Data speaks only to differences; it doesn't imply that people will not be happy with a raise from $100,000 to $150,000, or that they will be indifferent to an equivalent drop in income. Changes of income in the high range certainly have emotional consequences. #1 Tip for Setting Goals/Resolutions Focus on one major thing at a time! S.M.A.R.T. Goals Specific: Your goals must be specific. They must outline precisely what it is that you would like to achieve. The more detail, the better. Specifically, focus on what you want and not on how you will accomplish these things. Measurable: Your goals must be measurable. Spend some time developing a process that you will use to measure your progress as you work toward your goals. How will you know you are making progress? Attainable: Your goals must be attainable. This effectively means that you must wholeheartedly believe that you can achieve your goals. Realistic: Your goals must be realistic. Your goals are realistic when you have the time, money, resources, and skills needed to achieve the goal. If you lack in any of these areas, then you need to get to work or set a different objective. Timed: Your goals must be timed. You must set a deadline for the achievement of your goal. Without clear deadlines, you will likely succumb to procrastination and instant gratification.   S – Specific (or Significant). M – Measurable (or Meaningful). A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented). R – Relevant (or Rewarding). T – Time-bound (or Trackable).   New Year's Resolutions You Can Actually Stick To Break a Bad Habit – this type of resolution tends to be specific enough that you can actually hold yourself accountable and keep with it. Once you find that you have full control over yourself when it comes to overcoming the bad habit, you might even be inspired to expand that mindset into larger aspects of your life like work, relationships and health.   Try Something New – It's only human nature to stick to what we know. But while it's perfectly fine to have routine and a sense of normalcy in your lives, broadening your horizons to new experiences can only help you grow. Choose one thing you don't usually do or have never done and break out of your comfort zone a bit.   Prioritize Self-Care – Sometimes we are so busy worrying about others that we forget to take time for our mental and physical health. If you feel guilty taking some me-time, keep in mind that there's a difference between taking care of yourself and being self-indulgent.   Mend Relationships – If you want an easy way to get into the whole “new year, new me” mindset, letting go of grudges and mending relationships is a good place to start. At the same time, recognize when someone in your life is toxic or is holding you back in any way. The people you surround yourself with play a role in shaping who you are, so make sure their qualities, personalities, and values and line up in some way with those of your own.   Go Easy On Yourself – Recognize all your hard work and learn when it's time to treat yourself. If you vowed to eat healthier this year that doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself from a delicious meal or a night out with friends. Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your ideas [for the future] into reality. The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you should concentrate your efforts.  You'll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you away from your intended direction/goal. Properly focused goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of setting and achieving them, you'll find that your self confidence improves and your vision grows. Goal setting techniques are used widely in business, sport, academic achievement and also in everyday life. They give you long term vision and short term motivation. They focus your quest of knowledge and help you to organise your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life.   By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals. You can see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. By setting goals, you will also raise your self confidence, as you recognise your ability and competence in achieving the goals that you have set.   From the Book ‘On the Shoulders of Giants' by Rhondalynn Korolak "You control your future, your destiny. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be.  