June Havoc wore many hats during her long showbiz career - actress, singer, playwright, director, and more. The sister of legendary burlesque queen Gypsy Rose Lee, Havoc found her biggest successes on Broadway with appearances on the big and small screens in between acclaimed stage runs. In 1948, she married William Spier - "the Hitchcock of the airwaves" and longtime producer and director of Suspense - and she starred in several episodes of "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." We'll hear her today in "Stand-In" as she plots to steal the spotlight from an aging movie star (originally aired on CBS on June 12, 1947) and "Subway," where she plans to dispose of a longtime rival on the way home from work (originally aired on CBS on October 30, 1947). Plus, we'll hear her opposite Howard Duff as Sam Spade's latest client in "The Hot Hundred Grand Caper" (originally aired on CBS on September 19, 1948).

April and I talk Mother Rose. She was a pushy broad and they truly lived a gypsy lifestyle. Baby June who later became Dainty June ran away with a boy from the troupe at 13, we are not sure of real age. Mama June may have been involved in two murders, and definitely one attempted murder on Junes boy husband..Luckily the gun jammed..and there were no bullets or he would have been a goner. In November of 1947, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship of Suspense. Roma's last episode was on November 20th, 1947. Not since Joan Blondell vowed that she knew all the answers and the only thing worthwhile was dough have we seen a more vital queen of the rackets than June Havoc in The Story of Molly X (1949). Molly takes over a crime syndicate. She plans the heists, hires the muscle, and even joins them for the safe cracking. June Havoc was a performer from the age of two and grew up as a headliner in the vaudeville circuit. And boy could June write. I close the episode with a scene from her memoir about her first dance marathon, which lasted for four months. She's the definition of trouper.

This is a snippet from Breaking Walls Episode 96: Halloween On The Air (1943 - 1953) ___________ On July 12th, 1946 over the American Broadcasting Company, a new detective show took to the air starring a relatively unknown thirty-two year old actor named Howard Duff. The show’s lead character was one of America’s most famous fictional detectives: Sam Spade. Bill Spier, then at the helm of Suspense, was in charge of the production. Lurene Tuttle played secretary Effie Perrine. Six of the first thirteen episodes were adapted from Hammett originals. The rest were written by Bob Tallman and Joe Eisinger. In the fall of 1946 as the final episode of the ABC summer replacement Spade series was airing, production of the show moved to CBS. Wildroot remained the sponsor. CBS felt that Edger Bergen’s ventriloquist act had grown stale on NBC and aired Spade opposite his show at 8PM on Sunday. Edgar Bergen’s rating remained steady at 22.7 over the next two seasons, but The Adventures of Sam Spade jumped eight points to 17.8 in 1947. The October 31st, 1948 episode featured Lurene Tuttle doubling as a witch and Hollywood A-lister June Havoc as an uncredited lead.

This is a snippet from BW-EP93: Radio And The New York City Subway (1947 - 1975) ____ On July 21st, 1941, CBS’s pilot series, Forecast presented a potential nightclub comedy called “51 East 51,” starring Kay Thompson. In the early 1940s Kay Thompson was known as a musician, composer, actress, and writer. Her work on Forecast at CBS introduced her to director Bill Spier. The two were married in 1942. One of the other pilots produced on Forecast was Suspense. By 1947 the show’s rating had grown to 15.0. On Thursday nights at 8PM more people were listening to Suspense on CBS than any other show in the country. On October 30th, 1947, June Havoc guest-starred in “Subway.” Surprisingly, the next day, Roma Wines announced they were dropping their sponsorship. CBS indicated an alcohol brand would no longer be acceptable for the series. Roma’s last sponsored episode was on November 20th, 1947. For the next five weeks CBS broadcast Suspense on Friday evenings. In the fall of 1947, Bill Spier was simultaneously going through a divorce with Kay Thompson and an engagement with his new fiancé, June Havoc. Ms. Havoc appeared as a guest-star on Suspense four times between June and November, including in the last Roma Wines show.

In January of 1948, Suspense producer/director Bill Spier left the show. Roma Wines had cancelled their sponsorship in November. Suspense was in the midst of an ill-fated hour-long show experiment, hosted by Robert Montgomery. By January of 1948, Spier was engaged to June Havoc. They were married on January 25th, the day after Spier left Suspense. When the couple finished honeymooning, Spier looked for his next project. He found it on the American Broadcasting Company. On March 4th, 1948, ABC's production of The Clock was moved to Hollywood and turned over to Bill Spier. The first episode under Spier's direction was called, "Nicky." It was a story about a man on death row who has no plans on going to the great hereafter. Spier tabbed radio actors who'd go on to become household names in the guest-starring roles, like Elliott Lewis, Cathy Lewis, and William Conrad. All three are featured in this Spier-debut episode clip.

At the time, Bill and June had been married for 23 years and it was a guest-starring role on Suspense that introduced June to Bill. In Breaking Walls episode 66, we weave the history of radio's outstanding theater of thrills, Suspense, into an interactive story told by producer and directors William Spier, William N. Robson, and Elliot Lewis, and actors and actresses June Havoc, Cary Grant, Vincent Price, Hans Conreid, Howard Duff, Robert Taylor, and Cathy Lewis. Suspense aired on CBS Radio from June 17, 1942 to September 30, 1962. Over 900 of the 945 episodes survive, many in high quality. The production value for the shows between December of 1943 and June of 1954 was amongst the highest in radio. CBS featured Suspense in a prime-time time slot for over a decade. These shows offer the best scripts starring the best actors and actresses. They’re definitely worth a listen, especially with Halloween coming up. Cecily Gambrell began performing at the age of six, born from a theatrical family, and whose great aunts were Gypsy Rose Lee and June Havoc.Some of Cecily's other work includes acting on Desperate Housewives, and High Hopes for which she wrote the shooting screenplay and co-stars with Edward Furlong, Lacey Chabert, and David Faustino. She wrote and produced award-winning documentary Champion, profiling the life of actor and ex-convict Danny Trejo with director Joe Eckardt through The Film Emporium.
