We are replaying a previous podcast by Justin Knipper and Fumi Saito on Antonio Inoki. This is part three of a five part series on Inoki that was recorded early in 2022. There is a link to all five episodes after Justin's original summary. In the next installment of their profile series on Antonio Inoki, Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper continued covering Inoki's full in-ring career, this time focusing on years 1974–1980. After Inoki's (and Seiji Sakaguchi's) NJPW and Giant Baba's AJPW established deals with television channels, the rivalry between the two companies began heating up. Fumi and Justin talked about the hot time it was for pro wrestling Japan during the mid-'70s, the influence of television and print media at the time. The two also went over Inoki's inventive and bloody December 1974 vs. IWA champion Strong Kobayashi, Inoki's year-long feud with Tiger Jeet Singh, his famous hour-long bout with Karl Gotch-trainee Billy Robinson, and his series of matches with Andre the Giant. They also talked about Vince McMahon Sr.'s involvement with and appearances for NJPW at around this time, which subsequently led to NJPW and the WWWF's 11-year working relationship. The partnership would also lead to Inoki's international breakout bout against Muhammed Ali in what many would call the world's first MMA fight, which Fumi and Justin also covered in detail towards the end of the show. Jake Shannon and I talked about it all, because this man has many avenues to talk about. People who grapple know him as the man who has studied the most about Catch Wrestling straight from Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson and doing his best to keep it pure and true to its roots. Unconventional Athletes know him as the man who brought the Steel Mace to America in a time when kettle bells were the big movement. If you love books... Well you can find some of his books he has written. From Economics to catch wrestling, to politics. The shorter list is, What does this man not do? Biggest take away for me was for him entrepreneurship is less risky than a single job.. That stuck with me , because I never really thought about it in a sense of having many fires going and knowing when to tend to each fire when necessary. If all you have is one fire and it goes out, What do you do? He also mentioned once you become familiar with entrepreneurship, you learn how to make money anywhere. There is a good percentage of us that fall into that 1 secure job to give us our income for 40+ years. But the way Jake thinks is amazing with all of his previous and current endeavors. It really opened my eyes to much more in this world and what you can do to enjoy the things you do and live the life you wanted making money with the things you love. This episode was great to pick his brain and get to know this man with many ventures... After this episode check out what he is doing currently with some of his business' that I highly recommend. Also if your looking for other Catch Wrestlers, he named about 10+ in this episode and has connections pretty much anywhere to train and learn the Old School Way. No Holds Barred: A Tribute to Phyllis Lee, the First Lady of NHB

No Holds Barred with Eddie Goldman

On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents a tribute to one of the true pioneers in the sport once known as no-holds-barred fighting (NHB) and now known as mixed martial arts, Phyllis Lee. Coming from a background as a pro wrestler, she was one of the first fight managers in the earliest days of MMA, representing numerous fighters including Dan Severn, Ron Waterman, Gary Myers, Chris Lytle, Nathan Marquardt, Shane Carwin, Carlos Condit, and many others. Besides getting fighters in North American organizations such as UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting, she had a particularly close relationship for many years with the Pancrase organization of Japan. All over the world Phyllis Lee was known as the First Lady of NHB. After a bout with pneumonia, Phyllis Lee passed away Sunday, January 18, 2015, at age 76, while in her sleep and hospitalized. A memorial service for family and friends will be held Saturday, January 31, at her church in West Unity, Ohio. As a tribute to her, we are reposting an interview conducted with her in June 2006. In it, she explained how she got involved with MMA; why this grandmother from the Toledo, Ohio, area, had such a passion for the combat sports and the people involved in it; her connections with Pancrase and Karl Gotch; pro and amateur wrestling; some of the events which took place and fighters who fought at the time of this interview; and much more. The No Holds Barred theme song is called "The Heist", which is also available on iTunes by composer Ian Snow. No Holds Barred is free to listen to and is sponsored by: American Top Team. Whether you're a beginner or a champion, train with the champions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, boxing, wrestling, grappling, and mixed martial arts at American Top Team.
