Today on Too Opinionated, we sit down with actress Susan Berger! One of her most memorable experiences was being cast in Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth. The film shot during Covid. And everyone involved was grateful to be a part of a truly magical experience. Susan's other films include Kajillionaire, Looks to Kill, The Dollar King, and the upcoming The Legacy of Cloudy Falls. Susan can be seen on Jury Duty on Amazon's Freevee, playing Barbara Goldstein. Jury Duty was a truly breath-taking experience, as all of the dialog was improvised around a set of premises that the cast were never sure would actually happen the way the writers and producers imagined them. The fact that that it came out so well is a tribute to production team's editing skills. Other TV appearances include roles in American Horror Story, Baskets, Mom, Criminal Minds, Bob Hearts Abishola, and Hunters. After studying improv and musical improv at UCB, Susan and her son Christopher Corbin formed a two-person improv group. Son of a Mother. Want to watch: YouTube: Meisterkhan Pod (Please Subscribe)

In this episode, Barry and Julia embark on the long, dark road that is Joel Coen's “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” While Barry loses his mind over the visual richness and fidelity to the source material, Julia admits that it's all Shakespeare to her and is annoyed by Barry's ease with iambic pentameter. Passages from both Shakespeare and “Clueless” are quoted here. Follow us on Instagram @soimarriedafilmcritic_podcast and please leave us a review.

Hail Macbeth! It was time for the Lodgecast to take in some theater with Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth. We were tipped off to an IMAX screening and jumped at the chance. We talk all things Shakespeare and Macbeth before we proceeded to this black & white adaptation. While the play is undoubtedly four bones, we had some differing opinions on this version as we hash out what is foul and what is fair about this Joel Coen film. It stars Denzel Washington as Lord Macbeth and Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth. Other actors in the mix are Bertie Carvel, Alex Hassell, Corey Hawkins, Harry Melling, Kathryn Hunter, and Brendan Gleeson.

In this episode, Hettie V. Williams is in conversation with Clifford Mason about Black Shakespearean actors and Denzel Washington as Macbeth. Williams is a Professor of African American history at Monmouth University and Mason is a celebrated playwright, actor, director, critic and author who has written 34 plays. He is also the author of Macbeth in Harlem: Black Theater in America from the Beginning to Raison in the Son (Rutgers University Press, 2020). Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth is the first film completed without his brother Ethan Coen and the film has opened to positive reviews. Mason discusses the fact that Black actors such as Ira Aldridge and Paul Robeson have mastered Shakespearean roles in America and the world for more than 100 years. Here is more critical of the Coen film and Denzel's role as Macbeth in that he sees the movie as largely failing at bringing the power of Shakespeare's words to life.

