Patrick Louchouarn, PhD, is our inspiring guest on the Faculty Factory Podcast this week. And speaking of inspiration, as discussed in this rich conversation, faculty members in general truly inspire Dr. Louchouarn with their creativity, engagement, and commitment to their profession. In fact, those who chose the path of academic health are particularly compelling to Dr. Louchouarn because much of their work is rooted in the fundamental question: “How can I improve health for others—individuals, communities, or through specific procedures like surgeries or prosthetics?” This mindset is quite extraordinary, and according to Dr. Louchouarn, it embodies maximum altruism. The one thing to be extra cautious about is that if we don't start conversations about purpose and core values, a disconnect may occur. The further we stray from the original motivation—the story of why someone chose to enter this particular health field—the greater that disconnect becomes, as discussed in this interview. Qasim Ijaz Qasim Ijaz is the director of cybersecurity at a leading healthcare organization, overseeing detection, incident response, vulnerability management, purple teaming, and cybersecurity engineering. With a strong background in offensive security and risk management, he has helped organizations strengthen their defenses against evolving threats. He is also a dedicated educator, mentoring professionals and sharing his expertise at conferences such as BSides and Black Hat. You don't need to go far in the news these days to find out that another organization was hacked. Data breeches are a nightmare scenario for both leaders and the people they support. In this episode, Qasim and I explore what your team and you can do to be a bit more prepared. Key Points Use multi-factor authentication, passphrases, and a password manager. Freeze your personal credit reports. Do this for free directly with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Leaders in bigger roles (executives, CEOs, board members) are larger targets for hackers due to their access and also their ability to occasionally side-step organizational guidelines. It's the non-technical pieces of a cyber response that organizations are least prepared for. Conduct incident response and disaster recovery tabletop exercises to uncover vulnerabilities before an attack. Regardless of organizational policy, employees will use AI. The best prevention assumes the inevitability of human behavior and works with it to improve systems. In this episode, we welcome Janet Foutty, former Chair and Consulting CEO at Deloitte, and co-author of the insightful book "Arrive and Thrive: 7 Impactful Practices for Women Navigating Leadership." Janet shares her journey from the corporate world to becoming a thought leader in women's leadership development. We delve into why, despite her demanding career at Deloitte, Janet chose to invest her time in developing thought leadership. Janet emphasizes that in professional services and consulting, thought leadership is crucial for staying ahead in the market and providing valuable insights to clients. Janet reveals the inspiration behind "Arrive and Thrive" and how a collaboration with Simmons University sparked the idea. Together with Simmons' president, Lynn Perry Wooten, they aimed to explore not just how women arrive in leadership positions, but also how they thrive once they get there. This concept of continual arrival and thriving resonates deeply in the careers of many women, prompting Janet and Lynn to craft a book that goes beyond their own experiences by incorporating insights from interviews with various professionals. We uncover the process of testing ideas for the book, including reaching out to successful clients for their input. Despite initial apprehensions, Janet was overwhelmed by the positive responses, reinforcing the value of meaningful connections in professional circles. With the book now published, Janet reflects on the impact it has had, sparking engaging conversations with women in leadership roles and even influencing discussions with men on leadership principles. The book has become a catalyst for diverse conversations and has expanded Janet's outreach beyond her previous endeavors. Join us as we explore the journey of leadership with Janet Foutty, from arrival to thriving, and discover the insights she's gained along the way. Three Key Takeaways: * Developing thought leadership is necessary to stay ahead of market trends and to provide valuable insights to clients. * Many thought leaders have valuable experiences they could incorporate into a book. However, by including the experiences of others you can validate and elevate your ideas. * Maintaining a professional network of people you trust and who trust you in return can prove valuable far beyond the sales cycle.

