In this episode of The Next Gospel, the hosts explore the themes of first contact, cultural assumptions, and the ethical dilemmas presented in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'The Last Outpost.' They discuss the portrayal of the Ferengi, the implications of capitalism, and the importance of understanding cultural differences in communication. The conversation highlights the need for humility and the dangers of miscommunication in cross-cultural interactions, drawing parallels to historical colonialism and its impact on relationships between different cultures. This conversation delves into the enduring nature of capitalism, the cultural context of texts, and the exploration of the T'Kon Empire. It also addresses the nature of death and dying, the experience of living after near-death situations, and the ethics surrounding capitalism and death rituals. The participants reflect on how these themes interconnect and influence our understanding of life and existence
Pull out two strips of Gold-Pressed Latinum and submit them in the little box to listen to our episode on the Farenghi, Star Trek The Next Generation's first attempt at a recurring villain race which went incredibly poorly for everyone concerned. From their first appearance in the show when they act like incredibly hyperactive gerbils in the The Last Outpost to their most recent focus in Star Trek Prodigy where we find out more about Dal's past and the conflict between his old life and his new life in First Con-tact to one of Deep Space Nine's many attempts to bring nuance to the species in Family Business when Quark and Rom have to deal with their mother Ishka's becoming involved in what passes for First Stage Feminism in a culture where women can't wear clothes. What a perfect alien race to talk about the day before the British Election gets the money grabbing Tory's out of power after 14 years! Who says Star Trek isn't political? If they do, make them put three strips of latinum in the appropriate hole! EPISODES INCLUDED: The Last Outpost (13:39), First Con-tact (43:35), Family Business (01:03:43) Talking Points Include: They Live and Ironic 4th July movies (we didn't watch ‘They Live,' but instead we watched ‘Slap Shot'), we briefly touch on the inevitable rousting of the Torys, the unfortunate antisemitic coding of the Farenghi, BE INTIMIDATED BY MILES' ARMS! The Robocop vs. The Terminator crossover by Dark Horse Comics, (CORRECTION: Frank Miller HAD started writing and drawing ‘Sin City' the year before) the Monster of the Week RPG, back to the Season One well of Star Trek: The Next Generation, The Bee-Gees, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam, where IS the Enterprise's Engineer? Geordi's weird ‘oooooh-wee!' could the Farenghi ever have been a threat? Doctor Who's own Farneghi the Slitheen and how they killed Charlie's interest in Doctor Who back in 2005, the Farenghi design and how it's immediately undercut, Armin Shimmerman giving some great vibes this early on, how this remakes ‘Errand of Mercy,' Captain Picard does a swear, that one episode of ‘The X-Files' what Stephen King wrote contained a swear, Transformers: The Movie dropping a ‘S-Bomb,' Are we actually watching ‘The Mighty Boosh? We want Matt Berry to be a Star Trek Alien, Adele (sound goblins ate anything we had to say further on Adele, apologies for the weird edit) WHY IS ‘ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS' the US Number One in January? Kid Kapici, Sea Power is a Hometown Band, Dal has a Yondu. Charlie is a freak, Charlie also likes to equate Dal from ‘Prodigy' to Poochie, Prodigy excelling at non-humanoid aliens, cartoons for kids these days don't have as much as a reset button as they used to, Prodigy finally does a Starfleet, Warren Ellis and Brian Michael Bendis style decompression in relation to Picard, eventually Charlie will learn how to pronounce René Auberjonois' surname, Living Joy, Montell Jordan and THIS IS HOW WE DO IT, Charlie's love of KINECT Dance Games, Jake Sisko is disturbingly obsessed with his dad's love life, Quark is the lone conservative in a strangely progressive Farenghi family, THE RETURN OF JEFFREY COMBS, Farenghinar is the future tech-bros want, (CULTURAL NOTE: Rounders is the British equivalent of ‘Baseball,') how old is Jake Sisko? At this point during the episode, the weekly Madison Tornado siren test starts going off, Charlie deals with his own FCA in real life, Farenghi culture and their home world is almost set up to be a Gilliam-esque nightmare, once more a reminder that Miles didn't watch ‘Rejoined' for the Trill episode, this isn't a Farenghi Comedy Episode.

