In 2015, I suffered from poor Type 1 diabetes control which lead me to become legally blind for almost a year. The doctors didn't give me much hope, predicting an 80% chance that I would never see again. But I refused to give up and changed my lifestyle drastically. Through sheer willpower (and an amazing eye surgeon) I beat the odds and regained my vision. During that difficult time, I couldn't read or write, which was devastating as they had always been a source of comfort for me since childhood. However, my wife took me to the local library where she read out the titles of audiobooks to me. I selected some of my favorite books, such as the Disc World series, Name of the Wind, Harry Potter, and more, and the audiobooks brought these stories to life in a way I had never experienced before. They helped me through the darkest period of my life and I fell in love with audiobooks. Once I regained my vision, I decided to pursue a career as an audiobook narrator instead of a writer. That's why I created Tall Tale TV, to support aspiring authors in the writing communities that I had grown to love before my ordeal. My goal was to help them promote their work by providing a promotional audio short story that showcases their writing skills to readers. They say the strongest form of advertising is word of mouth, so I offer a platform for readers to share these videos and help spread the word about these talented writers. Please consider sharing these stories with your friends and family to support these amazing authors. A federal court in Texas has ordered a public library system to put back into circulation over a dozen books that were removed from the shelves. The books, which covered issues relating to LGBTQ+ and racism, had been pulled by the library. Library patrons sued, alleging that the books had been removed due to disagreement with their viewpoint. The patrons also claimed that the library had closed board meetings to the public and replaced its advisory board with community members who supported censorship. The judge granted the patrons' request for a preliminary injunction, which also stops the library from removing any more books while the lawsuit is pending. The case comes at a time of increasing school book bans. PEN America has documented nearly 2,532 school book bans affecting 1,648 titles from July 2021 to June 2022, with most of the challenged books addressing LGBTQ+ issues or systemic racism. The books in question include "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent" by Pulitzer winner Isabel Wilkerson and "Being Jazz: My Life as a (Transgender) Teen" by Jazz Jennings.Texas Library System Must Return Removed Books to CirculationJohnson & Johnson has agreed to pay $8.9bn to settle all the lawsuits relating to its talc-based powders causing cancer. The payment is aimed at settling claims from about 60,000 claimants, and the company has withdrawn its talc-based baby powder, Shower to Shower and other such products from the market. The world's largest healthcare products company hopes to fund a trust set up in US bankruptcy court in Trenton, New Jersey, to cover future claims. Monies in the settlement will be paid out over 25 years. Traces of asbestos have been blamed for causing ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, specifically tied to asbestos exposure. Women and men have been blaming the company for causing these diseases, and internal J&J documents dating back to the early 1970s show workers warning managers about traces of asbestos found in talc bottled for baby powder.J&J to Pay $8.9 Billion to Settle Talc-Cancer Lawsuits (2)The IRS will release its plan for spending its $80 billion in multiyear funds later this week, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel. The plan will focus on improving online interactions between taxpayers and the agency, shortening lengthy phone wait times, and providing in-person assistance to taxpayers. The IRS also plans to hire and train employees to audit returns of high-income taxpayers, large corporations, and partnerships. The goal is to make real-world improvements and investments in technology that can digitize IRS processes and strengthen enforcement against corporations and high-income individuals.IRS Plan for $80 Billion Coming This Week, Yellen Says (1)The Law School Admission Test (LSAT) will be available for test takers to take at home or at a testing center starting from August. The LSAT was moved exclusively online in May 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions on in-person gatherings. The Law School Admission Council, which designs and administers the LSAT, partnered with Prometric Testing to provide test sites around the globe. Although most test takers will have a choice, some prefer the in-person experience to the challenges of at-home testing, including unreliable internet connections, multiple roommates, and noisy conditions.Online? In-person? LSAT takers will soon have a choice | ReutersAnd, finally, giving you ample opportunity to completely bail on this last story if you've had about enough Donald Trump news. