Guest post by Jeremy Campbell, CEO of Black Isle Group and creator of Nudge.ai - turning learning into lasting habits. Imagine this: AI is your new colleague, handling repetitive tasks, analysing mountains of data, and offering insights you never thought possible. But here's the twist - it can't work at its best without you. While AI excels at logic and efficiency, it's your human skills - empathy, creativity, adaptability - that make the magic happen. If that sounds like a bit of a balancing act, it is. But it's also the future of work, and as organisations, we need to prepare for it. To do this, we need to shift from focusing on lofty goals to creating systems and habits that support this collaboration. As James Clear says in Atomic Habits, "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." Let's dive into what that looks like and how we can build workplaces where humans and machines truly complement one another. Why Human Skills including Empathy Are Key in an AI World According to the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report, 50% of all employees will need reskilling by 2025 due to the increasing integration of AI and automation. The report also highlights that while technical skills remain essential, human-centric skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence are rising in demand. Why? Because AI, as remarkable as it is, has its limits. It can identify patterns, predict trends, and crunch data, but it can't replicate human traits like empathy, creativity, and adaptability. 1. Empathy: The Human Connection?AI can analyse customer preferences and suggest solutions, but it can't interpret subtle emotions or provide genuine reassurance in high-stakes conversations. Empathy builds trust, loyalty, and deeper collaboration, making it a critical skill for the future workplace. 2. Creativity: Turning Data into Ideas?AI might generate ideas or refine concepts, but creativity comes from humans connecting the dots in unexpected ways. It's the human ability to challenge norms and think laterally that turns raw AI outputs into groundbreaking innovations. 3. Adaptability: Thriving in Change? As AI technologies evolve, so do workplace dynamics. Adaptability allows us to respond quickly to shifts, learn new tools, and approach challenges with resilience and curiosity - something that algorithms simply can't mimic. The Power of Focus and Essentialism It's tempting to try to tackle every skill gap at once, but we need to prioritise. Greg McKeown, in his book Essentialism, argues for doing "less, but better." Instead of chasing every shiny new skill, we need to focus on the ones that will truly make a difference. At the same time, we need to make space for deep, focused work. Cal Newport's Deep Work makes a strong case for how essential focus is in a distracted world. He writes, "The ability to perform deep work is becoming increasingly rare at exactly the same time it is becoming increasingly valuable." Organisations should be asking: how can we create environments where employees have the time and space to develop these human skills alongside AI? Building Habits for the Future It's easy to get caught up in the hype of "future-proofing" your workforce with endless training and upskilling. But as James Clear reminds us, it's not about the intensity of effort; it's about creating consistent, effective habits. If we want employees to build empathy, creativity, and adaptability, we need to embed these into the daily rhythm of work. Encourage Small, Consistent Actions: Creativity doesn't come from one big brainstorming session but from cultivating habits like regular reflection, asking better questions, and exploring diverse perspectives. Reward Adaptability: Acknowledge and celebrate employees who embrace change or take risks in uncertain situations. This sets the tone for a growth mindset across the organisation. Practical Steps for Organisations So, how do you actually make ...

Jeremy Campbell, associate director for strategic engagement in George Mason University's Institute for a Sustainable Earth, says that at its current pace the vast Amazon rainforest, in five to 10 years, could pass a tipping point in which it could transform into grasslands. That process, fueled by deforestation and climate change, is a threat to the biodiversity and socio-cultural aspects that define the region, and has global implications as well. In this fascinating conversation, Campbell explains to Mason President Gregory Washington the magnitude of what the loss of the Amazon rainforest would really mean.

Few things are as polarizing in the U.S. as gun restrictions. For many Americans, the second amendment is a staple of American freedom and is enshrined in the United States Constitution for a very good reason. For others, it's an outdated and often, misunderstood law that needs change in order to make sense in the 21 century. This week we got Veteran and ex-marine Jeremy Campbell with us to talk about gun laws, the issues that are facing our country, and what is truly wrong in this nation. Despite all of its problems, the U.S. is a great nation with even greater potential. On this 4th of July, we honor this nation which stands for so much greatness. Yet, we also need to have some really difficult choices to make about what kind of country we want to live in. Tune in now. ============================================================= We take mental health extremely seriously. At some point in our lives we are all in need of a little help. When you climb up a tree, don't we see life from a different perspective? We realise we part of something bigger than ourselves, we see an overview of everything and it helps us understand our place in the world more. It is also true, that generally many people and businesses seem to have a distorted relationship with nature, but as Environmental Psychologist and Design professional Anicee Bauer of “Humans in Trees” puts it: “we are nature”. Can Biophilic Design really encourage a more sustainable lifestyle, and why should the Workplace include Biophilic Design in order to help reach that NetZero target? Anicee is going to be speaking about “How to Design Sustainable Habitats for Sustainable Habits” in the NetZero Workplace taking place on 7th July 2022 in London (for more information and book a space, look here: https://workplacetrends.co/events/the-net-zero-workplace/ ). What is inspiring, is that Anicee's whole business model is to encourage a more Biophilic way of life not only in the external design of a space but also in the inner landscape within each one of us. In this podcast, she shares with us the three fascinating levels in this process. We touch on Wabi-Sabi design strategies, Aristotelian intellectual moral virtues, spirituality, reconnecting with the fun we feel in nature and Einstein. Biophilia