Technicians need proper training for safe and efficient blade repairs. This week we speak with Alex Fournier director of Composite Operations at Enertek, Alex brings insight on the spread certification process and how recent changes are enhancing safety. Efficiency for technicians working at Height. Speaker 2: Welcome to Uptime Spotlight, shining Light on Wind. Energy's brightest innovators. This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Alex, welcome to the program. Alex Fournier: Thank you guys for having me once again. Allen Hall: Yeah, we're glad to have you back. There's been so much so many changes that has happened since the last time you were here, but today we want to talk about SPRAT training and. What this means for the industry and what the latest and greatest is in terms of sprt. And for those who don't know what SPRT is, it's actually an acronym like most things in Wind, it's the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians, and they create [00:01:00] the standards around. The knowledge you're supposed to have and the skills you're supposed to have if you want to climb with rope access. Now. I, Alex, I wanna start off first, like how big of a problem do we have right now on the training on rope access technicians? I see a lot of variation across the United States in particular. Are you seeing the same thing, that they're just not so much a concrete standard everybody's using? Alex Fournier: I think in Canada, like we don't have that many schools that offer the course, first of all. So I think we don't have much in the east Coast. We probably have what? Three, four. In the west coast they have a little bit more. And it's often like vendors that will offer it. So it's a mistress, for example, offered a course. They do IDA and spread. I did my course at Novel in Montreal, which is one of the best training center I've seen in all my years of Rob Access. Celtic Falcon too in the East coast. Really good training center. But I [00:02:00] think since we don't have that many, everyone is kinda like on the same page, so everyone talked to each other and the course is pretty well structured, at least in Canada. Before when I started the course was four days, and then you had one days for the exam. So it's a lot to learn in four days, but now they changed it to five days of course, and then one extra day for the exam. So that give you much time to train and, if you don't understand something you can. You can really take the time to really understand it. So you're ready for the exam. Joel Saxum: Alex, let me ask you a question about SPRAT and ia, right? 'cause Sprat is the North American version. IRATA is usually the EU version or rest of the world version. They are they're organizations that push this safety forward and there's, this is how we should do things. And a lot of times a company will adopt it, say, X, Y, Z operator says, if you're gonna be on ropes on my site, you must be sprat level, this level, that level, that, however. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but this is my take on it. They're not actually like a [00:03:00] governmental association.

Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 22nd of August 2024 We had yet another week with a high solar flux and relatively calm geomagnetic conditions. The solar flux index ended up at 239 on Thursday the 22nd, while the Kp index has been below 4 since Sunday the 18th. There are currently 11 active sunspot regions on the Sun's surface and there is a 20% chance of a major X-class solar flare according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. There are signs that HF propagation may be improving, but it will probably be another month or so before we see any large change. This is due to the summer doldrums that see the ionosphere harder to ionise due to a change in its chemical composition. By mid to late September, we will start to see a change to autumnal conditions and DX will start to open up again on the higher bands. Having said that, there is still DX to be had. The N5J DXpedition to Jarvis Island in the Pacific Ocean proved that the DX is workable, but the path was mainly open to well-equipped stations with beams and linear amplifiers. 15m remains the best DX band and there are occasional openings on the 12m band. The 10m band may come into its own as we head into September and October. According to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, solar cycle 25 likely reached its highest sunspot number yet of at least 299 on the 8th of August. This may increase further, but we may be close to solar maximum. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain around 200 to 210. Geomagnetic conditions will depend almost entirely on the occurrence of coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. And, as we are at a particularly active part of the solar cycle, flares and CMEs are very prevalent. