Accelerating BAO Scale Fitting Using Taylor Series by Matthew Hansen et al. on Wednesday 30 November The Universe is currently undergoing accelerated expansion driven by dark energy. Dark energy's essential nature remains mysterious: one means of revealing it is by measuring the Universe's size at different redshifts. This may be done using the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature, a standard ruler in the galaxy 2-Point Correlation Function (2PCF). In order to measure the distance scale, one dilates and contracts a template for the 2PCF in a fiducial cosmology, using a scaling factor $alpha$. The standard method for finding the best-fit $alpha$ is to compute the likelihood over a grid of roughly 100 values of it. This approach is slow; in this work, we propose a significantly faster way. Our method writes the 2PCF as a polynomial in $alpha$ by Taylor-expanding it about $alpha = 1$, exploiting that we know the fiducial cosmology sufficiently well that $alpha$ is within a few percent of unity. The likelihood resulting from this expansion may then be analytically solved for the best-fit $alpha$. Our method is 48-85$times$ faster than a directly comparable approach in which we numerically minimize $alpha$, and $sim$$12,000 times$ faster than the standard iterative method. Our work will be highly enabling for upcoming large-scale structure redshift surveys such as that by Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2112.06438v2

This finale for Season 1 of Journalists Are My Heroes finds me looking in the mirror: Matthew Hansen recently wrapped his tenure as metro columnist at the Omaha World-Herald. Like me, he's a child of the rural Midwest who ended up working as a columnist in his native state's largest newsroom. Also like me, he recently stepped out of journalism to flex his skills in the world of content marketing; he's now managing editor for the Buffett Early Childhood Institute. Like any good journalist given plenty of leash, Hansen in his 16 years at the World-Herald followed his whims far and wide -- including reporting trips to Afghanistan and Cuba. He also had a front-row seat to Omaha billionaire Warren Buffett's purchase of his hometown newspaper and the diminishing prospects that Buffett now sees for the financial viability of local news. This conversation runs the gamut: Hansen talks about how the journalism crisis cut his newsroom in half, but we also discuss the goofy origin of his @redcloud_scribe Twitter handle. I ask Hansen about one of his epic stories where he discovered that the most famous photo in American history essentially was a big lie. He also talks about some of his new outlets for writing, including online magazine Between Coasts. We even explore Hansen's feelings about the heart attack that he survived this summer (and wrote about, of course). Get to know a journalist who says he has "an overactive sense of justice, like every metro columnist in the country." --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/journalistsaremyheroes/support

The newly tapped directors to strengthen corporate governance at Nissan promised to turn the Japanese automaker's ailing business around but said Wednesday that extensive job cuts designed to drive a recovery are also coming.Nissan's brand image has been battered by the financial wrongdoing scandal of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn, who is awaiting trial in Japan.Motoo Nagai, a former banker and a new outside director overseeing audit, told reporters Wednesday the job cuts will be announced this week under a new scenario to drive growth.Japanese media have reported that Nissan Motor Co. will slash 10,000 jobs. Nagai did not give details."This is not a simple job reduction but designed for a big jump," he told reporters at the company's Yokohama headquarters.Ghosn, who led Nissan for two decades, is awaiting trial on allegations of under-reporting future compensation and having Nissan shoulder his investment losses. He has repeatedly said he is innocent.Nissan restructured its board and management team in March, adding outside directors, after Ghosn was arrested in November. The directors' appointments to head various governance committees, to oversee compensation, nomination and audit, won shareholders' approval in June. The directors have said that the concentration of power in Ghosn led to the wrongdoing and have acknowledged that governance checks at Nissan had lagged. But they stressed that their efforts had just begun."We need to set up a solid corporate governance structure but also make sure it is put it into practice," said Yasushi Kimura, chairman of the board, stressing that transparency and fairness were critical. Kimura previously served as a consultant at an oil company.Other governance directors are Masakazu Toyoda, an academic and outside director overseeing executive nominations, and Keiko Ihara, a race-car driver and outside director overseeing compensation. Both were Nissan directors from last year but are newly appointed to the governance positions.Toyoda said it was important to build a succession in management and strengthen Nissan's alliance with French automaker Renault SA and smaller Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp.Nissan's financial results have tumbled since the Ghosn scandal. The company reports its fiscal first quarter earnings on Thursday. The directors acknowledged that Nissan's U.S. operations suffered from a mistaken strategy that pursued maximizing sales volume, relying on incentives and fleet sales, or rentals. They also said reassuring shareholders and the public that Nissan had proper governance was important for overall operations."Our job is to make sure management can focus on the auto business," Nagai said. The company's relationship with Renault also has been questioned in the absence of Ghosn, as he was sent by Renault to help turn around Nissan in the late 1990s and had worked to bring together the alliance.Ghosn was released on bail in April after spending 130 days in detention. It's unclear when his trial will start as it is common in Japan for trial preparations to take many months. Ghosn has been ousted from Nissan's board, and he has resigned from the board of Renault.
