The wondrous Ruapehu region never ceases to amaze me at its capacity to stir all senses, from its expansive platter of leisurely outdoorsy pursuits. It easily ranks as one of my all-time favourite playgrounds in New Zealand and I have revelled in its glories via a multitude of modes in recent years. I have savoured exceptional mountain bike trails, jet boating, quad biking and world-class hiking. Not to mention skiing. But in the autumn months, why not head to the heart of Tongariro National Park and take a ride to the summit of Ruapehu from Whakapapa village? The radiant Sky Waka, New Zealand's longest gondola ride, fully warrants the stature as a signature Kiwi experience. I've always been in awe of the alpine engineering audacity of the Swiss – and the Sky Waka absolutely projects that same sense of spine-tingling prowess. Spanning 1.8km from the base station and zipping you up 390m, Whakapapa's dramatically serrated volcanic landscape sweeps you up, as you gawp in wonder out of the glasshouse-like cabin, luxuriously appointed with heated leather seating! Situated at 2,020m above sea level, the cherry on top is Whakapapa Ski Area's Knoll Ridge Chalet which is New Zealand's highest café. As you gush superlatives over the horizon-searching views, it's a novel perch to enjoy coffee from Pātaka, drinks in The Back Bar, or nosh in style while marvelling at the skyline from Knoll Ridge's giant floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking The Pinnacles. I highly recommend “Tea at 2020m”, Whakapapa's stirring take on traditional high tea. It's actually considered the highest high tea on the planet, with a delectable tiered stand of sandwiches, savouries and cakes to work your way through. It's currently available until the end of April, prior to the mountain's seasonal switch to winter activities. After feasting on far too many tasty morsels, the mountain trails were calling. There are over 10km of marked trails to strike out on, ranging from 20 minute strolls to 3 hours return alpine hikes. Without its snow-coat, it's a compelling way to admire the dramatic terrain and its mash-up of volcanic rock, pumice, scoria and sand. Close to Chateau Tongariro, there's a stack of tasty wee tracks. The Tawhai Falls walk is a heart-stealer, leading you through mountain toatoa and beech forest to a waterfall tumbling over the edge of an ancient lava flow. It's one of two waterfalls used in Lord of the Rings that depicted Gollum fishing, hence its nickname is Gollum's Pool. (Mangawhero Falls, very close to Waitonga Falls, is the other location that was cast as Gollum's Pool.) It was sad to see the sorry sight of the moth-balled Chateau Tongariro, although the local rumour mill suggests a wealthy Irish businessman is a hot prospect to breathe new life into the grand lady. Just behind the Chateau, Taranaki Falls is a return walk for even grander waterworks. Passing through a mix of tussock, alpine shrublands and beech forest, the track wraps around the lower slopes of Ruapehu, with vintage views of Ngauruhoe's symmetrical cone. A flock of native birds, including whiteheads and grey warblers, serenaded my stroll all the way to Taranaki Falls, tumbling 20 metres over the edge of a large andesite lava flow which erupted from Ruapehu 15,000 years ago. If you're up for a half-day advanced hike, I definitely recommend the Tupapakura Falls walk. It starts just out of National Park village, on Fishers Road. The track has been upgraded by the local community in partnership with the Department of Conservation. It begins with an easy 20 minute walk to the Taranaki Lookout, serving up panoramic wide-range perspectives of Mt Taranaki and Mt Ruapehu. Beyond this point, the trail becomes a back country adventure track, which will test your stamina in the Erua Forest. The track follows a ridge and then descends steeply to a stream. There are good stands of tawa, mature rimu, miro and totara to see along the way. Climbing from the stream, the track winds its way around bluffs to a sparkling lookout point with views of the long-drop falls. You'll need at least four hours to knock off this 11km long track. Refuel? Reward yourself with a thirst-quencher at Schnapps Bar & Restaurant in National Park Village. Heading south? Synonymous with Ohakune as much as carrots, the famed main-street Chocolate Éclair Shop is worth the trip alone. Sinking your teeth into one of their celebrated giant cream-filled, chocolate-topped pastries is one of life's great pleasures. Just north of town, a curious diversion is Horopito Motors. It's featured in two classic Kiwi flicks, Smash Palace and Goodbye Pork Pie. Nicknamed Smash Palace, for a gold coin donation, you can see some film memorabilia and have a look around the yard. It's quite a yard – more like a vast car graveyard because Smash Palace are the biggest vintage car dismantlers in Australasia. It's like an enormous op-shop for old cars. They sell parts around the world for cars made between the 1920s-1970s and also for some early models that were built before WW1. The on-site museum also includes owner Colin Fredricksen's favourite car restorations on display. Back in my Ezi Car Rental vehicle, I was bound for Taumarunui, but I also enjoyed a short layover in the pint-sized village of Owhango, to reacquaint myself with Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve. Just over a decade ago a group of passionate