Technicians need proper training for safe and efficient blade repairs. This week we speak with Alex Fournier director of Composite Operations at Enertek, Alex brings insight on the spread certification process and how recent changes are enhancing safety. Efficiency for technicians working at Height. Speaker 2: Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining Light on Wind. Energy's brightest innovators. This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Alex, welcome to the program. Alex Fournier: Thank you guys for having me once again. Allen Hall: Yeah, we're glad to have you back. There's been so much so many changes that has happened since the last time you were here, but today we want to talk about SPRAT training and. What this means for the industry and what the latest and greatest is in terms of sprt. And for those who don't know what SPRT is, it's actually an acronym like most things in Wind, it's the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians, and they create [00:01:00] the standards around. The knowledge you're supposed to have and the skills you're supposed to have if you want to climb with rope access. Now. I, Alex, I wanna start off first, like how big of a problem do we have right now on the training on rope access technicians? I see a lot of variation across the United States in particular. Are you seeing the same thing, that they're just not so much a concrete standard everybody's using? Alex Fournier: I think in Canada, like we don't have that many schools that offer the course, first of all. So I think we don't have much in the east Coast. We probably have what? Three, four. In the west coast they have a little bit more. And it's often like vendors that will offer it. So it's a mistress, for example, offered a course. They do IDA and spread. I did my course at Novel in Montreal, which is one of the best training center I've seen in all my years of Rob Access. Celtic Falcon too in the East coast. Really good training center. But I [00:02:00] think since we don't have that many, everyone is kinda like on the same page, so everyone talked to each other and the course is pretty well structured, at least in Canada. Before when I started the course was four days, and then you had one days for the exam. So it's a lot to learn in four days, but now they changed it to five days of course, and then one extra day for the exam. So that give you much time to train and, if you don't understand something you can. You can really take the time to really understand it. So you're ready for the exam. Joel Saxum: Alex, let me ask you a question about SPRAT and ia, right? 'cause Sprat is the North American version. IRATA is usually the EU version or rest of the world version. They are they're organizations that push this safety forward and there's, this is how we should do things. And a lot of times a company will adopt it, say, X, Y, Z operator says, if you're gonna be on ropes on my site, you must be sprat level, this level, that level, that, however. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this is my take on it. They're not actually like a [00:03:00] governmental association.

Sue Stockdale talks to Vicki Tough, an arborist, tree climbing Instructor and Rope Access Level 3, Work at Height professional about the highs and lows of her job, and finds out about the Big Canopy Campout: an annual tree top event that connects tree climbing and forest enthusiasts around the world. Vicki grew up in the Cairngorm mountains of Scotland which set the scene for a fascination with the natural world. After pursuing a Zoology Degree at the University of Glasgow, Vicki's first experience of a rainforest in Ecuador became the catalyst for her career as a Work at Height Professional, Arborist and Tree Climbing Instructor. She founded Sylvana Alta to combine these professions and promote scientific exploration in forest canopies worldwide, believing that the greater understanding of its value will better protect it for the future. Vicki has organised, participated in, and led research expeditions for over 18 years assisting and contributing to scientific studies in South America, Indonesia, Europe and Australia. An IRATA level 3 supervisor Vicki has over 12 years of industrial rope access experience; working on large scale construction projects throughout the UK and Europe and contributing to the less than 1% of females in this role. Working in these contrasting environments has enabled an appreciation and understanding of technical rigging solutions and the importance of teamwork in often challenging conditions. In 2017 Vicki and several other climbing professionals set up Big Canopy Campout C.I.C and the event has grown to encompass participants from 36 different countries raising money to support grassroot organisations in their fight to protect their local forested areas. This series is kindly supported by Squadcast –the remote recording platform which empowers podcasters by capturing high-quality audio and video conversations. ROPE ACCESS LEVEL 4? - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about if the Rope Access industry needs a level 4. Now this episode is based mostly on my personal feelings about the subject and well I end up going down a bit of a rabbit hole here but all and all I think I get back to the point of the subject. I know that our current system has worked for the most part for 30+ years, but at some point, we have to adapt to change. One of the biggest challenges IRATA has taken on is introducing the RAMRASS program that is still in the works and has been for going on 10ish years and I'll talk about this is another episode. But for now let's dive into this rabbit hole of Rope Access Level 4, the course, and what it could look like. Is the standard of technicians dropping? Do we need technicians to get more hours between levels? Is it more experience that's needed or more hours on ropes? Sound we get more training for each level? We ask these and more questions this week.
Do we need an IRATA level 4? I think i first heard this discussed when i was a level 1, but it comes up more often in conversation theses days. What would you like to see on a level 4 course, We have a look at a few options.