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's indictment of former President Donald Trump on hush money charges related to a 2016 election scandal brought few new details about the case. Bragg accused Trump of falsifying records in his real estate company's books to conceal reimbursing his personal lawyer Michael Cohen for a $130,000 hush money payment. The payment was made to a woman who alleged she had an affair with Trump. Although it is the first time a former US president has faced criminal charges, legal experts not involved with the case say its strength will likely depend on evidence that has not been made public. The indictment did not specify the crimes that were allegedly being concealed. Meanwhile, prosecutors detailed similar schemes Trump allegedly orchestrated to silence two other people who had damaging information about him in a separate filing. Experts said this could help Bragg's office demonstrate to a jury that Trump intended to commit a crime. Cohen, who testified before the grand jury that indicted the former president, has previously pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations for the Daniels payment, which could leave him open to attacks on his credibility by Trump's defense at trial.Analysis: Trump indictment on hush money charges brings few new facts | Reutershttps://law-and-politics.online/@Teri_Kanefield/110143334776123102The People of New York v. Julie has noticed that in most cultures, older people get treated with a lot of deference and respect while little kids are ignored… In the United States we have precisely inverted that.  Topics include: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman imprisons Twitter dissidents; India tries to police religious conversions; one of the US's largest grid operators released a report about the power supply and demand through 2030 across the 13 states in its territory covering 65M people. It said that fossil fuel power plants are retiring much faster than renewable sources are getting development which could lead to energy “imbalances.” Julie's article: Wake Up America: Soon Is the Winter of Our Discontent https://www.theepochtimes.com/wake-up-america-soon-is-the-winter-of-our-discontent_4847450.html See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

As part of our extended Veteran's Day of Our Discontent celebration (er, we'll call it that, sure), Joy sits down with fellow writer, musician, and veteran Rosa del Duca to discuss the various strategies they have both undertaken to unfuck their minds from the Army's fuckery. As a conscientious objector, Rosa's journey through the star spangled unlearning is an especially enlightening and inspiring one. Stay tuned after the convo to discover the reason for Sarah's mysterious absence, hear the gals try some “light banter” (goes about as well as you'd expect), and come up with a million dollar Kickstarter idea. Well, technically, Frank Herbert came up with the actual idea in Dune but we came up with the idea to crowdfund it -- and, no, it's not the spice melange. But, if anyone has the spice hookup, hit us up. Featured songs are: “Orion,” “Painting the Roses Red,” and “White Lies” by Hunters, courtesy of the artist. This thoughtful talk  by Harvey Harrison explores the work of Isabel Wilkerson and her book Caste - The Origins of Our Discontent. Ms. Wilkerson uses the framework of this Caste system, deeply imbedded in our institutions and in all of us, to describe how systemic racism in our country is maintained. She uses the history and the current status of the Caste system in India, the Caste system in the United States, and the United States Caste System as it was utilized in Nazi Germany as a powerful mirror on how we continue to suppress people in our country based on the color of their skin and their perceived race.Support the show (https://pushpay.com/g/firstunitarianchurchdesmoines?src=hpp)

Pulitzer Prize-winner Isabel Wilkerson, the acclaimed bestselling author of “The Warmth of Other Suns,” reveals how America has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings and divisions, in her deeply researched and immersive new narrative “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent.” Drawing parallels between the caste systems of America, India, and Nazi Germany, Wilkerson outlines a revolutionary framework for understanding how caste plays out across civilizations, both historically and today. Backed by years of research, she identifies eight ideological pillars that underlie all caste systems. Using riveting stories from the lives of Martin Luther King Jr., baseball's Satchel Paige, an ordinary single father and his toddler son, and many others, Wilkerson shows how the insidious undertow of caste is experienced by each of us every day. Starring in CBS All Access “Star Trek: Discovery,” Wilson says he feels deeply about all the horrific, global news, including the pandemic; a contentious election and the racist divide in the U.S. and elsewhere. He’s terrified that the country will take a hard-right turn and, is exhausted by all the emotions stirred up by our shared experiences. Wilson is enthusiastic about the book, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent, which he says puts our country’s race relations in an historical and socio-political perspective. Despite the book’s sometimes grim contents, he still feels hopeful. All three guys believe agree that most individuals are good, but they see themselves as part of an enlightened group that needs to speak out about injustice. They are dealing with their own uncertainty fatigue by finding hope and acknowledging that certainty is an illusion. Wilson says that he’s used his time to consider his life and think about changes he needs to make. Anyone exhausted by despair of our precarious world, will find common ground and hope in this emotion-packed episode. 12/19/19: A CHAOSMAS CAROL - THE TALE OF EBENEEZER SCREWED Last night, a historic House vote made Trump only the third president in US history to be impeached. Most Americans are angry that the Democrat road rage has wasted our money on this fiasco. This move adds more fuel to the Winter of Our Discontent and certainly signals the further move towards a civil schism that may lead to war. On tonight's show, Clyde Lewis talks about A CHAOSMAS CAROL - THE TALE OF EBENEEZER SCREWED.

