John Walters visits with former Iowa State wrestler and wrestling coach Jim Gibbons. Jim has produced an amazing docu-series about the 1986 Iowa vs. Iowa State wrestling meet called The Dual. This was a match that pitted the top two teams in the country. And Jim told the story, through the eyes of the wrestlers, of that night (Iowa State pulling the upset) and what ensued in the months that followed (Iowa going on to win it's ninth consecutive NCAA Title that year, and ISU finally ending that streak the following season). Jim sat down (together) guys who competed that night. It's incredibly well-done and is debuting now.

It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Tuesday, October 17.-Dylan Morrison of the MorWrestling podcast has a pair of guests on from Tarleton State to discuss what is currently happening with the future of Texas wrestling and what exactly is factual about the school's look to start a Division I wrestling program. New assistant coach Jimmy Overhiser also makes his first public appearance as part of the budding Tarleton State program. Check out that excellent interview wherever podcasts are found by searching out M O R Wrestling.-The University of Mount Union has announced the addition of a women's wrestling team to its athletic program, with competition set to begin in the fall of 2024. This move comes as women's wrestling experiences rapid growth at both the high school and collegiate levels, and it will make Mount Union the fourth Ohio Athletic Conference school to offer the sport.-Over on Rokfin, Willie Saylor of MatScouts has the first two previews out about the upcoming monstrosity of high school wrestling that is the Super 32 Challenge. Willie previews the weights through 144 pounds, with more coming on his channel. The girls pre-seeds for the event were also released, you can give those a look over at FloWrestling.-Also on Rokfin at the Missouri Wrestling channel, Cody Thorn breaks down the journey of Joshua Quiorz, the California native who is still searching for his next move after Division II William Jewell announced it was going to QUOTE “pause” the wrestling program after this year. School officials refused to answer our queries when the information came out last month, but still moved forward with shelving the program indefinitely, leaving the wrestlers who had already paid for their fall semester in a lurch. Missouri Wrestling has done a real good job covering this story. Give it a read. -Iowa's much-anticipated women's wrestling schedule was released on Monday, highlighted by two home events at Carver Hawkeye Arena and participation at the Soldier Salute just down the road at Xtream Arena. While Iowa women will celebrate its first year of wrestling, the University of Northern Iowa's men's program released its schedule for its 100th collegiate season. Campbell also announced its schedule, as did Division II Fairmont State. -On Wrestling Changed My Life, Ryan Warner talks with Jim Gibbons about his project, The Dual, which is being screened around the midwest. The Dual chronicles what Gibbons believes is the best college wrestling dual meet of all-time. A multi-part series, this is going to be something you want to check out.-United World Wrestling President Nenad Lalovic conveyed that the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India will be lifted as soon as the federation conducts free and fair elections. The global body has not set any deadline for this, but emphasized that the suspension will remain in place until such elections are held and a democratically elected managing committee is installed. Lalovic further noted that the lifting of the suspension is contingent on the elections being held democratically and without any complaints from stakeholders. The suspension came as a result of WFI's failure to conduct the necessary elections, a situation that has seen the federation embroiled in controversies, leading to significant postponements of the elections.-There is some positive news coming out of India though. Antim Panghal, the young wrestling sensation from India, has made waves in the wrestling community. With multiple accolades including two Junior World Wrestling championships, and a recent silver at the Asian Championships 2023, Panghal's rivalry with seasoned wrestler Vinesh Phogat and her journey to secure an Olympic quota for India in Paris 2024, exemplify her rising stature in the sport. Now, as one of the most distinguished voices in broadcasting, he continues to cast a significant influence over the sport. In this enlightening conversation, we unpack the magic behind Jim's docuseries "The Dual," which transports viewers back to the adrenaline-charged atmosphere of the 1986 Iowa vs. Iowa State dual meet. A historic event where an incredible lineup of athletes clashed, culminating in 16 National Championships that were eventually won by the 20 competitors featured. Jim graciously takes us on a walk down memory lane, sharing vibrant snapshots of the personalities that graced the mat during this iconic dual. But it doesn't end there, as we delve deep into the veins of the fierce Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry, a competition steeped in tradition, passion, and unyielding spirit. We also navigate through the evolving tapestry of the sport of wrestling, witnessing the myriad of changes that have occurred over the years, through Jim's experienced eyes. As a coach with a proven track record, Jim opens up about his strategy for instilling a kind of irrational confidence in his wrestlers. And of course, no discussion with Jim would be complete without tapping into the well of wisdom he acquired from the legendary figure in the wrestling world, coach Dan Gable.

