Bay Area, 一度被称为 “the land of pimps and Panthers”. Bay Area hip-hop is “the product of pimps and hustlers just as much as activists and intellectuals”. Ear to the Street”(1993), “Gamers”(1996);诗人气质的 Mystic 在 Digital Underground 1998 年专辑“Who Got the Gravy?”中首次亮相,个人首张 “Cuts For Luck and Scars For Freedom” 发行于 2001 年,在其中真诚地剖析了很多深刻内容,让关于耻辱的话题在音乐中有表达的空间,制作人有 Zion I 的 Amp Live,Hieroglyphics 的 A-Plus, 以及 Shock G;街头狠大姐,有着 female player 气质的 Marvaless 和 Passion,推荐专辑: “Ghetto Blues”(1994) by Marvaless, “Baller's Lady”(1996) by Passion;1980s 末短暂出现的 Kimmie Fresh,敢于挑战当时代表男性皮条音乐的 Too Short,重写了女性视角的 “The Real Freaky Tales”,当然 Too Short 作为一名虚怀若谷有格局的老皮条客,与 Kimmie 也建立了友谊;90s-00s 时代的 Bay Area 地区还有很多女性 rapper 由于各种原因都没有留下作品,甚至在时代发展中销声匿迹毫无记录,只有在少数历史报道中我们会得知一些名字,但在本地社区中一直是受人尊敬的存在;Neo Soul 歌手 Goapele 的地下场景名作 “Even Closer”(2002)05. 影响极其深远的 Bay Area Underground Hip HopHieroglyphics 大家族出品质量稳定,尤其是 “3rd Eye Vision”(1998), “Full Circle”(2003) ,创始人 Del The Funky Homosapien 也是深受 P-Funk 影响的文化传承者,1991 年首张个人专辑 “I Wish My Brother George was Here”是明显的 P-Funk 致敬,其他作品另类气质独特也十分推荐:”Future Development”(1997), “Both Side of Brain”(1999);Del 与 Dan the Automator, DJ Kid Koala 的三人组合 Deltron 3030 同名专辑是一张制作与概念都水平很高的地下另类名作;Souls of Mischief 的 Hip Hop 历史教科书级别作品 “93 'til Infinity”,同名歌曲是 Bay Area 地下最具代表性的大名曲,它所传达的时代情绪和制作思路都令人叫绝;大家族中成员的个人作品都很推荐,Opio, A-Plus, Casual, Pep Love 没有难听的;来自 Sacramento 的 Blackalious 在我们之前的“Underground”话题单集中提到过,所属的团体 Quannum Projects 风格另类,元素丰富;06. Episode playlist:The Conscious Daughters - “Somethin To Ride To (Fonky Expedition)”Mystic - “Neptune's Jewels”Passion - “Where I'm From”Kimmie Fresh and The People - “The Real Freaky Tales The Girl Story”Marvaless - “Bring The Bomb”Del the Funky Homosapien - “Mistadobalina”Deltron 3030 - “Mastermind”Souls of Mischief - “93 'til Infinity”Hieroglyphics ft. Episode 1 of Remember the Time examines the independent nature of Bay Area hip-hop and how it eventually reached the mainstream despite having a different sound, delivery and cadence from mainstream rap of the time.  A big part of that sound, aptly called Mobb Music, was popularized by artists like E-40 and Mac Mall. The slow plodding bass heavy sound was instrumental in Bay Area hip-hop. It took a kid from Fairfield by way of Montgomery AL by the name of Rick Rock to bring his dance hi-BPM style to Bay music to transition from Mobb to Hyphy.  Hear from Keak da Sneak, Jake One, Mike Mosley, Ray Luv, CMG of the Conscious Daughters and more. Hosted, written and produced by Branden LSK. Additional production by Melissa Saenz Gordon. Engineering by Full English Post. Executive Producers include Peter Flax and Branden Peters. Remember the Time: The Hyphy Movement is a production of the Red Bulletin magazine.

On today's episode I speak with filmmakers Laurence Madrigal & Jason O'Mahony. Their new documentary WE WERE HYPHY just premiered at Cinequest 2022. Great film, great chat! Thanks for listening! Kyler -- Social and Web: WE WERE HYPHY Instagram: @wewerehyphy Website: www.wewerehyphy.com -- PRESS RELEASE: WE WERE HYPHY is delighted to announce its World Premiere as part of the prestigious Cinequest 2022 Film Festival. The music documentary captures the hugely kinetic Hyphy movement, and brings the sights and sounds of the San Francisco Bay Area's most influential musical movement of the past 30 years to life on the screen. This music documentary feature traces Hyphy's genesis on Bay Area streets and examines its influence with interviews from legendary figures such as Keak da Sneak and Mistah FAB to modern day artists such as Kamaiyah, Rafael Casal, P-Lo, and G-Eazy who grew up during the movement and were deeply influenced by it. Historical context is provided by columnists and academics such as Pendarvis Harshaw and Dr. Andrea L.S. Moore. “Hyphy had a massive influence on me as a teenager,” says Laurence Madrigal, director of WE WERE HYPHY. “I grew up in Antioch and Hyphy was everywhere. It was on the streets, in our cars, in the clothes we wore, and in the way we spoke. I've always wanted to share my love of Hyphy with the world and this film is a love song to the era!”

Cuzzo has had a very reflective week. Laryngitis is not fully cured but the show must go on. We talk about the passing of Nipsey Hussle and what we take away from it and how words can possibly sometimes escalate a situation. Is it time to stop the violence and get it together finally? A local shooting is discussed, the alcohol tax did not go through, Messy Marv, JT, Keak talk and if other bay area rappers should lend a helping hand. The homie Coco chimes in a bit, Docious the butt naked hustler? Huh? Take a look at some of the rides out here and you’ll immediately get the sense that a car is more than just a car.