is indeed our innate connection with nature and living things. We touch on studies that show how Biophilic Design stimulates pro-social behaviour, trust and empathy in employees. Also how Biophilic Design encourages us to be more predisposed to want to be in contact and to care for nature, which in turn encourages sustainable living habits. We also talk about those “awe”-inspiring moments in nature, how they make us feel humble, and how they encourage us to think less about the ego, the “I/me” and open our focus towards the collective good, our social surroundings and therefore our environment. Imagine a workplace where everyone is fulfilling their purpose. We need more people to be visionary. Question is, are you one of those free-thinking business owners who already do or want to do things better, not just for the greater good of people but of the planet too? So how do we design workplaces and maybe more importantly maintain our workspaces and offices during the course of the building's life span and use to help create happy, healthy and also sustainable places to be? We speak with Ian Baker, Head of Workplace and Jeremy Campbell, Executive Director Marketing and Business Development for Emcor UK to find out their direct experience as facility managers just what is happening in workplaces, and also how we can improve what we're doing now to also hit that NetZero target. We talk about how worried they are about climate change and the IPCC report. We are at a turning point, there is no Planet B, if we carry on as we are doing there aren't going to be future generations, we have moral obligations as business leaders to solve these problems So how can business owners start to address the issue of trying to reach Net Zero? A recent survey Emcor carried out revealed that 50% of business owners were not ready or not yet on a journey to meet their Net Zero targets. We discuss how we can retrofit solutions into buildings. The EPC ratings will come into play for the workplace, and this is going to force companies to really think about that retrofit decision. Before the pandemic we just used our buildings and didn't really think about HOW we were using them. Now we have an opportunity to really create workplace that we chose to come to, and also to responsibly consume the buildings themselves. We need to really think WHY we are using a space and manage that accordingly. The Journal of Biophilic Design is a media sponsor of the new event THe Net Zero Workplace, which is taking place on 7th July 2022, Cavendish Conference Centre in London. Find out more here and to book tickets. Ian and Jeremy are both speaking there too on “Responsible Consumption in the Workplace”.Biophilic Design is one of the key elements in helping companies meet their targets. How we attract and retain talent, so our workplaces are destinations of choice, we want to create workplaces that make us feel great, that stimulate our personal feeling of wellness and wellbeing and also inspire our creativity. “Without encryption, we will lose all privacy. This is our new battleground” That’s what Snowden said in a Guardian article this week. The UK, US, and Australia are all actively working to undermine our encryption by forcing back doors and fatal flaws into the encryption that we all use. The Snowden revelations exposed that governments are actively undermining online privacy, and have already cracked many forms of encryption. Australia has basically banned end-to-end encryption, and the white house is talking about it. Governments are forcing private companies to undermine their own encryption. "This renders all of our public infrastructure and private lives permanently unsafe." says Snowden. It is something we cannot allow. I explain how VPNs can help give us back online privacy, how they work, which kinds have already been cracked by the NSA and which still seem effective, and what to look for in a good VPN. Keep in mind, VPNs are not anonymous and are not a fool proof method for privacy. Jeremy Campbell, creator of DNSleaktest.com, said: "Using public VPNs for anonymity is foolish and potentially dangerous, no matter how securely it’s configured, simply because the technology was not designed at all for anonymity. VPN services require that you trust them, which is a property that anonymity systems do not have.” How safe is your VPN, really? Often times in nature bigger is considered better, more beautiful. The ocean, the stars, the redwoods of Yosemite. Likewise, smaller things can be considered cute, and fun. Puppies, kittens, even baby corn. The world of bonsai perfectly blends the two, taking what would be a full size majestic tree, and shrinking it down to pot size sensibility. Historian Howard Zinn once said that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. In this episode we will hear from a number of dissenters. First, sign of the times. We'll hear how a placard holding woman near parliament hill drew an unwelcome visit from the RCMP. And, a group of folks in Regina, Saskatchewan are resisting private control over their water. Then, an announcement of a different kind of labour union, whose leaders say that their dissenting voices will be heard. And Inter Pares founder Ian Smillie about whether development work is working. In our democracy holding a protest sign is a pretty basic right of freedom of expression. Or is it? Redeye host Jane Williams gets the story from one woman who was stopped by the RCMP for doing just that – holding a sign. Hear the whole interview here. Citizen advocacy group Regina Water Watch has forced a referendum to keep their wastewater facility public. Scott Neigh spoke with activist Jeremy Campbell about the campaign. Hear the whole interview here. Over the labour day weekend a new union was formed in Canada. It is named “Unifor,” and it is made up of the members of Canadian Auto Workers union and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union. UNIFOR is now the largest private sector union in Canada. It represents more than 20 sectors. That's over 300 000 workers. The leaders of the new union say UNIFOR will do things differently. Here is Inaugural Unifor President Jerry Dias making the opening statement at his first Unifor press conference. To hear the whole press conference listen here. Does development work? Ian Smilley has some thoughts on the matter. Smiley has been an international development practitioner, consultant, teacher and writer for many years. He has lived and worked in Asia and Africa, was a founder of Inter Pares and Executive Director of CUSO. This month, a new podcast called face 2 face, hosted by David Peck joined the network. Here is David Peck talking with Ian Smilley. Hear the whole interview here. Finally, please support our campaign to put Karl Nerenberg back on the on Parliament Hill beat.
