A lot of people are reluctant to go out in the cold during the winter season. It's a real shame, as there are many ways in which you can protect yourself from low or even sub-zero temperatures. You've probably been told it a million times since you were a kid, but it bears repeating: you need to wrap up warm! The clothes you wear outdoors trap warm air inside. A good starting point is wearing a cotton T-shirt to absorb sweat and thereby neutralise humidity, which can exacerbate feelings of cold. Then wear a sweater or warm jacket made of high-quality material like wool, cashmere or alpaca. Finally, a decent coat or windcheater on top, as well as a scarf, gloves and most importantly a woolly hat or beanie, as 30% of warmth leaves the body via the head. Does drinking hot drinks before going out help? How about when we actually get outside? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! It's soup season and this has got to be one of my absolute favourites because it's rich with flavour but so cheap to make!  Serves 1-2    Ingredients: 1 tablespoon each butter and oil  2 onions, sliced thinly (see note)  1 scant tablespoon plain flour  3 cups beef, chicken or vege stock (or water)  Splash of white or red wine (optional)  1 bay leaf  ½ tsp sea salt  ½ tsp brown sugar  Decent grind black pepper  1-2 thick slices of bread  ¼ cup grated cheese – gruyere is traditional but you can use any    Method: In a heavy pot cook the sliced onions on a medium heat in the butter and oil. Do this with the lid on to let them sweat down. After 5-7 minutes given them a stir (lower the heat if they are getting too brown) and keep covered and cooking for 10 more minutes. Stir the flour through the onions, add a splash of the stock and cook for 1 minutes until the flour has thickened then add the remaining ingredients. Simmer, lid on, for 20-30 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning.  To serve: Grill bread on both sides, top it with cheese and grill until cheese is melted then place on top of soup in a bowl. Enjoy! It's going to be the coldest weekend of the year so far. We already know that typical energy bills will be double what they were last winter. So everyone is looking for ways to use less electricity and gas at the same time as trying to stay warm. One solution is being offered by so-called 'warm banks' - places where people can go to keep warm if they're struggling to afford heating costs. The Warm Welcome campaign now has more than three thousand places open on its website and says last week alone 80 thousand people kept warm in one of them - up by more than a fifth on the previous week. We visit Widnes library and speak to the organisers of the campaign. If you're looking for somewhere to go to keep warm the website is https://www.warmwelcome.uk/ Losing your spouse or civil partner is always a difficult time financially - the funeral, paying bills and losing a second income all add to the stress. There is money from the government to help - totalling more than £4,000 for those without children and nearly £10,000 for those with. This Bereavement Support Payment was introduced in April 2017 and is paid to surviving partners who are under the state pension age of 66. We discuss how to get it and how to avoid missing out. A third of all bank and building society branches have closed in the last decade. One solution to this is a new expansion of banking hubs. Our reporter Clare Worden visits the opening of a new hub in East Yorkshire. And how to make sure you don't lose out on claiming a Cost of Living Payment to help with energy bills. Presenter: Paul Lewis Reporter: Clare Worden Researchers: Sandra Hardial and Star McFarlane Editor: Jess Quayle (First broadcast 12pm Saturday 10th December, 2022)

