Hear about a German road trip to 9 UNESCO Cities as the Amateur Traveler talks to Renee Hannes from dreamplanexperience.com about her exploration of the land of her ancestors. https://amateurtraveler.com/germany-road-trip-to-9-unesco-cities/ Renee says, "I just returned from living in Berlin for 3 months. So had an opportunity to make a little bit of a longer trip and was there with my husband and dog and lived in Berlin and I had a good chance to be able to see the city and lots of other places around it. I had this long list of places on my to-do list. I think like most travelers, I become very quickly overwhelmed with how many places I wanted to see. So I thought why not think about what are those places that are worthy of a visit?" "That's where I came upon thinking about it from a UNESCO perspective and UNESCO sites are always worthy places to visit special places to visit in terms of the history and the moments in history that they help create and shape the architecture that usually is pretty spectacular to be able to see from, nature and the landscapes that we want to protect and then also it gives us really good insights into the culture. So after I had that long list, I went back and thought, what is close to Berlin? And that's how I was able to stumble on these 9 destinations." In this episode, FAQ is: What are the advantages and disadvantages of Venmo? Today's Destination is: Chennai Today's Misstep- Stolen sneakers in Acalpulco Travel Advice: Carry socks on the plane FAQ: What are the advantages and disadvantages of Venmo? Venmo, like any financial service, has both positive and negative aspects. The perception of whether Venmo is considered good or bad can vary based on individual preferences, needs, and experiences. Here are some factors to consider: On my trip, I had the opportunity to use Venmo in Turkey to pay for a hostel that did not accept credit cards. It worked smoothly. I've been using the app for several years, and here are the good and the not so good—first, the advantages. Convenience: Venmo is known for its ease of use, allowing users to send or receive money quickly through a mobile app. It has become famous for splitting bills, sharing expenses, and making small transactions among friends and family. Social Integration: Venmo incorporates a social feed that allows users to see and comment on their friends' transactions. This social aspect can make money transfers more engaging and interactive. Wide Acceptance: Many online and offline merchants accept Venmo as a payment method. This widespread acceptance can be convenient for users who want to make purchases or payments through the app. Security Features: Venmo has implemented security features, such as two-factor authentication and encryption, to help protect users' financial information. Free for Standard Transactions: Venmo generally doesn't charge fees for standard transactions when using a linked bank account or debit card. Disadvantages of Venmo: Privacy Concerns: The social feed feature on Venmo can lead to privacy concerns, as transactions are often visible to others by default. While you can adjust privacy settings, users should be cautious about sharing sensitive information. Fees for Certain Transactions: While standard transactions are usually free, Venmo charges fees for particular transactions, such as using a credit card or transferring funds to a linked bank account instantly. Limited Customer Support: Some users have reported challenges with Venmo's customer support, experiencing delays or difficulties in resolving issues. Not Ideal for Large Transactions: Venmo is designed for small, peer-to-peer transactions. Due to potential limitations and security concerns, it may not be the best option for large or business-related transactions. Risk of Scams: As with any digital payment platform, there is a risk of scams or fraudulent activities. Users should be vigilant and follow best practices to avoid scams. Whether Venmo is considered good or bad depends on individual preferences, needs, and how well the platform aligns with a user's expectations and usage patterns. Today's destination: Chennai, India My first visit to India was to Chennai, formerly Madras, which was my first city in the southeast part of the country. I flew from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Chennai. Air Asia Airlines was my carrier. I came via Kuala Lumpur. My first thought, arriving at midnight, was that I didn't want to get ripped off by the taxi driver. That happened. The driver promised it was him, threw my bag in the trunk, and closed it. I was not stuck. He left the car as soon as the vehicle left the airport. Another driver, shoeless, jumped in to take me to my hotel. This driver had no change. He said I needed to pay him in cash and could not refund or change any bills. Fortunately, my hotel was able to step in and help me. I paid him from my hotel bill, so they added the charges to my account. I had cash, but all 2000 rupee note bills were worth about $25.00 each. No one seemed to be using this denomination anymore. The country has stopped using this currency. I was swindled in Vietnam, too, because they would have known this. https://www.forbes.com/advisor/in/personal-finance/why-has-rbi-withdrawn-2000-rupee-note/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_500-rupee_note What are some other things to do? Explore Fort St. George: Visit Fort St. George, the oldest British-built fortress in India. You'll find the St. Mary's Church and the Fort Museum inside the fort, showcasing the city's colonial history. Shopping at T Nagar: T Nagar is a bustling shopping district where you can find a variety of traditional silk sarees, jewelry, and other handicrafts. It's