On today's episode, we travel to 1943, and one of the earliest battles American soldiers fought with Nazi Germany, in the mountainous regions of Tunisia. There, the fortuitous arrival of artillery stemmed the tide after German forces broke through American defenses at Kasserine pass. But what might have happened if it all went differently?

Dans cette région connue pour sa culture de pommes de terre, ils se retrouvent à en acheter qui viennent d'une autre région et au prix fort. « C'est vraiment trop cher. On a compris qu'il y avait un manque sur le marché à cause de la sécheresse, mais c'est cher quand même », témoigne Hamza Baroumi, 70 ans et retraité.« C'est quoi ça ? Des pommes de terre à deux dinars le kilo, et en plus, elles sont cabossées et ne sont pas très bonnes », commente Mohamed, fonctionnaire de 60 ans, en tentant de choisir les tubercules les moins abîmés.Colère face à la flambée des prixLe maraîcher Saïd Ben Aissa n'a pas d'autre choix que de vendre ces pommes de terres qui viennent de Kasserine, au centre-ouest du pays, faute d'en obtenir des agriculteurs à proximité : « Écoutez, c'est simple, les pommes de terre au prix fixé par l'État, à 1 dinar 900, ce sont celles qui ont été récoltées dans la région et stockées depuis l'été. Celles qui sortent des frigos, comme on dit, sauf que celles-là, il n'y en a plus. Là, celles que je vends, ce sont les pommes de terre dites "nouvelles", qui viennent d'une récolte plus récente. Donc évidemment que c'est plus cher. »C'est la première année qu'un tel problème arrive. Ali Souini, agriculteur basé à Ras Jbel explique ses soucis de récolte : « Les deux dernières années ont été difficiles à cause du manque de pluie. Donc j'ai dû réduire mes parcelles de culture de pommes de terre, faute d'une bonne irrigation. Mais le problème, c'est qu'avec les contrôles, on est mis dans le même paquet que les spéculateurs si jamais on se fait arrêter sur la route. »Même discours au marché de Sidi Bahri, dans le centre-ville de Tunis, avec le vendeur d'oignons Moustapha : « Imaginez ici, tout le monde me connaît, je ne vends que des pommes de terre. Et là, je me retrouve à vendre trois pauvres oignons qui se battent en duel. Pourquoi ? Eh bien, parce que les agriculteurs qui ont des pommes de terre actuellement ne peuvent pas venir nous les vendre directement. Et nous, si on y va, on se fait attraper par la police. Résultat, je suis comme on pourrait dire au chômage depuis un mois. »La situation serait en voie de s'arranger depuis quelques jours. Resistance was minimal, but in Toulon, the French scuttled their fleet, destroying 77 ships to prevent Axis capture. In Tunisia, Axis forces established beachheads, while Allies, led by British Lt. Gen. Kenneth Anderson, pushed to preempt Axis reinforcements. The Allies advanced through strategic ports and airfields, engaging in intense skirmishes but facing stiff Axis resistance and Luftwaffe attacks. The Allies eventually stalled in battles like Djedeida, suffering losses from Tiger tanks and counterattacks by German Panzers. By December, fresh reinforcements on both sides set the stage for further battles. With Field Marshal Rommel's forces now retreating from Tripoli, Axis troops launched offensives like Operation Eilbote I, aiming to safeguard supply lines and control strategic passes, while the Allies regrouped and reinforced. In February 1943, the Axis offensive culminated in the Battle of Kasserine Pass. Axis forces, bolstered by German and Italian units, launched devastating assaults, routing the Allies and inflicting heavy losses in men and equipment. U.S. forces, notably unprepared, struggled to contain the attack but managed a defensive line near Thala and Tébessa with British assistance. The Kasserine debacle underscored Allied command failures, leading Eisenhower to restructure leadership. Generals Alexander and Patton assumed control, initiating reforms that set the Allies on a path to eventual success in North Africa.