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The overview for the coming week is that, although some fronts will affect the north and west at times, there are only a few that reach down to the southeast of Britain. This means that rain scatter is more likely in northern areas. There will be weak high pressure over southern areas for much of the coming week and, although not enough for a full-blown Tropo event, conditions should be a little ‘up', especially for paths into the near continent or across the North Sea. Meteor scatter is back to a more random approach since the broad peak of the August Perseids comes to an end. The solar conditions mean that auroras can be a possible element of operating excitement in the coming week. Remember to look out for a disturbed Kp index value of 6 or greater. The last part of the sporadic-E season is playing out this week taking us to the end of the month. These 'last hurrahs' are usually characterised by QSOs of very limited duration on the 10m band, or perhaps up to 6m, and mainly over the southern half of Europe. This usually favours southern UK stations but, notwithstanding the previous comments, some years have seen isolated Sporadic-E events in the first part of September. But they are certainly not reliable. Moon declination is positive but still rising, reaching maximum on Wednesday, so long Moon visibility windows and high peak elevations continue. We are past perigee now, so path losses are increasing again. 144MHz sky noise is low but increasing to a moderate 500 Kelvin on Wednesday before falling back to low at the end of the week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

In Just Another Jack: The Private Lives of Nursery Rhymes, poet and novelist Michele Herman explores a variety of timeless human predicaments - adolescent lust, overprotective parents, dementia, gender confusion and more - by imagining her way into the actual lives of eight familiar nursery-rhyme characters. Many authors have taken fictional or mythological characters and brought them into our contemporary world, but these eight story-poems accomplish something more unusual by roaming around in Mr. and Mrs. Sprat's house to find out what ails them, following little Bo Beep out to the Welsh pasture to learn how she lost track of her sheep, conjuring up a twin brother for Little Miss Muffet, and much more. Save The Village features Herman's beloved home village, which feels itself like a character as alive as any other we meet in this novel as sprawling as it is particular. Life hasn't turned out quite the way Becca Cammeyer of Greenwich Village – once voted most likely to land on Broadway or in jail for a good cause – had planned. Her only child has moved to another continent, she's still living in a fifth-floor walkup with her aging dog, still single, still nearly broke, still not on speaking terms with her best friend or mother, and still hearing the ghost of her long-dead father whispering in her ear. But she's a semi-famous tour guide, and on a perfect October evening, Becca almost believes all is well with her world as she helps a group of South Carolinian tourists fall in love with her beloved Village. The tour concludes, and Becca sends the women on their way, unaware that her world is about to be upended. In the aftermath of a tragedy, Becca must come to terms with her own paralysis, her survivor's guilt, and the messiness of her life. This episode's Test Valley Tale is a magical wish story. As Mary makes her weekly trip along the Sprat and Winkle Railway line from Stockbridge to Mottisfont, she encounters a fish on a bridge! This is when things take a turn for the magical as the fish offers her a wish. Just one wish. What will Mary wish for? ‘The Magical Fish of Mottisfont' is my version of a traditional tale called ‘The Clever Wish' or ‘The Wise Wish'. Sometimes the wish giver is a deer and in some versions, it can even be a unicorn! I thought here in Test Valley, with our beautiful chalk rivers and streams, the wish giver should be a trout! After the story, there is an interview with two amazing children – Rosa who is 10 and Owen who is 12. I was so impressed with their knowledge and enthusiasm for the natural world, that I think this interview really illustrates the idea behind Test Valley Tales, and that is to encourage people to get out and explore where we live and rediscover it's magical places through its stories. As David Attenborough says: “No one will protect what they don't care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced” The episode is accompanied with music by renowned folk musician Paul Sartin and Hampshire Country Dance Tunes from the Pyle family manuscript of 1822, recorded at WildGoose Records in Wherwell. This story is part of Test Valley Tales. 'Test Valley Tales' is an Arts Council Funded project and one of Test Valley Arts Foundation's Borough of Culture Legacy Projects. All the stories are set in the beautiful landscape of Test Valley which is in Hampshire in England. There is also an illustrated book of the all the stories which accompanies this podcast. This is available from my website. Please see link below. Hope you enjoy it! Story written by Amanda Kane-Smith, based on a traditional Irish folk tale. Podcast produced by Miles Kane-Smith. Music by Paul Sartin recorded at WildGoose Records in Wherwell. Test Valley Tales can be found on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter as @testvalleytales. The fellas are back after a brief hiatus! Join the Bastards as we discuss the most recent Ye interview, Will Smith's most recent headlines about being jealous of Tupac and having sex in his mom's kitchen, and the untimely murder of the Memphis legend Young Dolph. The constant violence and death that befalls our hip hop artists in their hometowns has been disheartening. We also discuss what specific song you should never clap cheeks to, and Sprat's very unique palette and disdain for condiments. Enjoy, subscribe and share!