a good place to experience the vibrant local market scene. Attend a dance Performance: Chennai is famous for its classical dance form, Bharatanatyam. baa·ruh·taa·naa·tee·uhm Check out local schedules for dance performances and enjoy this beautiful art form. Try South Indian Cuisine: Indulge in the delicious South Indian cuisine. Try traditional dishes like dosa, idli, sambar, and coffee at local eateries. I especially liked the dosa, but not the spices on it. I had my peanut butter when I could not eat the chili spices. While exploring Chennai, it's essential to prioritize your safety. Stick to well-lit and populated areas, use reliable transportation options, and be cautious of your surroundings. We're hugely grateful to Revd Paul White of St Mary's church at Rye for enabling this special recording to be made. An aural presence of St Mary's church. Captured through the night of the 3rd of October. This passage of time is as it happened, from midnight to 1am. Experience being in the nave, then perched high in the belfry looking down from the top ledge upon the bells, including the 'quarter boys' that strike the quarters. There's a wonderful old timber beam to rest against, so don't worry about the drop. This sound-scene of St Mary's unfurls over an hour and between two slow alternating perspectives, each lasting about six minutes. It starts in the nave where the congregation gather for services and prayer. Then glides up to the belfry. Due to the extreme intensity of sound in the belfry (the sound of the main bell carries for miles) the sound scene during striking is from the perspective of the nave. On the very last strike, the perspective blends back up into the belfry, letting you witness the singing of the main bell as it fades away. (Note The clapper can be heard knocking slightly against the bell, as it settles back to rest after striking one.) The church's clock marks each second passing with a crisp resonant clunk, as it has done for many centuries. Indeed it is one of the oldest church turret clocks in working order, first installed in 1561-2. The pendulum visible above the nave was added later. (Read more about St Mary's fascinating history.) The belfry is at the top of the church tower, and is a narrow space very much exposed to the elements. The clock's mechanism can be clearly heard from up here, together with the pressure of moving air as it presses through old rafters, and rocks heavy roof panels. To the right the flagpole outside vibrates against its sturdy mooring. The melodious strike of the quarter boys is close and clearly defined from up here inside the belfry. In contrast the nave is a large spacious and sonically reflective space. High ceilings and wide stone floors. It's where the congregation gather for service. From here the main body of the church can be heard, shouldering the weather in soft, hushing reverberances. A peaceful place, for people, time and prayer. Please note that this is NOT a sleep safe episode due to the bell chimes and clock mechanism. It is a rare chance to hear such an ancient space at night with the sound of the clock inside and the wind raging outside.
This week's episode looks at the various entities that haunt the Ancient Ram Inn. We share an introduction to the topic and then one, scary story about a haunted pub.The Ancient Ram Inn has been standing since 1145, after being originally built as a place to house the workers, who were constructing the nearby St. Mary's Church. Gloucestershire, the county where the Ancient Ram Inn is located, seems to be a hotbed for ghostly activity. While the inn itself is known for its hauntings, it's not the only place in the area with supernatural tales to tell. Two other notable locations in Gloucestershire said to be infested with ghosts are the Woodchester Mansion and St. Briavels Castle. Now, you might be wondering if there's any connection between these three haunted spots. Well, it turns out that there might be something more to it.From an archaeological perspective, the Ancient Ram Inn holds a unique position. It's situated right on the crossroad of two key, Ley lines. Ley lines are believed to be straight lines that connect several places of geological and spiritual importance. These lines often pass through sites like prehistoric burial grounds, mystical locations such as stone circles, and even ancient churches and cathedrals.Join Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEStory OneThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again on Thursday.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, originally built on a barge in 1782, is the oldest church in the state. Tom and Noëlle Crowe tell us that despite its small congregation, it has historical significance and ties to international and church politics. The church has faced challenges throughout the years but has persevered and is still standing in Plum Bayou. St. Mary's Church is a symbol of perseverance and houses the grave of a potential saint. This week on RED-C Roundup our host Deacon Mike Beauvais visited with Fr. Timothy Vaverick, Pastor of St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West, Texas. Deacon Mike first spoke with Fr. Timothy about his call to the priesthood during his time in college as a Physics major at Texas State University. The remainder of the interview focused on Fr. Timothy's newest book, As I Have Loved You: Rediscovering Our Salvation in Christ. In his book, Fr. Timothy Vaverek explores the core message of the gospel as salvation in Christ. Why did God become man? What does it mean to be saved? Fr. Timothy offers a biblical and Catholic response to these questions by illuminating the essential themes of the economy of salvation.

