In this episode, Caleb is joined by Casey Hough (PhD, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary) to discuss his new book, When Poets were Warriors: Retrieving a Biblical Vision of Masculinity. Together, they discuss how, instead of allowing cultural stereotypes to form our vision of masculinity, we need to return to the emotionally complex and paradoxically challenging example of Jesus' own life and teaching. As the last Adam, the true Son of Abraham, Son of David, Jesus demonstrates how to live in conformity to God's will as a man as He calls us to follow Him.ResourcesWhen Poets Were Warriors: Retrieving a Biblical Vision of Masculinity by Casey HoughDisciplines of a Godly Man by Kent HughesThe Person of Christ: An Introduction by Stephen WellumThe Emotional Life of Our Lord by B.B. This week In the Den, Jen sits down with Jeffrey Marx to chat about a variety of topics, including Jeffrey's fascinating career as a reality television casting director in Hollywood, his journey to winning an Emmy, embracing his body size, and finding queer joy amidst the challenges of life. It's an episode you won't want to miss! Special Guest: Jeffrey MarxJeffrey Marx is an Emmy Award-winning casting producer for reality television. Notable credits include HBO's We're Here, Love on the Spectrum, MTV's The Real Word, Nailed It! and more. Before his career in TV, he followed in his mother's footsteps as a special education teacher. Jeffrey got his start in casting when he was cast as a player in “The Glass House”, which is still streaming on the ABC app. He went toe-to-toe with a very kind Mormon mother over gay marriage on the show and, later that year, became boyfriends with a man from a very devout Mormon family. Although they aren't together anymore, Jeffrey's experiences with the LDS community have shaped how he approaches casting queer stories today. Now happily partnered with a non-Mormon boyfriend in Los Angeles, Jeffrey reflects on the dynamics of love, faith, and what “family” means to LGBTQ folks.Links from the Show:Article about Jeffrey: https://metrosource.com/jeffrey-marx-has-a-colorful-path-to-an-emmy/?fbclid=PAAaYRdn_P-B1dDUosbHwoPyHcoRrEJz9NLyvR3T6hsm-Xcsv9Dt49U_usUwM_aem_AVJYuwAcrMH6MCULFtsS5FUdY7fUUrYD4nQJdtzCDWARK2kpQja_Ix2LwbvuY8a_OLQLink to Jeffrey's IG: https://www.instagram.com/jeffmarxthespot/?hl=en Join Mama Dragons: www.mamadragons.org In the Den is made possible by generous donors like you.Help us continue to deliver quality content by becoming a donor today at mamadragons.org.Connect with Mama Dragons:WebsiteInstagramFacebookDonate to this podcast

The legendary Bill Campbell is called the trillion dollar coach by his biographers. Campbell coached and mentored larger-than-life business leaders Larry Page, Eric Schmidt, Steve Jobs, Marissa Mayer, and many others. If Bill was the trillion dollar coach, then I'm not sure what to call Joe Ehrmann and his friend and fellow coach, Biff Poggi who are central pillars in the book Season of Life by Jeffrey Marx.Little did Jeffrey Marx know that his life would be transformed forever once he stepped on a Baltimore Colts football field during training camp as an eleven-year-old. Years later, he would reconnect with Joe Ehrmann who took him under his wing during those earlier years. What was supposed to be a newspaper article about the demolition of a football field turned into a book about the building up of young men not just in football, but in the bigger game of life.Season of Life is one of the best books I've read in years. Central themes include false masculinity, revolving integrity, the best definitions of coach and success, and a young football player's reflection on a huddle.

As an author and keynote speaker, Marx has written six books and his most requested presentation is – "This Thing We Call Success" – which focuses on the major themes in *Season of Life*: building healthy relationships, building community, and building leaders. David Jacobson ([@CoachDaveJake](https://twitter.com/CoachDaveJake)), who led PCA's marketing communications efforts for over 12 years, talks to Marx about the influence of *Season of Life*, and how coaches and teams all over the country have adapted the main themes of *Season of Life* to fit the needs of their program. Both Marx's book and this podcast dive deeper into key themes of *Season of Life*, such as relationships and working for a cause greater than oneself, and how youth sports reinforces and teaches those values to kids. Other highlights of the podcast include: - The power of the sports platform to change relationships and the world for better. - The powerful role of coaches, and how PCA National Advisory Board Member Joe Ehrmann redefined coaching as "taking athletes from where they are to where they want to be going," regardless of results on the scoreboard. - How it's a myth that "sports build character": sports, according to Marx, *can* build character if the coach is intentional about teaching character through sports. “To me, a great story is something that is so good on its own, I can't mess it up as a researcher or as a writer.” Jeffrey Marx, author of 6 bestsellers and keynote speaker, joins The MindSide Podcast this week to discuss his path as a journalist, as well as his perspective on today's chaotic world. Marx believes that people hold the best stories, and it simply takes building and maintaining a relationship with them to bring those stories to the rest of the world. Throughout his career, Jeffrey has seen the world change in character, which has led him to look at society through a unique lens. “We all have a lens, or a prism through which we look at things that determine every choice we make during a day.” Everyone can contribute to a better society. While we all wear a mask to some degree, we all have an opportunity to impact people in a way that can better the world that surrounds us. Marx explains how “we have an empathy deficit disorder in this nation,” and goes on to tell of some things that we, as a society, can keep in mind to help better the space we live in and the people around us. My guest today is Jeffrey Marx, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "Season of Life." Today on the show, Jeffrey talks about his relationship with retired NFL athlete and now minister and high school football coach Joe Ehrmann. Jeff begins by sharing what he learned from Joe and other NFL players about what it means to be a man during his stint as a ball boy for the Baltimore Colts in the 1970s. He then shares how Joe went from a party animal to an inner-city minister who focused on helping young men. We then discuss what Joe sees as the lies of masculinity in the popular culture and how they need to be replaced with strategic masculinity. We end our conversation talking about how coaching high school football ties into Joe’s ministry to men and how Joe’s philosophy on masculinity helped Jeffrey draw closer to his father. Lots of great insights on this show so be sure to take notes.