Put your future in good hands – your own." ~ Mark Victor Hansen ~   You have to know what it is you are seeking to achieve in life otherwise it's too easy to drift aimlessly. Years pass like days and next thing you know 20 years have passed and you've still not finished that novel that you started to write, not gone back to school to get that degree, not sorted your financial affairs, never bothered to get around to learning a second language etc. There is one thing that we need to touch on in the context of goal setting – it is the distinction between goals and dreams. And it is this distinction that makes all the difference. Too often, traditional goal setting can seem like a very clinical exercise. Pick up any self-help or business book and it will tell you how to set SMART goals – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. While I agree with the necessity of these basic factors, I also think it is absolutely crucial to incorporate the element of "dreams" and the "imagination". By their very nature, dreams are illogical, irrational, non-sequential, without specific steps and difficult to measure. However, too many of us get limited in our goal setting by the constraints of our own imagination. We would all like to make an extra $100,000 a year but we have no powerful, compelling reason ‘WHY'. What exactly would you do with another $100,000? That is the critical question to ask yourself …   Connect with ‘what' or ‘why' and the ‘how' will make itself known to you in the most miraculous ways.   Even so, $100,000 is not a huge stretch in today's terms. But most never dare to aspire to double or triple their income. Why is that? The missing element is the realm of dreams and imagination. By its very nature, a dream is something that is potentially unrealistic. However, dreams are incredibly powerful and compelling because they are about who you are becoming, not who you are now. Dreams and imagination lie within the domain of the subconscious mind. By incorporating this additional element into the goal setting process, we connect to the infinite resourcefulness of the subconscious and ignite a passion that will inspire and drive us towards our goals. Financial Foreplay® Highlights: Define your Goals: 1.When setting goals it is very important to remember that your goals must be consistent with your values. 2. A goal can not contradict any of your other goals. For example, you can't buy a $750,000 house if your income goal is only $50,000 per year. This is called non-integrated thinking and will sabotage all of the hard work you put into your goals. Non-integrated thinking can also hamper your everyday thoughts as well. It pays dividends to continually strive to eliminate contradictory ideas from your thinking. 3. Develop goals in the 6 areas of life:                      Family and Home                    Financial and Career                    Spiritual and Ethical                    Physical and Health                    Social and Cultural                    Mental and Educational   Setting goals in each area of life will ensure a more balanced life as you begin to examine and change the fundamentals of everyday living. Setting goals in each area of live also helps in eliminating the non-integrated thinking we talked about in the 2nd step. 4. Write your goal in the positive instead of the negative. Work for what you want, not for what you want to leave behind. Part of the reason why we write down and examine our goals is to create a set of instructions for our subconscious mind to carry out. Your subconscious mind is a very efficient tool, it cannot determine right from wrong and it does not judge. It's only function is to carry out its instructions. The more positive instructions you give it, the more positive results you will get.  Thinking positively in everyday life will also help in your growth as a human being. Don't limit it to goal setting.   5. Write your goal out in great detail. You must give the subconscious mind a detailed set of instructions to work on. The more information you give it, the more clear the final outcome becomes. The more precise the outcome, the more efficient the subconscious mind can become.   6. By all means, make sure your goal is high enough.   7. This is the most important, writing down your goals creates the roadmap to your success. Although just the act of writing them down can set the process in motion, it is also extremely important to review your goals frequently. Remember, the more focused you are on your goals the more likely you are to accomplish them. Sometimes we realise we have to revise a goal as circumstances and other goals change. If you need to change a goal do not consider it a failure, consider it a victory as you had the insight to realise something needed adjustment.  MY RESULT Goal Setting Formula   Whilst you need the capacity to dream you also need to be able to move that vision from the ethereal to the material and that is where MY RESULT goal setting methodology comes in:   M          Measurable result. How will you know when you get there? What does the end step look like? Y            Why? For what purpose/intention do you want it? Do not be afraid to dream BIG here!   R            Realistic and achievable. Don't be afraid to set a longer-term goal that is a stretch or a challenge. E            Ecological – is it good for you, others and the planet? S            Specific, clear and concise goals – ensure you subconscious mind knows what it is working towards. U           You have it now. The goal must be written in the present, as if you have it now and signed by you. L             Looking toward your goal - not moving away from what you do not want. Action-oriented. T            Time bound - must have a specific achievement date.

