A secondhand store in the north Twin Cities suburb of Arden Hills may be forced to shut down or relocate after finding out zoning laws ban thrift stores in certain areas of the city. Odds & Ends Again is a resale storefront that helps seniors downsize and sell items they no longer need. The owner, Brett Foss says he didn't realize the zoning rules for his store would be different than other retail spaces.Arden Hills mayor David Grant told the Minnesota Star Tribune the city had given Foss all the information he needed about city zoning rules. Joining me for a wider conversation about city zoning and the impact it has on communities is Evan Roberts. He's an assistant professor with the University of Minnesota and is leading a project called the Minnesota Zoning Atlas.

More than 40 million Americans have left religion behind in the past 25 years. However, that hemorrhage isn't spread evenly across all religions. The most recent data from the Pew Research Center show the number of Muslims in this country are growing. Turns out, the number of converts to Islam is roughly equal to the number of people leaving the religion. Some Muslim leaders here in Minnesota have noted they've seen a spike in interest in Islam in recent years and have worked with a higher number of people converting to Islam.Tamara Gray is founder of the nonprofit Rabata, where she teaches women about Islam in Arden Hills. Imam Makram El-amin is based at Masjid An-Nur, a mosque in north Minneapolis. They joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer on the show.

When Eliza Gazett came out as transgender, she felt energized in a way she didn't expect.“My initial plan was to question myself until I felt comfortable enough to be seen by the world,” she said. “But once I was fully out, I didn't want to hide myself anymore.”She felt called to channel that energy into something positive, something that would help other trans people, specifically trans kids. “There's so much working against them right now that any amount of support is huge for them,” said Gazett, who is 31 and lives in Roseville. Her therapist told her about a local program called QUEERSPACE collective where she could be a mentor to a young LGBTQ person. It seemed like a perfect fit.The free program matches Twin Cities area LGBTQ youth with LGBTQ adults for connection and support through meetups two to three times per month. Many queer and trans kids have very few or no LGBTQ adults in their life, which can be isolating and discouraging. QUEERSPACE seeks to fill that gap. What started out as an MBA project idea for founder and executive director Nicki Hangsleben turned into a full-fledged operation. QUEERSPACE collective turns two next month, and will soon expand its reach to St. Cloud.“I was seeing a lot of statistics around mental health challenges that the LGBTQ youth in our community are facing,” she said. “I started looking around to see what type of mentorship programs explicitly existed for our community and found that of 5,000 mentorship programs across the country, there were maybe five that focused on LGBTQ youth.”In an annual survey on LGBTQ youth mental health released in 2022, The Trevor Project found that 45 percent of LGBTQ youth had seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. It also found that young LGBTQ people who have accepting community, affirming spaces or social support from family or friends reported significantly lower rates of attempting suicide in the last year. Advocates and experts say these struggles aren't inherent to being queer or trans — they're the effect of widespread mistreatment and stigma, compounded with anti-LGBTQ legislation passing in an increasing number of states, much of which is targeted at trans youth.“Creating these networks of support reduces anxiety, depression and helps the young person feel like they have an outlet and a place to show up where they can be their authentic self,” Hangsleben said. “Anytime we can show up to be ourselves and our whole selves… it feels good.”Gazett applied and got matched with 15-year old Lily Mouw, a ninth-grader at Mounds View High School in Arden Hills who is also trans. Over the course of a year the two have developed a tight friendship through weekly outings like visiting the zoo, playing board games or just chatting on walks in the park. “They can talk about queer identity and queer experiences and journeys, but for the most part, the mentees are just looking to hang out with a queer and trans adult who is living their life,” said Soua Thao, who manages the Twin Cities mentoring program. “Just having an adult who they can ask questions to and see someone who's thriving and living — that they can someday become someone like them, too.”It turned out Gazett and Mouw had a lot in common — they both love nature, animals, conservation, video games and hockey. Gazett said she sees her younger self in Mouw.Earlier this month the two cheered on the Minnesota Wild along with a group of mentor-mentee pairs at the team's Pride night. And Mouw has gotten to see Gazett on the ice as part of Team Trans, the only ice hockey team in Minnesota made up solely of transgender and nonbinary players.“Eliza has helped me through a lot,” said Mouw. “Whenever I just need to talk, I usually talk to Eliza about it.”Mouw, like Gazett, came out as trans relatively recently and felt depressed and unsupported at her middle school. Then she found QUEERSPACE. Mouw said getting connected with Gazett turned things around for her. She now has an adult in her life who truly understands what she's going through and is available to talk and encourage her through it. “I feel more safe around Eliza than most people,” said Mouw. The benefits go both ways.