TNG First Season Stories for Trek GamesThe game, "Star Trek: Resurgence", came to various platforms in 2023. It introduced several new characters (as well as some old favorites) in its post-Nemesis 24th Century storyline. At the heart of the game's story was a sequel to the first season Next Gen episode "The Last Outpost." Since the trio are revisiting the beginnings of TNG, they look at what other episodes could be mined for stories for new Trek games.Join this round-robin pitch of ideas that takes one first season episode, one of its storylines, and applies it to a new Trek game based on an existing (or entirely new) Trek series. How does "Home Soil" continue in game form? How can "Lower Decks" go further into the ideas of "Haven"? Grab your console of choice and let us know your favorite Trek game pitch.

Juni 1994.

Star Trek: The Next Generation analysis of season 1 episode 4 (The Last Outpost) After some subtle but intriguing build-up over the last three episodes, we finally meet the Ferengi and they are...not great. Falling into the "Space Jew" trope, the Ferengi encapsulate a lot of issues discussed in the last episode: Orientalism, colonialism/anti-Indigeneity, white feminism, racism. Beyond being antisemetic, this episode is also insufferable philosophy bro navel-gazing, seemingly written by That Guy TM who thinks he's the first person to read The Art of War. It's not all bad though: this episode was an absolute convoluted mess that gave us incredible moments like Geordi's "woowee!" and Data's "nothing to write home about." We get a lot of mileage out of the "power converter" that the Ferengi purportedly stole, unable to say it without channeling Luke Skywalker's legendary whininess and devolving into giggles. We talk about how human Data is in this episode as writers still (and basically will always) continue to struggle to write him as an actual android; how actor LeVar Burton kicks the energy level up to ten while Jonathan Frakes gives him back a one; how Deanna Troi is the only reasonable, logical person in this episode; how, as always, the security team are written as trigger happy dolts for Picard to yell at; and how the Chinese fingertraps go absolutely nowhere. “Acquisition” 20th-anniversary reflections. When a group space bandits find the Enterprise adrift in space and board the ship, one thing is immediately noticeable: they have huge ears. That's right, they are Ferengi … and the year is 2151, some 213 years before first contact with humans as seen in “The Last Outpost.” With the crew unconscious, the aliens begin looting the ship. Once they wake Archer, they find themselves in a battle of wits as the captain, Trip, and T'Pol work to free the ship of Ferengi greed. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 20th-anniversary retrospective that takes you through all of Star Trek: Enterprise, one episode at a time. In this installment, we explore “Acquisition” to find out who has the lobes to win control of the ship in a story that raises many questions. We discuss continuity, the creative challenges faced by writers in a massive franchise such as Star Trek, and what makes the use of one alien species early in the timeline succeed while another use falls short. This week on Episode 469 of Priority One --- We ‘Trek Out' what's coming to Comic-Con@Home, and our thoughts on the Lower Decks Trailer! In Star Trek gaming, we share with you which game developers are taking actions for a more equitable future, and we relieve several old favorites - like Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Sir Patrick Stewart Turns 80 As far as Birthday's go, 80 is an incredible milestone -- And when you're Sir Patrick Stewart, everyone wants to recognize your achievements! On June 13th, Sir Patrick celebrated his 80th Birthday and friends, fans, and news outlets did their very best to honor the veteran actor. The Guardian, for instance, interviewed several of SirtPatStew's friends and colleagues to share some of their most memorable moments with the actor. For instance, David Tennant had this to say, "He's fit as a fiddle and so strapping! How many 80-year-olds are the lead in their own science fiction series? There's nothing of the 'old man' about him. He's very virile – I'm sure he wouldn't mind me saying that!" Sir Ian McKellen told The Guardian, "Eighty is, of course, a milestone but he has had so many remarkable achievements in his careering journey from Huddersfield, to Stratford, the West End, Hollywood, to Broadway and beyond, I'm sure there will be no silly