Second only to the state of Alaska in navigable waterways, the Bluegrass state's intimate connection with it's lakes, streams, and rivers is well documented. From legends of exploration by historic figures like Daniel Boone and Abraham Lincoln, to the seasonal tourism brought to Kentucky in more modern times, water is as important to the Commonwealth as horse racing or bourbon. As we have discussed several times on MIK, running water seems to be a major factor in many paranormal encounters and supernatural experiences, and attractor of different types of phenomena. While dogmen stalk the banks of the Land Between the Lakes and Mothman beats its wings along the surface of the Ohio river, what unknown entities and unfathomable creatures lurk in the depths of Kentucky's waters? Come along as we plunge the murky bluegrass waters in search of the monsters that may call them home. From Herry, the Herrington Lake Monster, a supposed pig-eel creature, and the Lake Linville Monster, described by some witnesses as a large black slug released into the lake by machine-gun toting G-men, to a Nessie-like serpent said to make the Ohio river near Henderson, Kentucky it's home, and unnaturally gigantic specimens of Catfish and Alligator Gar, we've drug the waters in search of them all! Tonight, Midnight in Kentucky is your personal guide on this full moon lit tour through the unusually unnatural inhabitants of the Bluegrass Cryptid Aquarium!Audio support for this episode was provided by TruckStop Dave from the upcoming Angry Small Town album. Melanie Blandford and Sherry Maddock met for the first time in the Lexington Community Radio studio when we broadcast this episode. Their meeting held magic. Listen as these two wonderful leaders toward new food systems talk about their connections to plants: they may be sister “plant empaths,” humans gifted with particular sensitivities to plants’ lives. In more traditional terms, Melanie Blandford is the Executive Director of Marketing for the Kentucky Deparment of Agriculture, and leads the acclaimed Kentucky Proud branding and marketing program. Sherry Maddock recently moved to Melbourne, Australia, where she is at work establishing an entity that connects people facing difficulties with opportunities and hope as they nurture plants in an urban setting. While in Lexington, Sherry played a leadership role in a network of urban gardening and job development initiatives, including 4th Street Farm, the London Ferrell Community Garden, Seedleaf and FoodChain.

This week’s featured farmer on Greenhorns Radio is Mike Lewis. Since 2009, Michael Lewis has been a busy man. From becoming a husband and father to contributing as a Kentucky Proud farmer who is a Veteran of the 3rd U.S. Infantry, The Old Guard, he has proven how invaluable honorable service can be. He began full-time farming in 2010 and, after supporting local farmer’s market and community supported agriculture efforts throughout 2011, founded America’s first Veteran Oriented food security organization, The Growing Warriors Project, in 2012. Growing Warriors, which has helped over 65 veteran families grow more than 18,000 pounds of organic food, exists to equip, assist, and train our nation’s military veterans in agriculture production for themselves, their families, and the nation. In 2013, Michael was a celebrated recipient of Kentucky’s Local Food Hero Award, an honor granted by Seed Capital Kentucky and the Kentucky Department of Agriculture to exceptional individuals who promote local, farm-fresh food grown in Kentucky. Chosen from supporters who cast almost 2,600 votes, Michael stands out among 1,450 of his fellow Kentucky farmers for agricultural contributions he’s worked tirelessly for over the past several years, giving so many access to Kentucky-grown food straight from the farm. He has also served as a member of the Kentucky Industrial Hemp commission and, with the help of fellow veterans, operates America’s first federally permitted Industrial Hemp farm since 1934. At the close of 2014, Yahoo lauded Michael as one of eight people who “Made our World a Better Place,” touting his efforts with Growing Warriors and its movement to promote projects across multiple states. Compassionate and unfaltering, Michael’s impact is undeniable—even a brief conversation will show that his vision is contagious and will, as we work together, bring about the growth and change that Kentucky, the U.S., and our good green Earth so markedly needs.
