The guys were joined by special guest Freddie Johnson at an event hosted by the Bourbon Podcast to raise money for bulletproof vests for police K-9's. Here's some background on Freddie Johnson and what he means in the world of bourbon: Freddie Johnson is a third generation employee at Buffalo Trace Distillery and serves as its Distillery VIP Visitor Lead. Born in Paris, KY (Bourbon County), he spent some of his early childhood summers in the mountains of Breathitt County with his maternal grandfather who was a coal miner and friend to the moonshiners. The family moved to Frankfort, KY when he was five. Freddie enjoyed hunting, fishing and hanging out with his paternal grandfather, Jimmy Johnson Sr., and father, Jimmy Johnson Jr., at what is now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery. Freddie was in the middle of a successful career as a network/operations engineer in Atlanta, GA when he put all of it aside to fulfill a promise made to his father, Jimmy, more than 20 years earlier. He had promised his father that he would work at the Distillery during his lifetime so they could say they had three generations of the Johnson family that worked at Buffalo Trace. Freddie took early retirement and moved back to care for his father and brother. Jimmy got him a job as a tour guide at the Distillery in 2002 but Freddie has been in and around the Distillery since he was five years old. Freddie weaves together his childhood memories with the Distillery's rich history as his entertains thousands each year in various tours around Buffalo Trace. One of the Distillery's most popular and highly sought after tour guides, Freddie is the recipient of the 2015 ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence) Award, the 2017 Lexington (Ky) Hospitality Award and was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2018.

Rabbit Hole's Founder and Whiskey Maker, Kaveh Zamanian, left a 20+ year career as a clinical psychologist to pursue his long-standing passion for fine spirits. With a mission to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, he set course to develop one-of-a-kind expressions of American whiskey. Designed as a true craft distillery designed to scale, it produces 27,000 barrels every year. Since opening in 2018, it has been heralded as the "Architectural Icon" of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and was recently named "World's Leading Bourbon Distillery Tour" by the World Travel Awards. In 2022, Kaveh was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame's 20th anniversary class, cementing his place among industry pioneers and visionaries. Ripy, son of the original distiller. 1976 Wild Turkey introduces the world's first bourbon liqueur, introducing a broader audience and attracting even more drinkers to the bourbon world. The liqueur would eventually lead to the creation of American Honey. 1981 Eddie Russell, son of Jimmy Russell, joins Wild Turkey as a relief operator and begins to work his way up the distillery ladder. 1991 Wild Turkey introduces our premium Rare Breed bourbon, one of the first barrel proof bourbons to hit the market. 1995 Wild Turkey follows it up with the launch of Kentucky Spirit, a single-barrel 101-proof bourbon, one of the only single barrel American whiskey offerings of the time. THE NEW VISION 2000 Master Distiller Jimmy Russell is inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. 2004 Jimmy Russell celebrates his 50th year at the Wild Turkey distillery. 2010 Eddie Russell is inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame by his father, Jimmy Russell. 2015 Eddie Russell is officially given the title of Master Distiller, then making Jimmy and Eddie the only active father and son duo of bourbon Master Distillers in the world. 2016 Famed actor and bourbon enthusiast Matthew McConaughey joins Wild Turkey as Creative Director. 2018 Wild Turkey introduces Longbranch, a small-batch bourbon refined with Texas Mesquite and American Oak charcoals, and the first co-creation from Master Distiller Eddie Russell and Creative Director Matthew McConaughey. 2020 Wild Turkey introduces Rare Breed Rye, our premium quality, masterfully crafted barrel proof rye.

More than 40 years ago, Eddie Russell started working at Wild Turkey's distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. Ultimately, he became master distiller and created some of the brand's most well-known whiskies. In 2010, he was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. It's not unexpected—or even surprising—that he would have such a long and prolific career. Incredibly, Eddie's father, bourbon legend Jimmy Russell, has been working at the Wild Turkey distillery even longer, starting there on September 10, 1954. On this episode of Fix Me a Drink, Eddie joins hosts David Wondrich and Noah Rothbaum to talk about what it was like growing up in the bourbon business and how the explosion in popularity of American whiskey has made distillers inadvertent rock stars. The trio also shares stories about Jimmy Russell and reveals some all-time favorite bourbons and ryes. So pour yourself a glass of bourbon or rye and listen to this new episode of Fix Me a Drink. The guys are joined by special guest Freddie Johnson at an event hosted by the Bourbon Podcast to raise money for bulletproof vests for police K-9's.