Welcome back! Danielle talks about the mysterious and still unknown identity of the Somerton Man. He was found deceased, propped up in front of a wall at Somerton Beach in Adelaide, Australia in 1948. There was no identification found on the body. A note was discovered sewn into his pants pocket which read, "Tamam Shud", Persian for it's finished. So many suspicious details were found that it made investigators believe his death was a homicide, likely a result of being poisoned. His body was exhumed last year to run DNA tests in an attempt to uncover new evidence. In this week's episode Sandra talks about the Ancient Ram Inn. Located in Gloucestershire UK the Ancient Ram Inn was built in 1145. It was first used to house masons, slaves and workers who were constructing the St. Mary's Church located directly across the street. Today it is used as an inn and is home to several spirits. One of them is supposedly a witch who was burned at the stake in the 1500's. You can actually request the room that she supposedly stayed in before being killed. That room is known as the "Witch's Room." -- By Anne Brontë -- Anne Brontë was born January 17, 1820 to Maria Branwell and Patrick Brontë. The youngest member of the Brontë family, Anne and her sisters Charlotte and Emily all achieved great literary success in both novels and poetry during their lifetimes. Anne Brontë is most well known for her novel: Wuthering Heights. The book was her second publication and released in December 1847, the same month as her first novel Agnes Grey. Anne used a number of pseudonyms in publication including Acton Bell and Ellis Bell. Tragically, none of the 6 Brontë children made it past the age of 38. The father Patrick Brontë outlived all his children and died in June 1777. Although their time on Earth was short the children of Patrick Brontë have had an impact on Literature that continues for centuries. Anne Brontë's grave can be visited at the churchyard of St. Mary's Church in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/patrick-fennell6/support
Advent begins this week so we thought we'd bring you a unique perspective on prayer. We're joined by Josemon Abraham, a devotee of Taizé Prayer - a style of meditative prayer developed by an ecumenical community of monks in rural France, which had it's start in the 1940's. Josemon gives us a thorough history of the Taizé community, its distinctive prayer style and how it has become beloved by so many Christians around the world, especially young adults. Our co-host Kari Janisse was exposed to it several years ago and was thoroughly impressed, even our jaded and prayer-deficient co-host Mike Walsh enjoyed it. The prayer time typically includes a few songs, a psalm, a Bible reading, time of silence and intercessions. Short songs (chants), sung repeatedly, give it a meditative character. The words and phrases used in these chants are taken from the Holy Bible or writings of saints. Meditative singing thus becomes a way of listening to God. It allows everyone to take part in a time of prayer together and to remain together in attentive waiting on God. Please check our parish website for more information. If you are interested in the Taize experience, all are welcome to join Josemon as he leads a prayer event at Our Lady of Peace Parish, St. Mary's Church, 32 Carroll Ave., Williamstown, NJ on Tuesday, December 7th from 7-8 PM in the parish's St. Anne's room. The Stained Glass Of St Mary's Church - Portraits Of Christ // Dr Phil Temple by Proclaimers
Audio recordingSermon manuscript:504 years ago today, October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses, or statements, against the Church's sale of indulgences to the door of St. Mary's Church in Wittenberg. Luther making this protest is the reason why October 31st was the date that is chosen to commemorate the Lutheran Reformation of the Catholic Church. But October 31, 1517 was just the beginning of the story. The pope's sale of indulgences was not going to be the main point of contention. Fairly quickly much bigger questions were raised. Who or what is authoritative for Christians? Do Christians need to submit to the pope or to the Scriptures? Who or what determines the doctrines that are taught? What if there are discrepancies and conflicts between the authorities in the church and the Scriptures? We could talk a long time about these questions and issues. But what I'd like to spend our time on today is what became the most important issue during the Reformation. The most important conflict was concerning how a person could be found to be acceptable in God's sight. When God renders his verdict concerning an individual, what will that verdict be? And why? What is the basis for God's verdict concerning the individual? These are the questions behind an important church word that it is good for you to know and understand, which is “justification.” How can a person be justified in God's sight? That is a pretty important and practical thing to know, since our eternal fate is dependent upon it. Before we speak about what Luther and the other reformers rediscovered from the Bible, let's first briefly describe how justification was understood in the Roman Catholic Church. Overall, the most important thing to understand is that according to the Catholic Church if we are to be justified before God it is because of a cooperative effort between God and I. God does his part. I am to do my part. God's part is largely a matter of several different graces or gifts, such as the seven sacraments, and some other less important things. (Included, by the way, among these less important things would be indulgences, which Luther posted the 95 theses about.) God gave these graces to Peter and