become a fat burner Fasting can be a good time to shift from being a sugar burner to a fat burner with lower intensity exercise. Gradually you increase your level of intensity while fasting. The body naturally wants to burn carbohydrates. This shift takes time. And there’s never been a better time while you’re quarantined. If you’d like to talk about a “Fast Flip” opportunity available right now for a limited number of women. You can work with me on your own fast + exercise for 12 weeks… respond now before spots are taken. This is usually reserved for current program participants and coaching clients. I’m opening up a limited number of spots for others right now. There’s never been a better time to work on your health habits, including intermittent fasting and exercise. FAST FLIP Once these spots are gone they’re gone. Check show notes at flippingfifty.com/fast-flip for the order link. I’ll remove this offer when spots are taken. The last time I did this… we sold out in less than 24 hours. If you don’t see the link I’m out of time. If you want a little support working on your intermittent fasting and exercise this is perfect timing.

Does it matter if people eat early or eat late? Does it matter when they’re fasting windows are? Could they eat in the morning and then fast and not eat dinner? I think that it's really important to kind of change it up, like I said, every once in a while I'll have breakfast and lunch. Sometimes I'll have lunch and dinner. I think it's important to kind of mix it up a little bit, to kind of give your body and sometimes throw in some eight-hour. If you're used to doing eight-hour fast, sometimes do an eight hour fast, then turn it around and do a one hour fast- by that I mean, a one-hour eating window, a 24 hour fast. So just kind of really changing it up, I think works really well if you're trying to lose weight. So I guess the biggest thing is what's your goal? Are you trying to lose weight? Are you trying to have autophagy or trying to heal your body? But I still think about changing it up every once in a while. It's kind of like going to the gym. If you go to the gym and you're doing the exact same thing all the time, your body gets used to it. We both have planning on the brain this week and talk about Proactive Mode vs. Reactive Mode when it comes to our diets, businesses, and life. John has already had a morning! And he even has a realization halfway through the episode and remembers to breathe. He also wants to create a #Lifing Toolbox. Emily changes her schedule and has some adjusting to do. This may or may not be affecting her weight. We’ll see! We also talk a lot about the importance of planning, including how we plan. Emily walks us through her weekly and daily planning and journaling routine, as well. “I can’t wait to miss my kids!” — Emily New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re subscribed so you’ll never miss an episode and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 Meet Your Hosts: John Bukenas is a podcast editor from New Jersey. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. Emily Prokop is a podcast editor and consultant from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: John has already had a morning! John has adjusted his Eating Window for his Intermittent Fasting to One Meal a Day. Emily’s tip: Follow hashtags for the diet you’re doing on Instagram and Twitter so you get inspiration throughout the day. We can’t do math on a podcast! Our usual joke is 2+2=Chicken (Emily wants you to know she was once a math tutor, she swears!) What is your moment of #ImNotEvenSorry? Post it in the group or tag us if you’re following us on social media. John realizes he’s in Reactive Mode all the time! If you’re reading this, take a deep breath! It’ll feel good, we promise ;) We start talking about how we organize ourselves during the day. Emily is very Writey-Downey, are you? We know we do so much better when we set up a plan, even if we end up having to throw it out the window if something happens. John walks us through how his brain lies to him — can you relate? We talk a lot about planning in this episode and different methods, including writing things down and a deep look at Emily’s weekly and daily writing/planning routines. “Limited Time” gets us every time! Emily has realized that her toddler turns her brain to mush by the end of the day and has to adjust her whole schedule. Emily’s porn is counting down to when preschool begins, for sure. She’s going to bed earlier and waking up earlier, when she can have time to herself to plan before anyone wakes up and puts her in reactive mode. We both realize we need to find a release that’s not food. John needs a Lifing Toolbox! 33:06 Emily breaks down her morning pages and how she plans her day. (Thanks for the question, Craig!) She starts with Morning Pages: 3 pages of freewriting, from the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron; Then she does a to-do list in a bullet journal style, but separates it into three sections: Self-Care, Work, and Home & Family. Thanks to the Business Fabulous Podcast for giving me the idea to put stickers in my notebook! - Emily Emily can’t wait to miss her kids! We have some AMAZING #WinningWednesday posts! Please note I made a mistake in this episode...I say at one point that cruciferous veggies like cabbage and broccoli reduce excess testosterone. I meant they reduce excess estrogen! :)
Should you focus on the length of the fasting period or the food in the eating window for weight loss? Does longer always mean better weight loss? Should you eat differently if you have a short fast or a long fast? Donna Reish, Intermittent Fasting teacher, blogger, weight loss coach, and curriuculum author, answers these and many other questions in this broadcast. She begins with the "Is IF magic" question. Then she uses graphics to show four main ways we lose weight, inches, and cravings through IF. Then she turns her attention to various fasting hours--and their effect on the foods and weight loss. These include 16:8; 18:6; 19:5; 20:4; 21:3; and more. Join Donna's monthly IF course to begin fasting incrementally with daily video training and lots of hand holding! intermittentfastingcourse.com

Amazing things happen in our body, including with our hormones and testosterone, when we give our body a bit of a break from eating. Listen to today's episode as we discuss the why and how of daily intermittent fasting.