James Gibbons, Stanford Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus, spoke in the Abernethy Emeriti/ae Lecture Series. In his talk he traces the origins and uses of the Tutored Video Instruction (TVI) process, which he developed in 1972 while serving on President Nixon’s Science Advisory Council. Originally designed to teach Stanford electrical engineering graduate courses to Silicon Valley engineers at off-campus locations, Gibbons outlines the positive learning outcomes achieved through TVI and DTVI (Distributed TVI) as well as the elements contributing to that success, including the importance of tutor selection and training. He describes subsequent uses of TVI in very different settings: teaching computer literacy to children of migrant farm workers and teaching emotional skills to youth in a variety of school and juvenile justice settings across the country. Gibbons mentions that the TVI methodology was also used in a Stanford poetry course and adopted by faculty at the Autonomous University of Guadalajara.

Dave McConnell on women in politics ~ "They have gotten a raw deal in politics, in the Senate, in the House, for a long, long time and I'm glad to see things are changing." Dave McConnell, Capitol Hill Reporter for WTOP and host Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: I'm Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town and I'm getting a wonderful, wonderful, opportunity to talk to an old friend. He's really not old but he's been around longer than I, almost as long as I have, Dave, which is pretty spectacular. Dave McConnell, the star of WTOP, the number one reporter on the Hill. You've been there longer than anybody. Dave McConnell: I probably have by now on the radio television side. I think there are a couple of print guys that have longer times in than me. Hill Reporting | Joe McCaffrey Andy Ockershausen: You have ingrained yourself so much into that Hill, and I have been a fan of yours since. Thank God you got that good WMAL training before you went out on the street and work with a lot of professionals. And all these years you work with a lot of pros. It helps you, David. Dave McConnell: It does. Andy Ockershausen: It keeps you on your toes. Dave McConnell: Absolutely. Andy Ockershausen: I'm sure you remember it was our friend, Joe McCaffrey. Dave McConnell: I do indeed. Andy Ockershausen: He got into the newspaper business and we lost track of him. I don't know. He died or whatever. He was down in Virginia somewhere. Dave McConnell: When I first came to the Hill I used to see Joe, yeah. He was still there. Eddie Gallagher | Mark Evans Andy Ockershausen: Yeah. Well, I think he got out of the army here and didn't leave. WTOP, one of my favorite sounds. I remember when it was WJSV. I remember the lineup was Eddie Gallagher. Who was following them? The morning man was, oh God. Well Eddie did that moonlight show. What was it called? Dreams or something? Dave McConnell: Well, there was- Andy Ockershausen: Mark Evans! Dave McConnell: Yeah, that's right. Mark Evans. Housewives protectively. Andy Ockershausen: HPL, right? Dave McConnell: Yeah. Andy Ockershausen: I was a CBS guy and I was at his funeral and had a chance to talk about him a little bit. Jim Gibbons, who had been working for us along with. But WTOP was such a powerhouse with that 1,500 signal and nobody could compete with that. Then FM came along. Then FM was made by WTOP-FM, by switching at FM station. They bought the station, right? Dave McConnell: Yes. Andy Ockershausen: WGMS. Dave McConnell: Our original FM station, we gave away to Howard University. Andy Ockershausen: And Mrs. Graham? Dave McConnell: Well, Katherine Graham, Larry Israel, was running the station then I'm thinking. Larry Israel | WTOP Went All News and WMAL Made Deal for Games Andy Ockershausen: Yeah. I was talking about Larry, paying him a compliment because I got to know Larry quite well because it was a small town then, Dave. Ain't that way anymore. Dave McConnell: No. Andy Ockershausen: You knew everybody, everybody knew you. Management, talent, whatever. We were all together, you know the hangouts were the same; the Dancing Crab, or Duke's Restaurant, or whatever it was. It doesn't exist anymore, the camaraderie. But Larry Israel called me one day and said that they were broadcasting Maryland football, and he said, this is like 1968-70, said, "We're going all news and I'm not gonna be able to do any more play-by-play because you can't do both. You can't be all news and do play-by-play." It was his theory. Dave McConnell: Mm-hmm (affirmative) Andy Ockershausen: And I supported that because he's right, you can't have a baseball game on and say you're doing all news. And he couldn't have a football game. So, he tipped us and we called over there and made a deal to take the games off of WTOP. And that's when people were close, I don't think that exists in radio anymore. Lot of competitiveness, but work together. Dave McConnell: Well, yeah,

