Cork producer Ruairi Lynch aka Bantum and Listowel-based rapper as Gaeilge Séamus Ó Súilleabháin aka Súil Amháin are the guests on this episode of the TPOE podcast. Bantum has just released his third solo album, which is self-titled, and he also produced, mixed, and mastered the debut album by Súil Amháin, which is called athPhORT. They talk about how they got together, collaborating, and the ideas behind some of their tracks - 'Aisling Fhéile' off athPhORT, for example, was inspired by the River Feale, but there's so much more underlying that. Bantum also talks about feeling particularly creative and creating his latest solo effort. 'An Pláinéad Tiar' by Listowel poet and rapper Súil Amháin. The song flips the idea of the abandoned An tOileán Tiar (Blasket Island i.e Western Isle) into An Pláinéad Tiar (the Western Planet) and humans coming back to visit earth as a 'heritage' site. athPhORT is a new album by Súil Amháin & Bantum. On this episode, we are joined by Rev. Gail Song Bantum, Lead Pastor of Quest Church, which recently voluntarily cut ties with its denomination—the Evangelical Covenant Church—because of its hard right turn on LGBTQIA+ inclusion. Pastor Gail was invited to speak with us today, because she is an eye witness to a profound come-to-Jesus moment taking place right now inside of white evangelical denominations. She posted her letter to the denomination online. Lisa read it. We are going to talk about it. We'd love to hear your thoughts. Tweet to Lisa @LisaSHarper or to Freedom Road @FREEDOMROADUS. Welcome back to Episode 2 of Season 3 of Transforming Engagement, The Podcast. This season, we're talking about organizational identity and the role of the leader. In this episode, we spoke with Pastor Gail Song Bantum about her identity as a second-generation Korean woman and as a pastor and leader, and Quest's identity as a congregation in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. As a leader of a “multi church,” Gail Song Bantum describes how her identity impacts her congregation's identity and, in turn, how it is understood both by congregation members and the community at large. In each episode, we ask our guest to highlight an organization that is doing work. Gail Song Bantum brought our attention to Good Foot Arts Collective, an organization with a passionate focus on ending violence before it begins, providing domestic abuse awareness and youth violence prevention advocacy through Arts Education.