Joel Coen's "The Tragedy of Macbeth," currently streaming on Apple TV+, came in at number three on my ten best list for 2021. It's breathtakingly cinematic and delivers Shakespeare's play in a kind of stripped down, minimalist fashion that removes all excess props, scenery and even color. For a play whose language is soaked in blood, Coen boldly renders it in stark black and white. His adaptation is strikingly clean and crisp even as it is shrouded in fog and darkness. Coen, making his solo directing debut sans his usual collaborator and brother Ethan, gives us a version of the play that feels surprisingly fresh. So I'm excited to dive into the making of the film with two of its actors: Corey Hawkins and Alex Hassell. Cinema Junkie is on a season break but when something this good comes my way I will share a bonus podcast like this. I jumped at the opportunity to interview two actors from the film in part because Coen seems a bit of a mystery in terms of how he works. He doesn't give a lot of interviews and when he does, I often feel like he's pulling a con and can't be trusted to be telling the truth. But these actors offered some insights into Coen's process as a director and how he brought Shakespeare's play to vivid life on the screen. "What he's done is pack these visual images into the film; they sort of scorch your retinas," Hassell said. "But they are all born out of this thematic or subconscious level of the play, in a way that folds constantly back into the play and the tension of the play and the interior world of the play or the story rather than the language in a way that I think just thrums with tension."
In this week's record-setting 39th episode of the Book and Film Globe Week in Review podcast, Neal Pollack welcomes renowned Star Wars geek Scott Gold to talk about ‘The Book of Boba Fett‘. Neal and Scott, both of whom are still eight years old, are loving the extended looks that the series gives the rancor, the Tusken Raiders, the Twi'leks, and so much more. Scott marvels at how good Jennifer Beals, hidden from us all those years, still looks. And they both praise Temuera Morrison's fantastic performance as Boba Fett, the man himself. They're more divided on the space Vespa-riding “mods,' who seem transplanted from another franchise, but let's not forget that, at its core, this is a series for children.Speaking of not for children, Stephen Garrett comes by to talk about Joel Coen's ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth,' which no children are watching unless their parents are especially brutal home-school tyrants. Stephen has nice things to say about the performances and the occasional strokes of cinematographic genius. But this Macbeth often feels like Shakespeare by the numbers at best. And at worst, it aesthetically resembles a 1980s TV perfume ad.Finally, Paula Shaffer steps into the podcast box to eviscerate the new Hulu sitcom ‘How I Met Your Father,' which is like How I Met Your Mother, only without the star power, catchphrases, or good jokes. This will almost certainly not join the ranks of sitcom legend.Surprisingly, though, ‘Ghosts‘ on CBS has a better shot at longevity. This year's most popular new sitcom is about a bunch of wacky historical ghosts who haunt a millennial couple that inherit an old house. Paula praises the show's goofy, sweet charms, and she loves its star, Rose McIver.Let our podcast haunt you for days! Or at least for a half house. Thanks for listening.

Hello and welcome to The Movie Robcast. This is our penultimate London Film Festival wrap-up episode, and it's a bumper one. At 2:55 we review the new Benedict Cumberbatch film The Power of the Dog. At 11.20 we give our thoughts on the Cannes award winning and hard-hitting drama Nitram. At 20.05 Rob Wallis reviews Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Colman and Jesse Buckley. At 22.00 Rob Daniel tries to describe Dashcam, the outrageous new horror movie from Rob Savage, who splashed onto the scene last with the excellent frightener Host. Back to Rob W at 25.40 for Terence Davies' new movie Benediction, starring Jack Lowden and Peter Calpadi. Sticking with Rob W, at 27.55 he discusses Petite Maman, directed by Celine Sciamma, who previously made Portrait of a Lady on Fire. At 29.55 both Robs have fun reviewing Paul Verhoeven's wonderful nunsploitation movie Benedetta. Finally, at 35.00 the podcasting duo warm their hearts recounting King Richard, the film about Serene and Venus Williams' father that we think is going to nab Smith that Best Actor Oscar. Oh, we all give a quick review of Halloween Kills at 10.50. Spoiler: it's total rubbish. Phew! It's a bumper, mixed bag then. We hope you enjoy, and we'll see you next time for the final LFF episode, in which we'll look at Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. Corey Hawkins' training at the Juilliard School of Drama, and background in singing in church, set him on the path toward becoming what he calls “a well-rounded artist”—and he has a Tony, Emmy, and two SAG Award nominations to show for it! Speaking to Backstage, his go-to resource during post-grad years in New York City, Corey offers fellow actors plenty of valuable advice, particularly when it comes to auditions. “To go into a room and literally just have an opportunity to act, or sing, or dance, or do whatever you do, you get to showcase that and share it with somebody for that little bit of time. And that's a joy.” Born in Washington, D.C., Corey made his Broadway debut in “Romeo and Juliet,” which was followed by an award-winning revival of “Six Degrees of Separation.” After a Hollywood breakthrough in “Non-Stop,” he appeared on “The Walking Dead,” “24: Legacy,” and “Survive,” plus in “BlacKkKlansman,” “Kong: Skull Island,” and as Dr. Dre in “Straight Outta Compton.” This year is Corey's most impressive yet, starring on the big screen as Benny in Lin-Manuel Miranda's movie musical “In the Heights” and as Lord Macduff in Joel Coen's “The Tragedy of Macbeth” opposite Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand.