Episode 2O In simpler terms: it's making a conscious decision to skip certain meals on purpose. By fasting and then feasting on purpose, intermittent fasting generally means that you consume your calories during a specific window of the day, and choose not to eat food for a larger window of time. Intermittent Fasting (IF) is where each day has an Eating Window and a Fasting Window. Practically, IF has a standard format called the 16:8 model where you fast for 16 hours and eat within 8 hours. I have followed this model for 3+ years. Each day, I eat between ~12pm and ~8pm, and I am in a fasted state from ~8pm to ~12pm the following day. My approach is that I stop eating by 8pm each day, skipping breakfast the next day, and starting each day with lunch. This episode gives you the gist of Intermittent Fasting's many benefits, and how to get started if you want to try it yourself.
Happy Thursday and welcome back to another episode of Waist Away: The Intermittent Fasting Podcast! Usually, we record at the Chantel Ray Headquarters, but today we took a little trip to one of our local radio stations! Of course, we are still going to be answering YOUR questions, but Nick is going to act as an MC for this episode! We have lots to get through, so let's get started! Watch the Video Version: https://youtu.be/2E14zlOdArY QUESTIONS: Jenny Illinois - 2:11 I started toying around with intermittent fasting a few weeks ago. I bought Chantel's book which I read on vacation with my family. We traveled overseas, I didn’t practice IF instead I at a decent sized breakfast. Generally, I wasn’t hungry for lunch and I snacked somedays. Most days I didn’t eat again until I was hungry, which was usually around supper time. What I'm getting at is I didn’t eat “healthy” but I only at when I was hungry. I came home to my surprise and LOST over 4 pounds. Since I've been home I've been following a 6-hour window and in 1 week I've seen no change. I might have actually gained weight. It's frustrating, but I'm hoping it will whoosh away. Any suggestions or am I doing something wrong? Kat Mobile - 5:40 I'm brand new to IF and I started 2 weeks ago eating in an 8-hour window, but I've wanted to bring it down to a smaller window. Do you have any tips for the best way that I can bring my window down? Angela Northern Virginia - 7:02 I loved your podcast you did with Jenn Vann Horne and watching your adventure at Whole Foods. You talked a lot about the benefits of cilantro, but I cant take the taste because it tastes like soup. Do you have any suggestions on how I should prepare it so I can actually enjoy it?? Jessica Boston - 8:40 Like a lot of people, I grew up hearing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I workout early and I love breakfast food! Is there anything wrong with me eating breakfast and lunch but just skipping dinner? Kevin - 11:08 I've been hearing about ketosis and I really want to get into the fat burning state when my body is eating fast for fuel like you talk about. I know you don't recommend the keto diet, but I am so intrigued by the benefits and I'm tempted to give it a try. Can I get into ketosis and become a fat burner without following the Keto diet. --------------------------------------- To learn more about the principles of intermittent fasting, purchase Chantel's book, Waist Away: The Chantel Ray Way NOW by visiting http://amzn.to/2CVmTgs YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCteFjiVaY6n0SOAixcyZbWA Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheChantelRayWay Things we love: https://chantelrayway.com/things-i-love-2/ Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheChantelRayWay

Check out http://donnareish.com/intermittent-fasting-journal-week-7 for the shownotes for this episode! Donna Reish, author of "Fasting Inferno" parody on Youtube and blogger at DonnaReish.com, describes her seventh week of Daily Intermittent Fasting in this video/podcast. Donna describes her 19 hour daily fasting windows, adapting Daily IF to holidays and special days, using an app for tracking fasting hours (and for motivation!), and much more. She details four techniques that she uses to keep motivation during the fasting window: (1) Looking at/calculating with an app; (2) Performing physical actions of closing, opening, and locking a window; (3) Tooth brushing; and (4) Changing food associations with verbal cues. Donna continues in her "what I learned" section to teach listeners how to divide the OMAD (one meal a day) eating window into three parts for more self control and how to experience Appetite Correction.