Nothing to complain about much here except CBS All Access and their piss poor streaming capabilities. My first request is for book recommendations for the two girls who I will be taking care of. I would like to bring them something when I arrive (a shameless bribe) and books are easy to transport. The older one is 10 and is an avid reader and has read the first Harry Potter book in English. She had some struggles, but reads about the same as an American 10 year old. I'd love to get her a chapter book so I can help out with her reading and so she can feel super accomplished. She's a huge Harry Potter fan and also likes graphic novels. The younger girl is almost 9 and reads more like a first grader. She is not a reader but will sometimes pick up graphic novels. I'd love to find something cool to strike up her interest in learning English since according to her mother and previous au pairs, she understands spoken English, but has a tough time reading and speaking it. She is much more active and likes sports and board games. My second request should be easy. I'd love some books to get me psyched up for the big move. Ideally, a fish out of water story set in Paris, either fiction or non fiction is fine. I loved Paris for One and Bringing Up Bebe and Me Talk Pretty One Day. I found Paris to the Moon a little tedious and My Life in France is already on my list. My favorite books are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Station Eleven and The Bone Clocks. Thanks! --Jennie   2. Hi Jenn and Amanda! Love this show so much, my TBR grows exponentially after each episode. I'm looking for some book recommendations for my younger sister, who is a bit of a reluctant reader but would like to read more because when she finds a book she she genuinely loves, she can't put it down or stop talking about it and I want to help nurture her inner book nerd. She likes historical fiction, and in particular books that follow a woman's life over a long period of time. She prefers books set far in the past, like 300 years plus to ancient history, and has expressed that she would like books that deal less with "mainstream western history." Two books she has really loved are The Red Tent by Anita Diamant and The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, and we both loved chatting about these books together. I'd love to pass along some more similar suggestions to her so we can do sister read-a-longs and book chats. Thanks so very much! --Kate   3. Hello Get Booked, I've just finished the latest entry in Kristin Britain's Green Rider series and now have 3-4 long years to wait for the next one. I'm wondering if you can recommend me some 'woman goes on a quest/journey through a fantasy land' books to make the wait easier. (While I don't mind a bit of pain and suffering on the way, I'm not a fan of relentlessy grim stories.) I've already read everything by: Robin McKinley Tamora Pierce Tanya Huff Thanks in advance. --Marie   4. Hey ladies! I'm looking for fiction (or even nonfiction) recommendations for books involving scientists and adventure. I've read The Signature of All Things, and The Lost City of Z, I really enjoyed both of those. I have also read The Unseen World, books similar to that are also welcome. I love science and history so anything historical is also a bonus. Thanks so much, I love the podcast! --Kristy   5. My older brother is an enthusiastic reader and I read all the time. He still lives in our hometown in rural Wisconsin and I live in Boston. We've recently started building an adult relationship by talking about books. I want to introduce him to more diverse books. My brother's favorite books are To Kill a Mockingbird and Lonesome Dove, we read The Winter of Our Discontent together and he loved it. He takes his time reading, so it has to be something that will keep him interested over time. I want to expose him to more women/poc authors without alienating him. --Sarah   6. Hello Amanda and Jenn, I have always really enjoyed reading aloud (that is, as an adult reading aloud to other adults). With my parents, I have read the entire Harry Potter series and many Jasper Fforde books and found them especially enjoyable to share because of the cleverness and humor. However, I am now in a relationship with a man who not really a book person (and, yes, it