Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
We give Erik Killmonger a second chance at returning to Wakanda. What if he had been able to set aside his rage and took in a Wakanda sunset before his royal takeover?
Bat Therapy: Psychology of Batman and other Comic Superheroes
We explore the powerful film representation of Erik Killmonger, Wakandan royalty raised on the streets of Oakland. The stark contrast between their childhoods brings into question whether T'Challa can truly understand Erik and why Erik would naturally continue to choose violence as the solution to the world's problems.
I love watching a good adventure movie, especially at the start of summer. I have some great memories of eating popcorn in the local suburban movie theatre while we watched aliens take over a spaceship and a group of kids hunt for long-lost treasure in an underground cave.At the same time, even as a kid, I remember thinking how awful some of the racial and gender stereotypes were. I specifically remember watching Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and cringing at the representations onscreen, especially, the ruthless and flat-dimensioned South Asian characters and the ridiculous idea that Indians ate monkey brains – not to mention little Short Round, Indy's child guide and sidekick played by the young Ke Huy Quan. With the series, filmmakers George Lucas and Steven Spielberg showcased nostalgia for the early mid-century with Indiana Jones, the humanitarian Hunter College professor turned adventurer at the centre. Indy outran all kinds of harrows to ensure the ancient artifacts he chased ended up where he thought they belonged: "in a museum." (Another now famous line is from _Black Panther_ when Erik Killmonger asks a museum curator: "How do you think your ancestor's got these?")Guilty pleasure or irredeemable Orientalism? The final Indiana Jones movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is coming out tomorrow, 42 years after the first movie was released. As the series comes to an end, we explore Indy's complicated legacy — and his famous line: "it belongs in a museum." Will the Indiana Jones franchise reflect the changes in anthropology departments and the growing movements from Indigenous and Global South communities to return stolen objects and ancestors from western museums? Will it consider that Eurocentric notions of what holds heritage has finally expanded beyond the artifact? Will this new movie be full of highly problematic stories? Or a guilty pleasure? Or, can it be both? Historian Christopher Heaney has spent a lot of time thinking about this. He's written a book about the "original" Indiana Jones and wrote "Burying Indiana Jones" for the New Yorker. He's a professor of Latin American History at Penn State University and he joined me on Don't Call Me Resilient — our last episode of the season, and just in time for summer blockbuster season — to unpack everything Indiana Jones.
Original Air Date: February 13th, 2019Award-winning actor and producer Michael B. Jordan discusses his skyrocketing career and why he says his life has already "exceeded his dreams.” Michael's breakout performance came in 2013's “Fruitvale Station,” directed by visionary Ryan Coogler. The duo teamed up again for the “Rocky” sequel, “Creed,” and then for the mega-blockbuster “Black Panther,” which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Michael says after playing superhero villain Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther,” he went to therapy. “As a man, I think we get a lot of slack for … what it is to be masculine,” he says. “I don't really subscribe to that because I feel like everybody needs to unpack and talk, whether it's with a therapist or a close friend or family member.” Want more podcasts from OWN? In this episode on the Marvel movie Black Panther, Clio quotes Virgil and Bourdieu. Mireille only stops talking about incest long enough to explain the Omegaverse. I think we can all agree that at least one of them deserves to be thrown off a waterfall. But WHICH ONE? And can they set aside their enmity long enough to record a podcast episode? For Wakanda? Without question. We return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first of two Black Panther films starting with Ryan Coogler's 2018 superhero epic. The late Chadwick Boseman stars as the titular hero and king of the fictional African nation who must ascend to the throne after the death of his father in Captain America: Civil War (2016). Among those looking to challenge his reign is the dynamic villain Erik Killmonger played by Michael B. Jordan. Join us as we fangirl over the work of Ryan Coogler and revisit this cultural touchstone that also has the great distinction of being the first and only Marvel film to score a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is breaking records left and right across the world (hello, biggest November opening ever) so we went back to 2018's Black Panther to sing its praises and honour its legacy. And because we couldn't get enough of Michael B. Tony...Tony...Tony! What are we going to do with you? The question is answered in the sixth episode of the Marvel's What If...? series, as we see the domino effect of what happens if Erik Killmonger had saved Tony Stark from being kidnapped. Without the lessons learned after being kidnapped in Iron Man, Tony remains the arrogant, narcissistic, playboy billionaire still trying to live up to and surpass the legacy left behind by his father. Having saved Tony in the desert, and subsequently outing Obadiah Stane as the mastermind behind Tony's kidnapping, Killmonger secures his place as Tony's Head of Security and right hand man - to the dismay and distrust of Happy and Pepper. Promising at first, the results of this partnership has long-reaching consequences for all involved. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/fandomhybridpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/fandomhybridpodcast/support

