In this episode, I'm in conversation with Debra Corey and Ken Corey, who have recently released their book Bad Bosses Ruin Lives: The Building Blocks of Being a Great Boss. When I heard about the book, I knew we needed to share it with you, and this is a great discussion where we unpack what it means to be a bad boss but, more importantly, how to be a great boss. This conversation will be over two parts, and in this first part, we'll be talking about what they discovered in their research of bad bosses, what causes bad bosses and their impact. Reality is, even those who are great bosses will have moments that miss the mark - this is about understanding yourself better as a Leader and Manager - how you can help yourself stay aware and keep growing through better awareness. A huge thank you to Debra and Ken for sharing so much about what they found out about Bad bosses. Have you worked for a Bad Boss before, do you see aspects of it in yourself - then get involved in the conversation in the comments or over on LinkedIn. In the next episode, we'll be jumping into what being a Great Boss looks and feels like and how to keep developing. I also asked Debra and Ken what working together on their book was like! Welcome to the second part of my conversation with Debra Corey and Ken Corey where we'll continue to explore the themes of their book called Bad Bosses Ruin Lives: The Building Blocks of Being a Great Boss. In the first part of our conversation, in the previous episode, we looked at what makes a Bad Boss and the impacts of that but in this episode, the focus is on being a Great Boss. How can you, as a Leader or Manager, be great and remembered for that, and how can you continue to learn and develop as a leader - that's what we cover in this episode. I'll also ask them what it was like working together on this project. Thank you to Debra and Ken for joining me in this conversation. I hope you've found it useful. Ah, technology. The double-edged sword of the working world. Cell phones and email have made the world smaller, connecting employers and employees, businesses and customers, and allowing a generation of workers to find opportunities and even launch businesses from anywhere in the world. But they've also blurred the lines between the office and home. A study conducted during the pandemic found that 70 percent of remote workers were clocking in on the weekends. And after-hours emails have become such a problem, that some cities have attempted to make them illegal. Today we talk with Dustin DeVries, co-founder of Caffeine Interactive Technologies, a web mobile development agency with a remote team featuring professionals from across the globe. He discusses his attempts to push back, evening the scales of the work-life balance for himself, and his team. **Have you ever pondered about the following questions?** How do we give people and their happiness the attention they deserve in our organizations and transformations? But in recent years, as competition for quality employees has increased, workplace culture is no longer an afterthought. A good story can change an opinion, can change a vote… it can change the way we see the world and our place in it. But stories also play a powerful role in our working lives. Businesses and organizations can rise or fall based on the stories they tell their employees, their customers, their partners, and the public. Leaders who value storytelling – who eschew boring, artificial corporate jargon in favor of active, intentional, engaging communication – can do more than just hold an entertaining meeting. They can close deals, inspire teams, and transform their organizations in powerful, lasting ways. Don't believe us? That's OK. Because today we sit down with Francisco Mahfuz, a national champion public speaker and one of the most sought-after storytellers and organizational coaches you can find anywhere in the world. At home and in the workplace, happiness can be a balancing act. Our health, family, and finances can often prevent us from focusing on our own enjoyment. But what happens when we make a habit of that? What happens when we start letting other, smaller things take precedence over our happiness? Things like fear, comfortability, self-image, or other people's perceptions of us. What happens when we're so afraid to rock the boat, that we never even get in? Today we sit down with motivational speaker, TV personality and best-selling author Shari Alyse, who spent time struggling with that balancing act, and losing sight of her own happiness. She shares what she's learned about joy, self-discovery, and just how fun it can be, to rock the occasional boat. **Have you ever pondered about the following questions?** How do we give people and their happiness the attention they deserve in our organizations and transformations? Making tough decisions takes on new meaning as Alex describes the challenges of working in urgent care at the height of COVID-19. This episode also features HR leader Debra Corey who shows us how to be rebellious in your work to bring about deeper impact, engagement, and purpose.