There are six items in Tynwald this week relating to Climate Change. Overall emissions to be reduced by at least 35% by 2030 and reduced by at least 45% by 2035. There's a ban on microbeads and single use plastic, including plates, bags, straws, stirrers, cutlery, and cups; and a there's a clear plan and road map for us to become carbon neutral by 2050. There are benefits to all this too including better insulated buildings which are cheaper to keep warm, reducing energy bills and fuel poverty, reduced flood risk, cleaner water and air. Welcome to the Connected To The Land Podcast, sponsored by Mr. Heater. In this episode, host Ian Sherwood talks to Jennifer Spencer, a 'too-many-generations-to-count' homesteader/farmer. She loves advocating for the good things in life: self-sufficiency, inspiration, and purpose. Her Yellow Brick Road Farm is on an acre of land on Cape Sable Island (not the one with the horses….well they do have horses but it's not THAT Sable Island). Cape Sable Island is located on the very Southwest tip of Nova Scotia, Canada and it is very MUCH a fishing village. Jennifer and her husband Trevor, the reluctant farmer, raised their four children there: Courtney, married to Big Luke and living on their own with grandsons Owen and Oliver ; Logan, 19 living on his own as he finishes up becoming an Electrician; Charlize 16; and Little Luke 12. https://yellowbrickroadfarm.ca Facebook @yellowbrickroadfarm A special thanks to this episode's sponsor, Mr. Heater - North America's most popular brand of portable heaters and accessories. Jeff and Jason talk about how to keep warm when the mercury dips below -40 Fahrenheit.  Fishing Report The polar vortex has kept me off the ice for the past two weekends, but hopefully this podcast is coming straight from the ice this week.     Cole from Iowa sent us some awesome pictures of fishing on Okoboji and Big Spirit in North West Iowa.      Gear - How to Dress for extreme cold We talked about how we dress for the extreme cold.  As always we use layers, below is an example of how I layer for a cold day.   Layer 1. Base Layer-IE long johns 2. then shirt 3. then fleece 4. Jacket   Other items that I find essential when fishing in extreme cold. Hand warmers These are great when you have been fishing all day and have to pull tip ups.  I will usually open them up to get them activated then pull my tip ups.  When I get on the sled to ride back to the cabin I will put them in my gloves to warm up my cold fingers.  Feet warmers I use toe warmers in my boots on cold days or no matter how good my boots are my toes get cold. Fleece pants I bought these fleece pants, well bibs, from Ebay. They were less than 20 bucks and they make a great layer under my bibs. Socks Warm socks, but not so thick that they scrunch in my boots.  Not enough air space will make my feed cold. Boots Water proof boots with as high of Thinsulate grams you can buy.  I have some Cabela's boots that are so big I can not really drive my car with them on.  But on extreme cold days you be happy to have these Frankenstein boots. Mask A mask to cover every inch of skin on super cold days. Goggles Need some goggles to cover your eyes. Big mittens I always go for big mittens over gloves.

These are our holiday gifts to some of the biggest names in Hollywood and truffles are always well-received…especially by celebrity diet cookbook authors. The black currant extract add that little extra something that make these truffles irresistible. Ingredients: 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream2 cups semisweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 teaspoon black currant extract (optional)Directions: Line a baking sheet with waxed paper and set aside. Place cocoa powder in a small shallow bowl and set aside. Place the chocolate chips in the bowl of a food processor or blender. Pulse until finely chopped. Heat cream in a saucepan until it just starts to boil. Pour into processor over chopped chocolate. Blend until chocolate has completely melted and mixture is smooth. Add butter and pulse until combined. Pour chocolate mixture into a shallow bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours. Form into rough teaspoon-sized balls, roll in cocoa powder and place on baking sheet. Chill until firm. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks.   Tip: Recipe can be doubled, tripled or quadrupled. Tip: Place truffles in small candy boxes lined with wax paper.     Limoncello Makes 2 (750 ml) bottles   For best results, buy good quality unflavored vodka. This recipe takes awhile to develop its flavors so start it at least 3 weeks or more before you want to serve it!   Ingredients: 12 lemons, scrubbed 2 (750 ml) bottles 100-proof vodka 4 cups superfine sugar 4 cups filtered water   Directions: Using a microplane grater, grate the zest from all the lemons, being careful not to include any of the bitter white pith. Place in a gallon sized glass jar. Add vodka, cover tightly and let stand at room temperature for at least 2 weeks or up to 4 weeks. Place sugar and water in a large saucepan, stirring to combine. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and let simmer for 7 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Add to vodka mixture and let stand for an additional 1-4 weeks. Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer into decorative bottles. Serve cold.   Tip: This recipe can be doubled. Tip: Pour finished limoncello into small decorative bottles to give as gifts.     Lemon Lavender Shortbread Makes 32 cookies.   We make these cookies when we teach at Rancho La Puerta and they are always a big hit.   Ingredients: 2 cups all purpose flour, plus more for dusting 2 cups all purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 tablespoons fresh lavender, finely chopped 1 tablespoon lemon zest 3 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 1/4 cup powdered sugar 1 cup granulated sugar   Directions: Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Place flours, salt, baking powder, lavender, and lemon zest in a large bowl and whisk to combine. Place butter, powdered sugar, and 1/3 cup of the granulated sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer and mix until combined at low speed. Add flour and continue mixing until dough resembles coarse cornmeal. Gather dough into a ball and place on a lightly floured work surface. Knead briefly, just until dough comes together. Divide dough into 4 pieces and roll out to 1/2-inch thick. Place on prepared baking sheets. Score shallow cut marks (8 wedges) into top of shortbread. Sprinkle with remaining granulated sugar. Bake until lightly golden, about 22 minutes. Remove from heat and cut through, following score lines, while still warm.   Tip: Recipe can be doubled, tripled or quadrupled. Tip: Line clear Chinese take-out containers (available at restaurant supply stores) with wax or parchment paper and fill with cookies.