took a lot for me to trust a man with no bookshelves in his home). He has indulged my interest in reading to him, but we have not found many books that appeal to him. We enjoyed The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd (one of my absolute favorites since I attended art school) and Daisy Fay and The Miracle Man by Fannie Flagg. I wanted to revisit Jasper Fforde with him but he is vehemently opposed to all things fantasy/sci fi (even magical realism). Any suggestions for books that would have that kind of smart Jasper Fforde humor but be more grounded in the real world? I actually submitted this request close to a year ago and (unless I missed it somehow), it has not appeared on the show. In that time, the relationship I mentioned has turned into an engagement. So, as I look forward to spending the rest of my life with this non-reader, I would really appreciate some brilliant inspirations for read-alouds that will help me share my love of books with him. Thanks, --Sasha   7. Hello Amanda and Jenn! I recently read Malinche by Laura Esquivel and, while I wasn't actually a big fan of it (her writing style just didn't do it for me), it left me hungry for more historical fiction that takes place in Mexico and Central America. I would love books that are Pre-Columbian, preferably written by people who are Latinx, and where the place/culture is a character. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! --Heidi   8. I recently finished an advanced degree and am starting my own business. Thanks to some major hits to my self-confidence and some pretty significant imposter syndrome, I'm finding myself hesitant to move forward. I need to feel inspired and need a major confidence boost--but I can't stand self-help books or anything that sounds like a self-help book. They make me roll my eyes and sometimes get thrown in disgust. I need to be inspired, not just told I should be inspired or fed a bunch of woo-woo bs. I hated Eat, Pray, Love with a passion hotter than a thousand suns, if that helps (and side note: I'm always glad to find those who felt the same way since at the time everyone else loved it). I'm open to fiction or non-fiction. Please help me find something to distract me from wondering who in the hell actually gave me me a law degree & licence and that will make me feel worthy. Thanks! A Delectable Education Charlotte Mason Podcast

In this week's podcast, we discuss why Shakespeare was always included in Charlotte Mason's curriculum. What is the value of Shakespeare as part of the study of literature, and how can we who have little experience with his works enter in and enjoy his feast? Listen Now: If you are seeing this message, please make sure you are using the most current version of your web browser: Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Chrome "Just as we partake of that banquet which is 'Shakespeare' according to our own needs and desires, so do the children behave at the ample board set before them; there is enough to satisfy the keenest intelligence while the dullest child is sustained through his own willing effort." (Vol. 6, p. 245) "We probably read Shakespeare in the first place for his stories, afterwards for his characters, the multitude of delightful persons with whom he makes us so intimate that afterwards, in fiction or in fact, we say, 'She is another Jessica,' and 'That dear girl is a Miranda'; 'She is a Cordelia to her father,' and, such a figure in history, 'a base lago.' To become intimate with Shakespeare in this way is a great enrichment of mind and instruction of conscience. Then, by degrees, as we go on reading this world-teacher, lines of insight and beauty take possession of us, and unconsciously mould our judgments of men and things and of the great issues of life." (Vol. 4, p. 72) "This is what Shakespeare, as great a philosopher as a poet, set himself to teach us, line upon line, precept upon precept. His 'Leontes,' 'Othello,' 'Lear,' 'Prospero,' 'Brutus,' preach on the one text––that a man's reason brings certain infallible proofs of any notions he has wilfully chosen to take up. There is no escape for us, no short cut; art is long, especially the art of living." (Vol. 6, pp. 314-15) "And Shakespeare? He, indeed, is not to be classed, and timed, and treated as one amongst others,––he, who