local residents banded together to bring the birdlife back to this unlogged native podocarp forest, mercifully spared from the ravages of historic milling. This glorious slice of wilderness is on the boundary of Tongariro Forest Park and is now one of our national kiwi sanctuaries. It's also home to a vast flock native bird species including the whio (blue duck), dabchick, whitehead, North Island robin and kereru. Take a stroll on the 3.8km loop track around the reserve for some seriously soothing forest-bathing. I gave a massive 600 year old totara tree a fresh hug, after first marvelling over this mighty specimen four years ago. Yes, I'm still a happy little tree-hugger. I romped my way around the Ruapehu region in a trusty hybrid Ford Puma, courtesy of Ezi Car Rental. I thoroughly enjoyed the Ezi experience, where excellent vehicles, super sharp prices and fast & friendly service are all part of the package. Ezi Car Rental operates an extensive network from 24 locations across the country. They're everywhere you want to be with vehicles to suit your specific needs. Head to www.ezicarrental.co.nz The drama and grandeur of Ruapehu is power-packed as a year-round wonderland for outdoorsy adventure. High-profile closures of major employers this year, such as Timaru's meatworks and mills in Ohakune, have shown just how big an impact the loss of an employer can have on people living in our smaller areas and regions. But new analysis shows there are places all around the country that are relying on a handful of employers to provide the bulk of jobs. It means those workers are vulnerable if there are any big changes for those businesses. Money correspondent Susan Edmunds spoke to Susana Lei'ataua.

It won't be a particularly good morning for the people of the central North Island. There was a sense of inevitability really, though, with the announcement that Winstone International will be closing its two mills near Ohakune. For months now, Winstone have been working on trying to find a way to keep the mills open in the face of declining commodity prices and astronomically high power prices. More than 200 workers are directly affected, but of course many, many more will feel the ripple effects of the mills closure. And this comes right on the heels of Ruapehu Alpine lifts troubles as well. It's a real double whammy for the region. The Tangiwai Sawmill and the Karioi Pulpmill have been a part of the central North Island community for more than 40 years. Generations have worked at the mills, but no more.   Resources Minister Shane Jones was with Mike Hosking this morning on the Mike Hosking Breakfast and says the reason for the closure can be laid squarely at the feet of the electricity authority, and we need to make changes to the energy sector.   “Look, it's up to you and I, as Kiwis and your listeners, do you want an economy where the price of power is internationally competitive to keep businesses functioning? Or do you want to disembowel your economy and turn it into an import model? I don't want that. Which is why Simeon Brown and I are signing off now the criteria and that criteria for the review of the power sector will involve structural separation, but look, mate, people have their had this nervousness, they've had this skittishness - don't touch the power system. We trusted the power system to deliver outcomes that boost international competitiveness and national security, they haven't so we have to change it, simple.”  Well, it's not going to be that simple, is it? Changing it is not going to be that simple at all.  I'd be really interested to hear from other manufacturers or those involved in manufacturing and in business. Is it the fluctuating power prices? Can you point to the electricity authority if your business is really struggling and saying you, you as an entity are the reason that I may well go to the wall? There have been so many stresses put on business, put on manufacturers in particular, over the past four or five years.    Is the fluctuating price of electricity the straw that's breaking many camel's backs, or is it just four or five years of really tough times? Is it international prices making you uncompetitive when compared with product from the rest of the world and the electricity authority is being used as the whipping boy? I love the way he says simple, he's going to break up the electricity authority. Well no, it's not going to be simple. And it's too late for Ohakune, far too late. When Shane Jones says it's the electricity market that's going to stuff our economy, I would have thought there was a bit more to it than that. For people having to pay high interest on business loans, the cost of living crisis, which means spending is reduced internationally competitive prices, other countries being able to outbid you, the high wages that you have to pay here compared to other countries, really the electricity component, I would have thought is just another big pressing, weighty issue coming into your office, not the only one.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