A Farmish Kind of Life
How to Keep Warm Without Turning up The Heat

A Farmish Kind of Life

As a Minnesota farm(ish) girl, I'm well versed in the art of how to keep warm. When fall rolls around, it's time to button up and start the unavoidable descent into colder weather. I mean, we all know winter is coming... Cold temperatures can lead to extra expense if you're bumping the thermostat up every time the outside mercury drops, so here are a few of the things we do to keep warm here at Clucky Dickens Farm before we even touch our thermostat. (Don't want to read all the words? This blog post is also a podcast—just press the triangle play button on the little black bar at the top of this post!) Keep warm and layer up! Dressing in layers isn't just for outside activities. This works for inside the house, too. Layers work because they help to trap air and insulate you better. I don't have any shame in admitting that sometimes I've got a pair of yoga pants on under my jeans. And maybe like, a tank top, a long sleeve shirt, a t-shirt, and a sweatshirt on top. Maybe I should try some fleece-lined yoga pants? And y'all know they make fleece-lined jeans, right? Warm and toasty is the name of my game. Pile it on! Tuck those layers in. What I will not admit to you, however, is how old I was before I actually learned that tucking in my bottom layer would help to keep me warmer. Oh, sure. It makes total sense now...total sense. Cover your dang feet and your head! If you're walking around the house barefoot and complaining you're cold...just stop. Stop right now. Cover your feet with wool socks like maybe these or these or these and a nice pair of slippers (these keep my feet warm). Heat escapes fastest through your extremities, so make sure those puppies are snug! Wear a stocking cap if you're cold—even when you're sleeping. Remember "Ma in her kerchief and I in my cap"? Y'all, that wasn't for fashion. Keep yo' heads warm. Keep yo' feet warm. Carry on. Drink something warm. Coffee. Tea. Hot Cocoa. Cider. Russian Tea. Even a mug of hot water will do the trick. Liquid warms your insides and the mug warms your hands. Score! (This is the same reason that soup and stew is such a favorite menu item in the fall and winter!) Go outside and come back in. When the temps recently started to drop, my husband and I were out for a couple hours working around the farm. When we came back in, my husband commented how bloody hot it was in the house. Now, we both knew that's only because we'd both been working outside, but isn't it amazing that our feeling about the temperature is relative? A house set at 64 seems cold, until you go outside and work where it's 30. Then 64 seems really cozy. Get moving and keep warm! This is grade school stuff and we all know this—when your blood is pumpin' you're warmer. The problem is that in the winter, we want to go into hibernation mode and we move less. Make use of the ten minute tidy and move around your house quickly picking things up. Or do a hardcore scrubbing of the bathroom using mostly elbow grease to finish the job. It's amazing how much warmer we can feel when we're workin' hard! Eat. Listen. I know you want to be gorgeous and fit into your size-whatever-jeans, but trust me when I tell you this: the time that the temps start to drop is not the time to start restricting calories. Your body is able to deal with colder temps much easier if it is properly fueled. That means eating enough food and drinking enough water. Take care of your body so it can take care of you! Bake. The same reason you don't want to make bread, pies, cookies, or roast vegetables in the summer is the same reason you should do it when the temps outside turn chilly. I don't consider the constant running of the oven to be wasteful because what's coming out of it is stuff we're going to use anyway (even if I bake it and it goes into the freezer for later). Some of my favorite things to bake when the temps turn cold: Homemade Hamburger Buns Honey Wheat Bread