“There have been days where I haven't been feeling 100 percent myself when we've been hanging out,” Gazett said. “It helps me find a best version of myself through helping her.”QUEERSPACE welcomes youth 12-17 and mentors over 25. The program has brought together 34 pairs so far — its longest standing duo has been meeting weekly for over a year and a half. Mentors complete an extensive application including an interview and are required to complete training and commit to the mentorship for a year. Demand is high. QUEERSPACE currently has a growing waitlist of LGBTQ kids hoping to be paired with mentors. Pairs are matched based on what the mentee is looking for in a mentor. Thao tries to find overlap in identity and interests and “then I go off of vibes and make sure that's right, too.” The mentor and mentee don't need to share the same identities, but mentees often request mentors with similar backgrounds.Thao said QUEERSPACE is looking for more mentors of color and trans mentors of color, as well as mentors who are into the same activities as the mentees — notably, indoorsy ones.“We have a good group of mentors who love the outdoors, and a lot of our mentees love video games and love punk rock and thrifting and all that,” Thao said. “I'm trying to find mentors who have those interests.”To serve those waiting for a mentor of their own, QUEERSPACE is starting to offer group mentoring, beginning this spring. For six weeks, 12 mentees and three to four mentors will take part in group activities, discussions, art projects and more. Thao compares the concept to a community class, except it will be free. QUEERSPACE requires mentees get permission from a parent or caregiver to be part of their programs because they're spending one-on-one time with an adult out in the community. That means LGBTQ youth without family support can't access the programming, and Thao said that those are the young people who probably need this type of support the most. The organization is looking for a building to rent in Minneapolis to open an LGBTQ youth center, where even queer and trans youth without that family support could drop-in. Hangsleben also wants QUEERSPACE to be a resource for families who might relocate to Minnesota seeking a better environment and community for their LGBTQ child.“We hear from our mentors all the time, ‘I wish I had this growing up,' or ‘I want to support this person because I didn't have that growing up,'” said Thao. That's the case for Gazett, who said it's one of the reasons she wanted to participate.“Something like this wasn't around when I was young,” said Gazett. “I think if I had that amount of visibility and support, I would have been more comfortable coming out at a younger age.”Resources for LGBTQ youth and familiesQUEERSPACE collectiveRECLAIMFamily Tree Clinic's youth drop-in programTransforming FamiliesThe Trevor Project: 1-866-488-7386, or text 678-678This story is part of In Focus, an MPR News initiative exploring solutions to issues impacting Minnesotans.

If you spent time over the holidays with your aging family members-parents or grandparents-you may have noticed that they need a little more help with self-care, hygiene, or simply getting around. Women over 40 generally become the caretakers in this situation and they may not know that options are available to help keep our relatives safely at home as long as possible or know when it's time to consider independent or assisted living. Alicia Harmon talks with Kim about these options, including respite care that can help keep everyone safe and happy as they age in place. She offers ways to start those tough but necessary conversations that most of us don't really want to have. These are the links to the resources that Alicia mentions during this conversation. Meteorologist Mike Augustyniak for WCCO Television Weather. Friday, May 21, 2021. This morning much widespread rainfall so this is isolated and it really is a case of the haves versus the have-nots right now the Northwest Metro has no rain and the Central and Southeast in metro metro does have rain in this is a thunderstorm that bears watching we're picking up a potential at one point and maybe still has a little bit of small hail with it this storm is moving to the north east at 17 miles an hour to Little Canada and Arden Hills will be impacted by this in the next 10 minutes or so that Massage Heights and Shoreview shortly thereafter just sort of drifting Northeast word no warning on it just wanted to give you a heads-up and again there will be some more localized downpours popping up from time to time later today had a little farther south and east Mineola when else worth Wisconsin Owatonna Faribault all have some scattered showers or downpours either in or near your communities and more off to the South and Southeast as well in the warmer it is temperature see or climbing quickly through the seventies headed up into the mid-eighties before the day is out and I do think some of this dryer are will start to erode the cloud deck that's still across Eastern Minnesota as we go through the afternoon into the evening and so we should see a gradual increase in sunshine but also we're going to keep that chance for a few popup showers thunder showers are downpours in the forecast this week have through I really the dinner hour so not everybody will stay dry through the dinner hour but almost all of us will and then if we head toward Sunset & Beyond Skies start clear out pretty well overnight tonight I think we'll see some low clouds redevelop particularly from the Twin Cities on south and east and some localized dense fog tomorrow morning