Joni Mitchell had hits, fame, and lots of famous friends when she decided to head out on a cross-country roadtrip and craft her jazziest album yet with a little help from Jaco Pastorious. The fellas discuss alterante tunings, triple tracking bass parts, and the long lonesome highway of a rock and roll life. Podcasters note: I mistakenly called this podcast, episode 18. It is in fact episode 19.I first became aware of writer, producer and author Bill Milkowski back in the mid to late 70's, when, as a young up-and-coming rock guitar player, I started buying Guitar Player Magazine. As my pursuit shifted to Jazz Guitar, Bill's writing was right there with me in such publications as Downbeat, Jazz Times, Guitar World and other top-shelf publications. Not to mention countless album liner notes. Suffice it to say, his writing is just as impactful today as it was when I was 17.In this podcast, Bill and I talk about Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, Jaco Pastorious and much more. He is definitely full of surprises and has a vast wealth of knowledge in both the Jazz and Rock worlds. It's a fun, insighful, informative and entertaining interview and is definitely worth checking out! I think you're really gonna enjoy this one!As always, I'd love to hear or read your feedback so don't be shy!And for more Jazz Guitar related content including interviews, reviews and more, please visit Jazz Guitar Life at www.thejazzguitarlife.com.

Alex is now a dad! Stovepipe is still competely alone! Both STILL manage to entartain, challenge, and inspire with their podcast. This week, they gush about how cool Sheryl Crow is, do the same for Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorious comes up of course, and drink booze with their faces.
There were guys who thinking of the bass as a first voice. You had cats like Eberhardt Weber on upright, Stanley (Clarke), Jaco (Pastorious), they were definitely trailblazers at that time on the electric bass. Then you had cats like Monk Montgomery whose credited with being the first to play the electric bassist. When fender gave the bass to Lionel Hampton who gave it on to Monk. We're talking 1951, the first precision bass. Monk was still chomping at it, still laying a foundational sound. Then you had all the guys like Kenny Baker who played bass on all The Gamble and Huff (SOP). You had Val Burke who was the bass player with "Willie And The Mighty Magnificence who was the backup band out of New Jersey that did all the RnB groups like "The Moments" and "The Whatnots." Then you had Robbie "Kool" Bell from Kool And The Gang. He was using the bass guitar as a first voice. What I'm doing is just a continuation of that, those guys really led the way. Musical ideas bear freshness. When you think of an arrangement where everyone is just playing a role. We never thought about the instruments as being the instruments that they were. They were always vehicles for moving out of the realm of whatever that instrument was. I never thought of the bass and being the bass. I knew it was an instrument that had a certain tone quality but when it came to the composition and melodies we were always all free and all equal. Ornette never thought of himself as being the leader of the band, of course he was, but in the musical sense he always felt as though he was inside of the music and not standing out in front. It was all participation, moving in the same direction. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Maxime ECHENNE alias Le reporteur-diggeur à domicile
There are many reasons so many drummers respect Ra-Kalam Bob Moses. His seminal book Drum Wisdom brought out his 8/8 concept of playing to resolution points. His ground-breaking 1973 album, Bittersuite in the Ozone, marked the start of a solo recording career that continues through this day. He's worked with some of the most respected names in jazz, including playing with Jaco Pastorious on Pat Metheny's classic 1976 debut album, Bright Size Life. The godson of Ed Shaughnessy, young Bob Moses was fortunate to grow up in the same building with such greats as Max Roach, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones. Admittedly getting into drums as a young teen to impress others, he soon was inspired by seeing Coltrane and realized that music was about much more than what people thought or admired. From that point on, Bob Moses began playing music from the heart, music that could fill the world with much needed love. In a world of fakes and copies, Ra-Kalam honors his own heroes by going his own way in life, music and art. In this very special episode of Contraption, I am honored to talk with Ra-kalam Bob Moses, who shares stories of his past, news of his current and upcoming work, and his overall “drum wisdom.”
There are few musicians who, although strongly associated with a particular instrument, transcend that instrument to exhibit an overall musicality. It’s not about technique, proficiency or virtuosity -- It’s about serving the song as the music pours out of every pore of his or her body. Jaco Pastorious was such a musician – the man who changed the role of the bass and the way it’s played. Tied to that iconic sunburst Fender jazz that he personally defretted, Jaco went beyond the bass – he was the music. Johnny Vidacovich, today’s guest on Contraption, is that same kind of musician. An incredible drummer in the tradition of New Orleans hitters like Zigaboo, Herlin Riley and Stanton Moore, Johnny goes beyond the drums to infuse every set and song he plays with that rare musicality that touches those he plays with and those he plays for. Johnny credits growing up in New Orleans and hearing the sounds and beats of the bands that passed his modest childhood home. It began, he says, during his infancy, before he could walk or read. It’s part of his DNA – part of his very soul. You’d think someone as gifted and talented as Johnny Vidacovich had set out his whole life to be a working musician, but he was working as a drummer without really thinking about it as a career – that was until his daughter was born when he was 31. The truth of the matter is Johnny has worked hard – very hard – for his legendary reputation. Taking lessons with New Orleans drummer Charlie Suchor after getting his first drum kit when he was twelve, that eventually led him to a life changing offer as a high schooler… It should be noted that Johnny was happy to talk with us – he loves to share his story and his ideas related to playing – to be a musician. So all I can say is I’m humbled and honored and so appreciative to have had this time with Johnny to share with all of you.

In the May edition of #JCsMusicology, we'll be contemplating the discography of Joni Mitchell, from 1975 to 1976. Beginning with "The Hissing of Summer Lawns", this episode explores the transformations of selected songs, from their acoustic demos to full band productions. Then, we'll deconstruct the characters and environments of "Hejira", tracking the song's developments and meanings. https://www.facebook.com/JohnCameronProductions https://twitter.com/Cameron_John Correction: This episode suggsest that Max Bennet recommended Jaco Pastorious to Joni. According to Reckless Daughter by David Yaffe, it was actually Robben Ford.

My guest today is Mike Stern. Mike is one of my favorite guitarists and has been since I first got interested in jazz as a teenager. Mike cut his teeth playing in blues and rock bands like Blood Sweat and Tears before joining the Miles Davis Band in the early 80's. His career with Miles, Steps Ahead, and also with The Brecker Brothers and Jaco Pastorious is widely documented. His solo career has produced 16 solo records and numerous Grammy nominations. I like to think of Mike's playing like equal parts NYC sophistication and part “cobra” guitar player - he can bend your ear with the hippest be-bop lines played with flawless right hand technique or seduce you with that big piano sound he dials up (with that ancient Yamaha SPX 90) and then without warning he'll stomp on his distortion pedal and slay you with screaming rock licks, building solo after solo up to an intensity like few guitarists can. This interview took place at Mike Stern's apt in NYC Feb 2016. In this casual interview Mike talks about many topics including - the importance of good time, what he learned from Miles Davis, singing what you play, some cool sax licks Michael Brecker showed him, what it was like playing with his good friend the late Jaco Pastorius- and of course lots of funny stories! Mike is an inspiring guy to be around- he is always practicing and still hungry to learn after many years or playing. Even though he's at the top of his game he is a humble cat and it's not beneath him to stop you to learn a lick or idea- He's also a pretty hilarious guy as you'll hear- Enjoy!
