In this episode of the HSE Talking Health and Wellbeing Podcast, we explore the challenges young people face when navigating alcohol in Ireland today. Martina Byrne, Manager of Cross Care Ronanstown Youth Service, and Sive Brennan, a Leaving Cert student and junior youth worker, join us for an insightful discussion on peer pressure, societal attitudes, and the impact of alcohol on young people. Martina highlights the critical services Cross Care provides, supporting young people through education, youth diversion programmes, and mental health initiatives. She also emphasises the importance of delaying alcohol consumption due to its negative effects on brain development and overall wellbeing. Sive shares her first-hand experiences in youth work, discussing the role of education and supportive environments in helping young people resist peer pressure. She also explores the financial and health consequences of alcohol use and the growing trend of zero-alcohol beverages, questioning their impact on youth drinking culture. For parents and educators, this episode offers practical advice on fostering open conversations, setting a positive example, and building trust to help young people make informed choices. It reinforces the vital role parents play in shaping attitudes towards alcohol and guiding their children towards healthier decisions. Piše Tonja Jelen, bereta Igor Velše in Eva Longyka Marušič. S prečiščenim jezikom in erudicijo nas vabijo v bogat svet in razmišljanje o vseh razponih in oddaljitvah v življenju o svetu in intimi.
Episode Description: Join Paul Boyce, PE, PG, President and CEO of PWGC, as he hosts Elizabeth Knauer, Esq., Principal at Sive, Paget & Riesel, and a seasoned expert in environmental law, for an in-depth discussion on PFAS regulations, CERCLA implications, and Superfund designations. PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals used in various industrial applications and consumer products including firefighting foams, water-repellent fabrics, and coatings for food packaging. Elizabeth shares her extensive experience in litigating environmental contamination cases and the emerging regulatory landscape surrounding PFAS, a persistent contaminant affecting public water supplies nationwide. Co-hosting this episode is Derek Ersbak, Vice President of Environmental Services at PWGC, adding his technical insights on groundwater contamination and the environmental impact of industrial waste. Learn about the latest developments in PFAS regulation, how it affects industries, and what's being done to manage contamination sites. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Daithí chats to Harrison Gardner, of the brilliant social enterprise Common Knowledge, which delivers practical course in upskilling and self-sufficiency in the Burren, County Clare. We covered a lot in this conversation, from reconnecting to the value of the objects we use every day, to the huge demand for their courses from people who want to be more handy around the house. Common knowledge is very socially engaged also, providing access courses to some participants who couldn't afford to attend, as well as looking to marginalised communities like LGBTQ+ groups to find new solutions to the climate crisis. At the end of the conversation we feature a reflection on Climate Action and a song from musical artist, Sive. She is a former Climate Ambassador - as well as an amazing songwriter and musician!

**Content Warning: Child SA, abuse, r*pe, suic*de ideation** We have learned about people who grow up in abusive environments who don't have a good chance of breaking that cycle while they are still in the cult bubble. But what about the people who understand abuse not only goes unnoticed in these cults, but is even celebrated, and they join for this reason? Hannah's story illustrates how when the outside world can clearly see a group where abuse thrives, and they don't want to get caught, they can take advantage of the group's strict principles in the name of God, putting children in danger. “I stuck with what I care about,” Rebecca Sive is proud to say after working as a political activist and strategist for more than five decades. And she is still pushing for what she believes in with relentless persistence. Her interest in politics started young. She joined her father at the age of 8 as he campaigned for Congress. Her activism grew in college as she witnessed inequality within her campus and throughout the area, leading her to become a community organizer and later, when she moved to Chicago, an advisor to celebrities, business leaders, public officials, political candidates, philanthropists, and organizational leaders. She shares with Jeanne the meaning of sisterhood, the importance of being a present member in your community, why several heads are better than one, how to dissect a failure to learn from your mistakes, and some special insights into working with Chicago's first Black mayor Harold Washington. About Rebecca: Rebecca Sive is the author of three books on American women's politics and power; a women's leadership strategist, motivational speaker, experienced media analyst, and a past faculty member of the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and statewide governmental official. She co-produced and co-hosted the podcast, #VoteHerIn, with Two Broads Talking Politics, a “best political podcast,” according to Parade magazine. Sive's articles and op-eds have appeared in The Huffington Post, Crain's Chicago Business, The Hill, at MSNBC, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Chicago Sun-Times, and elsewhere. Rebecca is the founding director of one of the nation's first women's centers, founding commissioner of the Illinois Human Rights Commission, a leader and advisor of the campaign to elect Chicago's first African American mayor (Harold Washington), and appointee of his as a Commissioner, Chicago Park District. Sive was among the national decision makers who developed women's issues agendas for US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. She holds an M.A. in American History and is the recipient of many awards for her public leadership, including from the United Negro College Fund, the YWCA, the Jaycees, and her alma maters, the University of Illinois, and Carleton College. She is listed in Feminists Who Changed America, University of Illinois Press (2006).