Our favorite spirit is Kentucky Bourbon. To be more precise: We enjoy Woodford Reserve the MOST. Our kids sip it, our parents love it, and we tend to serve it to our guests and friends more than any other adult beverage. We have history and take our bourbon drinking very seriously. Back in 2019, before the world shut down, my husband Craig and I, and two of our best friends, went to Kentucky to discover a new destination, follow The Kentucky Bourbon Trail and to learn more about how bourbon is created. Is a trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail on your list too? Ever since our grown kids came home from college loving this delicious Kentucky spirit, I have been paying attention. Our kids' enthusiasm for all drinks made with bourbon was intoxicating and persuasive. Fast forward several years later, my favorite way to indulge is now a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned because I love the aroma and smooth flavor of high-quality bourbon. My husband and I toured The Kentucky Bourbon Trail with our friends Brad and Troy; we visited smaller distilleries, dined at excellent restaurants, and thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Woodford Reserve, where our bourbon of choice is carefully crafted. The art of making fine bourbon first took place on the site of the Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark, in 1812. The perfectly balanced taste of their Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey comprises more than 200 detectable flavor notes, from bold grain and wood to sweet aromatics, spice, and fruit & floral notes. Mmm, delicious Kentucky Bourbon! During our visit in 2019, we sipped, listened, and toured Woodford Reserve and had the time of our lives. Never in a million years did I dream I would create a podcast and have the opportunity to interview Master Distiller Chris Morris and Assistant Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall. Dreams do come true, my friends; I am living proof. (pun intended) Chris Morris is Master Distiller for Brown-Forman Corporation, the seventh since the company began in 1870. A Louisville native, he has spent his working life in the bourbon industry. Chris is responsible for maintaining the award-winning taste of the whiskies produced at the Woodford Reserve and Old Forester Distilleries. He is also one of three generations of his family to work at Brown-Forman and is a member of the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. Elizabeth McCall, CSS (Certified Specialist of Spirits), is the second generation of her family to work in the bourbon industry and one of the youngest female distillers in the United States. When she first began working at Brown Forman, assuming the role she is in today was never the goal. Realizing the excellent opportunity for employment the company offered, Elizabeth followed in her mother's footsteps, starting as a sensory expert and working in the quality department. McCall has a master's degree from the University of Louisville and has been a member of Brown-Forman's R&D Department since 2009. Her ongoing devotion to quality, and interest in all things spirits, eventually led her to become Master Taster in 2015 and, in 2018, Assistant Master Distiller of Woodford Reserve. Today she works directly with Master Distiller Chris Morris and R&D on the innovation and development of new products within Woodford Reserve. In this episode: Personal insights from the experts! It's Bourbon Community Roundtable #71 where we are joined by the likes of all of our friends to talk about some hot topics in the recent bourbon news. Up first, we discuss lotteries vs lines. Now that Old Forester and Four Roses have announced they are no longer going to sell their limited birthday bourbon and small batch editions in the gift shop to local Kentuckians from people camping out, it has moved to a nationwide sweepstakes where anyone can enter. So, is this the beginning of the end for waiting in lines for bourbon? The Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame is inducting six new people. There is criteria to make it, but what criteria would we consider to be in our hall of fame? Lastly, we look at an old topic which is what is the cheapest bottle you need to own? The reaction to last week's bonus episode with Stephanie Macleod of Dewar's was so positive that we're doing it again this week! Wes Henderson of Angel's Envy joined us Friday night for the #HappyHourLive webcast, and we talked about everything from the construction underway at the distillery in Louisville to lab-created whiskies and what defines a "master distiller." That's something Wes knows well, since he co-founded Angel's Envy with his father, the late master distiller and original Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame inductee Lincoln Henderson. Wes joined his father in the Hall of Fame two years ago, and answered many of your whisky questions during the webcast, too!
Lindsay Ell is a dynamic musician with a bright future ahead of her. Shortly after owning the stage at the Hometown Rising Country Music and Whiskey Festival, she sat down with Fred and opened up about many personal details. What's it like to be on the road? What does she drink? What are the challenges of being a famous musician? And most importantly, as Lindsay's eyes gazed upon the sea of bourbon in Fred's trailer, the whiskey critic started asking a series of questions that made her mouth water and get her excited to taste a bourbon she found quite tasty. In this first episode, there's also a little whiskey trivia and more about Fred than he intended to share. TRIVIA Answer: President William Howard Taft When President William Howard Taft took office in 1909, there was mass confusion as to what whiskey was. The Pure Food & Drug Act had placed some limitations on medicinal marketing and given consumers an added layer of protection, but it really didn't define whiskey types. So many distillers were adding food coloring to distilled molasses and calling it bourbon. In what became known as the Taft Decision, the president gave whiskey its first federal definitions. In his lengthy writings, he specifically called out the quality, noting: "Some time during the Civil War it was discovered that if raw whiskey as it came from the still, unrectified and without distillation, and thus containing one-half to one-sixth of 1 percent of fusel oil, was kept in oak barrels, the inside of the staves of which were charred, the tannic acid of the charred oak which found its way from the wood into the distilled spirits would color the raw white whiskey to the conventional color of American whiskey, and after some years would eliminate altogether the raw taste and the bad odor given the liquor by the fusel oil and would leave a smooth, delicate aroma, making the whiskey exceedingly palatable without the use of any additional flavoring or coloring. The whiskey thus made by one distillation and by the aging in charred oak barrels came to be known as "straight whiskey," and to those who were good judges came to be regarded as the best and purest whiskey..." For this decision, Taft is in the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Wes Henderson grew up in bourbon, but he didn't realize just how special his world was until later in life. His father, Lincoln Henderson, was a hallmark in the whiskey world, serving at Brown-Forman for decades, developing incredible products including Woodford Reserve. Going to work with his dad was always cool, but it wasn't until adulthood that the desire struck to join his father in the creation of something special that they could call their own. We sat down with Wes to get to know him and more of the brand story on this week's episode of the #502LeaderSeries Podcast as part of Bourbon Heritage Month! The timing is perfect as Wes was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame during the Kentucky Bourbon Festival this past week. A well-deserved honor he shares with his father & no doubt hopes to one day share with his sons. For more check out YesLouisville.com!