One of the surest ways to find both success and happiness in the workplace is to play to your strengths. Figure out what you're good at, and find a role that allows you to apply those skills in a meaningful way. Of course, this sounds easier than it is. Most people might think the difficult part of that equation is the whole “find a job” thing, but the truth is that most of us go through our entire careers without ever really understanding what we're good at – what we do that sets us apart from everyone else. Today we speak with Brandon Miller, one of the first Certified GALLUP Clifton Strengths Finder Coaches in the world, and CEO of 34 Strong, a coaching and consulting firm dedicated to improving employee engagement. He is also Co-Founder of Incredible Family - an agency that helps working parents adopt a strengths-based approach to parenting - and has coauthored multiple books with his wife, Analyn. Brandon discusses how, for nearly 20 years, he has helped employees and business leaders identify their strengths and cultivate happier, more engaging, and more productive careers. **Have you ever pondered about the following questions?** How do we give people and their happiness the attention they deserve in our organizations and transformations? Most of us spend our careers trying to find happiness at work. Sometimes, if we're lucky, we find it. And, if we're really lucky, we can spend part of our careers helping others – our employees, coworkers, or even strangers – find that same happiness in their own lives. Today we sit down with Tia Graham, an international keynote speaker, best-selling author, leadership trainer and "Certified Chief Happiness Officer" with multiple certifications in neuroscience, positive psychology, coaching, and employee retention. Her bestselling book “Be a Happy Leader” offers an eight-step methodology for driving productivity and growth through a culture of happiness. When we talk about a truly happy workplace, the image we often conjure is that of a startup. Ping pong tables, employee coffee bars, mid-day massages… And while perks like these may not be as ubiquitous as they once were in the heyday of the tech boom, startups have permanently changed the way we view work. Today we explore life at a modern tech startup, and how companies and leaders are approaching employee happiness in a post-COVID world. Anna Loew, VP of People at Giant Swarm, joins host Elisa Tuijnder to discuss her company's unique approach to workplace culture and employee investment, which includes the deceptively simple precept: "Treat your employees like adults." Have you ever pondered about the following questions? How do we give people and their happiness the attention they deserve in our organizations and transformations? After 20+ years in the corporate world, Debra Corey wanted to be creative with her own title - Chief Pay It Forward Officer - of her business DebCoHR. Guesting on our show is just one of the many ways that Debra shares her extensive skills and knowledge gathered during her career as an award-winning and respected HR leader at such companies as Gap, Merlin Entertainment and most recently Reward Gateway. Author of 3 books and an in-demand speaker, Debra has a rebellious streak about her which fits our quirky yet professional offering - just take a look at some of her photos and you'll see she really has fun with her serious specialist subject of employee engagement. We discuss how organisations have reacted to, and continue to do so, the massive and rapid changes caused by the pandemic. One of Debra's key philosophies is to step back, take stock and observe other companies' behaviour, good and bad, before setting out your own strategy. And first of all, ask WHY? As a shepherd who was born in London with no farming in his family's background, Chris talks about how he has always been curious. When he first went into farming, he would ask others why they would do something a certain way, their response being "it's always been done like that". It takes courage to plough a new furrow, to challenge the status quo, and Debra agreed that the first two aspects of being a 'rebel' is to ask 'Why?' and to be brave. We always knew Chris was an alternative shepherd - now he's calling himself a Rebel Shepherd! In our short conversation, Debra totally lived up to her reputation as "someone who can educate, excite and entertain all at once" and we aim to lure her back to a future show after her next book is published, on the theme of gratitude, something we touch on and which is so easily omitted in the pressured business environment. It is wholly appropriate for an outdoors team building company podcast guest to have been described as "a breath of fresh air" within her profession! Michelle Hartley rose through the ranks of HR to Director level at Multivac UK and during the pandemic launched her independent HRD business People Sorted. Fittingly, her company offering is "it's HR - but not as we know it". We love Michelle's energy and totally get the fresh air descriptor! And she tells us how it came to be in answering our first question. It's so important to see the world from a different perspective which Michelle is realising having moved from employed to self-employed HRD. Having made the switch during such a volatile time has also made her focus on adaptability and flexibility - her own and of those working in corporate teams.Chris talks about the importance of observing the behaviour of individual sheep (and lambs at the time of recording this show) and what happens when they re-mingle with the flock. This attention to detail and checking in with co-workers one by one is just the same, agrees Michelle and she talks about the increased conscious effort required when leading a remote team.Michelle gives her 3 top tips for overcoming challenges faced by teams whilst working from home, whether this is full-time or part-time going forward. And as usual we finish by asking her to describe, in just 4 words, the most extraordinary team.As always, if this episode has prompted any questions, please go ahead and ask - either email caroline@raisingthebaa.com or leave it in your review!Enjoy - and thank ewe for listening :-)Free resources:Free eBook on how companies have lived their company values during COVID-19, curated and written by Debra Corey, inspirational mentor to Michelle.Sheep, Shepherd or Dog - which one are ewe? Glenn Elliott is the founder and Debra Corey is group reward director of Reward Gateway, a world leader in integrated employee engagement technology with more than 1,800 clients worldwide. Elliott and Corey’s new book, “Build it: The Rebel Playbook for World-Class Employee Engagement” (Wiley, Feb. 27, 2018), highlights practical improvements that organizations can make to build a highly engaged company culture. ----- Why would a successful entrepreneur rebel against common business practices? As Glenn Elliott explains in this podcast, it is imperative that we rebel against common models and age-old perspectives if we want our company to thrive and our employees to stay engaged. During his years as a software engineer and in other corporate settings, Glenn Elliott witnessed more than his share of employee disengagement in the workplace. Knowing that miscommunication breeds mistrust, he founded Reward Gateway in 2006 with a plan to restore engagement among those working in the financial services industry. He stepped down as CEO there in 2017 and currently consults and motivates businesses on ways to bring enthusiasm to the workplace. In this conversation, Glenn Elliott reminds us that engaged employees spend less time distracted, make better decisions, and frequently are a source for innovation. Glenn Elliott believes managers should be connected, humble, and honest to those who report to them. This principle should also apply to other units that have a direct impact on employees. As an example, he also discusses the challenges that many human resources departments face when tough HR decisions have to be made with lawyerly precision. We need to restore the human touch.