the other apostles. Therefore, through the ministers of the church, God dispenses his grace to those who wish to receive it. This is God doing his part, and you can count on God doing his part. But, according to Roman Catholic teaching, I also have to do my part. What is my part? First and foremost, I must receive these graces that are given out by the clergy. Then I must live a good life, keeping God's and the church's commandments. Whereas God can be counted on for doing his part, the Christian is not so trustworthy. Even the Catholics recognize that. But there is a remedy for that. The Christian can go to confession with the priest. He can buy indulgences. If the Christian sins a lot, then (even if all else fails) he can still work off his guilt in purgatory after he has died. Purgatory is not taught by the Bible, but eventually it came to be understood as a place where imperfect Christians who have died can go to get cleaned up through suffering, through being purged of the guilt that has been accumulated. Eventually the Christian will have done his part and will be holy enough to become a saint and can enter heaven. There is a lot more that we could say about the Roman Catholic Church's teachings about being justified before God. Great big books have been written about this. Let it be said that the Roman Catholic Church's teaching is not wild and nonsensical. It is not something that can just be written off as stupid. There is a good deal of truth in Roman Catholicism, particularly with what they say about God doing his part. Indeed, the whole overall arrangement makes a lot of sense to our natural way of thinking. There are so many things in life where the one party does his part, and the other party does their part. It seems reasonable that a person's relationship with God should be that way too. But, as we heard in our reading from Isaiah 55 a couple weeks ago, God says: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are my ways your ways.” What is often reasonable and helpful in our daily, earthly life can be a roadblock if we transfer that thinking over to the kingdom of God. God doing his part, and we doing our part, sounds reasonable, but that's just not how it works. From long and bitter experience Luther learned how unreliable our reason is when it comes to the things of God. He tried his hardest to do his part. One of his problems, some Roman Catholics have said, was that he was too honest about his efforts. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't achieve what the church taught him he should be able to achieve. This made him very concerned about how he might be judged by God. How would God render his verdict concerning Martin Luther? Wanting to know God's will and judgments led Luther to search the Scriptures. What he found in the Scriptures was different from what the Church had taught him. It is not a situation where God does his part and I do my part. It is a situation where God does everything. I do nothing—at least not anything good. Our being justified before God is completely God's doing. God chose those whom he would save from eternity, before they were even born. The Son became man in order to redeem sinful mankind as the great atoning sacrifice. God causes his Word of salvation to be spoken so that sinners are justified through faith in Christ, through Christ's goodness, instead of the life that they had lived and are living. The end point for the Christian is not purgatory. It is not a self-improvement project. It isn't a big fat bill of what we owe in order to do our part after God has done his part. The end point for the Christian is joy and thanksgiving at what God has done and is doing. It's like when the Angel spoke to the shepherds on Christmas Night. The Shepherds were encouraged to rejoice: “Fear not, for I bring you glad tidings of great joy that will be for all the people, for unto you is born this night in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” God gives a great gift of salvation to poor, miserable sinners. He distributes his salvation through the Word and the Sacraments. To receive these things we believe them, and thereby make good use of them. It is a dreadful thing to disbelieve these things, because that is calling God a liar. “But,” you might be wondering, “what about our part?” “Isn't there something that we have to do?” “What about our good works?” “The Bible talks a lot about us doing good works.” This is true. The Bible does talk a lot about good works. What is important is that we properly understand these works that a Christian does. They are not our part of the bargain, like it is in the Catholic system. They are an added gift, separate from how God regards us. Good works do not enter in to whether or how we are justified before God. If our works are considered for that judgment, it cannot result in any other verdict than condemnation. But we are not judged according to our works—good, bad, or otherwise—when we believe in Christ. Through faith in Christ we are judged according to a different basis, which is Jesus alone. Instead of good works being something that is required from us for our end of the bargain, good works must be understood as yet another gift from God on top of his justification of us sinners. He declares us not guilty with Jesus's resurrection from the dead. Jesus died for all our sins and atonement has been made. On top of that, together with faith in Christ, God begins to heal our sin-sick heart. Instead of being sold to sin and enslaved to the devil, we are set free to walk in the good works that God has prepared for us beforehand to walk in. The best picture for what is going on here is a picture that Jesus himself uses. He says, “Every good