SMART which can be defined as S-Specific which means that your goals need to be direct, detailed, and meaningful like real numbers with real deadlines. For e.g. if you say you want to be successful it is not a goal wherein if you say you want to double your business by march,2021 then it is a specific goal. M-Measurable which means that your goal should be quantifiable so that the progress or success can be tracked. As in the case of above e.g. the number which is doubling the business is very much trackable whereas being successful is not. A-Achievable which means that your goal should be challenging but there should be a possibility to achieve it. You should have the tools and resources to achieve the goal. For e.g. if you want to double your business you should have adequate machinery or manpower to achieve your target. R-Relevant which means it should be sensible enough as per the industry. You should know what you and your team are capable of. For e.g. if you are part of the website designing industry your team should have designers. C – Compatible or Challenging  Over the years, I have found it to be extremely helpful to use a system like SMAC to help me sort, identify, and articulate what I want to accomplish. I hope you find tools like SMAC helpful for your future planning too!  Action and accountability  While it does take some serious willpower and determination to start dreaming of a new future - only action and accountability will get you to the finish line. Don’t make the common mistake of just setting really good goals and walking away - you’ve got to put your plans into action!  I recommend breaking down your goals into manageable steps - don’t bite off more than you can chew! Some have even found quarterly goals to be more helpful as they are short-term and help you achieve your long-term objectives.  After you’ve figured out your plan of attack, rope in a friend to help hold you to it. Hello again and welcome to the next episode of Level Up, the podcast that focuses on leadership, self improvement and continued growth throughout our everyday lives.  I'm Jose, your host and I am joined by my co-host, and the CEO of All-American Lumping LLC, one of the fastest growing national 3PL Logistics and Freight Handling companies in the U.S., Crystal Garcia. Last week we discussed "Defining Success"…how we define success for ourselves.  What that looks like for us as individuals and we also touched on failure and what that looks like as well.  You can't have one without the other, right? Today we are going show you how you can be a "Goal Digger".  Not a Gold Digger.  But a GOAL DIGGER  So first thing's first, what the hell is a GOAL Digger? Read Excerpt: Neffi, a blogger posted in the Buzz Blog that… A “GOAL digger” …is someone who is ambitious and clear of the things they want. Goal diggers have dreams, goals and aspirations for independence, success, and their version of happiness. They “dig in” and do the work to become the person they strive to be. Being a “GOAL digger” is all mindset. It's the basic of setting goals for your life and doing what it takes to achieve them. Whether they are goals set in your education, your career, your personal life, or some other area. You are setting goals for whatever it is you desire that will define success to you. Tackling obstacles and burdens that may get in your way, being determined, persevering, sometimes a little suffering with blood, sweat, and tears. A GOAL digger never stops working towards their goals. What have you done to get better today? Q: What do you think about Neffi's definition of a Goal Digger? Goals provide you with direction, purpose and motivation.  They are the destination in the your mental GPS that allows to see where you want to go in life or business.  Without goals, you're just aimlessly moving through life, business is just one sale after another without any true purpose.  This can be frustrating if you are trying to achieve something specific. This typically ends in frustration, disappointment and in severe cases, depression. Q: How did you overcome that obstacle and how were you able to double your earning potential in just a few months?   Q: Have you ever tried to achieve something without having a specific goal in mind?  What happened and how did that play out?  One of the three critical criteria for being a Goal Digger, is that a Goal Digger sets VERY, VERY SPECIFIC goals.  The more specific the better.  A vague or wishy-washy goal is nothing more than a desire.  A lot of people have heard about SMART goals, SMART being: S-Specific, M-Measurable, A-Attainable, R-Relevant, T-Timebound Another way to look at it is through the PURE format which is: P-Positive, U-Under your control, R-Right sized, E-Ecological Q: How do you set goals to achieve what you want to achieve in your personal life?  Professionally?  In business? Example of weak goals (Desire)  I wanna new car  I wanna bigger house I want a better job I want to lose weight Example of strong goals  I want a 6-Series Covnertibel BMW M3 I want a 4 BR home in Manteca with a pool and it must be close to a good school I want a position as an Operations Manager for Walmart making $95K a year with good bennies I want to lose 30 pounds of fat and gain 10 pounds of muscle, dropping my waistline from a 42 to 32  When goals are not quantifiable how can you assign value? I want to be happy as I was when I was in college Q: Have you ever set a goal without a timeline?  