En Tunisie, la richesse du patrimoine culinaire est méconnue, souvent à cause d'un manque de transmission et de communication faisant le lien entre les différentes régions du pays. Une exposition dégustation sur Tunis a rendu hommage à sept gouvernorats de la Tunisie. Quand des Tunisiens commencent à débattre des types de chermoula, une sauce utilisée dans la cuisine du poisson, les débats n'en finissent pas. Dans la maison du baron d'erlanger à Sidi Bou Saïd, des agriculteurs et artisans sont venus dévoiler des plats, ingrédients et savoir faires atypiques de sept régions de la Tunisie, comme Samia Guittour originaire de l'île de Djerba. « Alors voilà, j'ai cuisiné plusieurs plats de Djerba, vous avez le couscous avec du kadid, de la viande de mouton séchée, et puis un ragoût de citrouille et la fameuse chermoula » dit-elle. Elle fait découvrir des recettes héritées de son grand-père : « Ce sont des recettes de nos ancêtres. Mon grand-père était lui-même chef cuisinier, il m'a appris beaucoup et cuisinait pour les mariages et puis moi-même j'ai fait une formation de cuisinière pour continuer à préserver ses recettes. » En Tunisie, beaucoup ne connaissent pas toute l'histoire et la richesse du patrimoine culinaire, selon les régions. « Malheureusement, beaucoup de Tunisiens ne connaissent pas les traditions en fonction des régions, car chacune a vraiment sa spécificité, mais les oasis ont des caractéristiques spécifiques par exemple. Si vous prenez les dattes, tout le monde connaît une ou deux variétés, alors qu'il en existe plus de 250 différentes dans le pays avec chacune, leur morphologie et leur apport nutritionnel », explique Montassar, 28 ans, agriculteur et originaire de Metouia à Gabes. Hela Bennouche, chef d'entreprise, a organisé cette balade culinaire avec le soutien d'associations et du ministère de la Femme. « Vu la conjoncture économique très dure et très difficile du pays, nous avons pensé à soutenir et valoriser les produits des agricultrices, surtout des petites agricultrices dans les régions reculées de la Tunisie ». Pour elle, il faut davantage communiquer et sortir de la capitale : « Nous avons intérêt à communiquer autour de notre patrimoine culinaire, gastronomique, il y a des recettes que nous ne connaissons pourtant, c'est des recettes de nos grands-mères » De Gafsa en passant aussi les Kef et Kasserine, des régions souvent marginalisées et marquées par le chômage, près de 30 agriculteurs et artisans ont pu ainsi se faire connaître le temps d'une dégustation.

Local media reported that he was in his twenties and was struggling through tough economic times. But the horrifying act almost went unnoticed in Tunisia. Il y a 10 ans, l'étincelle des Printemps arabes jaillissait en Tunisie, à Sidi Bouzid, bourgade déshéritée du centre du pays où Mohamed Bouazizi, s'est immolé par le feu. 10 ans après, dans la région, la colère sociale ne s'est pas éteinte, bien au contraire. Et la crise sanitaire n'a fait qu'accentuer les symptômes. C'est par dizaines que les villes manifestent pour réclamer les emplois et investissements promis. Ils s'inspirent de la révolte d'El Kamour, près de Tataouine, où les jeunes, en menaçant de perturber la production de pétrole, ont fait plier le gouvernement. Il y a 2 mois à Sbeïtla dans la région de Kasserine, des émeutes ont éclaté après la mort d'un marchand, il dormait dans son kiosque lorsque les autorités sont venus le détruire. L'histoire bégaye. Comme à Tataouine, le site d’une compagnie pétrolière a été bloquée par les manifestants. Pour les 10 ans de la « révolution, de la dignité », un groupe de diplômés chômeurs a prévu un jour de colère. Pour Moez Hachani, un de ses membres de 33 ans, « dans cette région marginalisée, on ne profite pas des richesses, il n'y a aucune discrimination positive. On va donc manifester pour réclamer nos droits. » ► À lire aussi : Tunisie : tensions dans la région sinistrée de Tataouine Comme dans plusieurs autres régions déshéritées, ces jeunes attendent depuis des années que soient tenues les promesses d'embauche qui leur ont été faites par les différents gouvernements, faute de perspectives dans le secteur privé. « Moi, je suis comme tous mes camarades chômeurs. Ici, il n'y a que des emplois dans la fonction publique, rien d'autre, explique Moez Hachani. Pour l'instant, on vivote. À 33 ans, je suis encore célibataire et je vis avec ma famille. Certains sont au chômage depuis plus de 10 ans. D'autres sont l'unique soutien de famille. Nous sommes les victimes des politiques. Des politiques qui ne répondent pas à nos revendications : à savoir un travail, et la dignité. Les raisons-mêmes de notre révolution. » Le jeu politique en grande partie responsable Pour l'essayiste Hatem Nafti, auteur de De la révolution à la restauration, où va la Tunisie ? (Riveneuve 2019), le jeu politique au sommet est pour une grande part dans le marasme économiques de ces régions : « Parmi les chefs du gouvernement depuis 2014, donc la mise en place de cette nouvelle Constitution, il n'y en a aucun qui était élu député. Ce sont les partis qui se mettent d'accord pour mettre quelqu'un, généralement peu connu, qui n'a pas forcément fait campagne sur un programme aux législatives et qui se retrouve propulsé chef du gouvernement, tenu par des partis politiques qui sont là pour rester au maximum au pouvoir sans forcément avoir une vision pour le pays. Finalement, dans ces conditions, c'est très compliqué de mettre en œuvre un quelconque programme ou de commencer à changer le modèle de développement. » Voilà pourquoi, loin de reculer, le clivage régional ne fait que s'accentuer, le chômage et la pauvreté avec. Ils frappent un tiers de la population à Kasserine.