tree produces good fruit, but a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit.” As we are of ourselves, as we were born by nature, we are bad trees. We live in ignorance of God, or, if we learn of him, we rebel against him and his will. We care for nothing and for no one except ourselves and what is ours. We are bad trees. We cannot help but produce bad fruit. God creates a good tree by killing the old tree and uniting us with Christ. This is brought about by God converting us to faith in Christ. Those who believe in Christ are well pleasing to God. After all, it was for the purpose of believing in Christ that God sent his only begotten Son to begin with. Thus, through faith in Christ, a person's whole life is sanctified, is made holy. God does not count our sins against us, and all the activities that we do otherwise while believing in Christ are sanctified so that they are acceptable and pleasing sacrifices to God. Even if we pick up a single straw or give a cup of water to a child, such humble acts, done with faith in Christ, are better than anything we might come up with in our sinful flesh to establish our justification before God. Faith has the power to change our whole life. It doesn't change our life in an outward way, where people can see it. It might not even be changed in the way that we can always feel and know. But faith changes our life before God—which is all that matters. Entire lifetimes could be spent studying all the different facets of what happened and what was discussed in the Reformation. There are many other important, godly, and helpful things that we could talk about. But the most important thing that happened during the Reformation was the return to what the Bible says about our justification before God. Our relationship with God is not a matter of the Law. It is not a situation where God does his part and we have to do our part. Our justification before God is a matter of the Gospel. It is a situation where God pardons and forgives us for Jesus sake. He also gives us his Holy Spirit to fight against our sinful flesh. Even where you might anticipate that we are supposed to do our part—with our good works—it is a matter of grace. For good works to be genuine, and not self-serving, they have to be created by the Holy Spirit. This is what the Bible teaches about our justification before God. Luther understood how hard it was to believe what the Bible says about our justification. He always warned those who were younger than him, who didn't go through the struggles that he went through, that this teaching could easily be lost. That is true. It can be and has been lost in vast swaths of our own Lutheran Church. Our Synod, also, is not immune to this being lost. This is not surprising. The fact of the matter is that our old Adam doesn't like the Gospel and cannot understand it. The grace of God, the giving and giving of God, is incomprehensible to our Old Adam. That is why the miracle of a conversion is necessary. It is only by the almighty power of the Holy Spirit that we can see God and his will for what it really is. If God has bless you and enabled you to know him from the Scriptures and to see from the Scriptures how God regards you, then you will rejoice even while you bear your cross. In order that we may enjoy this good life of knowing God and believing in Jesus, let us not forget to pray in all seriousness what Jesus taught us to pray. Let God's Name be regarded as holy among us. Let God's kingdom come among us. Let God's good and gracious will be done among us.

On August 24, 1744, John Wesley ascended the pulpit at St. Mary's Church in Oxford and delivered a pointed sermon to the faculty and students on the nature of "scriptural Christianity." Wesley pulled no punches and knew that this would be the last sermon he would ever deliver in that place. In his Journal that day he wrote, "I preached for the last time before the University of Oxford. I am now clear of the blood of these men. I have fully delivered my soul." "Scriptural Christianity" is the sermon that marked the final transition of Wesley from Oxford don to itinerant field preacher and movement organizer. It's a sermon focused on the "ordinary" gifts of the Holy Spirit given to all Christians and calls its hearers to evaluate whether or not they are living lives of true holiness. It's a sermon that could just as easily been delivered to clergy and leaders in the church today, asking the question, "Where is this scriptural Christianity to be found?" It's a sermon that really cuts to the heart and calls for all Christians, particularly those in the Methodist tribe, to consider the state of their own lives and that of their churches and communities. Thomas Azer, a Rutgers New Brunswick graduate and servant at St. Mary's Church in East Brunswick, talks to us about his passion in IT and technology. He brings to light his own journey and how he switched from a Pre-Med student to an IT major. While he discusses his mindset throughout college, Thomas gives a message that should resonate with all of us in any stage of life: create your OWN journey. Whether it be in school or service, no one should be afraid to be different from their peers and do what God uniquely intended for them to do. Thomas explains how to combine our passion with our service, and thus reach unparalleled levels of both joy and success in whatever we do.
Mexico's patron saint, our lady of Guadalupe, or La Virgen de Guadalupe, is celebrated on December 12th. La Virgen is remembered and celebrated around the world. I went to St. Mary's Church in Moline, Illinois, and attended their ceremony. I spoke with Father Antonio Dittmer about the big day. For a transcript of the episode, click here.