so tomorrow could be a bit of a slow starter but I am optimistic that tomorrow will be the sunniest day even if of The Weeknd size today again ranging from 87 + Fargo to 84 in Marshall so the warmest there will be in that sunniest area I just showed you was there along the North Shore and across Wisconsin in Southeastern Minnesota or Skies will stay here in the Twin Cities about 81 overnight low is 52 will be in the sixties again so pretty steamy you'll need or want the air conditioning and even though we may start with some overcast guys in a few communities I think that low cloud cover will burn off will see a mix of sun and clouds forecasting mid-80s from Alec to Wilmer to Glencoe the Twin Cities but there is a chance that a few of these communities here like say Appleton or Chicago or martial or Montevideo could hit 90 tomorrow and that will happen with a fair amount of humidity so it's going to be feeling quite hot even up into Northern Minnesota I mentioned this Cabin Country warm and humid tomorrow with scattered thunderstorm quiet morning anytime after about 2 or 3 will be a week front in through here and then is we had through the evening into the overnight that front makes it over toward the Twin Cities and then sort of stalls out so Sunday will be the cloud of your day the more unsettled day and there will be a chance for some scattered thunderstorms developing as we had to the afternoon into the evening dropping that chance from northern Minnesota more into the I-94 corridor and yes there is a chance for severe weather continue as we have through the weekend in any of the green shaded area marginal chance for some isolated Hale cells perhaps some damaging wind gusts and then is that cool front gets a little closer to a Sunday we're going to have to increase the chance for severe weather everywhere this is right now or one out of five on our severe weather threat scale that maybe that threat looks like it could be increased if we get a little closer to Sunday so please keep that today in mind Monday it's back to the mid-eighties unsettled and humid still but Tuesday Wednesday and perhaps look lovely as we lose the humidity and it at least for a few days the rain chances See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Good morning, you're listening to the Daily Apple, your source for the latest in Education News. I'm your host Jim Kent, the date is December 13, 2019. Before we get into the news of the day, I'd like to take a moment to thank our sponsor, VictoryXR. VXR's award-winning content, helps kids experience science and engineering in a way that they have never been able to before, while making sure to cover everything within the NextGen Science Standards, and they've made it accessible on every kind of VR headset you can think of. To find out more, check out VictoryXR.com But now for the news.NPR reports that documents they've obtained shed new light on a bitter fight between defrauded student borrowers and U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos.These borrowers — more than 200,000 of them — say some for-profit colleges lied to them about their job prospects and the transferability of credits. They argue they were defrauded and that the Education Department should erase their federal student loan debt under a rule called "borrower defense."DeVos disagrees: She says most student borrowers still got value from these schools and deserve only partial relief from their federal loans. Now, internal Education Department memos obtained by NPR show that career staff in the department's Borrower Defense Unit came down firmly on the side of defrauded borrowers.Until now, these internal department memos have been hidden from public view. Lawmakers had previously requested access to them, but DeVos and her department refused to hand them over. DeVos has argued for years that the Obama administration's full-relief interpretation of the borrower defense rule was too lenient. DeVos' new plan is the department's second attempt at resolving the more than 200,000 outstanding borrower defense claims. The first attempt was blocked in May 2018 by Magistrate Judge Sallie Kim of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Devos testified yesterday, in front of congress to defend her plan.https://www.npr.org/2019/12/11/786367598/betsy-devos-overruled-education-dept-findings-on-defrauded-student-borrowers According to The New York Times, An executive order signed Wednesday that extends civil rights protection to Jews is likely to strengthen the hand of President Trump's Education Department, where the department's civil rights chief has been investigating some of the nation's most elite universities for anti-Jewish bias. Mr. Trump, at a Hanukkah celebration at the White House, opened the door on a case-by-case basis to essentially defining Judaism as a race or national origin, not just a religion, under the Civil Rights Act. His order also expanded the definition of anti-Semitism to include some anti-Israel sentiments. Both moves had been pushed by Kenneth L. Marcus, the head of the Education Department's Office for Civil Rights, for years. Jewish groups were largely supportive, with some liberal organizations opposing it. Palestinian rights groups were incensed. The issue arises as campuses have become hotbeds of racial and cultural strife. In a 2018 report, the Anti-Defamation League found an 89 percent increase in reported episodes of anti-Semitism on college campuses in one year, as well as a steady rise in white-supremacist propaganda. