The rivalry between the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky (UK) is one of the most intense and passionate in college sports. Known as the "Battle for the Bluegrass," the two schools have a long history of competition dating back to 1913. The rivalry extends beyond just basketball, with the schools competing in a variety of sports including football, baseball, and soccer. However, it is the basketball rivalry that is most well-known and has the greatest impact on the state of Kentucky. The intensity of the rivalry is heightened by the fact that the two schools are located just over 70 miles apart and share a similar fan base. Many families in Kentucky are divided between the two schools, leading to intense competition and trash-talking between fans. The rivalry also extends beyond the playing field, with the two schools often competing for top recruits and resources. This has led to a strong sense of pride and loyalty among fans of both schools, making the "Battle for the Bluegrass" one of the most exciting and passionate rivalries in college sports. #louisville #kentucky #ncaabasketball #rivalry #collegesports #collegebasketball #louisvillevskentucky #collegefootball
Joined today by Country Music artist and rabid Kentucky basketball fan, JD Shelburne. JD talks about his favorite Christmas songs, the best and worst things about growing up on a tobacco farm in Kentucky, and attending University of Kentucky (UK). We chat about the current state of Kentucky basketball, where we were when we found out we signed Coach Cal, and if we expect too much from the players as fans. JD shares about teaching himself to play a guitar after his grandmother passed away, promoting himself and faking it until he made it. We discuss his loyal fan base, playing over 250 shows a year and what's the one thing he needs in his dressing room. JD tells a tremendous story about meeting his childhood idol Ken Griffey Jr., getting the call that he was going to open for ZZ Top and being on the cover of the Kentucky tourism magazine. He is studying exoplanet demographics and the escaping atmosphere of hot Jupiter's, and is developing software as part of the data reduction pipeline team for the Keck Planet Finder (KPF). However, his non-traditional path to where he is now started in the unlikeliest of places: Kroger Field, the football stadium of University of Kentucky (UK). Although growing up Dakotah was always curious about the sky, he was never encouraged to pursue academics. “School was just a means to be able to play football,” Dakotah mentioned, explaining that the sport was what people knew him for. Dakotah ended up as a strong safety for UK's team with a full scholarship while pursuing a degree in Community and Leadership Development. During his time at UK, he injured his knee which forced him to end his football career early. Up until that point, everything in Dakotah's life revolved around football. Losing his core identity, Dakotah recalls that he was in a dark and depressing place, not knowing what the future would hold. Why should we care about heritage science? It reveals who we were & who we are. Thanks to a new $14 million National Science Foundation (NSF) mid-scale infrastructure grant, the University of Kentucky (UK) has the tools & team to answer new heritage science questions right here in Kentucky. In part 1, we meet the UK College of Engineering faculty (Brent Seales, Suzanne Smith, Corey Baker and John Balk), who share the impact of NSF funding, what this new equipment will allow researchers to explore and how they will partner with the community to answer new questions.

Traditional rivalries are put aside on this special holiday week edition of Sustainability Now! as your host, Justin Mog, fills the studio with new friends from the University of Kentucky (UK) who have put together an exciting Studio Louisville pop-up exhibit about the future of the Preston Corridor here in Louisville! Our guests this week are: Carolina Segura Bell, Senior Lecturer in UK's Department of Landscape Architecture; Jeff Fugate, faculty in UK's School of Architecture and an urban planner by trade; and three senior Landscape Architecture students, Kimberly Chalk, Skyler Collins & Chloe Mattingly. They stopped into the studio while they were all in town on December 15th for the grand opening of the exhibit in a temporary space run by UofL's Urban Design Studio on the second floor of the Republic Building on Muhammad Ali Blvd. at 5th Street. Learn more at https://www.udstudio.org/stories/studio-louisville-exhibition Over the next several months through the pop-up space, the Urban Design Studio is looking to do some more exhibits, demonstration projects and urban prototyping that look at how the design of our city can improve human and environmental health. Exhibition: Studio Louisville | Preston Corridor Location: Healthful City Design Studio | Republic Building, Second Floor | 429 W Muhammad Ali Blvd, Louisville, KY 40202 Participants: University of Kentucky School of Architecture, School of Interiors, Department of Landscape Architecture, & Department of Geography Studio Louisville is a collaborative design studio at the University of Kentucky that treats design as a lever for promoting a healthier and more just future for Louisville and Jefferson County. In Fall 2021, a multidisciplinary group of graduate and undergraduate students from architecture, interiors, landscape architecture, geography, and urban design worked with a team of professional planners and consultants to analyze the diverse spatial qualities of the Preston Corridor and propose a series of multiscalar design interventions that align with the priorities of stakeholder groups represented in various planning documents. Focusing on issues of social equity, healthy environments, and climate justice, the exhibition assembles the student research and design work and invites visitors to engage in conversation about the possibilities for Preston Corridor. Metro Louisville is working to re-envision the Preston Corridor and is currently seeking public input at http://prestoncorridorplan.org. Extending 11 miles between downtown Louisville and the Jefferson County line, the Preston corridor connects many neighborhoods and people to jobs, shopping, entertainment, and key service and education centers including Louisville's hospital district and the University of Louisville. But this key corridor is made of disjointed parts and traveling along it can be challenging. Through this project, Metro is working with the Preston community to re-envision the corridor and develop a plan to guide future growth and redevelopment. We are also looking at how best to improve travel for all transportation modes, no matter if you're in a car, on a bus, on a bike or on foot. As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! runtime: 62 minutes / tennis, pros, lifeWassup! Hope all is well and the week going brilliantly! This was a fun recording, Jon and I hadn't seen each other for a while, and we sat and talked for a while before we actually did the podcast. We met at the Bluegrass Racket Club, it was busy with court time, it's always good to see players running hard at their private lessons.Jon had travelled with two players at different times, with Eric Quigley and Jesse Witten. Both were among the best ever to play at the Univ of Kentucky (UK). It's always insightful to learn how they went about working on their games, I was more interested in their mental games, how each coped with the pressures of highs and lows. Jon already knew these guys while coaching at UK, so moving to the next level wasn't too hard. Anyway, enjoy. Shoot me an email at nbpod @hotmail.com for any comments or ideas about enhancing your listening experience.Have a great weekend!

What are some essential strategies that district leaders should put into place to make sure all students have the ability to engage in deeper learning? How can school leaders and teachers collaborate more effectively to maximize impact on diverse groups of students? What are some ways to strike the appropriate balance between structure and agency when implementing project-based learning practices? We discuss these questions and much more with Dr. Carmen Coleman, Chief Academic Officer of Jefferson County Public Schools in Kentucky. In 2018, Dr. Coleman launched the “What’s in Your Backpack?” video series, with each episode focusing on a specific aspect of the Backpack of Student Success Skills development. The program focuses on providing students with a backpack full of universal essential skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication. Students fill their virtual backpacks with examples of their work and defend that work during the school year. Dr. Coleman previously served as an associate clinical professor at the University of Kentucky (UK) in the Department of Educational Leadership Studies. She was the program coordinator for the Principal Preparation Program and the director of the Next Generation Leadership Academy. Before joining UK, Dr. Coleman served as superintendent of Danville Independent Schools. Previously, she was director of elementary schools in Fayette County. She began her career in Scott County, where she worked as a teacher and principal. This episode is a follow up to S1/E10, when we spoke with Jefferson County's Donna Neary about "Accelerate to Graduate", her team's project-based learning initiative that helped newcomers graduate before aging out of high school. We were curious to learn more about the role school leadership plays in implementing this kind of program. As you will hear, Dr. Coleman provided us with that and much more! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/highest-aspirations/message
