In this episode of The Healers Café, Manon Bolliger, FCAH, RBHT (facilitator and retired naturopath with 30+ years of practice) speaks to Maria Maldonado Smith about the power of aligning your core values with your vision, using intentional goal-setting and vision boards to manifest a purpose-driven life. For the transcript and full story go to: https://www.drmanonbolliger.com/maria-maldonado-smith       Highlights from today's episode include: Manon Bolliger  06:10 it's like we may have aspirations and dreams and they gave us a direction, but at any moment in time where we're still agents of our own destiny, we can still say, wait a minute, now that I really know what it feels like, it's not quite right for me, right and shift it. Maria Maldonado Smith  08:19 The three questions are, what do I want? Yeah, it's interesting, because a lot of people don't, can't even answer that question for sure. You ask them, What do you want? I don't know. I don't know. The second one is, who do you want to become? Maria Maldonado Smith  I also think that there's something beautiful in abandoning goals that no longer work for us. And I don't think that we talk about that enough, because so much of our focus has always been put on, but did you accomplish the goal? But maybe the goal was never meant to be accomplished.   ABOUT MARIA MALDONADO SMITH: Maria Maldonado Smith is the Chief Empowerment Officer of MMS Consulting and creator of the Executive Vision Imagery program. Mallory is a former Miss Kentucky, author, and YouTuber and Shawn is an Olympic gold medalist and author.  They talk about surviving the Amazing Race, motherhood, and having friend ESP. And Clea and Joanna take questions from the audience on social media strategy, weird items found in client's homes, and why Joanna really doesn't like “birthing” a book. She talks about the advantages she had in life because of her father's intention to instill money management skills in her and her siblings. Mallory's life changed forever the second she decided to compete on stage in the state pageant. So how did a self-proclaimed tom-boy growing up ended up competing for and WINNING Miss Kentucky? You might be surprised that the role is decent paying and as Miss Kentucky, Mallory was employed by the Department of Agriculture. She shares all the financial benefits associated with the role, as well as the expenses. She went on to compete for Miss America and was a runner-up. Mallory talks about what the organization looks for and how she differentiated herself from her competition. Guess who one of her judges was. (hint: we've had her on the show!) As soon as she walked off the Miss America stage, she was cast for reality TV. In the episode, Mallory opens up about her prescription drug problem that was driven by her ambition after coming off of Miss America and how she overcame it. Despite losing the All Star season of Amazing Race by just 90 seconds in the last episode, Mallory and her father have crazy stories of their travels and won various prizes along the way. Leaving reality TV, Mallory taught herself how to leverage the world of social media to have a successful career. Most merchandise businesses don't execute well and struggle to enjoy competitive margins. Mallory was able to grow a multi-million business for which she sells a million dollars worth of merchandise in a matter of minutes. How exactly does she do that? How can you do that? Mallory Ervin is a natural-born achiever. Not just as the oldest child in her big Kentucky family, but by the time Mallory reached her mid-20s, her accolades spanned from success as a childhood singer, being crowned Miss Kentucky and runner-up Miss America, as well as competing as a 3-time contestant on the show, The Amazing Race. Talk about a resumé! She opens her new book, Living Fully: Dare to Step Into Your Most Vibrant Life, by sharing the life-changing season of addiction and recovery she faced eight years ago when her obsession with achievement and approval spiraled into addiction to prescription pills. Even when doctors warned her she was going to die if she continued the pace and lifestyle she'd been living, she remembers thinking, “I'd rather go out like this than anyone know what's going on behind the scenes; I nearly lost my life to make sure I looked a certain way on the outside.” And though her courageous journey to re-discover a fulfilling and healthy life began with at rock bottom of her addiction, Mallory's story is about far more than substance recovery. In the book, she records her years of work to resist a life of excess and to pursue balance, simplicity, and ordinary joys – just a few of the ingredients she's discovered that finally led her to a life that's truly full. “I wrote the rest of this book to the person I am now [not just those with substance addictions]; the person who longs to live a bigger, fuller life.” This conversation and her book are full (pun intended) of daily practices and lifelong truths that can help you shift your perspective toward one that leads to authentic, rich living. Here are just a few we touch on: “How to avoid life in default mode and quit living on cruise control.” “Absence of bad is not a qualifier for a good life.” “Living fully isn't the same thing as your days being full.” “Take chances. Pain avoidance is a powerful motivator for mediocrity.” “The simple life brings ordinary joy. It is always the in between moments, the real-life moments, that bring me the most happiness.” “We must continue to re-choose our faith, again and again.” Mallory shares more about how she discovered and how we can pursue these effective mindsets, practices, and much more. But the common denominator for all is that we have a choice. “It is our choice every day to live a full life.” Let's start now! And she developed an addiction to pills to help numb her feelings. Now, she's written a best-selling book called Living Fully in which she writes about how she finally learned to live a bigger, better life that didn't depend on achievements to be happy. Some of the things Mallory talks about on the show today are what made her seek help, what she learned in therapy, and how she's now living a full life (rather than a busy one).