Did you achieve that goal?  Have you ever over achieved a goal that you set that was too low?  What did you learn from the process?Example of poor timelines  One of these days  Eventually Next year Putting your goals in writing is a great way to commit to yourself what you intend to accomplish.  People who write down their goals are almost 42% more likely to achieve their goals. Q: Do you commit your goals to writing?  What does that look like?  How often are they revisited?  Do you only do this for business or also personally?  How has this impacted your success? Journaling Balanced Scorecard Strategic Objectives  Q: Have you failed to achieve a goal you set?  Why did you fail and what did you learn from that failure?   Read Quote:  Darren Hardy says, "If you are not making the progress that you would like to make and are capable of making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly defined"  Q:  Either of you set goals got 2021 yet?  What will that look like? As we bring the infamous 2020 year to a close in just a matter of weeks, many of you will begin setting the same old new years resolutions you always set.  You know, Lose weight, save money, travel more, etc.  We've all done it. This year, I challenge you to do a few things differently.  Take out your pen and paper or write this down in a note app: Set a simple theme for the year.  This year our theme is Health and Wealth.  Last year it was "Show up and Be Present" in honor of one of Crystal's very close friend that passed.  (Crystal can add) Your theme can be what ever 1 or 2 things are most important for you that you plan on focusing on.  Use this theme to align your decisions throughout the year.  Regularly discuss your theme with you power circle and hold each other accountable when you are not acting in alignment of that theme.Set SMART and specific goals that align with your WHY and your values.  For example, my WHY is family.  My value is also family, one of my goals for 2021 is going to be to visit my son in Texas in February of this year.  I am also going to take go on a family vacation to Costa Rica in July of this year, if COVID allows.  Write your theme and your goals for this year down.  If you are able too, I recommend purchasing the "Living Your Best Year Ever" journal, designed by Darren hardy.  You can purchase it on Amazon for about $35, the link is provided below.  It will definitely help you fine tune your goal setting process and allow you to become a better GOAL DIGGER.  But just writing it down on paper in notebook or on a note app like OneNote, or even sending yourself an email with your goals outlined, you will have a greater chance of accomplishing that goal.  This year, set the right goals and make sure the goals are right for you. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

When setting your 2017 goals, or any other goals for that matter, it helps if you use a method that increases your chances of achieving your goals! What goals were met, and what fell short with area for improvement. We look at what existing and new goals we are setting for 2021, and ways that we can stay accountable to meet them. We review keys to making and achieving goals by setting S.M.A.R.T. criteria. S - Specific. Make goals less vague. Rather than "I'm going to lose weight." try "I'm going to lose five pounds. M - Measurable. With something we can measure we can track progress. By stating 5lbs as our goal we can measure how much we've lost and how much we have left to lose. A - Attainable. By keeping the goal something that is realistic and attainable we have something we can actually reachable. Rather than arbitrarily stating I'm going to loose 30lbs would cause possible health issues, make it very difficult or even impossible to reach based on my height, weight and BMI. R - Relavant. Goals need to make sense to me, and be relevant to me and my life. I'd like to lose some of the weight brought on by the pandemic, and being at home snacking all the time. I'd like my Medium-Sized shirts to fit more comfortably. This is totally relevant to me. It makes sense. T - Time Sensitive. If we can have specific, and measurable goals, we need a way to keep motivated, and review progress. By keeping a goal time-bound, we don't keep extending the goal and become a contestant Someday Isle. Ya know, I'll get that someday? "Someday I'll lose the weight." Get voted off the Island, and set a timeframe for the goal, and perhaps periodic milestones along they way. Today I want to talk a bit about the importance of building your own platform online, and a method I used to kill the procrastination that many people suffer from.    When Jerry Seinfeld was an up-and-coming comedian, he made a commitment to write one joke a day. Just one funny line, nothing huge.    He had a big calendar of the whole year on a wall in his apartment. Every time he wrote a joke, he put a red X on that date.   Before long he had a growing chain of red X's on the calendar — a visual reminder of the consistent work he put in.   What kept him motivated each day was the fear of breaking the chain. DON'T BREAK THE CHAIN.    I had a new year's resolution of creating 2 podcasts a week for the whole year in 2020, and we are nearly half way through the year and I'm up to Episode 47 now.    What inspired me was when I heard Steven Larsen saying he hated the idea of publishing initially, but once he finally committed to it it changed his life.    It might sound old school but the key to finally making it happen was creating a SMART goal.   S = Specific   M = Measurable   A = Achievable   R = Relevant   T = Time-based