talk about retirement." And - of course - many of his co-stars from TNG joined him for a celebration and shared a picture of them together. Fortunately, they were all wearing their masks and maintaining social distancing! Happy Birthday, Sir Patrick! https://twitter.com/berman_rick/status/1282867166321098752?s=21 Robert Sallin & a new Trek Film On July 9th, Den Of Geek's Don Kaye spoke with Robert Sallin -- producer on the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. According to Kaye, during an interview about the film, Sallin hinted that he's currently in the process of developing a script for a new Star Trek Film. I don't have it completely written, but I have a lot of it written. I have a concept for another Star Trek feature that I've had discussions with Paramount about — at least on the phone. This one I guarantee you is unlike anything that has been done in Star Trek, and it will be part of the canon, but they (the studio) don't want to talk about it until they see what Noah Hawley does. -Robert Sallin via Den of Geek Comic-Con@Home w/ Star Trek The pandemic may have put a damper on most of our plans this year --- including the cancellation or rescheduling or re-imagining of convention events. San Diego Comic Con for instance, has shifted their presentations to an online format and Star Trek will be participating in several ways. Generally, the event takes place Wednesday July 22 - Sunday, July 26. However, you don't have to stay glued to your computer all three days for the Star Trek Studded events. Thursday, July 23 @ 10AM PT, The Star Trek Universe Virtual Panel will feature discussions with Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman & Heather Kadin -- Followed by a virtual table read of Star Trek Discovery's episode “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2” with many of the episode's featured actors. Later, Mike McMahan takes the virtual stage to discuss the new animated comedy series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” McMahan will be joined by several of the voice actors from the series including Tawny Newsom, Jack Quaid and more. It all wraps with a “Star Trek: Picard” panel that includes Sir Patrick Steward himself along with fan favorites like Jonathan Frakes, Jonathan Del Arco, Marina Sirtis, and Jeri Ryan -- among many of the other key actors from the series. During an Instagram Livestream, Mary Chieffo expressed enthusiasm over the prospect of returning as L'Rell in the new Pike Series: “Strange New Worlds” ---- It would be nice to see a discussion about what the world will look like in this series set in the same universe as Star Trek Discovery. Who else could reprise their roles? https://www.instagram.com/tv/CCeW1mtJLdT/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link Lower Decks - Trailer If you were up early and perusing social media on Sunday, July 12th, your feed may have been flooded with tweets about a leaked trailer for the new animated series, “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” But, before long, Star Trek's official websites and social media channels went ahead and officially released it to the masses. The 2-minute and 15 second video takes us on a wild ride aboard the USS Cerritos and provides a sneak peak of the show's overall tone. We also get a solid peak into the types of characters we'll be following like Jack Quaid's Ensign Boimler and Tawny Newsome's Ensign Mariner. https://youtu.be/V3RkBKedKWw Grant Imahara Before we move on, Captains - we need to take a moment and remember the life of Grant Imahara - who passed away suddenly on June 13th. Imahara - who is best known for his role on Mythbusters and - later, portrayed Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek: Continues. He was only 49 years old. Silence Continues We're still holding our coverage of updates from Star Trek Online but, thought it prudent to share with you a list of other game developers who have stepped up to support social justice, equality, and the Black Lives Matter Movement. Blizzard has donated to several organizations Bungie has designed items to sell with all the proceeds going towards Equal Justice Initiative Niantic (Pokemon Go) is donating $5Mil to "Black gaming and AR creators that can live on the Niantic platform" and "US nonprofit organizations that are helping local communities rebuild." EA is donating $1Million to the Equal Justice Initiative, the NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund, and other organizations Ubisoft is making a $100,000 donation to the