Sometimes you look up from your busy life and realize . . . this is not the story you thought would be yours. And without even realizing it, your spirit slid from “Everything is awesome!” to “I'm just getting by.” That's what former Miss Kentucky and three-time Amazing Race contestant Mallory Ervin realized one day—and she decided she was going to do something about it. Mallory and Emily talk about Mallory's brand-new book called “Living Fully,” where Mallory candidly shares about the addiction that gradually took over her life until she decided she wasn't going to live that story anymore. Mallory reminds us that living a full life doesn't mean the absence of “bad” things, or letting other people decide what makes you happy. It means despite whatever is happening, you're choosing to pursue more of what matters to you. It means spending more time with the people and work and ideas that makes you come alive. From the outside looking in, Mallory Ervin’s life looked picture-perfect. Raised on a picturesque farm with a huge, loving family, she was crowned Miss Kentucky, then a runner up for Miss America, and went on to star on the hit series, “The Amazing Race” three times. It looked like she had it all—a life filled with travel, adventure and fun. But appearances can be deceiving. Desperate to outdo herself and constantly wanting to achieve more in life, Mallory began relying on prescription drugs to help her keep on pushing forward. It wasn’t until she hit rock bottom that she started to truly understand and embrace that a full life is not defined by achievements.   In this episode of Always Evolving with Coach Mike Bayer, Mallory shares her journey of addiction and recovery. No longer defined by titles or fame, she was free to become her best self and now she’s passionate about helping others do the same. If you feel lost, are constantly seeking the approval of others or are always striving to live a life full of the “hero” photos you see on social media – listen to today’s podcast. Strange Fruit #70: Former Miss Kentucky Djuan Trent on Coming Out; Violence in Downtown Louisville

Strange Fruit

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2014 35:37

Out of town Fruitcakes may not have heard, but a large group of teenagers committed multiple assaults and robberies on March 22nd in downtown Louisville. Racist commentary followed; the teenagers were black and, though their victims included both white and black folks, many in the community framed the incident as black on white crime. The WFPL newsroom has been following the story, and our News Director Gabe Bullard joined us for part of our Juicy Fruit segment this week to talk about the incident and how the community and media responded. "We are attracted to a person, to a soul, and not necessarily whatever their reproductive organs are." That's how our guest this week, Djuan Trent, explains her choice to identify as queer. The former Miss Kentucky made headlines this month when she came out on her blog; interviews and profile pieces followed. Originally from Georgia, she went to Berea College and now calls Kentucky home. After being crowned Miss Kentucky in 2010, she went on to place among the top ten semifinalists in the Miss America Pageant. She's now a blogger and motivation speaker (we're guessing her bookings will increase now!) We spoke with Djuan this week about her career in pageants, why she felt it was important to be an out and proud black woman, and how sexual orientation can evolve over time. "I understand and I believe very much in the fluidity of sexuality," she explained. "I've seen girls who were full-flown lesbians, running around campus with the rainbow flag all day, every day when I was in college, and two years later they're on facebook like, 'He proposed and I said yes!'" We talked about a recent incident involving friend-to-the-show Dr. Mireille Miller-Young, who removed a sign from an anti-choice display/demonstration on the UCSB campus where she teaches. Protesters then followed her across campus, harassed her, and filmed her without her consent. (Dr. Miller-Young joined us on an earlier episode of Strange Fruit to share her research on considering porn through a black, queer, feminist lens. Also on Juicy Fruit, a thumbs up to Logo & Avenue Q's new HIV awareness campaign and a recap of RuPaul's Drag Race so blunt it prompted Jaison to say, "I probably am for the first time ever on this show speechless, that you just really read that child like that."