One of the federal government's largest contracts for commercial products and services is in a paradox as the General Services Administration is taking it through a complex consolidation process.Noted GSA watcher and Schedule contract specialist Courtney Fairchild returns to WT 360 to provide an update on where the consolidation is now, next steps for companies to take and why they should view their actions as a series of business decisions versus purely administrative work.Fairchild's role as CEO of the proposal consultancy Global Services Inc. means she is continuously peppered with questions on what companies should do next in this third phase of the Multiple Award Schedule consolidation. Consider this episode a collection of "Frequently Asked Questions" on pitfalls to avoid.GSA's end goal for the consolidation is simplicity for agencies and companies alike. Simplicity should also drive contractors' actions in order to make the process straightforward for GSA employees, as Fairchild told our Ross Wilkers. For more background and context, here are two articles written by Fairchild on the consolidation:Top Four Ways to Avoid MAS Modification Rejections in 2023MAS Contractors: Keep These Things in Mind for 2023
Happy New Year! Welcome to another episode of Outrage + Optimism, where we examine issues at the forefront of the climate crisis, interview change-makers, and transform our anger into productive dialogue about building a sustainable future. After a well-spent hiatus, the team returns with the first episode of what we hope to be an amazing year documenting climate progress! We know from previous years that many people discover the podcast over our break, so If you're a new listener, we're thrilled you're here! In today's episode, co-hosts Christiana Figueres, Tom Rivett-Carnac, and Paul Dickinson catch up on what's been happening in climate over the last few weeksーand what's to come in 2023. First up, the team chats about their break and the importance of taking time to reflect and cultivate equanimity, self-care, and inner strength. And speaking of inner strength, what about the brave decision of New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, to leave office after five remarkable years? Our co-hosts weigh in with some thought-provoking insights. There's talk of Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the controversial pick to be the president of COP28—this year's UN climate conference, which is set to be held in Dubai. Al Jaber is the Minister for Industry and Advanced Technology and Managing Director and Group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). Check out Christiana's Op-Ed on Al Jaber in The New Statesman. This year will also mark the first global stocktake (GST), the process designed to assess the world's progress toward achieving the purpose behind the landmark Paris Agreement. Oh, and Paul's “friend” wrote a poem about Christianaーyou'll have to listen to find out what rhymes with “emissions.” Finally, we leave you this week with the beautifully haunting track “Oh Mother” from Sive. The topic of sex work can illicit strong stereotypes, incorrect assumptions, and ill-advised suggestions on how this issue should or should not be addressed by the criminal legal system and society in general. Regardless of what comes to mind, people who engage in sex work frequently face dehumanizing treatment simply based on what they do for a living – who they ARE is rarely part of the equation. Our goal this season was to humanize many of the controversial and misunderstood topics related to sexual harm by speaking to the people directly impacted by them. In “Understanding Sex Work” we speak to Sive Sanchez – a person that has engaged in sex work for many years in San Francisco. During our conversation, they demystify what sex work is, who does it, and why. Sive also shares some of the struggles they have faced and many of them stem from the fact that sex work is illegal. There has been a significant shift to decriminalize sex work. A critical part of this conversation has to do with police interactions with sex workers. Research shows that in criminalized contexts, sex workers are often physically or sexually coerced by police through threat of detention, violence (including rape) or extortion. Due to discrimination and mistrust of police and the high risk of being arrested, sex workers are not likely to report crimes against them or cooperate with the police in investigations. Decriminalization would also eliminate the fear of arrest that frequently prevents sex workers from seeking justice and would better protect sex workers from violence at the hands of their clients (see list of resources below). We learned a lot from our conversation with Sive and believe that their story is invaluable for you to hear. We hope this will encourage you to lean into difficult conversations and share what you have learned here. As always, we thank you for continuing to journey with us Beyond Fear.
When Patti (Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School) and Hazel (Dean of the College of Science and Professor of Biology at Northeastern University) entered the research world, they had few role models and even fewer mentors. Collegiate research, dominated by men at the time, was a difficult one to navigate as women and young mothers. They had to forge their own paths to success. In this podcast, they look back at their beginnings, chat about how they made their way to the top of their specialties, and stress the importance of their roles as mentors and role models for young women entering research today. Their rapport is engaging and their stories inspiring. We are proud to celebrate them during Women's History Month.