People seem to think Kamala Harris made a fool of Trump in the debate, but real fool was us, New Zealand.  Within 24 hours of the debate we got news of 230 jobs lost due in part to an energy crunch caused by moral grandstanding on climate change.  That's 230 jobs, but up to 1000 people including families. That's half the population of Raetihi and Ohakune.  Shane Jones calls it the hollowing out of regional NZ, and there's much more to come.  We also had news Methanex is consulting on mothballing, indefinitely, one of its two remaining plants.  Why? You guessed it - in part it's moral grandstanding on climate change.  More on that in a second, but first back to the debate. This is the most left, progressive political leader in America, Kamala Harris, boasting about fracking.  "I will not ban fracking. I have not banned fracking as Vice President of the United States. And in fact, I was the tie breaking vote on the Inflation Reduction Act which opened new leases for fracking."  And here, Kamala Harris boasts about record domestic oil production while she and Biden were in charge.  "We have had the largest increase in domestic oil production in history."  Drill baby, drill.  Meanwhile, we're basking in nuclear free moment bliss down here at the bottom of the Pacific. Sending manufacturing jobs and regional jobs off to the slaughterhouse.  And yes, climate change is real, etcetera.  But why would we cut our noses off to spite our faces, when the most progressive, climate conscious contender to run the world's largest economy, and biggest user of oil, is boasting about drilling for it?  Sitting watching that debate yesterday it wasn't Trump I thought looked stupid, it was us. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Last week I was holidaying at Omori, at the southern end of Lake Taupo, and I did what I always do at this time of the year- I visited one of my favourite places in New Zealand, Tongariro National Park. As restorative, humbling and awe inspiring as this region is, Whakapapa Village, at the foot of the majestic Ruapehu left me with a sense of sadness too. With the future of its ski-fields up in the air, a desolate Tongariro Chateau, with its golf course gone to seed, and empty buildings surrounding it, the area feels quietly paused in time, with no sense of if and when it may spring back to life. And it's not good enough. It's an incredible region, and one that deserves to be thriving. A decision on the ski-fields will be forced soon with Ruapehu Alpines Lift's last Government cash injection. It's the fourth, only covering costs until the end of March this year. It was disappointing to see offers for the two ski fields derailed last year, and if you speak to those with a vested interest they offer little assurance the mountain will open this year. Hopefully MBIE, DoC, iwi, and RAL can work together to come to an agreement. Of course, an operating ski field is a bonus for DoC as they seek a new partner for the Chateau. But unfortunately, there are still serious issues to deal - a lease termination agreement and payment to the previous operators, earthquake proofing upgrades to be done within the next 25 years, and other general renovations. Tax payers will more than likely have to foot the bill – estimated at around $100 million– but will a new Government with a tight eye on the budget see the value? Is it time to focus on other areas for accommodation in the region, such as National Park and Ohakune? I'm hugely fond of the Chateau and there is something magical about this landmark heritage building, but at present DoC is spending between $150,000 - $200,000 a month on ongoing maintenance and repair of empty buildings. I can't believe I am saying it, but perhaps the most practical decision is to accept the Chateau, built in the style of a Canadian Railway Hotel, has had its day. Either way, decisions are needed. Leaving the chateau empty and decaying for years, possibly decades, while possible solutions are attempted is simply depressing. And considering that, pre-covid, 80% of Ruapehu's tourism was domestic, the pressure should be on the Government to get the ski field sorted. Aside from these issues, can't complain about a couple of days on the tracks and in the bush - amazing. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So it was with much alarm that we read a hypothesis: that in 2025, just 13 or so months from now... Saturn's rings may simply... disappear. Imagine that. It'd be like Rome without the Colosseum, or Ohakune without its giant carrot. Unthinkable. So what's going on here, are the rumours true, is this the manifestation of some kind of cosmic climate change writ large? To find out we welcome Ian Griffin. Businesses in the ski towns of Ohakune and National Park say recent snowfalls have been a lifesaver - they've gone from worrying about going under, to being busier than last year, and they're stoked about it. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts which ran the Whakapapa and Turoa ski areas, went into liquidation in June, owing tens of millions of dollars, after a two bids to buy the ski areas failed. The government stepped in just before the July school holidays, with a five-million-dollar loan to the liquidators to allow the season to go ahead, but negotiations about who will ultimately own the two ski areas continue. Central North Island iwi Ngati Tuwharetoa has reportedly confirmed it is also now in the bidding to buy RAL and is conducting due diligence. A decision on the ski fields' long-term future could be months away. Meanwhile the snow's been falling and visitors have been pouring in. Susie speaks with Ruapehu District Mayor Weston Kirton, and James Bell, a bootfitter with TCB ski rentals in Ohakune.