NAACP This is but a short list of game developers and companies who have taken measurable actions to support Social Justice and Equality. Gamespot has a very extensive list --- links will be in the shownotes. Star Trek Timelines Event: “Lightbringers” by Thomas Reynolds After last week's Flashback to Dozaria, Star Trek Timelines returns to the future...present...whatever, with “Lightbringers”. The Galaxy-type Event runs from this Thursday, July 16th, to Monday July 20th for the Romulan Star Empire, Federation, and Ferengi Traditionalist factions, with 5-star Mother L'Rell as the Ranked Reward crewmember. Event crew granting high bonuses for “Lightbringers” include last week's Ranked Reward 5-star Kamin, the new 4-star Traveler Wesley, and the returning 4-star Commander Tomalak. Other Picard and Wesley variants will grant small bonuses. Star Trek Timelines' Offer Wall Comes Tumbling Down on iOS by Thomas Reynolds https://stevivor.com/news/potential-star-trek-timelines-privacy-issue-sees-resources-shut-protest/ Well, that didn't take long. On July 10th Star Trek Timelines developer Wicked Realms announced it was removing its controversial Offer Wall feature from the iOS app indefinitely. Ostensibly this is because “due to Apple guidelines the offers that can be presented on iOS are too limited to be of interest.” Third-party developers taking issue with Apple's App Store constraints is certainly nothing new, and it's significant that the Wall's alive and well on the game's Android version. However, recent player base outcry (and fan resource website outages) protesting perceived privacy threats almost certainly influenced the decision. Wicked Realms acknowledged “ongoing concerns regarding the Offer Wall in general” and their advertising partner ironSource's business practices in particular. The Last Outpost Provides Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force Holomatch For Download by Shane Hoover https://twitter.com/Last_Outpost/status/1281447523933093889 Star Trek Voyager premiered twenty five years ago, in 1995. Five years after that, the series debuted its first video game, “Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force”. And now, 20 years later, a community of Trek gamers called The Last Outpost has rereleased the multiplayer platform of “Elite Force” for free download. Called “Star Trek: Voyager Elite Force Holomatch”, the game is available for Windows and Linux PC's. In a tweet posted July 9th, The Last Outpost announced, /QUOTE/ 2020 is a milestone year. The Last Outpost is 10 years old today, Raven Software celebrated 30 years, and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force turns 20 this September. Eight years ago, Raven and Viacom CBS graciously gave us permission to distribute the game's code and assets. We at The Last Outpost are eternally grateful to Raven and ViacomCBS for their generosity. In honor of our 10th anniversary, we pass this gift along to the thousands of Star Trek fans who grew up playing this game and loving it as much as we do. /ENDQUOTE/ A link to the download, and to The Last Outpost's website can be found in our show notes. Honestly, “Identity Crisis” is so solid it's hard to talk about. In retrospect, we spend a lot of time nitpicking here, but at least we didn't talk about using Troi more. The thing about “Identity Crisis” is that it's an episode which has some of the series' most intriguing unanswered questions. I don't mean that in terms of not explaining motivations which stretch our understanding of how the universe works (“Why did they do that?”), but instead it asks us to build on the universe with the implications of its story (“What kind of life form would reproduce like this?”). Speculation from the hip is that a once-sentient species wanted to hide themselves. It's frustrating that The Next Generation almost completely abandons the incredibly common phenomenon of advanced, destroyed civilizations. You see hints of that in “Future Imperfect” and “The Last Outpost,” with Barash being the last of his people and the T'kon Empire being destroyed, but it's still very rare. There's another one of my Pax Americana rants in there, I'm sure, but the idea that these people made themselves into invisible monsters to preserve their peoples'…??? in the face of…??? tickles all of my cool story senses
I love that The Next Generation continues the trend for long-lost alien civilizations whose ruins we tread respectfully upon until those ruins whip out laser and try to kill us and we're forced to reflect on--DAMN FERENGI!