Lynn Perry Wooten: The Prepared Leader Lynn Perry Wooten is a seasoned academic and an expert on organizational development and transformation. She became the ninth president of Simmons University on July 1, 2020 and is the first African American to lead the university. Her research specializes in crisis leadership, diversity and inclusion, and positive leadership—organizational behavior that reveals and nurtures the highest level of human potential. Lynn has also had a robust clinical practice, providing leadership development, education, and training for a wide variety of companies and institutions, from the Kellogg Foundation to Harvard University's Kennedy School, and to Google. She is the coauthor of Arrive and Thrive: 7 Impactful Practices for Women Navigating Leadership and the coeditor of Positive Organizing in a Global Society: Understanding and Engaging Differences for Capacity Building and Inclusion. She is also the author with Erika James of The Prepared Leader: Emerge from Any Crisis More Resilient Than Before*. In this conversation, Lynn and I discuss why crises are not isolated events, even through they are often treated that way. We explore the critical nature of trust and how to build it quickly in crisis. We then detail three key areas of trust that will help leaders begin to help a team shift towards better outcomes. Key Points Crises are not single events. They happen again and again, necessitating leaders preparation for them. In normal times, trust is key. In a time of crisis, it's essential. Regular communication is essential in a crisis. Avoid the tendency to downplay risks. In fact, it's useful to paint a picture of the worst case scenario. Leaders need to determine is there is a strong sense of a contractual obligation between them and their teams. It's critical for leaders to assess the competence of their team to be able to respond to the crisis at hand. Frequent, high performance meetings are essential during a time of crisis. It's annoying, but it's true. People don't like to be controlled. But we can make choices about how we show up. So what we want to do is we want to narrow the gap between the time we are triggered and the time we react, enough to take pause between stimulus and response. That's it. WENDY GROUNDS: Welcome to Manage This. This is the podcast by project managers for project managers. I'm Wendy Grounds, and with me in the studio is Bill Yates. BILL YATES: Yes. Our guest is Susan Mackenty Brady. She is the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Chair for Women and Leadership at Simmons University, and the first Chief Executive Officer of the Simmons University Institute for Inclusive Leadership. As a relationship expert, leadership well-being coach, author and speaker, our guest Susan educates leaders and executives globally on fostering self-awareness for optimal leadership. WENDY GROUNDS: The reason we're talking to Susan today is she has sent us a book called “Arrive and Thrive: 7 Impactful Practices for Women Navigating Leadership,” which she has co-authored with Janet Foutty and Lynn Perry Wooten. You know, women who arrive at the top should be able to thrive at the top. There's a lot of talk about how to get there. But then once you get there, are you just surviving, or are you thriving in those positions as women in leadership? And so we hope that this is going to be a really helpful book and a helpful conversation to women who are project managers and trying to figure out how to flourish in leadership roles today. BILL YATES: Yeah, I can attest. There's great value in this book, regardless of male or female. WENDY GROUNDS: Susan, welcome to Manage This. Thank you so much for being our guest. SUSAN MACKENTY BRADY: Thank you for having me. Arrive and Thrive - The Book WENDY GROUNDS: Yeah, we're excited to talk about this book. To start off, won't you tell us why you wrote this book? SUSAN MACKENTY BRADY: You know, there's two answers to that question. You want both? There's first a real answer about how it came to be, which was because I am not an academic. I have been in business and specifically in leadership development. I've been a student and teacher of leadership since I can recall. I've a Master's in Behavioral Science and Leadership Education. And I have to say, when I came to Simmons University and was awarded the endowed chair, it's the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Chair for Women in Leadership, my first question is what does one do to be worthy of an endowed chair in an academic environment? Because I actually didn't know that non-PhDs were awarded chairs. Apparently it's more common than we know. But my answer was whatever you want it to be. In this conversation, Susan and I discuss the reality that while we may intend well on inclusion, real change starts with us first. We explore how implicit bias assessments can be useful in discovering where they bias is that we don't see in ourselves. Plus, we examine some of the key actions we can take on relationship building and repair in order to get better. Key Points Most of us intend well, but we often miss the opportunity to move from being an ally (alignment) to being an upstander (taking action in the moment). Utilizing an assessment can help us understand where our implicit biases diverge from our conscious thoughts. Curiosity and relationship-building isn't just for the moment — it's the before, during, and after of conversations to discover how we get better. When we make a misstep, move quickly and purposefully to repair the relationship.