This week we take a look at breaking into a tight line, Why this was taken out of the IRATA level 3, Is it a good skill to know and should it come back.Let us know what you think about the technique and if it should make a comeback.
This week we chat with Tane from Caines Rope Access, We cover working in the tropics, going from employee to owner in 3 months and how you can travel the World on an IRATA ticket.
This wee we look at all the myths we have heard about what you can do if your IRATA ticket expires. We then look at each level and see what you need to do to upgrade or revalidate. This is a good one to share with your mates to ensure they stay current and save some money.
WHEN SHOULD YOU UPGRADE TO LEVEL 2 - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about when you should upgrade from level 1 to level 2. SPRAT or IRATA, my thoughts are the same. I think everyone should upgrade as soon as possible. No matter what everyone else out there says. I think that this is the most important step in the process. Then feel free to stay a Level 2 as long as possible. This stage may be where SPRAT and IRATA need to focus on adjusting the requirements to upgrade. Just a thought… Anyways, let me know in the comments what your thoughts are on this subject. My goal here is to keep you all up to date as things change in our industries. So! Please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos like this, and don't forget to follow us wherever you get your podcasts. This week we sit down with Mike MacDonald. He started his career being sponsored by the UK Government to undertake IRATA training. This followed a 20 plus year career offshore finding his area of expertise in Special surveys.A great chat with some cool tips for techs from all over the World.
ROPE ACCESS NUMBERS - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about Rope Access Numbers. Not the number of people in the industry or the number of things that have gone wrong. But the Measurements we seem to talk about in our industry. Last week (JULY 11/21) I posted a tech talk video on How to Right Large Y-Hangs. (Click Here: https://youtu.be/EkbjLWes6AU ). In this video, I used the Measurement 1.5m. I would have to say that the industry norm is 1.5m for Y-Hangs, and such. Well, it's not 100% correct. Y-Hangs are defined as Small or Large: IRATA: 1M SPRAT: 2M Re-Anchors – Small or Large: IRATA: 1.5M SPRAT: 2M Deviations – Single or Double: IRATA: 20Degrees or 1.5M SPRAT: 20Degrees Now with this being said, SPRAT and IRATA require you to Double up the Rigging on Y-Hangs or Deviations no matter the distance if there is a chance of a Failure of the Rope Access System if the one side of the anchor device were to fail. So, if you are rigging a Y-hang or a Deviation to avoid a super-hot surface. Then it has to be doubled up anyway, so the rule of distance goes out the window. So, why are we so focused on the distance, when we should be focused on training/mentoring our techs better? The IRATA TACS and SPRAT Certification Requirements for Rope Access Work are only guidelines. So, hit me up in the comments or on Instagram and let's chat about this. Maybe make another episode on this about my findings. Should it be a big deal that the difference is ½ a meter or a meter? Or should we just agree to disagree that 1.5m is good enough across the board and IRATA/SPRAT should just meet in the middle? (1.5 METERS) Please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos like this, and don't forget to follow us wherever you get your podcasts. Follow on Instagram for live up-to-date stories of experiences working in the field, creating new content, and news on upcoming guests. www.instagram.com/RopeAccess_and_Climbing Till next time, Mikey Stevenson
This week we try and explain the updates in the IRATA TACS.We chat about how the assessment day needs to run and what are your options if it goes wrong and in what circumstances you can have another assessment on the same day.
IRATA TACS DOCUMENT UPDATE - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about the recent changes IRATA has made to the TACS Document. 9.4.3, 9.4.4, 9.4.5, and 9.4.6 For the most part, it should be pretty straightforward. But for others, it may not. So, I'm going to give some examples of how this should play out during your next assessment. My goal here is to keep you all up to date as things change in our industries. So! Please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos like this, and don't forget to follow us wherever you get your podcasts. There is no, one rope protector that does it all. But there are some that are better than others. Please note this is a ROPE ACCESS Only subject we are not talking about other industries like fire or arborist work. Also, we are just two guys from different parts of the world dealing with the same issues. So stay tuned. So please make sure to chime in, in the comments I would love to see what you have to say about the setups. *Disclaimer* Just because I say something is acceptable or not doesn't mean you can just go and use these setups at work. PLATO is the great, great, great granddaddy of the online computer network. Developing forums, email, multiplayer networked games, screen sharing, and instant messaging, it is responsible for many of the things we take for granted today. AJ and Joerg take a deep dive with IRATA.ONLINE's Thomas Cherryhomes into why PLATO is as awesome as it is, and how it still has plenty to offer both retro- and non-retro-enthusiasts. The interview starts 19 minutes into the recording! Watch the YouTube version preferably!