might well be the daily bread of the intellectual life; Shakespeare is not to be studied in a year; he is to be read continuously throughout life, from ten years old and onwards. But a child of ten cannot understand Shakespeare. No; but can a man of fifty? Is not our great poet rather an ample feast of which every one takes according to his needs, and leaves what he has no stomach for?" If you're looking for fast-paced thrillers with well-rounded characters and plenty of chills, look no further. Peg Brantley delivers. We talk about the inspiration for Red Tide; culture and vulnerable populations in The Missings; her most recent novel, The Sacrifice; and what she admires about her characters.  Also, she gives a shout-out to two books: - A debut cozy getting great buzz, Cynthia Kuhn's The Semester of Our Discontent, and - A WWII novel, Between Shades of Gray, by Ruta Sepetys.  Her next novel, Trafficked, is due out this fall. It centers on human trafficking -- the same topic I discussed when chatting with Désirée Zamorano, author of Human Cargo, if you'd like to check out our conversation. Don't forget, if you want a chance to win April's bundle of books -- thriller All In (signed by author Lisa Klink), noir Dead Soon Enough by Steph Cha; and cozy The Diva Steals a Chocolate Kiss by Krista Davis, along with a $10 Amazon gift card, sign up for the monthly newsletter in the boxes on the right. If you'd rather read than listen, here's the transcript. Enjoy! Peg Brantley Transcript Welcome to Destination Mystery, a podcast for readers who love a good mystery. My guest today is thriller writer Peg Brantley. It’s no accident Peg Brantley’s thrillers feel so terrifyingly real. She immerses herself in research, interviewing crime scene investigators, FBI agents, and human trafficking experts, and studying topics as diverse as arson dogs and Santeria. She’s gone through the citizen’s police academy and obtained her concealed carry permit, all in an attempt to bring realism to her stories. Her third novel, The Sacrifice, was a finalist for two Colorado literary awards. She’s currently working on her fourth novel, the second in the Mex Anderson series. Laura Brennan: Peg, thank you so much for joining me. Peg Brantley: Thank you for asking me. LB: Tell me a little bit about yourself. How did you get started writing? PB: My bonus son had a heart attack when he was 40, no 39 years old, and we moved him home with us. And I lost track of everything else that was going on in my life. I was paying attention to him. And after about a year and a half of that I decided, you know I've always wanted to write a book, and I'm home all day. Why not? So it was out of his tragedy, family tragedy, that got my heart where it needed to be. LB: Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry to hear that. PB: He's doing well now, by the way. LB: That is, that was the question. So your son came home and you had to take care of him and you ended up writing as something for yourself, within that. PB: Yeah. LB: You know, I find that really interesting because family relationships are such a big part of all of your novels. Are you close your family in general? PB: Yes. Yeah, I really am. You know, I was estranged from my mom for a number of years but thankfully before she died we were able to reconnect and take care of everything. I just think that part of who makes each one of us who we are, are the family dynamics and the relationships that we have with other people. And I try to have my characters be at least a little well-rounded where those are concerned. LB: Family dynamics and family secrets play a big role. So I'm not gonna pry into your family secrets. Tell me about the inspiration for Red Tide. PB: I read an article about a man who died in prison. And he left behind a photograph. And the question was, why this photograph? It wasn't person, it wasn't a place, it wasn’t an event -- well, it was a place. It was a field, just a field with trees around it. But he kept that photograph. And people said, well, there can’t be any special reason for him keeping that photograph. And I thought, well, what if there was a special reason? And it turns out that that is the dumping ground for bodies. LB: Is that what led you, then, to your heroine's job as a body retrieval specialist?