John Bowis, President/Owner Chevy Chase Acura in studio interview with Andy Ockershausen Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town. As a special guest on Our Town, the man whose family epitomizes Our Town. In 1939, the Bowis family started Chevy Chase Cars. I don't know what it was called then, but- John Bowis: Chevy Chase Motor Company. Andy Ockershausen: ... John Bowis is now the surviving member of the Bowis family. He's a father of five, and they're all gonna be running the business someday. John Bowis: Maybe. Andy Ockershausen: John, welcome to Our Town. John Bowis: Thank you, Andy. Andy Ockershausen: You know, we have such a relationship with your family before you were born of course, with your grandfather, Art, and Jim Gibbons, who was my guru- John Bowis: Right, good friends. Andy Ockershausen: ... and he led me in this business, my mentor, and we started together. So, the name Bowis always meant a lot, but I didn't know about the automobile business, because I thought they were in the real estate business. John Bowis: Right. Andy Ockershausen: Were they not? Automobile Business is Foundation for Art Bowis Legacy John Bowis: The automobile business is what allowed my grandfather to invest in real estate, so real estate was his second job, but the automobile business is what brought him to the table. Andy Ockershausen: But, when you opened, Bethesda, it was not like Bethesda now. John Bowis: Not at all, not at all. Andy Ockershausen: In 1939, I've seen pictures. John Bowis: 1939. So, in 1939, my grandfather was working at a Chevy store downtown in D.C. Most of the automobile dealerships- Andy Ockershausen: Was in downtown Washington- First Came NIH and the National Navy Medical Center John Bowis: ... they were called agencies back then, were located in D.C. There were very few dealerships in the suburbs, but my grandfather wanted to work for himself, and he was in sales, and there was another friend of his, Bob Suddith, Sr., they decided to partner together and go open up a Chevrolet store some place. They could have gone in any direction outside of the city, and my grandfather realized, or noticed, that the government opened up two locations in Bethesda just the year prior. One was NIH, National Institutes of Health. The US government bought the- Andy Ockershausen: Golf course, right? John Bowis: ... bought the golf course. And also the Wilson farm. It was the Wilson farm, Wilson Lane. Dr. Wilson. It was a long-time Bethesda family. The federal government bought the Wilson farm. They bought the Woodmont Golf Course. And then across the street, they opened up ... they broke ground on the National Navy Medical Center, which is now Walter Reed. My grandfather decided to go out to Bethesda and scope out property, and he landed on this property right next to the old Bethesda Theater. It used to be the Boro Theatre. Andy Ockershausen: I remember it very well. Then came Chevy Chase Motor Company John Bowis: That whole block was owned by a guy named Sidney Lust, who had a number of movie theaters. That was his business. Sidney Lust's idea was, open up a movie theater and that would be the anchor, and then he'd have a strip center around it. There was parking out back and so forth. Well, this was 1938, 1939, and it was still the height of the recession, and he couldn't get the retail center concept going, so my grandfather went out to look at part of that property. He and Bob Suddith walked the property for almost an hour, and my grandfather said, "This would be a fantastic place for a dealership.", and his partner said, "Yeah, but we've been here for almost an hour, and not a single car has driven by." Janice Iacona Ockershausen: The good old days.

Goodwill Industries helps people reach their full potential through education, skills training, and leveraging business to have a sustained impact. “The power of goodwill isn’t the stores, it’s the stories of the people…It’s about dignity and the power of work,” explains Gibbons. For d’Arabian, poverty is personal. “I know what it is to be in a classroom hungry, and I know what it is to be in a classroom not hungry. I choose not hungry.” Her background echoes the Goodwill model. As a nine-year-old, she was getting free school lunches on an IOU system knowing she would never be able to repay her debt, when one day a secretary proposed that she help serve the school lunches in order to get hers for free. “That little gesture… really changed the trajectory of my entire life. I felt a sense of efficacy and belonging and pride. I went in there and put that hair net on every day with a sense of joy in my heart,” she says. Gibbons notes that her story speaks to hope. “When there’s a certainty that you’ll be nourished, you can then build on that hope… Absent that, all of the other stuff is really tough to overcome.” As the first blind graduate of Harvard Business School, Gibbons has tackled his own challenges. “I hope that through my work and who I am that it offers a level of hope that no matter what your disability or barrier to opportunity is, you can overcome that. It takes a little bit of tenacity and… stick-to-itiveness.” Goodwill is a networked association of autonomous organizations and the model relies on each one having the authority and flexibility to meet the needs of their own communities. “What are the needs? What are other organizations in the community doing? How do you close the gap? What are the opportunities? … We’ve got to meet the individuals where they are so that the Goodwill programming can be made meaningful to them in terms of their life goals,” he says. Drawing from her own experience, d’Arabian notes, “That’s something we forget…people want to work, they want to belong.” Share in this heart-felt and personal conversation about hope and helping people help themselves.

How have the growing demands for “high-performance nonprofit” impacted some of the oldest philanthropic organizations in the United States? In this panel discussion, the CEOs of three organizations reflect upon the speed and tact with which they must adapt their strategies and directions in a new century. Peter Goldberg opens on the importance of fostering a culture of innovation, so that one might effectively bridge the gap between a “high touch” and a “high tech” strategy. Cathy Tisdale discusses both the value of having an iconic brand and the potential pitfalls of overextending legacy procedures. Jim Gibbons emphasizes the need for reinvention in nonprofit, such that you can remain relevant to the communities that you serve. Leadership 18 members Peter Goldberg, Cathy Tisdale, and Jim Gibbons were invited by the Center for Social Innovation’s Public Management Program and the Center for Leadership Development and Research at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. https://ssir.org/podcasts/entry/goldberg_tisdale_gibbons_leadership_trends_of_the_21st_century