Erik Killmonger proves himself a master manipulator with charisma, strategy, and mechanical engineering skills that impress almost everyone in his wake - proving once again his prowess as a villain. We're finally up to “Black Panther,” one of our complete favorites and a movie we'd been looking forward to revisiting since the beginning, on this week's episode of Marvel Mondays. Christy and Nicolas talk about how sad it is to watch Ryan Coogler's film following the death of Chadwick Boseman, how it features a villain in Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger who has an understandable reason for his actions, the philosophical debate about whether to protect the Vibranium and keep Wakanda peaceful and isolated or share it for the greater good and risk entering the world's skirmishes, and what an emotional experience it was for Black moviegoers to see themselves on screen in this heroic capacity. We love this movie so much for so many reasons, so it was a joy to have a lengthy conversation about it. We'd love to hear your thoughts, too, and thanks as always for listening to our Breakfast All Day miniseries.

HELLO EVERYONE and welcome back to another episode. As you can see from the title of this episode we decided to steer away from what we are familiar with, and talk about some new series you all might not have heard of recently. Before that though as always we had some news to talk about. In lightning round we heard the announcement of a Spy Kids reimagining with Robert Rodriguez writing and directing, and Proximity Media signing a 5 year contract with Disney. This also included the news of Michael B. Jordan being willing to reprise his role as Erik Killmonger. Besides this we had other news, but you’ll have to listen to the episode to hear exactly what happened. Now for the actual topic. As you all may know there are more comic books out there than those by DC and Marvel. This episode is meant to highlight those and gush about the ones we especially love. Whether it's characters from more traditional comics or even foreign comics, there are a lot of great stories and characters out there. Hopefully you guys find something new from this episode and try it! And as always, if you have a comic that isn’t from DC or Marvel that you like we didn’t mention make sure to tell us! If you enjoyed this episode and want to continue to support us, you can leave a review on iTunes or recommend it to a fellow nerdy friend. You can also follow the show @nerdsbelikepod on Instagram, Twitter & Facebook. And if you have a topic you want us to cover, you can email us at nerdsbelikepod@gmail.com. Thanks for listening. Who shall win the crown as the supreme Marvel villain? Wrapping up Phase Three, we shower our appreciation on Erik Killmonger, draw surprising conclusions about the MCU’s biggest baddie Thanos, and decide who shall reign alongside Malekith over a kingdom of mediocre darkness. Includes references to Voldemort and Caroline’s ongoing hate affair with Tony Stark. Let’s end our series with a bang - or an evil cackle, if that’s your preference! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nerd-alert-girls/message

In preparation for the Black Panther movie, we take a look at the beginning of Christopher Priest's 1998 influential run on Black Panther, Issues 1-17. Affiliate link included. Transcript follows:T'Challa fights evil in Wakanda, in the air and in Hell's Kitchen, while his State Department liaison tries to avoid getting hit by Bill Clinton with a hockey stick. I'll tell youall about it as we take a look at the beginning of Christopher Priest's run on Black Panther ahead in the Classy Comics Podcast.Welcome to the Classy Comics Podcast where we search for the best comics in the universe. From Boise, Idaho here is your host, Adam Graham.T'Challa, the Black Panther, was the first black superhero. He was introduced in the pages of Fantastic Four by Stanley and Jack Kirby back in 1966. He begins by kidnapping the Fantastic Four. Good heroic opening if I've ever heard of it, but it's only to test them to see if they would be able to help him with the problems he's going through in his nation of Wakanda. He later makes a big appearance with Captain America, which leads to him joining the Avengers and becoming a long-term character later as he would appear repeatedly as a member of the team and as a guest star in other books. His own series would be a bit more challenging, that would definitely have some highlights. His first solo series wasn't in his own book but in the series Jungle Action, and with the story Panthers Quest by Jack McGregor. The series saw him trying to stay alive against Erik Killmonger, a Wakandan expatriate who returned hoping to claim the throne and the power of Wakanda for his own. The story had striking art. It also had some very dark moments as well as a certain reflectiveness. Many consider it Marvel's first graphic novel, this multiple part story told over two years. After the cancellation of Jungle Action, Black Panther got his own series written by Jack Kirby who also did the art. This was a lot more adventure/fun/Sci-Fi than the Jungle Action, and it also get a mini-series as well as a few more scripts by McGregor who would create some sequels to his original story in the '70s. He continued to be a pretty low profile character until the 1990s, and perhaps the best thing to happen to Black Panther was Marvel going bankrupt.