In episode thirteen we gather together three old friends from the San Francisco comedy scene, Sammy Obeid, Casey Ley, and Kevin Camia, and they recommend three very different but equally fascinating books. We start with a book Kevin Camia enjoyed so much he almost finished it, the controversial nonfiction best seller 40 Million Dollar Slaves by William C. Rhoden. This 2007 book combines a potent history of black athletes in professional athletics, with provocative theories about the modern professional sports industry. Next, Casey Ley brings us the brand new history book from Scott Anderson, Lawrence In Arabia, which sheds new light on the incredible real life of T.E. Lawrence, set amidst the historic backdrop of WWI. This book is a perfect compliment to last episode’s The Peace To End All Peace, treading the same historic ground but seen from a completely different perspective, and packed with tantalizing new information about what we thought was an old story. Finally, Sammy Obeid tells us about his experience reading John Steinbeck’s last novel The Winter of Our Discontent in high school, as well as some things he enjoyed more, such as Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park, and some things he enjoys less, such as math in movies. It all adds up to a really fun show! (See what I did there?) John Steinbeck began writing a novel in the summer of 1957 and abandoned it the day after Christmas. I was born 93 days later. Those two events were unconnected before today. Steinbeck wrote the first 114 pages of his novel before setting it aside. He had already completed 25 novels, including The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Of Mice and Men and Cannery Row. He was 55 years old. Steinbeck went on to publish The Winter of Our Discontent in 1961 and then Travels With Charley in 1962 and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature that same year. He died in 1968, having published nothing else. I was 10. “I think he got to a point where he felt he couldn't contribute anymore. And it was too heartbreaking to try. I mean, after awhile you get tired of being under attack. You've got to remember this was a man who had been under attack since he was a young man. He was under attack most of his life. When he wrote The Grapes of Wrath people thought he'd betrayed his own class.” – Thom Steinbeck, (John's son,) Sept. 2009 Thom went on to say his father was “a mythologist… He could take the broad myth and reduce it down to something you could understand and were living right next door to.” The novel John Steinbeck didn't finish was the story of an American who watched one too many westerns on television, then put on a cowboy hat and spurs and went out into the city to correct the injustices he saw all around him. In June, 2010, CBS News announced, “John Steinbeck Archive to be Auctioned. Never-Published Works Among Letters and Manuscripts from Nobel Prize Winner's NYC Apartment.” That CBS story included the following lines: “The writer [Steinbeck] had Ingrid Bergman in mind for Vikings, a film script adaptation of a Henrik Ibsen play that he began in 1954 but later abandoned, which Larson attributed to his restless nature and busy schedule. Another project that was later abandoned was a 1957 reworking of Don Quixote, which Steinbeck titled Don Keehan – The Marshal of Manchon. Bloomsbury's catalog says he had high hopes for it and even considered director Elia Kazan for a movie version with [Henry] Fonda in the lead.” Have you figured it out yet? I bought the unfinished manuscript. It sat a long while in a New York bank while they tried to figure out how to insure the manuscript and transport it. They already had my money so I told'em to just shove it into a UPS envelope. But they wouldn't hear of it. It finally arrived a few minutes ago. I got 6 pages into it, then set it aside just now to write you this note because a wild and funny thought barged into my head: Are you ready?  I'm going to finish it. “You're going to finish reading it?” No, I'm going to finish writing it. “What! Who do you think you are?” I think I'm a ridiculous, middle-aged man who believes it would be fun to write the back half of an unfinished Steinbeck novel. “Are you comparing yourself with John Steinbeck?” No. I just think it would be fun. I like to write and this is America and I bought the manuscript. “You won't be able to publish it.” I don't plan to publish it. “There are hundreds of writers more qualified than you to undertake such an important task.” They should have pooled their money and bought the manuscript. “People will be outraged.” Those people stay outraged anyway. “You should leave Don Keehan unfinished out of respect for John Steinbeck.” “I plan to finish it out of respect for John Steinbeck.” “Are you really going to do this?” Yes, I'm really going to do this. “Can I read it when you're done?” No. You're an obstructionist and a pest. Go away. Wizard Academy students and alumni will have access to Don Keehan, The Marshall of Manchon in the library tower where he will reside. Sorry, but I've got to run. I have more reading to do. Exactly108 more pages. Roy H....