Today's story is inspired by a classic Aesop's fable. Sprat the Gnat finds a fantastic new home. WHEN SHOULD YOU UPGRADE TO LEVEL 2 - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about when you should upgrade from level 1 to level 2. SPRAT or IRATA, my thoughts are the same. I think everyone should upgrade as soon as possible. No matter what everyone else out there says. I think that this is the most important step in the process. Then feel free to stay a Level 2 as long as possible. This stage may be where SPRAT and IRATA need to focus on adjusting the requirements to upgrade. Just a thought… Anyways, let me know in the comments what your thoughts are on this subject. My goal here is to keep you all up to date as things change in our industries. So! ANSI Z459.1 - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm diving into ANSI Z459.1 Rope Access Standard that was just released. I did pay for a version of this standard so I knew what the standard itself said. So I could comment on it a little better. I also spoke with people within SPRAT and Z359. The key point to this is to go in with an open mind and understand that everyone is trying to find the middle ground. It's not easy when you are dealing with standards at the best of times. But when you are trying to build a new standard that now affects your everyday work methods it's hard to see all sides. There are good things about this and bad. No Question there. I dive into some of the main things that I saw in the standard. NO, I CAN NOT SHARE THE STANDARD WITH YOU SO DON'T ASK! This is something that happened many years ago here in Canada. It takes time to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But with hard work, it can happen. Also, this is NOT law so you don't have to follow it as of right now. But I would suggest you get familiar with it. This episode is just a start. I will make more episodes on this topic as I learn more and as things are updated. SPRAT's Response: https://sprat.org/news/sprat-response-to-ansi-assp-z459-1/?fbclid=IwAR1jZ4YJ4RvfiNXbiYNc7dAErsXd09ZAYx7VfMPq0LGfQYTshnjtI3eieLw My goal here is to keep you all up to date as things change in our industries. ROPE ACCESS NUMBERS - PODCAST - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. Today I'm chatting about Rope Access Numbers. Not the number of people in the industry or the number of things that have gone wrong. But the Measurements we seem to talk about in our industry. Last week (JULY 11/21) I posted a tech talk video on How to Right Large Y-Hangs. (Click Here: https://youtu.be/EkbjLWes6AU ). In this video, I used the Measurement 1.5m. I would have to say that the industry norm is 1.5m for Y-Hangs, and such. Well, it's not 100% correct. Y-Hangs are defined as Small or Large: IRATA: 1M SPRAT: 2M Re-Anchors – Small or Large: IRATA: 1.5M SPRAT: 2M Deviations – Single or Double: IRATA: 20Degrees or 1.5M SPRAT: 20Degrees Now with this being said, SPRAT and IRATA require you to Double up the Rigging on Y-Hangs or Deviations no matter the distance if there is a chance of a Failure of the Rope Access System if the one side of the anchor device were to fail. So, if you are rigging a Y-hang or a Deviation to avoid a super-hot surface. Then it has to be doubled up anyway, so the rule of distance goes out the window. So, why are we so focused on the distance, when we should be focused on training/mentoring our techs better? The IRATA TACS and SPRAT Certification Requirements for Rope Access Work are only guidelines. So, hit me up in the comments or on Instagram and let's chat about this. Maybe make another episode on this about my findings. Should it be a big deal that the difference is ½ a meter or a meter? Or should we just agree to disagree that 1.5m is good enough across the board and IRATA/SPRAT should just meet in the middle? (1.5 METERS) Please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos like this, and don't forget to follow us wherever you get your podcasts. LET'S TALK SPRAT WITH TROLL - THE ROPE ACCESS AND CLIMBING PODCAST Hello and welcome back to The Rope Access and Climbing Podcast. This week I'm chatting with Troll about All Things SPRAT. I haven't done a lot of research on SPRAT in past years, as a Canadian working in the Oil