With just days before the new year, your host, Dan Neumann, figured it’d be the perfect time to discuss New Year’s resolutions! Many people set New Year’s resolutions, but the problem is: they don’t keep them. Some research even says that only 8% of people actually achieve the goal they’ve set out for. Many of these goals don’t even reach a two-week shelf life before many people give up.   But why is this? In today’s podcast, Dan Neumann sets out to find the answer! He takes a look at what’s inherently flawed about this concept of New Year’s resolutions, gives his insights on how you can make your New Year’s resolution more likely to stick, and even shares some of the goals and resolutions related to the podcast itself!   Key Takeaways What is inherently flawed about the concept of New Year’s resolutions? Setting your goals now for a successful year ahead has the following advantages: It lets you design your life so that you manifest what you want. It gives you a direction with regard to what steps you want to take in 2020. It aligns your thinking with what truly matters to you in your life It gives you a head start as it helps you programme your mind for success ahead of time. The simplest and easiest way to set your goals for a successful year is to create S.M.A.R.T goals. SMART goals are: S - Short and specific M - Measurable (you must have landmarks or clues which educate you on how you are doing whether you are on or off course) A - Achievable R - Results oriented T - Timely There are three types of goals that you can set: Minimum goal: “I will run 5K by the 31st of May, 2020.” Target goal: “I will run 10K by the 31st of May 2020.” Outrageous goal: “I will run 42K by the 31st of May 2020.” An outrageous goal would be something that would blow your mind if you achieved it. Something that feels like : “Well I could never do that.” In addition, it is important to create a breakthrough goal to instantly up level your life and career. Smaller goals help you advance little by little toward the achievement of your breakthrough goal. An example could be: a profound career move or a major personal improvement. A breakthrough goal permanently changes your life and permanently changes who you are as an individual. Before you set your SMART goals, I invite you to do a Life Review Assessment so that you can take the committed decision to change a particular area of your life based on the results you get in the life review assessment and what matters to you the most right now. The Life Review Assessment will help you: Evaluate where you are in your life right now and how you are performing in the major areas of your life. Assess your satisfaction with your current life. Identify what aspect of your life is a little bit off. How is it that we can be so good at setting and achieving our goals in every area of our life, but yet, continue to struggle over and over again when it comes to our health related goals? If you’re like most people, you’re successful at every area of your life except lingering health related issues. Maybe it’s an unhealthy weight, diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol, fatigue, mismanaged stress, or a lack of sleep. It’s something that lingers every year. How can this be? How is it that a successful person like yourself, who has a thriving business, family, and interpersonal life struggle with something as trivial as weight or sleep? THE ANSWER LIES IN GOAL SETTING. The truth is, that you already know everything there is to know about goal setting — that’s how you’ve become so successful in the first place. By applying these same principles to your health, you can have the healthiest year ever in 2018. Have you ever thought about what determines whether something happens or doesn’t happen in your life? The truth is, we never make time in our lives for things that are “shoulds”… WE ONLY HAVE TIME IN OUR LIFE FOR THINGS THAT ARE “MUSTS”. For example, you may think “I should be a better parent…a better father…. a better husband”. Shoulds never make it in our day to day activities. Only musts do. The things that you do every day are the things that you’ve made a must. My guess is there are things in your life right now that you want to change, but you’ve allowed yourself to tolerate them for way too long. You have the power to both create things that add to your life, and to take out the things that take away from your best life. ONLY SMART GOALS DONE. Each letter in the acronym SMART has a specific and powerful purpose. S: Specific. Clarity is power. Our brains are designed to crave simplicity and clarity. Complexity is the enemy of execution. The most important variable in goal setting is having a specific desired outcome already identified. M: Measurable. You can manage what you don’t measure. It’s very important to have specific milestone and measurements that you are tracking to measure your success. A: Achievable. If your goal is achievable, you will gain momentum. Momentum is one of the most important variables in goal achieving and breakthrough. R: Realistic. Achievable goals are important, but you also want them to be realistic so that