The crew of the Enterprise discovers a long lost civilization! But they'll have to contend with the Ferengi if they want to leave this outpost alive!Cam apologizes for these creepy aliens. But Dan will have to relax and hope they get better!
This time, the Pavement Pounders discuss the 1944 Fredric Brown short story “Arena”, which was adapted into a Star Trek TOS episode (S1E18), may have inspired the TNG episode “The Last Outpost” (S1E5), and there’s also an Outer Limits episode, “Fun and Games (S1E27).” Big thanks to Rich O’Donnell for sending us the suggestion! It's a "first appearances" week on SSHB! First up, the Ferengi step out of the foreshadows in "The Last Outpost," and oh boy they are NOT exactly the cool new enemies they were made out to be. After that, we first meet The Traveler in the guise of the assistant to warp propulsion "expert" Kosinski, who claims his incomprehensible equations can upgrade the warp efficiency of the "Enterprise" in "Where No One Has Gone Before." Things don't go great. And then they get worse when Wesley gets a job on the bridge. Also this week: even "Enterprise"-D security is shoddy, everyone's favorite TNG character, and Wesley's obvious lack of friends. Content warning: Yar's rape gangs make another appearance, and we discuss some real-world sexual harassment that happened during TNG's production Timestamps: synopses: 0:53; The Last Outpost: 8:22; Where No One Has Gone Before: 35:45
Anne-Marie and Peter brave the first season of TNG once more, with the introduction of the Ferengi in The Last Outpost, and The Traveller in Where No One Has Gone Before. Will Anne-Marie's sanity be tested to the limit by Peter's completism, or will there be a mutiny? Next time, recording Thursday 4th August, we… Read more →

Aron Eisenberg Talks Nog and Star Trek. Deep Space Nine did wonders for the Ferengi, transforming them from campy comic-relief villains into a mirror for ourselves and what we're like today. Although Quark got the headline role, his brother Rom and nephew Nog made perhaps the biggest strides. Nog in particular went from thieving kid in “Emissary” to a Starfleet officer by the final season, showing a depth of character equal to that of any other member of the crew. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing are joined by the man who brought Nog to life: Aron Eisenberg. Aron shares the story of how he landed the role, how he had to rely on “The Last Outpost” for Ferengi guidance, the evolution of the character from Jake's friend to Starfleet officer, and much more. We also talk about Aron's upcoming appearance at the 2050 Daytona Beach con in Florida, and his current health situation which includes ongoing kidney dialysis and the search for a donor. Andrew, Alex and James return to talk about the Federation's first contact with the Ferengi The post First Contact: ‘The Last Outpost' Season 1 Episode 4 appeared first on The Spoilist.
The Last Outpost. When The Next Generation premiered the writers attempted to establish a new archenemy for the crew. Unfortunately, the introduction turned into a disaster. Reference to the Ferengi was made in the series pilot, but conflicting views on what this enemy should be like—and mindboggling choices by the director—turned what was meant to be fear and menance into comedic gold. It's too bad, too, because the story that introduced the Ferengi had a lot of potential. In this episode of The Ready Room we're joined by Charlynn Schmiedt to discuss “The Last Outpost,” where it succeeds in connecting with the best of Star Trek, and where it went terribly wrong. In news we cover LeVar Burton's gift to The Ready Room—an on-stage barrel roll—La-la Land Records' upcoming 15-disc collection of TOS music, the CBS and Netflix renewal of Star Trek streaming, Larry Nemecek's new “TREKLAND: On Speaker” interview collection, and Rod Roddenberry's new podcast Mission Log. Plus our roving reporter Sara Van Cleve calls in live from Star Trek Las Vegas, and we debate what costume Greg should wear to next year's con.