and Gas industry, this certification isn't widely accepted. However, all over the USA no matter the industry it doesn't seem to matter what certification you carry. So ya, have a listen and if you have any more questions about the organization, please drop them in the comments and I will be sure to make another video answering them. So please go check them out today and see what they can do for you and your operation. http://www.SPRAT.org Please make sure to subscribe to my channel for more videos like this, and don't forget to follow us wherever you get your podcasts. While in recent years Thucydides has sometimes been praised for his prescience, some earlier physician-readers found his picture simply impossible to believe. Thomas Sprat, in his 1659 poetic work, uses Thucydides work as a framework in which to reflect on the English Civil War. Speaker: Professor Helen King

Had they listened to their father, the children would have been safe in their beds on that blustery night. But as it was, they were shivering before a pitiful fire no bigger than a candle flame and just as delicate, while a pack of goblins stood by the cave mouth arguing over what to do with their prize of three healthy children. During this session, we showed no restraint whatsoever because we were at the 4 hour mark when we stopped recording! While we know you generally like long episodes, we thought we’d split this one into two parts. In part 2, we cover Ham Radio accessories and gifts for your Workbench. Frans and Jen Weits took a leap into restaurant ownership when they opened Jack Sprat in Girdwood, Alaska. While it was not an easy road, it was one they will never regret. As Frans says, a measure of their success is that they could sit down and speak with us while others ran their kitchen. Let this couple motivate you to get creative in the kitchen with your partner, and over a nice meal, push the boundaries of your perspectives enough to dream about business possibilities together. http://5ed.8db.myftpupload.com/

When is comes to homebrewing QRP HF radios with simple parts and test equipment, then one of the go-to guys is Tony Fishpool, G4WIF, current membership chairman of the G-QRP group in the UK, and frequent contributor to its quarterly SPRAT magazine. Tony is also a co-author with Graham Firth, G3MFJ, of Simple Test Equipment for the QRPer, and numerous articles on equipment building with attention to detail and budget. Tony believes, along with his co-hearts at G-QRP, that ham radio does not have to be expensive to be fun. G4WIF is my QSO today.

Bill Kelsey, N8ET, has a long and interesting amateur radio career beginning in 1962. From his interest in QRP and QRP kits, Bill founded the Kanga Kit Company, creating radio and test equipment kits for the ham community for many years. While Bill is recovering from a recent stroke, he still has projects on his workbench, now using Arduino processors, pursuing UHF moon bounce, and finds time to operate the Digital modes. Bill joins Eric, 4Z1UG, in this QSO Today.
Keith Ranger, G0KJK, now retired from the Church of England, has had a lifelong love of electronics and radio who has never owned a commercially manufactured amateur radio. Instead Keith builds his own receivers and transmitters, works the World, makes contacts, and rag chews. He quickly dispels the notion that ham radio is an expensive hobby and demonstrates how to have fun and enjoy the amateur radio hobby for very little money. Keith joins Eric, 4Z1UG, on this episode of QSO Today.
After el short introduction, we go into a silent meditation session on the three spaces. Right after the meditation, we go back to the theme of the "spirits". Alan talks about how scientific studies, from halfway through the 17th century up until now, have "dealt" with both internal and external spirits. He points out that a contemplative inquiry has been more and more ignored over this period, which ultimately yields a disenchanted Universe. At the end of the session, we go into the subject of spirits again, this time from Dzogchen perspective, quoting the Vajra Essence from Dudjom Lingpa. Finally, a story about spirits and nuns near the cave of Tilopa. Meditation starts at: Not recorded (silent meditation on the three spaces)