you can capture quick wins. T: Timed. A goal without a timeframe is just an idea, a thought, or a wish. If goals don’t have timelines, they just don’t get done. We all need accountability, and setting a specific time limit to your goals can determine whether you achieve them or not. AND IT STARTS WITH POWERFUL DECISION MAKING. In order to move the needle in a massive way this year towards the healthiest version of yourself, you must master the steps to powerful decision making. First, know your target. Your target is your desired outcome. Get as specific as possible with what you want. Clarity is power – get crystal clear on your priorities. Second, know your why. Knowing your why provides you with purpose, and purpose gives you the drive to complete your goal. This is very, very critical. What do you value? What is the culture of your family? By clearly defining your values and setting goals based on those values, you will be able to align your life and achieve the things you want most.  This episode clearly outlines the way I set goals for myself and my family to reach our dreams.  You can too! Play In A New Window Download             Show Summary I grew up in a goal oriented family.  When I was young, my mom worked part time for Franklin Day Planners.  My parents were also big fans of Stephen Covey.  Franklin merged with Covey, and then it was Franklin Covey that my mom worked for.  I think i got my first Franklin Day Planner when I was about 10.   My parents taught me about how the Franklin Covey day planner worked.  You first determined what your values were, then you set long term goals based around those values.  You broke the long term goals down in to short term goals, and the short term goals got broken down into daily tasks.  Each built upon each other to help you reach those long term goals that coincided with what you personally value. My dad is also famous (well famous in our little world) for a talk he gives on The Wheel of Balance.  He talks about a wheel made up of 6 different areas Mental Social Physical Spiritual Family Work He talks about how each of these areas need balance in our lives.  If one of them is missing or one is inflated more that the rest, the wheel won’t turn smoothly.  We get stuck.  So as a youth, I set my values and long term goals based around these 6 areas.  And I still do today. Because of these goals, I was able to achieve just about anything I set my mind to as a teenager. For example - I value my testimony of Jesus Christ and His Gospel.  Some of my long-term goals I set when I was a youth was to Be worthy to enter the temple (for either marriage or before a mission) To be married in the temple Read cover to cover and gain a testimony of all 4 sets of scripture (Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon, and Doctrine & Covenants) Get my Young Women Medallion Graduate from Seminary Then I would break those down into short term goals. So I would make a goal to read The Book of Mormon by a certain date Then my daily task was to read so many chapters each day. Those things fulfilled my “Spiritual” spoke on the wheel.  Other goals that I had that went along with my values were Maintain a certain GPA Go to Brigham Young University Participate in Swim Team Sing in the Choir Save X amount for college etc. Now that I am adult, my goals are a little bit different than they were when I was teenager, but my values are still pretty much the same. I wanted to pass on this same goal oriented life to my children, so In January we did a great family home evening where we set our Family Values and then set some goals in each area that we wanted to work on.   First we brainstormed a lot of different ideas, and then we voted and narrowed it down to 7 things. We are service oriented We are respectful We are optimistic We are learners We are self-reliant We are adventurous We are Christ-centered Under each of these 7 categories we listed a few things that we want to work on as a family. Some of these things I think we already do well, (like grow a garden, and going to church each week) and some things are things we agreed we need to work on (like being willing to try new foods and take shorter showers).   I made a 24x36 poster on my computer and had it printed at my local UPS store for about $4 and we hang it on the door between our kitchen and garage so that it is a constant reminder. (see below) This is a great exercise to do with your kids and figure what your family values and what goals you have and to figure out the culture of your family.   A few weeks ago on the 3in30 podcast, Host Rachel Nielsen interviewed  Chamaine Wollenzien of Wandering Families for Episode 40.  Chamaine said that the culture of her family is “We are a hiking family.”  Rachel posed the question “What is your family culture” out to her audience on social media  with a great response.  People responded “We are a reading family”  “We are a snuggling family”  “We are movie watching family” When I have thought about that question, I have really struggled with it.  Because we are a blended family, I feel like I have one culture when its just me and my kids and I have a different culture when I’m with my husband and his kids.  