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/11/us/politics/trump-anti-semitism-judaism-nationality.htmlAccording to Fox61 in Connecticut, The Killingly Board of Education voted late Wednesday night to temporarily not have a mascot given the different opinions on whether it should be the Redmen or the Red Hawks. Before that vote, the board initially voted for the Redmen and that is when most of the crowd left in an uproar. Those who oppose Redmen said the name is racially inappropriate and disrespectful to the Native American culture. State Police and Killingly Police made their presence known at the Board of Education meeting knowing the crowd has been aggressive in past meetings.Killingly High School's mascot was formerly known as The Redmen. In July, the Board of Ed decided to allow a mascot change. In October, students voted to change the mascot to the Red Hawks. However, the controversy returned when Newly-elected Republicans on the board decided to change it back to the Redmen. Members with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe said the Redmen image is offensive because it displayed a Native American in a headdress and feathers were adorned on the helmets of football players. A special meeting will be held next Wednesday to further discuss this controversy.https://fox61.com/2019/12/12/crowd-leaves-in-an-uproar-as-killingly-board-of-education-votes-not-to-have-mascot/The Dothan Eagle reports that Alabama's State Department of Education voted to replace Common Core math standards on Thursday. Suzanne Culbreth, former Alabama Teacher of the Year (2013), and member of the Math COS committee, said she believes the hard work and dedication that went in to developing the new math standards will bode well for Alabama students and their educational achievement for years to come. Alabama joins eight other states that do not teach Common Core state standards, either because they never adopted or have since replaced or repealed it. https://www.dothaneagle.com/news/education/alabama-state-department-of-education-vote-to-replace-common-core/article_e075fad9-4f99-576c-9981-50dfdd5dbeda.htmlIn Toronto, the Globe News Wire reports that four unions representing teachers and education workers across Ontario's publicly funded education system have filed court challenges against the Ontario government's Bill 124, the Protecting a Sustainable Public Sector for Future Generations Act. Given the content and timing of the legislation, in the midst of negotiations for the renewal of collective agreements in the education sector, the unions contend that Bill 124 is a direct attack on free collective bargaining in the education sector, and a violation of sections 2(b) and 2(d) of the Charter, which guarantee freedom of expression and the freedom of association. In addition, they believe the legislation violates the duty of the Crown to bargain in good faith. The Ontario government has said that the purpose of the bill, which would moderate the compensation of public employees, is to “ensure public sector compensation reflects the province's current fiscal reality.”https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2019/12/12/1959885/0/en/Education-Unions-Launch-Charter-Challenge-Against-Ford-Government.htmlAccording to reporting by the AP, The University of Phoenix and its parent company have agreed to pay $50 million in cash and cancel $141 million in student debt to settle allegations of deceptive advertisement brought by the Federal Trade Commission. The deal, announced Tuesday, settles a dispute over an ad campaign the for-profit college launched in 2012 touting partnerships with companies including Microsoft, Twitter and Adobe. It suggested the school worked with those companies to create job opportunities for students, even though there was no such agreement, investigators found. The Federal Trade Commission said the settlement is the largest the agency has ever obtained against a for-profit college. Under the settlement, the University of Phoenix and Apollo will cancel all remaining debt for students who first enrolled between Oct. 1, 2012, and the end of 2016. Letters will be sent to borrowers saying they no longer owe payments to the school. The school is also barred from making false claims about its relationships with companies or employers. The FTC says the $50 million payment will be used to help consumers who were misled by the ads.https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/u-phoenix-agrees-cancel-141-million-student-loan-debt-n1099681 CBS Minnesota reports that Bethel University announced this week that it will cut administrative staff and faculty in order to deal with declining student enrollment. In a statement Tuesday, the Arden Hills-based Christian college says that staff cuts will be announced next month and that faculty cuts will be made public in April. Affected faculty will stay on until the end of the 2020-2021 academic year, the university says. Teach-out programs will be offered for students affected by the curriculum changes. Bethel did not say which departments would be affected by the cuts. Bethel says it's among many colleges across the nation facing financial difficulty due to the declining undergraduate enrollment numbers. https://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2019/12/11/citing-declining-student-enrollment-bethel-university-to-cut-staff-faculty/ And that rounds it up for todays headlines. Alright fine. I've been famously (infamously?) curmudgeon about all of the endless US Bank Stadium construction updates. I'm a big "skip the labor, show me the baby" sort of guy. But now that the baby has been born, I'm in love with this $1.1 billion dollar bundle of joy. We'll hop into some of the gritty details of the Minnesota Fightin' Vikings latest encampment this week.