The worst case scenario has happened, according to administrators who'd been trying to revive the Ruapehu Ski Fields. The bail out deals melted away this afternoon when creditors rejected all proposals on the table. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts which ran both the Whakapapa and Turoa fields went into voluntary administration in October owing millions of dollars. A government backed plan would have seen two separate operators running one side of the mountain each ..for the purchase price of a dollar a side, with the government a 25% stakeholder in each venture and providing loans to both operators. The other option was raising capital to keep it afloat through crowd funding and life passholders . But neither got enough votes from people who are owed money by the existing company. In this episode: The FAQ is: on being single and traveling: The destination is New Zealand, North Island. The lesson learned is: losing jewelry while traveling and the tip is: be willing to pause and be safe in travel.   FAQ : Ruth asks, I will be newly single in the new year and want to do some traveling that I did not have the opportunity to do when I was married, I am excited but a little timid about solo travel. Does anyone have any tips on trips that would be a good dipping the toe in the water?   Response:  Being newly single is a great time to take a travel somewhere new. It's ok that you're timid at first. Some tips to dip your toe in the water will be found on Level 1 or Level 2 travel stages. Here's some advice: Don't wait for your trip to come to you. Find out yourself how much you like travel and just start out small, this weekend take a trip on a city bus, train or to your nearby next city you've never seen. Go alone. Don't be tempted to find a friend and see how you do. Let me know when you get back how did that go.   Today's Independent Destination- New Zealand's North Island   New Zealand was one of the first locked down countries who did well with Corona Virus in 2020. In this episode, we'll focus on the North Island, and in another episode, I cover the South Island. My friend, Jenny Latto, talked to me about what's new on the North Island, New Zealand. She's an artist who lives in Waiuku, part of Auckland City, an hour's drive to Auckland Central or downtown. About 8k away from her home are some surfing beaches, including one that has either black sand beaches on one side or white sand, whatever you prefer. She told me about a Sandspit beach with a slide into the water which sounds nice. They are on an 8-week holiday in the summer months, the opposite weather from the Northern Hemisphere. She said that you could really travel from one end of the north island in a day if you wanted to. http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-KohStor-t1-back-d3.html   If you go to NZ North Island, you'll hear about the Waikato River, the longest river in NZ. 264 miles long. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waikato_River You may find a nice rural area in Ohakune, where the ski areas are nearby. https://www.mountainviewestate.co.nz/about.php Wellington on the North Island is nice to walk on the boardwalk and stroll the restaurants and waterfront bars. That was not a good sign. It indicated that my special cross from my necklace had broken and was missing. I have the chain, but not the pendant. The lesson learned was to buy a better chain with clasp. I had warnings prior that the clasp was old and I should have done something about that. So, learn from my lessons, replace the old clasp before you lose the pendant.   Today's Travel Advice- Be willing to pause and be safe Pandemic travel may be with us a long time, so you will be getting used to new ways of walking through airports, using public spaces, and making meaningful travel decisions, especially about safety. Be more willing to smile, take a breath, and to let someone go ahead of you in line during these stressful outings. You never know, you may just make someone's day when you do.