Bem como o rapto de centenas de alunos do ensino secundário na Nigéra ou ainda o aniversário de uma década após o início da revolta na Tunísia. Os diários franceses não deixam de abordar a situação da Covid-19 com a apreensão em torno do Natal enquanto se aguarda pela chegada da vacina. Um julgamento para a história, sintetiza em título o comunista "L'Humanité" a propósito do desfecho hoje do caso dos atentados que ensagrentaram a França em 2015. O alcance político dos ataques foi lembrado, não obstante serem homens a ter ali comparecido, escreve o diário. Um julgamento que durou três meses e meio. Nas páginas do vespertino independente "Le Monde" consta a Nigéria. De novo refém do Boko Haram, pode ler-se. E isto devido à reivindicação pela organização extremista do rapto de mais de 330 alunos do ensino secundário. Para alguns dos membros do Boko Haram ir à escola é pior do que um crime, é um pecado. Qualquer aluno seria equiparado a um infiel a quem se promete sofrimento, a morte por esfaqueamento ou baleamento. Este mesmo jornal interessa-se também pela Tunísia. Uma década após o início da revolta contra o regime de Ben Ali o país está dominado por uma paralísia política e por uma crise social. Quando se aborda a revolução as palavras que vêm à tona são "desencanto", "desilusão", ou "esperanças traídas". O enviado especial deste jornal a Kasserine, na Tunísia, alega que o comércio paralelo com a Argélia é um dos únicos meios de sobrevivência numa região sempre marginalizada com um desemprego massivo. Um órgão de informação que lembra ainda que em França foi pedida a pena perpétua contra um jihadista marroquino que em Agosto de 2015 tentou levar a cabo um ataque contra um comboio de alta velocidade de tipo Thalys, por milagre apenas duas pessoas ficaram feridas. Também este julgamento acaba agora de conhecer o seu desfecho. Passamos para o diário de esquerda "Libération" que dá destaque à situação na Etiópia. Abusos à porta fechada no Tigray, escreve o jornal. O "Libération" lembra que um porta-voz de Addis Abeba referia na semana passada que, sobre o caso, a Etiópia não precisa de baby sitter. A região nortenha, palco de um movimento rebelde, estaria a ser agora severamente controlada pelas tropas centrais. No católico "La Croix" fala-se dos preparativos para o Natal. Com as autoridades francesas a preconizarem uma semana de auto-confinamento antes da Consoada e do Natal em família. O governo apela à responsabilidade individual por forma a evitar um acréscimo das contaminações em torno da época natalícia. Precisamente acerca da pandemia o chefe do grupo de peritos franceses sobre a Covid-19 deu uma longa entrevista ao popular "Le Parisien". "É preciso aguentar com firmeza" afirma Jean-François Delfraissy, presidente do conselho científico. Ele afirma que o vírus vai continuar a circular até ao fim do inverno europeu. A chegada das vacinas não terá impacto no primeiro trimestre de 2021 e este será muito limitado ainda no segundo. Até conseguir-se imunizar os 22 milhões de franceses de maior risco serão necessários meses, até Abril ou Maio, diz Defraissy. Este mesmo jornal analisou a entrada em vigor na noite passada do recolher obrigatório nocturno em França. É o dia e a noite, escreve o jornal... contrariamente à véspera em pleno confinamento, mas sem recolher obrigatório, na noite passada as ruas ficaram às moscas a partir das 20 horas. Este mesmo jornal, noutro plano, refere que o Túnel do Canal da Mancha está saturado, mesmo antes da saída oficial do Reino Unido da União Europeia. O tráfego de camiões de mercadorias rumo à Inglaterra aumentou substancialmente levando a horas de espera para os motoristas. Terminamos com o conservador "Le Figaro" que, em manchete, refere que a proposta do presidente francês em organizar um referendo sobre o facto de se inscrever a luta contra as alterações climáticas na constituição gerou cepticismo junto dos partidos. O processo em causa seria demorado e incerto.

Episode 85: No Country for Young Men In this podcast, Karim Zakhour, PhD candidate in Political Science at Stockholm University focuses on the relationship between young men in the margins and the state in periods of transition. By looking at everyday experiences of the state, Zakhour argues that one aspect of the Tunisian democratic transition and the opening of the public sphere has been a widespread deconstruction of the state. Another aspect is the increased opportunity for viewing the failures of society and of the self. It is by no means the case that the young men only externalize their critical gaze; they also turn it inwards. This increased opportunities for, and expressions of, self-critique coexist with a widely noted and prevalent nostalgia for Bourguiba, Ben Ali, and ‘strong man’ leaders more generally. Zakhour attempts to understand young men’s ambivalent attitude towards the state; as both deconstructive and desired and seeks to understand how these seemingly contradictory tendencies coexist, but also how they feed each other. The interview is based on Karim Zakhour’s Doctoral research and fieldwork conducted in Kasserine and Gafsa. To that regard, he argues that it is only through an ethnographic approach that brings in the everyday that we can capture the complexities of state-citizen dynamics.