For years, others have asked Gail Song Bantum and Brian Bantum to reveal the secret to their marriage as a multiracial Christian couple with high-profile ministry callings. They're doing that in their new book, Choosing Us: Marriage and Mutual Flourishing in a World of Difference. This book reveals the lessons, mistakes, and principles that have helped the Bantums navigate race, family history, and gender dynamics in their twenty-plus years of marriage, while inspiring readers to pursue mutual flourishing in their marriages and relationships. Today on Connections, Brian shares the secrets that helped them make it through their marriage. He'll also chat about the book and why they decided to write it. Marriage is hard... really hard! Two people enter into a life-long promise to love one another as both people continue to change, grow and become. Two people bring their whole selves into an incredibly intimate relationship where cultural realities clash and sparks fly. Our ethnic identities, personalities and family of origin baggage all gets unpacked in the context of marriage. Our guests this week have written a beautiful book that takes a nuanced approach to partnerships of all kinds and speaks truth, love and hope! Gail Song Bantum and Brian Bantum join us to share about their new book "Choosing Us" and share some of their perspective on how we can cultivate mutual flourishing in the midst of such diversity in our romantic partnerships! We talk about gender roles, unhealthy expectations, patriarchy and the fact that we never arrive at "perfect partner" status. Then we reimagined Ephesians 5:21-32 and Brian reminds us of the context of the passage and takes us back to the garden. Why are there so many bad marriage books? Marriage is anything but one-size-fits-all, and it's long past time we had a fresh vision of marriage - one that's good news for every kind of person and sexuality. Dr. Brian and Rev. Gail Song Bantum join us to pull back the curtain on their terrific new book CHOOSING US.
Gail Song Bantum and Brian Bantum join us on the podcast today. Gail is the Lead Pastor of Quest Church in Seattle and Brian is a Professor of Theology at Garrett Seminary. We spend some time talking about what it's like for Gail to be a woman leading a church, about Brian's work on the Mulatto Jesus, and then we get into creating space for mutual flourishing in marriage. They share with us a bit of what that journey has looked like for them and share insights that they've learned about how we might create space for each partner to be able to flourish in our marriages. In this episode, we talk about the radical and inclusive love of God, how the movement of the Spirit does not always make sense, and always choosing conviction over conformity.
Could the word slíbhín - a sly, sneaky so-and-so - possibly come from the word sliabh, meaning a mountain? Are mountain folk really that cunning, or do the people from counties with many a sliabh (counties where more Irish was historically spoken) just happen to have more fire in the belly when they move to the lowlands in search of work? In the third of our series on the recurring Irish words in placenames, Darach and Peadar discuss sliabh and cnoc (mountain and hill). What’s the difference between a mountain and a hill? We’ll tell you. Is Sliabh Ailp so named because it looks like it belongs in the Alps? If McGillycuddy reeks, why doesn’t he take a shower? Why does the Irish for Sugarloaf not have the word siúcra in it? And what’s the deal with Ben Bulben? All will be answered! Today's episode features Pastor Gail Song Bantum preaching on John Chapter 8 as part of a series on the book of John called Deeper at Quest Church in Seattle. Here is an excerpt from Gail's bio on her BLOG: who am i? a second generation korean-american who doesn’t speak much korean, often mistaken for mixed-race, the black community is like family, love soul and latin music. and i LOVE me some food! –past and future: for nearly 20 years, i have led worship and pastored in congregations ranging the span of non-denominational charismatic churches to liturgical methodist services. i have a passion and calling to see the life of discipleship and worship within the church expressed in ways that transcend cultural, denominational, and generational boundaries through creative arts and diverse giftings represented in the body of christ. recently, i have also found great passion in sharing life, mentorship, and leadership nuggets that i’ve learned over the years with up and coming leaders -especially with young women and men of color. i received my mdiv degree from duke divinity school and my bachelors degree from the eastman school of music in rochester, new york in music performance and conducting. i am enjoying and consider it a privilege to be serving as the executive pastor at quest church in seattle, washington. –my life and loves: i have been married for 19 years to brian, the most amazing man ever! we met in college right after my mother passed away and we managed a long distance relationship for two LONG years! (and this was back before cell phones and email!!!) the joys of my life are our three beautiful sons: caleb, ezra, and joseph. we love hikes, listening to music, all things christmas and of course, you wouldn’t be a bantum if you didn’t love to eat;) -i LOVE to think, discuss, teach and embody what it means for our lives, as the church, to endlessly reverberate with the song of our fervent desire for the One who continually creates, gifts, and sustains all of life. i also LOVE LOVE LOVE to mentor and raise up next generation leaders and have found fulfillment in celebrating the successes, gifts and strengths in others.

This week marks the one-year anniversary of the passing of the phenomenal Prince. As such, the NO ENCORE crew felt it only right and proper to pay tribute to The Purple One with an in-depth Listening Guide for newcomers, novices, die-hards and everyone in between. That’s just one highlight of a Bantum-assisted episode which also features […] La entrada NO ENCORE #056 | Contrasting Styles se publicó primero en Headstuff.
Ruairi Lynch aka Bantum released his second album Move in October. We talk about his finding the inspiration to get going on album #2, the sometimes difficult recording of it, how great Rusangano Family are and what his plans are. Also about going to a wedding where some of Dirty Dancing was filmed. So a wide-ranging chat, I think it's fair to say. It's also the last TPOE podcast of 2016. Come back on January 9 for more arts and books and music talk

Battles tell me about a song they love. Kind of. New music from Enemies, Hiss Golden Messenger, No Monster Club, Pinegrove, Civil Civic, C Duncan, Cloud Nothings, Bantum, Sand, The Radio Dept., We Cut Corners and Autumn is a good time to play a bit of The Notwist, so let's do that. Sure, any time is good to play The Notwist. Right? RIGHT? Brian Bantum teaches theology at Seattle Pacific University out in the mighty Northwest. This spring when he and Callid were both at the Christian Leadership Forum of FTE they sat down to talk about Brian's book Redeeming Mulatto: A Theology of Race and Christian Hybridity. Because they are in a hotel lobby there a bit of background noise, but it is such a terrific interview that you'll want to listen all the way through anyway If you want to followup on this conversation another great resource is this video of Brian giving a talk called "The Church Cannot be About Multiculturalism" at Quest Church's annual day conference on Faith & Race. Bantum is on twitter as well. Special thanks to our sponsors at Phillips Theological Seminary and Chalice Press: their sponsorship helps us keep getting these out to you for free.