And when we are all together…I wasn’t really sure. But then I was able to look back at this exercise we did as a family and I can say that the thing that really brings us together is that “We are a Christ-Centered Family” and that really brought me a lot of peace. So now that it’s Back To School time again, now is a GREAT time to sit down by yourself or with your family and set some Values, Long Term Goals, Short Terms Goals, and maybe even break it down into daily tasks.  And Remember, Goals need to be S.M.A.R.T. SMART is a great acronym for setting goals S - Specific M - Measurable A - Attainable R - Realistic T - Time Bound S - Specific, set goals that are specific.  What is the outcome that you want?  Does it reflect your values? What do you hope to achieve by setting this goal? M - Measurable - how can you break it down.  Can you evaluate the progress you are making? A - Attainable, now this goes back to Podcast 15 and Redefining Success.  You need to make goals that you actually have control over.   R - Realistic - if you make a goal to be able fly of your own accord, it’s probably not very realistic, so make sure they are goals that you can realistically achieve T - Time Bound - set a time limit.  Set an end.   Now, I think it is a GREAT idea to not only set some goals that are attainable, but some some goals that REALLY stretch you.   That push your limits.  Maybe that’s a goal to increase your families income by a LOT, or to lose a lot of weight.  Something that is going to be tough. But also remember that you don’t need to be perfect at this.  And even if your time is up on your goal and you didn’t get all the way there, look back at the PROGRESS you’ve made and how much you were able to achieve by setting the goal, even if you didn’t make it all the way. As human beings we were not meant to stay stagnant.  We are meant to constantly be growing and learning.  When we get stagnant in our lives, we feel uncomfortable.  And while growth, from setting goals, can also be uncomfortable, that uncomfortability is worth it. Sometimes, we are afraid to set goals and to stretch ourselves out of fear of failure.  But don’t we automatically fail by not trying? We will discuss failure more in depth on another episode, but for now I just want you to understand that it’s ok to fail if you are trying.  You can just take that as evidence that what you tried didn’t work and you need to approach it another way.  You don’t need to make it mean anything more than that.  Make it mean something positive.  Don’t make it mean something negative about you.  But not trying it all is automatically failing and not quite achieving everything you wanted means you at least got part of the way there, and you learned and grew in the process and you just have more work to do. Rachel Hollis has a great practice in that she writes down 10 big goals in a notebook like she has already achieved them.  She writes them down (the same 10 big goals) every single day until she achieves them.  And she says that by writing them down every single day like they are already done, and putting those great vibes out into the universe, they ALWAYS come true.  By focusing on them every single day she is constantly working on them in subtle ways and her goals are always achieved. Right now my friend Monica Packer from the podcast About Progress is running a 30-day wake up challenge.  Her goal is to wake up by 6:30 every day so that she can be more productive in the day.  She’s broken down that down to what she needs to do at night in order to wake up earlier in the morning, and then what she needs to do in the morning, to make things a little bit easier.  She realizes that she may not be perfect at this, but like her podcast says, its not about perfection, it’s about progress! Setting Goals is the Key to Success 2nd of 5 At the root of all success is a vision and intention. We must learn to set achievable goals. I lead teams. I lead meetings. I teach leaders to lead. I can see the end result, because I have defined it clearly. I set a goal to be in shape. I have expressed the goal in terms of running a certain distance in a certain amount of time. I can't accomplish that goal without the following: The belief that I will succeed... A description of what it looks like when I have succeeded... A long-term vision... Short-term goals... A weekly schedule... A daily plan of action... That works for my work, as well as for my running. What about your work? What about your life? Goals are SMART! In this last ATTACK episode of 2016 In this last ATTACK episode of 2016 we discuss our Goals for 2017 and the SMART Way to set our goals. SMART is an acronym. When setting your 2017 goals, or any other goals for that matter, it helps if you use a method that increases your chances of achieving your goals! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Goals the SMART Way: S – Specific. Your goal needs to be specific enough so you know if you are on track in achieving it. M – Measurable. If your goal is not measurable, you will have no idea if you are working towards achieving it, and you won’t know when or if you get there! A – Achievable. Your goal needs to be achievable. The goal of going to the moon although is a really lofty goal, it is not very achievable. At least not for most of us in 2017 R – Reasonable. Your goal needs to be reasonable. Perhaps you really want to learn how to read someone’s mind, this is a skill we all wished we had, but as far as goals go? not very reasonable. T – Time-Bound. Your goal needs to have a time limit, a month, week, quarter, end of year, whatever it is.
